| Pregnancy & Parenting | Group Strep B Positive | Jul 07 2009 19:08 (UTC) |

Hi there, I had group B step and gave birth (vaginally) to a baby 18 months ago to a little girl who did not contract the step virus. However - I'll give you a word of warning... I had a horrible experience as a result of the antibiotics they gave me during delivery for the strep B. Apparently, the antibiotics kill off all the bad strep b bacteria, but they can also kill off all the good bacteria in your system, leaving your immune system compromised and making you susceptible to picking up other bugs. This is what happened to me. I felt fine after delivery, but within 2 days of giving birth, I became violently ill with what I can only describe as the WORST stomach pain accompanied by cold chills and diarrhea. (Gross - I know.) I thought it was just my body adjusting to having given birth so I waited a week to see if it would pass. It did not. I went to my primary care Dr. and they ran some tests. Turns out - I picked up a nasty bug while we were in the hospital called "C-diff." It's very commonly contracted in hospitals and nursing homes and it is SUPER hard to get rid of. I had to start taking antibiotics right away, which meant I had to stop breast feeding. :-( Very sad...(When my daughter was finally getting the hang of it!) Anyhow, every time I stopped taking the antibiotics, the C-Diff would come back. It took 3 full months and 4 different types of antibiotics before that darn C-diff went away. It was AWFUL! Here's my advice - be very careful after you've had the antibiotics during delivery. Wash your hands as often as possible while your in the hospital. Insist that all nurses or other staff coming into your room or touching you washes their hands before they touch you. Be very conscious of touching the hospital stuff (bed, sink, toilet, remote control, etc.) and make sure to wash your hands well after everything you touch - especially before you eat or drink or put your hands near your mouth. That may sound alarmist, but I would hate for anyone to be afflicted with that disgusting C-diff that I had. Plus -I learned that those hand sanitizing gels don't kill C-diff. You physically have to wash your hands with soap and hot water to kill it or use bleach on the surfaces such as sinks, toilets, etc.. It was awful, so just be aware of that and make sure you're really good about washing up well while you're in the germ factory, Oh... I mean hospital. :-) I'm sure you'll be fine. Hopefully, what happened to me was a freak thing. :-) |

| Weight Loss | 5'7" medium frame goal weight | Jul 03 2009 17:33 (UTC) |

I'm 5'8" - medium build. I'm currently at 160 and my goal weight is 140. I have been smaller in my lifetime, but don't think that any smaller than 140 is realistic for me anymore. (Especially not after having a baby - the ol' body is just not the same anymore.) I'd like to be in a nice healthy size 6 or 8. :-) But who knows... I've been exercising regularly and weight training, so maybe my old body will reappear eventually! |

I don't know if you have cable TV or not, but I have seen a program that the Discovery Channel does called "House Calls." It's on the Fit Tv channel. They go to homes of various people and help them find exercises to do right in their homes without any special equipment needed. They use regular household items you already have lying around. They come up with some AMAZING ideas that may be of help to you. Try and check out the website where you can watch some of the viedo clips from the show - http://fittv.discovery.com/videos/house-calls -david-diabetic-health.html Good luck - Cari |

| Foods | Sneaky - High Calorie SALADS - Beware! | Jul 02 2009 20:05 (UTC) |

Hi there - yes there was cheese and croutons. Less than an ounce of shredded cheddar if I had to eyeball it. Maybe 10-12 croutons. Nothing that made me shudder when I saw it. It's not a HUGE salad either. I'd say about a medium sized one. They must cook the chicken in butter or something to pile up all those calories. Surely they snuck a big brownie in there somewhere too, I must have missed that under the lettuce. |

If you don't want to have to make anything yourself - I LOVE the Giant Ice Cream Sandwich bars from Weight Watchers. (The Cookies & Cream is my favorite.) They're 140 calories and very satisfying for calming a sweet tooth. :-) At home - you might try making up a batch of Fat Free/Sugar Free Hot Cocoa and then pour it into an ice cube tray & freeze it. You'd have little chocolately cubes from that. |

Pizza hut pizza - 2 slices of the pan pizza AND a breadstick dipped in marinara. UUUGGGHH! It was good, but yes, I regret it. I wish I would have at least shown some restraint and just had once slice. I'm so weak when faced with temptation! |

Congats everyone! These are some wonderful successes. I started CC on March 23rd as of today, April 20th, I am down 10 lbs! Wooo Hoo! That was enough to get me out of my post-pregnancy size 14 clothes and back into some pre-pregnancy size 12's. These are things that were skin tight and un-zippable just a few weeks ago. I went ahead and bought a cute new pair of jeans in a size 10 just to keep me motivated to keep on losing. :-) |

Hi Kez3, It sounds like you are struggling with some issues. I have no idea if you're headed into full blown anexoria or not, but it seems like you have lost a significant amount of weight in a pretty short time AND you're restricting your calories to under 1,000 a day. I think you should seek out someone to talk to. Like Gem mentioned, maybe start with a counselor at school? If not, perhaps an older sister or a trusted Aunt, even a friend's Mom or something like that. Someone is going to need to talk through all of these things with you and help you get to a doctor for an evaluation. The depression and isolation you're describing are not good things and certainly not something that you want to spend your young years going through alone. Do you have someone in your life that you could talk to about all of this? I'm going to be praying for you. I know you're going through a rough time. Please seek out some help...soon. |

Thanks you guys. I guess that makes sense. Me, being a crazy little "type-A" personality hates getting an "F" on any type of report. Crazy, I know. |

Hello Mamma's (Alana, Maureen, Jodi, Jessica, Jamie, et all.) My name is Cari. I'm 35, married and a first time Mom to a beautiful little girl named Abigail. She was born November 24, 2007. :-) I am going to copy & paste some info from my bio so that I don't have to type it all out again. :-) Sorry for the long post. Here are my current stats: Height - 5' 8" current weight - 173 Here's my crazy story: I got married at age 19 (in hind sight - stupid move on my part,) moved from Florida to California with my husband who was in the military back in 1993. I gained about 15 lbs over a period of 3 years or so, just eating with my husband. Over time, I think I had started to eat the same portions he was eating and that was the problem. I had no business eating that much food. In about 1995, I learned about a revolutionary medical weight loss plan called "Phen - Fen." I lived in California then and it was all the rage! I went to one of the weight loss centers, paid exorbitant amounts of money each month for about a year and lost a ton of weight. It was so easy (it was just 2 pills to take each day) and I was thrilled to be back to a little tiny size 4 or 6 again. The problem was, once you stopped taking the medication, you were hungry again and you gained the weight back, so I kept going in and renewing my prescription every time I would gain some weight. Eventually, Phen-Fen was banned and I could no longer get it. I gained all the weight I had lost back within another couple years. :-( After 7 years, my marriage ended. That's a very long story. While going through a divorce, I lost all the weight again. In fact, I was down to a very unhealthy weight and could fit into a size 2! At 5 ' 8 with a medium build, a size 2 just shouldn't be happening. I was so devastated by the divorce that all I felt like doing was smoking and drinking diet coke. I was eating practically nothing. It was a sad time, but I was happy to be shedding the pounds. I left California after my divorce in 1999-2000 and moved clear across the country to Boston. I just wanted a fresh new start in a place that nobody knew me or knew about my divorce. I managed to keep the "divorce weight" off for several years. I met a wonderful man at the end of 2001 and by 2003, I moved from Boston to Virginia to be near him. Once again, I started eating with him and putting on some weight, but it was manageable. I guess when I'm in a happy time in my life (especially with a man) I seem to eat more. "Fat & happy" I guess! I would take over-the-counter diet pills here and there to try and help me shed some lbs. Dexatrim, Hydroxy cut, you name it... I probably tried it. Anyhow, I married this man, now my hubby (And the TRUE love of my life,) Toney in 2005. When we married, I was a little heavier than I wanted, but still not out of control. I was about 140ish and in a size 8. Since 2005 when we married, I had started gaining a little more weight and by early 2007, I was up to about 155 lbs and in a size 10 or 12. Again, I was still taking various diet pills on and off again that I ordered form online pharmacies - heaven knows what I was taking! I would try to starve myself for several days at a time in a vain attempt to shed some weight. Then... in March of 2007 I got pregnant and all my diet schemes went out the window!!! Of course I stopped trying to diet and I ate and ate and ate during my pregnancy. I'd love to join your Mom's weight loss group becuase I figure there are least a couple other ladies who share my same struggles and we could support one another and hold each other accountable. Nobody knows how busy Mom's are besides other Moms! It is nice to meet everyone. Again, sorry for the LONNNNGGG post! I hope to make some friends and become weight loss buddies with some of you. :-) - Cari |

Ditto that - Don't quit! 14 lbs is pretty significant! That's really good. I'll bet you're also losing some inches. Maybe you could stay motivated if you take all of your measuremetnts and log them down and then track them regulary. I find that losing a inch here and there are really good motivators to keep at it. Also, go out and try on jeans. Find a pair that is currently pretty tight and hard to get buttoned up. Buy them and keep them hanging in your bedroom or bathroom as your motivation to keep going. Set small goals and you'll find the will power to continue.
We might be able to offer advice if you tell us about what you're doing/eating/exercising, etc. Hang in there! |

| Foods | Shirataki Miracle Noodles? | Mar 27 2009 19:50 (UTC) |

I have tried some of these noodles. They are used in making an Japanese dish called "shabu, shabu." I found them at my local Asian Grocery store and I live in a pretty small town, so I would guess they would be relatively easy to come by in larger cities. Just search your yellow pages for Asian Grocers. Then call and ask if they carry "Shiratake" (sheer-uh-tockey) noodles. The packages I have purchased also say "Yam" noodles. Ditto to what everone else says about the liquid in the package. I think they are packaged in brine which is pretty fishy smelling. Just rinse them well several times. They are a pretty slimey consistency, but I still thought they were good. They definitely seem to soak up some of the flavor from the sauce you put them in. joyhorvath - The "girlfredo" sauce made with laughing cow cheese, lite sour cream and parmesan sounds like a great recipe! I'm going to check out that site. Thank you for the tip. :-) |

Hi Flamel, You mentioned that you hardly eat any veggies except for salad. I understand the teeth problems on raw veggies. Now, are you not eating cooked or steamed veggies because you don't like them or because you don't want to take the time required to cook them? If you like them - I would recommend my new favorites - Frozen Veggie Steamers! Green Giant and Birds Eye both make frozen veggies in bags that you can pop right into the microwave and steam them in just a few minutes. That's all you do - no work required! I often eat a whole bag at a time. The bag I have right here is from Birds Eye and it is cut green beans. The calories if you eat the entire bag is only 120! That is zero fat, cholesterol or sodium. For the whole bag you'd have 20 g Carbohydrates, 8 g of fiber, 8 g of sugar and 4 g of protein. I find this to be pretty darn filling. You can add some seasoning of your choice or spray with fat free butter spray. I sometimes pour a little taco sauce or salsa on them to jazz 'em up. Also, most grocery stores are now selling pre-cut veggies in steamer bags in their fresh veggies section near the bagged lettuce. These would all be good options for you to include with your daily meal plans and the're super easy to pop in the microwave. I hope that helps. :-) |

I am a big fan of mustard too. I actually make my own lo-cal salad dressing with it, mixing it with a little salsa and some water. I dip tons of things in mustard. I actually found that Grey Poupon makes a creamy dijon mustard with ZERO calories! How cool is that? It tastes really good, although, I know it has no real nutritional value. Still - if it has no calories, I'm all over it. |
