Sorry for the confusion. I really wanted to post just once a week (how everyone's doing) so that I make sure I don't miss anything. Well, my idea was you send me your seven day totals and I'll average them out and post the weekly average. That's how it'll work. If everybody gets them into me on Sunday, I can post them Monday! Hope everyone's doing fantastic, and keep on moving!

Pedometers are really cheap and easy to get these days. Mine came in a cereal box. I used to have a more expensive one, but I found they work the same! |

Oh, that sucks. Usually, as long as you're buying fruits and veggies that are in season I find it's cheap whether you're on the coast or inland. But then again, my husband and I live on the westcoast, so we're in the city but so close to the country...and we've really hunted for local places that have stuff... there's this one farmstand that has 49 cent a pound apples consistently so we stock up... they have all kinds of fruit... but you can get like $2.00 squash (big ones) at some places when in season... I guess it all depends where you live though. I don't suppose you can go direct to the farmers instead of the market or are they too far away? Or you can get your own fruit trees? Sounds weird but it can be a good investment. My husband and I are renting a suite - we just moved. In the old place we were allowed to have a garden so we planted strawberrys (they're pretty hardy and they come back year after year some even bear all spring and summer) and blueberrys raspberry canes, and all kinds of stuff. Berries are pretty pricy here too. When we moved we had to pull out that stuff, so some of it lives in my moms community garden plot now, but we have a small apple tree that's doing just fine in a pot and grapes and a pot of fresh herbs and raspberries all doing well in pots... So I don't know if you live in an apartment or a house or whatnot, but even if you just have a patio some of those plants could be a good investment (if your area is right for them). We had an apple tree in our backyard growing up and it gave us buckets and buckets AND BUCKETS of apples every year. And now they have fruit salad trees with different types of fruit branches grafted to the trunk, so you can have more than one kind of fruit from the same tree. Just something to think about. If you get fruit trees at the end of their planting season they're really cheap... |

| Fitness | anyone else think the elliptical is BS? | May 22 2009 22:55 (UTC) |

I actually find that the elliptical burns more than the treadmill, once I get a good rhythm going I can feel it in my arms and legs and evrywhere. I also find I lose more weight, sweat more, get a better workout on that than the treadmill, and I can sustain it for longer endurance (I have sports related knee injuries). and that I lose more weight (I switch it up sometimes between the various cardio machines at our gym). Also it helps that our gym has the expensive ellipticals, that are highly programmable... But that's just me. Everyone's body is slightly different and I think responds differently to different forms of cardio exercise. |

| Foods | Question about whole-grain pasta | May 22 2009 22:44 (UTC) |
|
You should try buckwheat pasta! My husband makes different kinds of pasta from scratch... It takes forever but the end result is phenomenal... he makes a butternut squash-yogurt-basil ravioli... mm I get shivers just thinking about it. But back on track, buckwheat pasta is a traditional Italian thing that's gained immense popularity over there. and its very good. Maybe I'm spoiled because I have asian markets everywhere, but what does eveyone think of the varieties of soba noodles - like buckwheat, whole wheat, potato, rice, brown rice, rice bran...? |

| Fitness | I started lifting weights and now I'm gaining weight??? | May 22 2009 22:21 (UTC) |

I totally agree. I started an intense circuit training cardio/strength weights routine about a month ago. I weighed myself last week and I gained two pounds. But I measured myself, and I had lost - 2 inches off waist, 0.5 inch off thighs, 1 inch off hips, and 3/4 inch off upper arms. So, you just have to wait it out. Weigh yourself every so often (once every week or so) always weigh yourself around the same time of day, in same clothes (so that you know the three pounds extra aren't just because you're weighing in after a big meal wearing sweats when last time you were wearing shorts). Take the measurements as more important than the weight for awhile. The fat will burn off. |

Do you buy fruit and veg from the grocery store? Or do you have farms or farmer's markets nearby you can go to? |

My husband and I only spend about $150-200 a MONTH... so $35-$50 a week, and we often have friends over to share that food! We buy our fruits and veggies from local markets and direct from local farms - it's a lot cheaper, not to mention more sustainable. We buy our fish from the docks (we have that luxury) and bulk items (egg whites, plain yogurt, chicken breasts) from Costco. Some of this money is spent shopping at specialty organic food shops (which are pricey). We can afford to be huge foodies, because we just save so much money buying local produce. For like 25-30 bucks we get a huge loaded box of goodies from the farm market to last us at least two weeks. Oh, and the other reason is we don't buy instant anything. No overly processed foods. No packages of cardboard like substances with powder that you just add heat and water to. We eat fresh food, and whole grains. It's just cheaper... Although I do agree with amorag. Don't shop when you're hungry or you'll buy things you don't intend to! Check out my group Transform Your Food!

| Weight Loss | Sad, angry, and frustrated | May 22 2009 21:47 (UTC) |

There are a few possibilities. Number one, if you cut your calories back too far it stimulates your body's famine response. It freaks out, thinking it's not going to get enough food, so when it gets more calories, it packs them away for the next "famine". That may be a part of what's happening to you. Your body just doesn't want to switch off the famine response. In regards to that, I have anothr question for you. How many meals do you eat a day? How often do you eat? When do you eat? These can sometimes be almost as important (but not quite) as what you eat. How often you eat, whether or not you eat breakfast, etc. can speed up or slow down your metabolism significantly. Also, I don't suppose the weight you've gained is muscle? Muscle weighs significantly more than fat - so I always care more about what the measuring tape says than what the scale says. Because you can be lighter, and still not look toned and be in healthy, good shape. A size 6 can weigh radically different depending on fitness levels. But if the measuring tape is creeping up on you, you should talk to your doctor? It's possible you have a vitamin or nutrient deficiency that's partially to blame, or other medical issues. On a side note, you don't sleep walk do you? My mother's cousin used to diet restrictively, and in the middle of the night, she would sleep walk downstairs to the fridge and make herself a huge peanut butter sandwich, eat it and go back to bed without waking up... but that's pretty rare. |

| Foods | any sprouters out there? | May 05 2009 19:58 (UTC) |
8 |
I sprout as well; you have to remember calories aren't the only factor towards weight loss. You need to make sure your body is getting all the nutrients it needs otherwise it will turn on its famine response and you won't lose weight, anything extra you eat your body will try to pack away... so keep that in mind. Sprouts are not exactly high on the caloric scale... so I wouldn't worry so much about being super accurate. A lot of places that sell seeds for sprouting (if you buy specific for sprouting seeds, which you always should because other seeds are often sprayed with pesticides and protective chemicals to keep them from rotting in the ground - buy organic seeds for sprouting whenever possible) will actually have nutritional information for the specific seeds on the label. It's best to do it this way if you are concerned about accuracy, because even different variations of the same seed can have differing nutritional information and numbers of calories. And you can always contact the brand manufacturer.
Hope that was in some way was helpful to you! Caroline

Hi there! My starting weight is 246... As I'm now starting it's also my current weight. My goal weight is 190 in six months. That's just about 3lbs a week. So I really have to get working hard. |

Hi there! I am new. If anyone is interested I'm really looking for someone to be an accountability partner for weight loss to encourage each other on a semi-daily basis... 1. Calorie Count Name (user id): caredennis Ok, so I might as well share a little about me. My husband and I both love food. We are great connoisseurs of cuisine. He is training to be a chef, so this obviously means we get to try a lot of things that aren't so great for us, but are scrumptious. I keep trying to lose weight, but falling back on it. I lead an incredibly busy lifestyle so it always seems as if we don't have time to exercise or prep from scratch... Argh! Ah well, this is why I'm here now. |

Can I lose weight by walking on the treadmill for 20 minutes twice a day?
