hahaha! I love your quote VP!  I don't know if it's a female thing, but I seem to always be reanalyzing the past or planning the future!

I too have been not very good this week again... BUT my scale told me 67.0kg yesterday morning, which was my goal for the beginning of september, so YAY!  So, until I leave for Canada, I'm going to party with all my friends here.  Looks like we're all taking a little vacation from the hard diets, so I don't feel so bad

Totally agree about the water too... I don't know how that works, but my face skin definitely looks healthier when I drink loads!  Let me know how revitalift works, VG, I really need to start using a proper moisturizer (rather than just whatever I'm putting on my body!).

Hi ladies!

Sorry I've been away... Well I haven't been "away".. I just fell off the wagon, and when I landed, got distracted by my friends called "fun, alcohol and food" and then I turned around and said wagon was speeding off into the distance!  I am now running furiously after the wagon.

I've been eating kinda terribly, and stopped exercise... and you know what?  My self esteem is going down!  Do you find your body image is better when you've been exercising?

I hate those constant self-depreciating girls too.  I have one word to call them: boring!  If you can't have a conversation with someone without it being about them and their obsession with weight, you might as well put some ear plugs in.  I don't really have many close friends like that, probably for that reason! But, like you guys, I like talking about it here, and OCCASIONALLY with a friend... it feels appropriate.

I've been thinking a lot about what you said Goldie, about not knowing what you want to do with your life.  I think it's really hard to know... there's so many things that you could do, and the thing is, it might be the perfect thing, just at the wrong company, or just slightly the wrong thing.  There's so many variables.  I've been talking with my housemate recently... she wants to be an actress so badly.  She's doing a lot of the right things: she temps so she can go to auditions/take 3 months off to film (she's going to be a minor lady-in-waiting for the new Robin Hood movie coming out next year!), does a bit of modelling on the side, but she hasn't really got anywhere.  She feels stuck, and she's going to be 30 next year, and girls have a bit of an expiry date in film/tv.  I always thought it was simple: if you want something, go for it with all your heart.  But then, what if you don't know what it is?  What if you have all this pent up passion but no focus?  Or, what if it's just too competitive for you to make it?  I wish I had the answers.

Personally, one of the reasons for me to go travelling is to have enough time to work on all the web projects that I personally want to work on (rather than what someone else tells me to work on), without worrying about making a lot of money.  But I know I love web design (I used to think I liked print design, but web design is so much more interactive, but with so many more constraints (by what your viewers see it with)... it's much more "me".). I know I'm lucky to know.

Anyway, all this to say, I hope you find that thing you love and start working towards it.

Geez.  I think I just wrote an essay... serves me right for staying away from here so long!

Oooh, I'm sorry you had a bad experience with your iud, icyflames! I was a bit nervous about getting it, but like you, I don't want to mess around with my hormones and so I needed a non-hormal option (my biggest problem wasn't weight gain, but emotions, and painful sex, which kinda defeats the purpose of being on birth control, in my opinion!).  My sisters have also had problems with being on the pill, and I spoke to my mom recently, and it turns out she had problems with it too back in the day.

Anyway, I've had my iud for almost a year now, and while periods are longer, I haven't had any problems.

I really think it's rubbish when doctors say that there's no side effects to the pill! The hormone levels have definitely come down a LOT since the 1970s, but I agree with you that we really don't know what the long term effects of birth control is.

I think the pill affects everyone differently, and different brands of pills affect that individual differently as well.

If you find that you're gaining a lot of weight, have more mood swings etc, you might want to ask your doctor to try a different one.  I tried 4 different types until I was put on a very low dose progesterone pill (which, unfortunately also gave me a long period), but the weight came off, and the mood swing  were better.

I'm personally no longer on the pill, am using a copper IUD now, which has no hormone effects, and definitely no weight gain issues.  I say, don't be afraid to ask your doctor about alternatives and different types of birth control!

Hi ladies and welcome to "almost friday" as I'm going to call thursday from now on!

Welcome Jemmy, and congrats on the new baby!  I'm guessing you're in the UK from your "stones" measurements... I am in London right now, but will soon be off :)  Interesting fact, when I was in Japan teaching english, the women told me that as soon as they get pregnant they are put on a strict diet.  Sounds horrendous, but they are all so skinny, even the new moms.  Now, maybe they're a bit TOO skinny; new babies need their momma's to have a little cushion on them.

Thanks a lot goldie... I've just spent 2 hours of my life on that site that I'll never get back!  j/k  they have some brilliant stuff on there.  I love reading through that stuff.... until september I still have my nutritionist deciding my exercise (and with my foot injury still acting up) so pretty soon I'm going to have to come up with my own stuff!

VG, have you decided to take that job?  I know it's hard when you're doing a job you don't love... at my job before this one, I would go and hang out in the bathrooms to stave off the boredom.  I promised myself that I wouldn't spend my time doing something I didn't love... so on that note, my question to all of you is... "If you could be doing ANYTHING, any job, without major retraining or starting again as a 6 ft amazonian, and without worrying about money, what would you be doing?"

VP, I hope you have some activities to do on your commute!  That's so far!

Foxylady, I have never surfed, but I've been snowboarding quite a bit (being a canadian).  Was never very good at snowboarding, but am always up for something fun.  We'll be in San Francisco in October... will that be a good time to get a few lessons and try out surfing?

Okay, okay!  I'm here too!

My excuse was a terrible bout of food poisoning last thursday that had me out of commission all weekend.  Was feeling better by saturday night and binged on meat and take-away for the rest of the weekend.  Didn't drink, but also didn't exercise (at ALL) but am still down a kg this week!  Not eating anything for 2 days really does a good job!  LOL!

Congrats on your loss too VG and VP!  I can't imagine you have much more to go???  I haven't weighed in my 120s since I was 18 or so. You skinny miny!

Foxy, when do you hear about your test results?

Crazy news for me... I've handed in my resignation at work...  the boyfriend and I are going travelling!  One month in Canada to start and then to San Francisco for a bit, and then WHO KNOWS!!!  I love adventures!

Take care ladies, and sweat hard :)

wow,  I think we all caved and did terribly on the challenge week one... hahaha!  I went to a festival and had thai curry, a huge hotdog, a few ciders and then loads of rum and cokes...  I missed my cardio this week too so....

1. drinking only 2 times:  I drank 3 times

2. workout 3-4 times:  I did 2 times

3. Lose kgs?  I went up 0.3kg!

hahahaha!  It's almost funny.  I give myself a mark of 52%.

Goldie, your burritos sound amazing... I'm totally into the poached eggs on toast for my breakfasts,  but i think I might add in some spinach.  That sounds great!

I also hope you get good results for babies, foxylady!

Yea!  Challenge!

Okay, here's mine:

1. Get down to 67kg (2.5 kg from my current weight)

2. Waist down to 30.5" (currently 32") and navel down to 34" (currently 36")

3. Exercise: 2 days cardio, 2 days strength

4. Drinking: 2 days per week or less (OR less than 750 cal from alcohol per week)

I guess you can just give your compliance rate, so for the commitment phobe, you can say I was 82% compliant ;)  Which is an A, according to my teachers!  I'm so jealous of your nice stomach.... have never been able to wear a bikini, even when I was 120lbs back in highschool as it just never looks that good.  Maybe once I have a 6 pack... hahaha!  4 fruits every day?  That's loads!  I think I do 2, but probably 4 servings veg.

Anyway girls, it's thursday tomorrow... only one more day until the weekend!  woot!

Hi guys...

Just had an idea (based on vg's last post)...

How about a mini challenge?  We give ourselves goals for September 1st.  They should be VERY realistic!  Then on september 1st, we say what percentage of our goals we have reached (and if you surpass your goal, you get 110% or something, like grades in school)!  It's about 6 weeks away, and it would be nice to get there together.

If you think it's a stupid idea, that's cool... I just thought since we've all been at it for a while, a challenge would be fun.

Let me know what you think!

I heard about the massive storms in the news.... Crazy!  And fires in BC?  It sounds like the apocalpse has come to Canada :)

Congrats on getting projects done around the house.  I have had motivation for nothing at all....  the boyfriend says, "that's okay, take a week off your side projects, and don't feel guilty".  I am enjoying reading my books and watching tv for once!

Any luck with conception yet??

My mom used to make a really yummy zuccini bread that was like brownies... she used apple sauce instead of sugar too, so it's really good for you.  Will ask her for the recipe!

Had 3 take-aways over friday and the weekend and ate everything I wanted during those meals.  The guilt was immense, but I still managed to lose a little this week (thanks to exercise and good eating for the rest of the week).  Good news for me too! I've lost another inch in my waist!  YAY!!!  I'm an apple shape, so getting my waist under 32" (which is where you have an increased risk for all those fatty illnesses because you're carrying fat around your organs) is the ultimate goal.  Around my smallest bit right under my ribcage, I'm 32.5, but at my navel I'm 36.  i would love to get that 36 down to 32!  Do you guys have problem areas like that too?  Still worried I'll lose my butt if I get down that small though... LOL!

Take care ladies!  Keep up the good work.

I DEFINITELY don't want to get traditional lipo...  I was just curious about the laser lipo, and wondering if it was the "miracle" non-invasive thing it looked to be on the website.  I mean, they've got laser hair removal and laser eye surgery... which seem to work.  And now laser lipo...!

I read about it in the telegraph (a quite good paper here in the UK), and she had it working...http://www.telegraph.co.uk/health/dietandfitn ess/3353193/Weight-loss-pain-free-lipo.html

I do a lot of but exercises already, it's not flat, it just gets little... can't seem to build very much size, no matter how many squats I do.  Oh well, I guess we can't change our body shapes :(

I say, have your 1-2 times a month going out for beers WITHOUT GUILT, because I think it's good and healthy to have a few drinks socializing with friends, and being relaxed.  Doing that a few times a month as part of a NORMAL lifestyle will allow you to continue your progress for much longer, because you're not giving up everything.  3-4 beers isn't loads... if you were having 12, that would definitely put a damper on your weightloss, but it sounds like you're being quite reasonable.

Just because you're losing weight, doesn't mean you should stop living too!

Happy monday everyone!  I too had a nice weekend, although not spending them inside like you, VG, I went to an engagement party of my irish friend, and spent all day saturday suffering the repercussions!

I didn't tell you guys... I was down another kilogram last week... so my prize for not eating the pringles was a big loss that week!  And I've lost another 0.2kg this week, which FINALLY brings me just under 70 at 69.8kg!!  I'm so glad all these changes are starting to pay off.  Only 2.8 kg left to go on my goal before September!  Woohoo!  I measured my waist and the smallest point is still the same size as when I started Cry, but around my navel I've lost around 2 inches Laughing!  I guess doing loads of situps etc is starting to pay off, at least at the navel level.  Hopefully the waist itself will go down too.  I really do want to be toned besides a bit thinner.

It sucks that our bodies don't always help us out...  I guess we've all just got to be careful... especially you VP...! when doctors start talking anything about surgery, I guess it's best to be cautious!  I'm glad it's on hold for a while... you never know what you'll be like once you've had the surgery.  I hear lots of people get arthritis and stuff from it.  I heard it also only gets worse...we're all in our twenties, right?  This is not good!  LOL!

Take care ladies, and I look forward to your good news(s)!

I hear ya!  Probably my biggest reason on not making progress very quickly.  I've switched to clear liquors (used to be a wine/beer fiend) and it's cut the calories in half, (but then on friday, things got way out of control (you can't monitor how much you're drinking when it's clear, I find), and I probably drank double the amount I'd normally drink.  let's just say I was feeling the pain in a big way on saturday!)

Have you thought about switching to liquors?  I drink vodka with ice and a bit of water and a few slices of squeezed lemon.  For really hot days they are amazing, and keep you a bit hydrated too!  Don't diss it until you try it!

Hi ladies!

I too am a lentil-o-holic.  They are just so yummy!  I'm obsessed with indian food and thai food here, which means more veggie meals, and more LENTILS!  It is really cheap to make a big pot of lentils with potatoes and carrots and other veg. Do you guys follow recipes or are you like me and just chuck in everything you can?

Mmmmm goldie, that pasta is making my mouth water!  Except for the feta... I think I'm in the same boat as vg...  I could take it or leave it.  I'm also a sucker for barbeque wings, but as long as you look hot in your cowgirl jeans, I'm sure the boys don't mind if they're a little bit tight!

You'd be proud of me... went to a bbq and didn't eat any pringles.  I think that must be some sort of new level of willpower (I did drink a whole mickey of gin though, so maybe not *amazing* willpower, but it's something!).

Do any of you guys have injuries?  I've been having pain in my feet and finally went to see a podiatrist this week.  He was so nice and explained everything to me... basically said I had really "mobile" feet (which explains why I can't walk well in heels and seem to be chronically turning my ankles), which means I put a lot of strain on my ligaments.  Basically I have to dish out £180 for new shoes and inserts and he says I'm not allowed to go running for a few weeks.  Crap!  I'm already poor cuz I'm saving for a big trip in the fall and I'm tired of swimming, I tell you!  This is going to put a hamper on my september goals.  I guess all in the name of "happy feet"!

I have been so busy too... working on an "outside of work" project (it's actually a weightloss thing), so have been slacking off on the exercise!  Maybe using my own tools will make me work a bit harder!  But I totally agree, fun times shouldn't stop just because you're trying to slim down :)

Hi guys,

How was your weekend/week?  Congrats vg on the 0.5lb!!  woohoo!  I like that you guys are all doing things in a normal "sane" way.  There's a few forums on here and they're all eating barely 1000 calories or so obsessed it's a bit scary!

I have been sick since last thursday-- major flu of some sort, so couldn't do any working out, and when I'm grumpy I want yummy things, so ate lots of chocolate. it has not been a good week for me (which I'm sure I'll find out in my weigh-in tonight).  Still sick, but will do some pushups/situps tonight and see how I do.

It was so sad being sick but I still managed to get to the Canada day boat cruise here in London on saturday.  Was so fun!  I didn't have the energy to go out afterwards to do more dancing, but it was still a great day (and so nice to be around so many friendly canadians.... anyone who's tried to go chat to a random Brit will probably agree with me... north americans are so much more friendly, while Brits need a bit more time to warm up to you!).

I think you get lots of habits from your parents, but not sure about the actual cravings themselves... I know I get my binge eating from my dad, and my mom is the queen of massive meals (even though they're quite healthy, she just loads it up... the more, the better!) and maybe that's why I'm still struggling to control portions.  I think you should allow yourself to eat at least one twinkie with your mom-- I hate the idea that any one food is not allowed!

Hope you all had a good one!

"I think a lot of us use CC because we're trying not to bore our RL friends to death, since no one gets bored talking about diet and weight loss here : )"

I can go on about how guilty i feel about eating that chocolate cake, without submitting my friends and family to a play by play of everything i've eaten, exercised and my miniscule weekly weight loss.  Thanks the lord for CC!

And Maja, hopefully if you tell him to "grow up" he will stop being such a child about wanting to seem superior to you.  I bet if you call him out, he will stop it with his hurtful actions.

Great post idea Minda!

Okay, my factors are (in no particular order):

1. Moving to the UK and their liberal views on heavy alcohol consumption after work.

2. Working evenings on my own projects/freelance to push my skills and portfolio forward (I'm a web designer, so 18 hours hunched over my computer screen)

3. Giving myself permission to eat anything I like because "I'm working so hard, I deserve a treat).

4. While I've always eaten healthy, the boyfriend (who is 6 inches taller than me) would receive the same serving sizes.

Are we going to go through how far we've come towards reaching our goals?  I'd say I was about 20% of the way there!

...I measured myself today, and it seems like I have gotten BIGGER in the last few days, what the heck is going on!?!?! my thigh measurements have gone up an inch or so, and my waist has gone up a bit, and my waist has gone up a bit as well....

So frustrating!  I completely understand...  and some really good advice here too from kayb85 and epona1769.  I didn't start to see results on the scales or with the measuring tapes for the first 5 weeks but a few weeks past that, and I'm getting real results.

My nutritionist, when she takes measurements, always takes things like waist measurements 3 times and then takes the average... maybe something you want to consider.  Also, make sure the thigh measurement is at the BIGGEST point (keep adjusting the tape measure until you find it).  That way, it'll be easier to find it each time.  Perhaps only measure yourself once a week, as there's less likelyhood you'll see inch loss that quickly.

Hope your body is recovered for next week... keep it up and good luck!

Foxylady, where do you live?  SOUNDS AMAZING!  If I could go surfing and hang out at the beach all day, i would be one happy camper.

VG, good luck with the standing while cycling!  I'd be worried about showing up at work as a sweaty mass, but I guess if you can have a shower, then it's okay.  Have you thought about finding a "long way" to go instead?  You know, so you don't just go by the shortcut.  Anyway, just a thought!

Soooo, goood news!  I had my weigh in yesterday (I only weigh myself once a week) and I've lost 0.9kg this week!!  WOOOHOOO!!  That's about 2lbs.  I am very pleased.  The no drinking sure paid off.  My goal for this week is to drink less than 750 cal of alcohol... might be a bit tricky with my canada day cruise!

Hi guys!

Made it through the weekend okay?

I did very well... until last night, when the housemate brought out a homemade chocolate brownie cake!  Can anyone actually resist chocolate?  i find it impossible....

But, you'll be happy to know that my "no drinking" weekend went as planned (errr... by that, I mean I didn't drink anything!), but I felt like I missed out on all the fun!  There's a booze cruise here in London for Canada day this saturday, and I'm definitely going to be a bad girl there!

Foxylady, that's a pretty impressive leg press.  I think I did 85kg once for 5 reps, which is pretty much the same, but I thought I was going to die!  I would love to be able to do more with my upper body.  I'm slowly converting all my girlie pushups to proper ones, but even then, can't manage more than ten.  Sad, wimpy arms!

Wish me luck with the weigh-in tonight!  Fingers crossed....

Yea, goldie, you better let us in on your pull-up cheat device!  I am just working out at home (we have a boxing bag in the basement of our office, plus going to the swimming pool once a week) but at my old gym they used to have one of those "assisted" pullup bars, where you'd set how much you'd want it to help you with... My friend and I could do 5 reps with it holding 20kg (terrible!), but hopefully if I get your crazy band, I can one day do 5 all by myself.  That would be so hot!

Foxylady, I'm so jealous!  I'm in London, UK right now, and it's got nothing on continental europe, although it tends to be faster to walk than use the public transport (I think the tube system here is 150 years old!).

Planning on a no-drinking weekend.  This should be much easier than usual as I am COMPLETELY broke... hahahahaa!  Wish me luck.

Have a good one, ladies!

I'm not sure what the optimal amount of water you should be drinking, but make sure you don't decrease your salt content too much as that can cause problems too...

I also recently read this on water, you might find it useful:http://www.shapefit.com/water-facts.html

I like that it says it helps increase your metabolism, but again, doesn't say what the optimal level is.  Let me know if it does speed up your weight-loss!

When we went to McDonald's as kids, it was a really big deal; same with KFC. This was because it only happened about once a month.

Just like with other things-- when I was a kid, getting a new bike was a HUGE deal, or getting some sort of new clothing or jewelery that I had been coveting, when I got them, I felt truly excited and it was great.  I see kids now getting everything they ask for, right when they ask for it.

The whole point is to teach children that it's a big deal to get these things.  That they are SPECIAL.  But it also meant that going to McDonald's or getting junk food was an  AMAZING treat.  It also meant that because I didn't get much chips or processed chocolate, when I did get it, it was a treat, but it also meant that my body couldn't eat loads of it.  My mother wasn't doing it because I was on a diet-- none of us were fat kids, she was making homemade cookies and bread etc, but she didn't like seeing us eat processed, sugar laden foods.

If kids grow up with the expectation of eating these things all the time, they're destined to put on weight as adults when they're less active and their metabolisms slow down.

Didn't lose that much this week on my weigh-in (only 0.2kg), but I missed 2 days of exercise (bad girl!) and this week I will be counting calories (didn't last week, and probably inflated my portions).

You know the weight metre that determines when you'll meet your goal?  Well, today, it says I'll reach my goal on my birthday!  November 6th!  What a great birthday present that would be!

Hey vegetariangeek.... Picture? I'm sure it's not as bad as you think!

I hope you're feeling better too....nothing worse than spending your days off sick!

Boyfriend is actually a huge sweetie, but he's one of those people that, when he puts his mind to something, he's very focused (he used to play basketball and soccer very well while growing up, and knows about training!).  It's really good for me, but I can be so lazy and whiney, if I think I can get away with it.  At the end of the day, I do want to reach these goals, so if I work hard at it, I will feel like I really deserve it!

How is going off refined sugar supposed to help?  Any studies showing how much it does for you?
