Really!! Everyone knows a kitchen is meant for storage for liquor and wine bottles. The only place cooking can be seen is in restaurants...at least in my experience. ;)

Cell phones in locker rooms.

How about when people talk on their cell phones while working out on a treadmill or eliptical? I don't know why, but that drives me nuts!! How can you get a good workout in while you are chatting away on the phone?

OH!!!  I SO AGREE!  I don't want to hear your conversation about who you hooked up with last night!  If you're talking to a friend next to you, fine, but save the phone calls for later.

Another one - I teach spin class and if I cue a 70% hill climb at a slow cadence.....at least try it.  Don't turn the resistance to 30% and spin at 110 RPMs.  It confuses the whole class, doesn't make you look more fit because we all know you don't have any resistance on, and you're not getting a full-rounded workout.  So there.

Congratulations, you triathlete!!!   My first sprint tri is over Labor Day, and your post (and the other's replies) gave me some good advice.  I'm a cyclist, and like you, figure I can walk during the run if needed, but most importantly, I'm hoping the slight chance of an alligator chasing me in the Florida lake cuts at least a minute off my swim time. Wink   But the hardest part was actually signing up and hitting the "submit" button.

You are an inspiration to many, Clint!

My hubby and I go to the movies (date night) every saturday and I love, love, love popcorn, so I get a small plain popcorn, adjust my cals for that day, and call it my treat.  I look forward to that treat every week.  It took a while to get used to going from the deliciously buttered popcorn with extra cheesy salt on it, but now I'm used to the unbuttered and love it just as much (well...almost).  I think it is mostly mental....you always associate going to the movies with munching on something.

Fitness For anyone who has a polar F6, I have a really simple question Aug 07 2009

I agree 100% with karozel - my wrist is 6" (about 2" across) and it fits fine, except when wrist are bent backwards.  I like the face size because it has 3 lines of information that is easily seen (but it's not exactly "fashionable").

As a side note, I had just posted the below as a response to another polar question post:

I have had a Polar F6 for about 3 years and ironically just sent it back for service (battery replacement and a new transmitter) because it wasn't accurately keeping my heartrate.  I realize 3 years is a long time and I wear it for some type of activity about 4 days a week, so I had no problem with the $50 invoice for its repair.  Before this, I never had a problem with it - if anything, it usually registers higher calorie burn that what the gym machines compute.

That is an excellent idea!  That way, we could keep an eye on if our friends were true to the nutrition and exercise goals and provide more encouragement if they go off track.  It should be an option in our profile....like "allow others to view food log" and "allow others to view activity log", or maybe an option for just friends to be able to view it - something similar to allowing people to view our journals.  I hope you suggest it and that it becomes an option.  Good luck and it's great that you are both on this site together, supporting each other!  PS - love your dogs!!!

As said above, make sure the sensors are wet, and tight around your chest (right under my boobs), perhaps go thru your setup again (maybe your weight or something was entered incorrectly) and give it a little time.  Polar's website isn't the best for support regarding technical issues, but you could try that avenue.  I'd say if it isn't working better in another week or two, and after trying the above, see if you can return it to the store for a replacement.  With the experience I've had with mine, I would highly recommend it, so maybe you just got a lemon.

Laura - you're off to a great start by just getting on that bike.  I started off in the D group (on a mountain bike), then moved up to the Cs when I got my road bike, and now made the jump and am comfortale with the Bs.  Regardless, riding with a group can be so much fun, very rewarding, great exercise (because you ride longer than you would by yourself and it goes quicker or so it seems) and you make great friends, even among the different groups.  Now if I want an easier social ride, I ride with the C's.....if I need to get my heartrate up and have been slacking on my exercise that week, I do the B's.  Regardless, going to breakfast afterwards with everyone is the BEST part (hummm...how do I log that french toast??!) haha.   Enjoy your bike and keep us up to date on your progress.

After days of riding by myself and "practicing" I thought I was finally used to unclipping from my Look Keo pedals, but wouldn't ya know, I went riding with my cycle group, and following an expected stop, fell right over onto the curb (but hey...at least I didn't fall the opposite way into traffic or create a domino effect with the other 10 riders).  Anyways....my mountain bike has the toe cages which I ride with semi-stiff mountain bike shoes with no clips, but my Trek 2.1 has the Look Keos, which I do think make a big difference in my riding efficiency.  You could go to a bike shop and ask their opinions (pros and cons) of the different clips (ie. SPD, lollipop, look).  Now if I could just get over the 'fear of fall'.  By the way...I name my bikes and couldn't think of a name for this one.  But my friend came up with one at happy hour - Eileen.  I lean....and I fall.  Haha - just had to share that.

In my opinion, cycle shoes without a doubt help!  Sneakers have flexible bottoms, which make your pedaling less efficient.  Cycle shoes have hard soles, so every stroke of the pedal is going 100% toward the cycling effort and nothing is lost in the bending of your foot.   My recommendation is a pair of mountain biking shoes - they are not quite as hard as road shoes and are less expensive (and you don't look odd wearing them into the gym or driving.  You can check out various styles at www.performancebike.com, or go to a bike store and look for styles on sale, since you don't have to really worry about what they are made of, weight, etc.  Also find out what type of pedal your gym uses.  You may want to get clips to match that pedal, or simply wear them as-is if your pedals have cages to hold your feet in.

So.....how'd it go??  Did you love it or hate it?  Just give it 3 times till you make up your mind.  That is usually how many classes it take until you build a little stamina and your bumm stops hurting.  Try to take different instructors because their styles and music will vary.

I love saying "hi" to cows and other animals as I pass (yeah, a little wacky, I know, but it's my thing...I live in a largely rural area).

Any of you women riders ride men's bikes? I am thinking of purchasing a used men's cannondale-I am 5'6" -bad idea?

Too funny - I talk to the animals too.  I'm sure they are thinking "look away... here comes the crazy bike lady".

I'm 5'6" and ride a men's 52 cm Trek 2.1 bike.  I found that the woman's bikes were too compact and I felt too schrunched up on them.  A men's bike should work for you IF it is the right frame size for your body.  Try it out.

My OMG moment started last week and has been ongoing ever since.  I've "only" lost 7 pounds at about 1 pound per week, and I say "only" because to me, it seems to be going verrrrry slllllooooowly.  But last week at work, about 2 people per day started to say "you're losing weight", "you look great", etc.  Woo Hoo.  Even though I'm not doing this for other people and outside image (more for health /aging issues), it sure does feel nice to know that others are taking notice.  Now if only I would have just gone to the gym today instead of napping....

Kool. What bike did you get? I go myself a new frame and groupset also, and will start putting the bike together soon. :)

Love my Gary Fisher mountain bike so much that I thought I'd stick with it and got a Trek 2.1.  It looks like a good starter road bike so I'll be able to keep up with my bike group.  I've been working for the past 2 days and it is driving me crazy because "she" is sitting in my office wanting to be riden.  Come on Friday!!!!!

Hi cola - So far in my case, the CC has been working.  For the first 3 days, I just ate what I normally did, and never realized how many calories I had been consuming - 2500+ mostly from snacking and happy hours.  Now I try to stay in the 1500-1700 range and log my meals religiously (sometimes even ahead of time so I stick to it) and it's amazing how much you can eat if you just make wise choices.  In 3 weeks, I'm down 5.5 pounds (slow and steady) and I'm happily surprised to say it hasn't been that hard at all.  I think I can stick with this new lifestyle.  Don't give up - with the help of this site and everyone's input and support, you can do it!

Ya know....you're right. I haven't gone out since I started CC and this new healthier lifestyle 3 weeks ago.  I've been coming up with excuses not to go out with friends and I just have to learn that I'm in control of what I drink and eat.  And I just entered all that food and beverage and so what if I'm 500 calories over today because I kicked butt at the gym yesterday.  I guess it is all give and take and tomorrow will be another day.  Thanks guys!

Fitness Does anyone know approx. how many calories are burned in spin class???? Apr 16 2009

UD - Try coming to Florida.  It's hot, humid AND flat. haha.  I spin 2 times a week and consistently burn 550-650 calories in an hour class.  I can tell during the class where I am calorie / effort wise and pick up the pace if I need too.  However, if I'm teaching the class, I back it off so that the class doesn't have to listen to me pant.

Haha - that is funny you mention that.  I tell all the beginner classes that they are going to be walking odd in the morning.  Some say a gel seat helps, but personally, I not a fan of them.  That area hurts because there are muscles there, and you aren't used to sitting on a skinny seat for an hour at a time.  Once you get used to it (again...the "everything gets better after 3 classes"), you'll be able to clench that area so that you're not "draping" over the seat, for lack of a better description.  Also, if you spin bike seat adjusts, move the seat the whole way forward so that you are centered over the back wider part of the seat - just make sure when your pedals are at 3 and 9 (horizontal), that your front knee isn't over (out in front) of your ankle (kindof of the same correct position that you use for front lunges).  If your instructor does a nice combination of in and out of the saddle, the soreness will go away.  Also, if you do jumps, make sure that you lift with your core and legs and when going back in the saddle, don't slam yourself down, but slowly ease yourself back using your core.

Another thing I forgot to mention - with spinning, you'll notice your increased endurance.  That is one of the hardest classes at the gym, and you should be commended for trying it.  You'll notice that walking up stairs gets easier, you'll have increased energy, get less winded and have greater stamina.  It is something that you will notice....you'll have one of those "Aha" moments.

Cycle shoes without a doubt help - you'll notice a BIG difference!  Sneakers have flexible bottoms, which make you pedaling less efficient.  Cycle shoes are hard, so every stroke of the pedal is going 100% toward the cycling effort and nothing is lost in the bending of your foot.

I read your bio and you've been on quite a journey.  I know it is discouraging when you start going up and down and the ups comes SOOOO much easier than the going down.  But it sounds like you are on the right track now.  I'm 42 so I know how hard it can seem - the pounds certainly don't come off like they did in the 20's and 30's, but we are on the path to a healthier lifestyle and it will take time.  Just keep at it and go slowly.

Hope you don't mind - I added you to my friends list.  Hey...you're my first!

Wow - you loved it after the first time?  Most people feel like they are going to puke (unless they specifically take a beginners class) and start to like it only after coming back 3 times.  Finding an activity that you love certainly makes it much easier to drag yourself to the gym.  Just make sure you adjust your resistance so that you are always getting a good workout, because it definitely gets easier with time.  I went from (almost) puking, to going once a week, twice a week, and now I'm an instructor and can still burn 500-700 cals in a class.  That happened over the course of 3 years, so it is certainly an activity that you can sustain and keep seeing results.  To answer your question, YES, it does get easier, but you don't want it to get TOO easy, and you can control that.  A heartrate monitor is an excellent too to gauge your workout.

On a side note, after spinning, since you just finished a great cardio workout and did some legwork, it's a great idea to head to the weights and do 15 minutes of simple upper body and abs.  That way, you got the best of both worlds in one fun trip to the gym.

Keep it up!  Enjoy!
Ann
