Foods Eating Like Other Cultures Nov 28 2009

I cook lots of thai and am starting to learn some indian dishes (I'm american).  They are my favorite cuisines and if I make them at home I can control everything that's in it (oil, etc.) and it still comes out delicious.  And as you say, you can put together quite a feast for a small amount of calories.  Even when I stir fry and/or use coconut milk I can keep it under 600 calories and eat like a queen.

I loooooooooove food and turning it into a great experience is exactly the way to make it satisfying and enjoying.  For me, simply learning to cook new dishes is excitement enough.  I really enjoy shopping for fresh veggies and new spices, coming home and planning out the meal, etc.

Motivation How do you convince yourself that it's worth it? Nov 28 2009

I have felt exactly the same way in the past.  And I can still slip into it now and again.  I especially understand the idea that it's gonna take SO long to lose all the weight, why bother?  But someone on here wrote something once about how you can start and be down 10 or 20 or even 50 pounds down a year from now.  Or you can NOT start and be exactly where you are today.  If I don't start, nothing's ever going to change.  That really hit home for me.

It's taken me 8 months to lose 50 pounds.  And I've got a ways to go yet (at least 35 more).  But I know sometime in the next year (or two, or three) I'll get there.  You will not ever get there if you don't try.  If you DO try, the worst that can happen is nothing.  And that's pretty unlikely.

It takes about 3500 calories to gain or lose a pound.  You would need to consume 10,500-14,000 calories OVER your normal daily requirements to gain that much in one day.  That seems highly, highly unlikely.

Don't be so hard on yourself!  You went overboard, OK.  But it was your birthday, an exceptional circumstance, and it's over now.

Today's a new day.  Think about the positive choices you can make today.

Original Post by jannid:

it is one day, one meal. Choose the things you truly love and enjoy them.

If you are having wine, have a glass of water first and then after before considering a second glass.

Eat slowly and talk lots. Go for a walk before and after the meal.

Eat a good breakfast/lunch before hand because saving calories for a deified treat or meal usually backfires into too much hunger and a binge.

Ditto for eating those things you think you SHOULD have when you would really rather have something else. You will end up not being satisfied and feel like the day is ruined and then eat an entire pie because you are miserable.

Enjoy the meal and eat well the rest of the time, you'll be fine.

ps - your body needs carbs, proteins, and fat to be healthy. The thing is proportion. Easy to find that info here on CC with the search bar.

Great advice!  This is pretty much my plan of attack as well.

In addition this year, I volunteered to make a side dish and a dessert, so I can make them super yummy but consider the calorie and fat content when choosing what I'm making and ingredients and such.

I'm not gonna go looking, but from the top of my head I've got:

Freezer - various morningstar farms products (veg bacon, chick patties, etc.), quorn naked cutlets, frozen fruit, baggies of frozen homemade veg chili (I live alone and when I make chili I make a huge pot and freeze it in individual servings), Edy's slow churned ice cream (my weakness)

Fridge - organic skim milk, organic eggs, laughing cow cheese, cheddar cheese, carrots, broccoli, a bit of turnip, 1/2 bag of fields greens, two kinds of green curry paste, red curry paste, lite coconut milk, lots of asian sauces and condiments, 1/4 block of organic tofu, some homemade salad dressing, fat free mayo and various other condiments

Cupboards - red lentils, green lentils, brown rice, white jasmine rice, whole grain pasta, canned pumpkin, jackfruit (canned), mangosteens (canned), a few asian sauces I haven't opened yet, olive oils, flavored wok oils (onion, toasted sesame, etc.), braag's liquid aminos, various vinegars (red wine, balsamic, etc.), flour, sugar, baking soda, brown sugar, vanilla, all that good stuff, loads and loads of herbs and spices, sea salt, peppers, curry powders, etc. 3-4 kinds of black tea and one herbal tea

That about covers it.

Foods Where to get relatively cheap curry seasoning? Nov 18 2009

Original Post by merylwhite1:

People who have curry as a staple of their diet are probably not buying curry paste, they would be making their own.

I second an Indian or Asian grocery.

I eat curries twice a week or more and I don't make my own.  I get my curries at indian and asian groceries as well.  And being that I cook for myself only, a small can of paste for 99 cents can last for 3-5 meals, depending.

I also buy fancier stuff too.  But the asian grocers tend to have better prices than the regular markets.

I actually drink tons of water - it's about all I drink.  I bring a reusable bottle to work and just keep refilling it all day long.  Tagging sounds like a fun game, though.  :)

As for my running - I still haven’t run since my race at the beginning of October.  Since my knees were getting really sore at the end of my training (I was taking ibuprofen once a week or so to get to sleep at night) I’ve decided to take the winter off and give them a rest.  I plan to start up again in the spring.

I’ve been continuing my yoga and trying to decide what kind of cardio I might want to pick up in the meantime.  I went for long walks and did some hiking over the weekend.  So I'm still doing SOMEthing, just not as much as I was.  There are elliptical machines and treadmills in the fitness room in my building, I just have to venture up to it.  I’m hoping to get into a new routine in the next week or so.

LOVE dresses.  I can always find something flattering, they make me feel feminine and pretty and even at a larger size, I like my legs.  They are curvy and shapely.

I don't wear anything I hate.  I really love clothes and fashion and I can't imagine leaving the house hating what I have on my body.  Sure, I've got some blah clothes and I have stuff I like more than others, but not hate.

I DO hate that I have a dress code where I work (suits preferred, etc.) and it's actually a driving factor for me to go into business for myself.  So no one tells me what I can wear or not wear every day.

I'm a bit of a hybrid.  I weight myself every day knowing that my weight can fluctuate for various reasons.  But, I have my official weight in day once a week.  For me it's the best of both worlds. If on my official weigh in day I'm up a little bit, but know my weight has been lower for most of the week I'm confident that I just hit a bloat day.  The number one thing I look at is my trend line overall going down.

That's me exactly as well.  I like the daily check-in but I only record it once a week.

And actually, we could maybe use a new thread.  The original poster from this one is long gone and it might attract a few more people.  I mean, I'm happy with the just 3 of us regularly posting too, but a few more wouldn't hurt either.  :)

Not the loss I was hoping for, but it was a loss nonetheless.  I think I'm becoming OK with how much my loss has slowed down over the last 2 months.  I feel like I've been trying to get to 170 forEVER.  I was pretty frustrated and impatient at first, but now I'm realizing I'm in it for the long haul.  If I make my first goal (150) in January or I make it next July, I'm still gonna make it.

My first goal is 150.  I started at 220.   I'll see where I'm at when I get there.  My next goal may be 135.  I made it down to that by doing weight watchers in high school (I've been overweight all of my life) but I only sustained it about a year.  I'm not sure I could even get that low again.  Not sure I want to.

We'll see.

Wow, I never saw this as the same argument as the one I've had about religion countless times, but it is.  I think some people believe the that the only way to truly believe in something is to make others believe it too.  One can believe that Christianity is the only way to live or that vegetarianism is the only way to live.  Where it gets tricky is when one begins to talk about what's "kadosh" or "sacred."  So, if one is Christian, the only way to truly be a Christian is to separate oneself from anyone who isn't or to convert them.  Now we're talking about food or diet, and not religion.   Or are we.  Several people have brought up the morality of vegetarianism.  Is it inherent in your vegetarianism to make me be a vegetarian too?  I can see the case that it's easier to date a vegetarian.   But isn't it also easier to date someone who is of your same religion?  Yet if someone told me, "I only date people who are Christian, just because it's easier," I really wouldn't respect that person or their opinion.  I say, live and let live.  I live by my principles, and I don't mind sharing where my principles come from when someone wants to know.  Somehow, I just think it's wrong to consider ones-self as kadosh for any reason -- what they believe in or what they eat.

By the way, I chose Christianity as it is the most popular religion in my area.  However this concepts to any faith that has an element of Kadosh or "holier than thou" traits.

While I see what you're saying, I think certain traits can tell you a lot about a person.  Their religion means something and it says somethign about who they are.  I personally choose not to date conservative Christians because often times that means our very values are so different it's not going to work long term (me being an extremely liberal atheist).  I don't think that's being holier-than-thou, I think it's being practical.   At my age, I'm thinking about a partner in terms of marriage as well, which means I want to be with someone who holds the same values I'd want instilled in children.

So while I don't think someone's diet would be a "deal breaker" in a relationship for me, personally, I think it would be a factor, for sure.

I'm excited to try a recipe I found for mashed potatoes where you substitute in cauliflower, so it's about half of each.  Add in a bit of fat free sour cream and some salt and pepper and it's got the warm, creamy goodness of mashed potatoes but greatly recuded in calories.

I'm also adding potatos and sweet potatoes to my stir fries.  A small amount really fills you up.

Ups and downs...  I had a kind of yucky week.  Lost all motivation and didn't really even count my calories this week.  And I've fallen out of all exercise routine, other than my Tuesday night yoga class.  Which I love, but it's not really a calorie-burner.

I'm happy I at least maintained.  Here's to jumping back on the wagon.

Oh how I know that feeling. Motivation is really our kicker. It's really good that you keep with yoga, something you love doing; maintaining your weight and glad to jump back onto the wagon. I have this quote that I keep on my cell phone: Motivation is what gets you going; Habit is what keeps you going. I really need to find that motivation!
