Weight Gain Got my period back after 4 years! Nov 08 2009

Arguskin: I also lost mine at a "normal" bmi of about 19.5 and never really was too underweight think about bmi18 at the lowest but I did alot of intense exercise and had a lot of muscle mass and not much body fat.

While trying to get my period to return I ate to gain and cut way down on exercise, 45mins 3 times a week of light - moderate exercise. I am completly sedentary in my daily life and job.

My period has been back since july but my cycles are a little longer than normal, usually 50+ days but each cycle seems to be getting a little shorter. At the moment im try to concieve so I have cut out all exercise other than some short walks and yoga. Oh and Im 24!

Sweeties_Bee - Congratulations on getting your period back :)

Arguskin & bsh0611 - I had to get to a bmi of 21 and cut out nearly all exercise to get my period back after not having it for nearly 2 years.

Yeah I also agree that exercising plays a major role in getting your period back, your body need rest, proper nutrition and time to recover. Take some time off exercise, get to a BMI of 20 if your not there already and get some relaxation in even in the form of meditation or something you enjoy.

I went without a period for a year and half and when I really started trying to get it back it took bout 5 months. I am now BMI of 21, walk and yoga for exercise and make sure to get all my calories everyday and try to relax for a while everyday. My period is still a little longer than normal but im sure my body is still healing. By the way I lost my period at a BMI of 19.5 so you dont have to be really underweight to lose it.

I too was the same as you, I was 5 3 and 107 with a bmi of 19.5 and body fat of about 12%. I worked out 5-6 days a week with lots of weights and cardio, I felt fit and healthy with lots of energy but no period. My period disappeared for a year even though I felt like I was healthy, I had o period so obviously I wasn't!

You will need to cut back on exercise and gain some body fat, your body has a set point where it will stop menstration and shut down the reproduction system as it cant support a pregnancy. I cut down on exercise and regained back to 118 where I previously was and my period has returned. My cycles are long but each one gets shorter so I guess my body is still healing, you may only need a couple of lbs for it to restart.

Bsh0611: Thanks for opening my eyes to the fact that 1500 was starving myself, I needed to hear that as I have always convinced myself I was only slightly undereating Embarassed  I ran a little but not too much, I did really hardcore heavy weight lifting and a lot of high intensity training sometimes sprints and I was really lean. I never took any rest days and I believe I had an exercise addiction. I have a really controlling personality and for me to get my period to return I had to learn to let go a little by stopping tacking my calories and relax my eating habits and eat whatever and stop worrying about getting 33% carbs fats protein.

A about a month or two before my period returned I noticed I had discharge a lot, which my doctor told me was a good sign. Mood wise was up and down, getting frustrated thinking my period would never come back then happy when it did then worried hoping it would come back the month after. Honestly I feel okay with my body SOME of the time but I would be lying if I said I was completly happy with it. I thing I have learned is that I won't put on weight if I dont exercise everyday. I am actually hoping to have a baby soon so that was a big motivating factor in gaining to get my period back.

I had amenhorrea for a little over a year when my body fat got down to 12%, I lost weight by accident and liked the weight i was at so I tried to maintain it by slightly undereating (1500) and doing alot of intense exercise. Once I got serious about getting my period back I ate to gain weight (10lbs) and reduced my workouts to 45minutes 3 times a week and it came back after 3 months of properly trying. My first cycle was bout 65days and my last only was 55days so im hoping this one is a little shorter. I am now 5f3 and am 118 so a healthy weight now.

Maybe after your marathon you might reduce your running as it is very hard on the body and burns alot of calories, you may have an energy imbalance. Hope this helps

Hi yellowlucy, this is exactly what happened to me last year. I over exercised and lost a little weight from 115lb to 107lb at 5f3" but was still eating about 1500 kcals or more but it was high protein low carb and low fat. I came off the pill and my period didnt return, my doctor also recommended going back on the pill but I didn't for the same reasons that you don't want to.

What I did was cut down on exercise to 45min 3 times a week MAX, 15min low intensity cardio and 30mins light weights for me as I was previously lifting heavy. In july my period came back and now im waiting for my next one to come, I have all the ovulations signs that last few days so im sure it will be here soon. Although my cycles are now a little longer im sure once my body has healed they will be regular again.

My opinion is you should cut out running as it is hard on the body, or at least cut down some more. Its not healthy to be without a period. It took me about 8 months before I cut down exercise and changed my eating habits and then 3 months later my period returned. Hope this helps!

I was in sort of the same situation for the last year, I lost my period for a year after losing weight to 107lb at 5f3 and being very active. The only thing that got it back was reducing my exercise by 75%, gaining to 118lbs and eating a non restricive diet, basically anything I feel like. About 3 months ago the doctor gave proestrogone pills and while I was a bit blosted while taking them it went away when I stopped taking them and I didn't gain weight from them.

If you are serious about getting your period back I would recommend you try to reduce your works for a while to see if your body can balance your energy.

I just got my period back yesterday after not having it for a year Laughing I only really got serious about trying to get it back in april, I lost it from losing weight too quickly (12lbs in about 3 weeks) exercising way too much and at too high an intensity for my body and not being able to deal with stress.

I had to gain back the 12lbs putting me at a healthy weight for my body (118lb @ 5f3), i increased my body fat from 12% to about 19% and I reduced my exercise by 75%. now all I do is 45min 3 times a week, 10minutes LIGHT cardio and LIGHT weights. If you are really underweight you may need to stop exercising until you gain. I also started yoga to help with stress and stopped tracking my calories and now just eat what I feel like.

Do you know what your body fat is? Im going to get mine checked in the gym tomorrow so that I know what it is so I don't go below it. I find yoga quite boring too i use it for stress relief rather than exercise, yeah its strange that i do more exercise than you but i am very sedentary in everyday life so I guess it balances out.

I think every body is so different, things that work for one might not work for others. Im sure things will work out for you in the end! Im in Ireland and we don't celebrate but Happy 4th of july to you!

Im not too sure what actually made it come back for me, I think it was a mixture of lots of things. I also wanted to mention I went to an osteopath for 3 treatments and  I was diagnosed with chronic stress and he thought me how to deal with stress and now do a little yoga some days and listen to meditative cds to relax.

I would recommend maybe up your calories a little, I eat anywhere between 1800 - 2100 and my weight has stablisied at about 115 (it was 118 yday when i weighted by it may have been water retention). It will come back for you, it just takes time which is hard to hear but I really believe it teaches us patience

My story is I came off bcp in jan 08 and I got a period in june 08 and didn't get another one till today, around that time I upped my exercise intensity and decreased my calories to about 1200 and lost weight ( approx 12lbs) so I was 5f3" and 107lb. I did a lot of heavy weight lifting and my body fat dropped to abot 12% so while I never looked very skinny I had more of an athletic body.

In april I got serious about getting my period back, went to the doctor got my hormones tested and my oestrogen was low which I expected, I got provera from her even though she didn't want to give it to me. I did get a bleed from provera. Diet wise I stopped counting calories and ate what I felt like with no restrictions, i cut my exercise by 75% so now I do 45mins 3X a week with 10min light cardio and some weights. When I started gaining weight I noticed more discharge coming.

Im now 118lb and bmi 21 i think.

Health & Support Has anyone.. May 03 2009

I upped my calories to over maintanence (1800) and went from 107-118 from feburary to end of march, I have never weighted more then 118. I have cut down on exercise and now do 45minutes 3 times a week, usually 30minutes weights and 15minutes cardio. I have a heart rate monitor and eat back what I burn so when I workout I usually eat upto 2200 kcals. A typical day I eat:

8am Breakfast: bowl of all bran with full fat milk, bowl of oatmeal mixed with peanut butter, sunflower seeds and flax seed, cup of tea

11.30 Lunch 1: 2 eggs scrambled, natural yoghurt and some pumpkin seeds

2.00 Lunch2: Salad with lettuce, onion, pepper, tuna in oil, dressing, hommous.

4.00 Snack: Banana

6.00 Dinner: Turkey breast, lots of veg, olive oil, chopped tomatoes, either lentils or pasta and herbs and after 2 squares of dark chocolate.

8.30 Snack: Oatmeal and peanut butter

10.30: yougurt with strawberries and cottage cheese.

I have never had an eating problem and all my hormones were normal when they were tested other than estrogen being a little low.

Im have been maintaining the last couple of months and during that time I have eaten out a couple of times. Usually I just eat normally all day but maybe a small bit lighter throughout the day and then think of the meal out as my dinner. It takes 3500 calories over your maintanence calories to gain 1lb of fat so I would just enjoy your meal and try not to worry about it.

Yes I think its very possible, my doctor told me when my period returns it will probably be light and not last very long in the beginning.

From what I can rememer I have had my thryoid tested, estrogen, proestrogen, LH, FSH, Testosterone, and I think a test for diabetes maybe. She said everything was fine but estrogen a little low but not pre menopasual low.

I eat very healthy, I don't track my food here I use another website. My maintanence is 1800 calories, I have been experimenting and have come up with that number. Last week I did no exercise and eat that amount and stayed that same weight. I lift heavy weights but I have cut down to 3 workout days per week (used to do 7!), I wear a heart rate monitor and I eat back everything that I burn.I eat nearly 100g of natural peanut butter a day as its calorie dense and helps me to meet my fat and calorie goals.

I think that it may be a energy balance as to why my period is gone so thats why I have cut down on exercise, Im also planning on taking a full week off every 3-4 weeks. Both other times my period has come back I was 107lb and exercising 7X week, the only difference was that I wasn't stressing about it or thinking about it!!

I have been doing ALOT of research lately and have found some studies done showing a lack of them vitamins along with over exercise can cause amenorrhea. Im not sure if I am actually lacking in anything but I figure its worth a try at this stage. I was worried about PCOS but guess the dr wouldve picked it up with all the tests they have done.

Since gaining weight I have started getting a small bit of white discharge (sorry if thats TMI) which I havn't had in over a year so im guessing thats a good sign. Im stressed cause I want it back so bad :(

Im doing the proestrogen challenge next week after convincing the doctor to leave me, even though I know the bleed I get after it will just be because stopping taking the proestrogen but Im hoping it will kick start everything!

I just wanted to say im in the same situation too :(

I came off the pill in Jan 08 and didn't get a period until June 08, around that time I lost weight. I went from about 115lb to 107lb but I did it in a healthy way and never cut my calories below 1500. I didn't get another period until Nov 08 but it was really really light and only lasted about 3 days.

Since then I have gotten nothing :( From Jan 09 I have concentrated on gaining back all the weight I have lost, I have cut down on exercise im eating over 70g of fat everyday and eating 1800-2200 calories everyday. I have been to the doctor lately and got all my hormones tested, they all came back fine other than estrogen being a little low but now too low she said. The doctor says my period will come back I just have to wait, which is the most frustrating thing! Oh I also started taking omega 3, iron, zinc, vitamin B and C supplements to see if this helps!
