Your post is a little confusing. You say that you know it's impossible for women to get bulky when lifting weights but then say that you want to put it off until after you've lost the weight because you're afraid to turn out muscular or bulky. Women can NEVER turn bulky or too muscular. The female bodybuilders or models you see all have very low bodyfat and possibly get some helps from their diet (supplements). I'm not sure what kind of weights you're lifting but even if you're lifting heavy there's no way that you'll magically bulk up. I would suggest that you do a 3-day split and 3 days of cardio.

A little late but would love to join. I'm 30, 5'5" and 166lbs. I've been married for 7 months and am planning on starting a family at the end of this year. For some reason I keep thinking to myself that I need to lose some weight before this, which sounds so silly and am glad it seems that I'm not the only one! I discovered I had endometriosis last year and by the next week of I went into surgery to have it removed. After that I was on a hellish 6-month hormone treatment, which I would not like to repeat ever again. There is perhaps a link between diet and weight so I would like to change it to prevent such a recurrence - or any questions to myself in whether I should have made changes sooner or such. My next check up is in May and would like to lose weight by then because I've kept gaining since the wedding. My doctor mentioned it to me on my last check up in November and I felt so embarrassed. I was 154 lbs in mid-August, by mid-December I was 161lbs and after Xmas & New Years I was up to my all-time high of 167. I'd like to get back to 154 and then have an additional 20 lbs to lose. My workouts are 3 days strength split (legs, shoulders/chest, back/biceps), 1 day workout DVD (kickboxing) and 2-3 days cardio. I'm having trouble getting my cardio in because we don't have the equipment in our place but this week may change since hubs is also wanting to get fit. He's planning on starting in with workouts at the apartment gym. I'll tag along and use the bike or treadmill then. |

Your husband may be right but it's only if the person (a) lift weights regularly like 3 - 5 day split (b) lifts heavy (b) doesn't have lots of weight to lose The reasoning is possibly that if you do too much cardio, and don't have much fat to lose, you'll start burning both fat AND muscle. |
