Weight Loss Calorie confusion is 700 a day okay for me? May 27 2009

The easiest way to get the exact figure you need is to set your activity level in options to Light, then add in how many hours hiking and other exersizes in your log.

Then look at your burn metre(thats how many calories your body needs to maintain your weight) . If you want to lose 1lb a week you need to under eat your burnt calories by 500 per day, so subtract this from your burn metre and what's left is how much you should eat.

The 1200 calorie intake is the absolute minimum, unless you do very little exersize and have a desk job, you should be looking at no less than 1400, and with a lifestyle such as yours, much more.

Foods Do you believe the cals in prepackaged food? May 14 2009

260 sounds resonable if its a roll, but if its a sub then definatly not.

I usually believe nutritional info but yesterday i was looking at my food log and i noticed that 300g of preacked potato wedges in oil and herb dressing was supposed to be 180cal, but when i put in 300g of just raw potato on CC,for my jacket potato it was over 200 calories for 280g.

I dont believe potato wedges in an oil dressing can be less than the same weight in raw otato, so either CC is wrong, or the packet is!

The Lounge Sleeping with a friend?! May 13 2009

I guess not everyone will agree with me here, and i have nothing against those who have casual sex but...

I personally think that you should never sleep with anyone you do not see yourself being with in the future, or are willing to have a child with. No BC is 100% effective (not saying this because to lecture,i know from experience!) So unless your willing to cope with the possibility of a pregnancy and the decision that comes with it, wait until you know 100% that you want to take the step into a relationship.

Once you do it you can never go back, take the time to make a decision before you jump into it, because you have to be able to take whatever occurs because of your decision (a child, ruining your friendship, having a good time, starting a meaningful relationship).

Definatly talk to him about it and express your feelings, if he is such a good friend i woulnt think it would hurt.

Motivation Frustration with healthy eating comments. May 11 2009

I actually have the complete oposite problem! My fammily and bf always think i'm eating too much despite being on 1400 calories.

This morning my bf said to me 'What am i going to save you from?....A bar of chocolate?' After i jokingly said he should be my hero too after he saved a woman at work from falling down three flights of stairs.

He also started ranting at me for uping my calories to 1400 because he coudnt see how upping calories could make me loose weight.

Derogatory comments from people who just dont understand anything about halthy eating REALLY annoy me, i often wonder if they are as ignorant as they seem or if they are trying to be mean because they ae jealous!

This has been frustrating me too, and i almost always weigh my food even salad dressings and then use the 'other' options.

I find that things like '1 egg' and '1 medium apple'  are rarely ever close to the the products i have and do always have to weigh them. It's not such a big deal as i manually put in all my food label data anyway because i find it usually differs quite alot from the american versions.

I think the biggest frustration for me the huge variety of packaged goods that are suggested in recipies that are just not available here. I bought a cook book recently that was american and pretty much every recipie calls for some kind of product i cant buy.

The cup thing also is a bit of a bother because i usually only cook for one and trying to measure 7/8th's or 2/3 of a cup  is pretty difficult to do accuratly when i only have 1 and 1/4 measuring cups. I usually have to weigh out a cup to convert it to grams in order to get things right. I never really understood why cups were used instead of grams, grams seem more acurate and easy to use to me and i dont have to keep 10 different measuring cups in my cubourd, just one scale.

I just looked up reading and its between 70 and 100cal per hour, a sedatory person burns 70 cals per hour just from normal bodily functions so it does sound about right.

We've been at this three solid weeks and have already lost over 70 pounds! We've cut back enough calories to feed someone 2000 calories a day for 4 months!

Wow that actually is something to think about! If we all sent our extra calories to africa we could save alot of people!

Foods HOW MUCH on groceries EACH WEEK? May 10 2009

Im in the UK and i end up spending the equivelent of $70-80 per week just on myself(inc household stuff and dry cat food).

It amazes me how fresh vegetables can be so expensive when i can buy junk food like pizza and burgers for half the price!

Foods how accurate are expiration dates? May 09 2009
20:35 (UTC)

Flybe is right, there is usually a bit of lee way on the exiration date, dry, canned or frozen foods may be fine months after the expirery date. In the UK we have Use by and expirery dates, generally fresh food hase a use by like dairy, meat and veg.

unopened vacume sealed food will usually be fine a week after expirery unless its raw meat.

Dairy such as soft cheese and milk dont use after a few days of the expirery because they go off quick and might make you ill, definatly throw the dairy away because 1-2months is FAR too long.

If the hotdogs/tapioca are canned then they should still be fine, if they are fresh then throw them away as there could be all kinds of bacteria on the meat and dairy, you really do not want to be eating fresh food that has been sat in liquid and exposed to the open air for weeks.

In your case i'd say throw everything thats been opened because they are all weeks/months old.

You must have an imaculate house because if i left any open food in my fridge for more than a week or two it would defenatly be mouldy!

The Lounge Ladies, how do you stay fresh? May 08 2009
22:44 (UTC)

I generally only give myself a good clean with an upfacing shower head, no soap or anything and never had any problems.

At one time when i would be doing alot of walking and activity in the day i used some feminine deoderant that kept me sweat free, it didnt seem to interfear with anything.

The Lounge I hate my contraceptive pill!! May 08 2009

I would agree with getting by with condoms if your starting a fammily and just utting up with the bad periods for a few months so nothing interfears with fertility.

On the BC side of things, in the last year ive been on 4 different kinds(one was microgynon), and was finally put on a progesteron only mini-pill because of a medical condition they found i had.

I found it to be amazing, im on a brand called cerazette (active ingredient called desogestrel) and my periods have completly stopped, apparantly its very very common for the type of pill. other than that ive had absolutly no side effects unlike the previous ones i was on. Its the only mini-pill available in the UK that still has a 12 hour period to take unlike the other progesterone only pills which are 3hours.

I have the same problem, i live in a city right next to two really big roads so i cant bear the thought of jogging past so many people. Ive had derogetory comments from men before just walking down the street so i really dont wanna have that when im jogging.

Ive settled for buying a trampoline jogger and getting a bit fitter before i jog outside, its really low impact on the feet and ankles so i find it pretty good :)

I like mine with peri peri sauce or vinegar.

Ive found helmans extra light mayo to be good with tuna because it does taste a litte vinegery and its only 15cal per table spoon.

Light creme fraiche also isnt too bad, but i dont like it as much as light mayo.

pomegranite sounds nice, its a shame that they dont apear to sell it at my local supermarket.

I really like tetley pepermint punch. I never liked herbal tea before but i think it's because i never brewed it strong enough and it just tasted like water. I'm finding now if i let it infuse for 5mins it doesnt need anything adding to taste good.

Weight Loss Can someone explain how you can hit a plateau if calories burned are always higher than calories in? May 04 2009
19:11 (UTC)
15

The basic calories in vs calories out is right...but everyone is different. Two people of the same age height and weight will have different metabolism's so you can never get your exact burn rate unless you have medical tests done, its just an estimate.

The metabolism can change too, eating an exact calorie intake for long periods can cause the body to adapt. I think the idea behind calorie cycling is that you fool your body into thinking that your not constantly eating less so your metabolism doesnt slow down.

Foods Can too much protein hinder weight loss? May 04 2009

Thanks for the info :)

I'm quite sedatory at the moment, so none of that protein would be going towards muscle, just energy.

The murcury thing is a bit scary though as i rarely eat anything but fish now.

Foods Flaw in low-calorie food?? May 04 2009

I have cupa soup quite often but never as a meal replacement. Its good every so often when you start craving food but not particularly healthy. BUT my reasoning is that its better than binging on high calorie food thats far worse.

My local supermarket sells fresh soup that is under 125 calories per bowl and looking at the ingredients its far healthier than the instant and has no words i cant pronounce.

There are plentry of low calorie foods out there that are good for you such as fruits, veg and grains.

A medium jacket potato for examle is 150cal and ive heard some fantastic recipies for kale and sweet potato chips on CC.

Young Calorie Counters Just wondering.. 1,200 calorie diet? May 03 2009
21:57 (UTC)

I'm 21 so only a couple of years out of my teens. I'm 5'2 and spend about 16 hours a day doing PC related work which means im sedatory.

For me 1200 isnt dangerous at all, because of my height and activity level it actually only gives me a defecit of 400 calories, my burn rate is only 1600 a day.

SO if your short, and sedatory 1200 is ideal, if your over 5'5 and active then Yes it can be dangerous.

I Eat breakfast, two large cooked meals per day and even have room for snacks because i eat high fiber, filling healthy food and eat on average 1.5kg of food in my 1200 calories plus 6litres of water a day. 1200 is VERY manageable IF you eat the right kind of foods, im very rarely hungry now and i think i was averaging over 3000 calories a day before i changed my diet and that was less than a month ago.

So many people look at 1200 and say its dangerous, but they don't know all the facts. I weigh 132lb but my figure compares to other woman who are 165+ (i am a size 14US 16UK) because of my height and if i ate the 1800 suggested by the second posted id actually be eating ABOVE maintenance.

The majority of teens are growing and if they are not sedatory then 1800 is about right, but please dont scare and lecture people on 1200 without knowing their stats.

*Edit* Ive been 5'2 since i was 14years old and pretty much stopped growing at that age, so my burn rate in my teens is pretty much the same as it is now.
