Weight Loss How did you get started? Did you jumpstart or use a program? Jul 15 2007

I think the best advice that I've learned is not to look at it like a diet, but rather a new, healthy lifestyle. I'm finding a passion in trying to become a health nut! I'm not totally there yet, but I enjoy visualizing myself as one. And of course, I still slip up sometimes, but that's life.

Good luck!

justxjess, I'm so glad to hear you're trying to get back to healthy and not just skinny. The only comment I have to make is don't look at the number on the scale - it trips just about every one up. You said yourself that you look better and more toned (flatter stomach!). Isn't that enough to convince you that who cares if you gained some more numbers on a scale - you actually look good now!! Keep it up!

Wow! You are very inspirational!! I know this might not be what you want to hear, but 10 lbs gained as opposed to 67 lost isn't a bad trade off!! But I do understand.  My suggestion is to go punch a punching bag and get out all your frustration, and then get back on track.  :)  You've done an amazing job it seems as if you've learned that nothing regarding a life-style change will ever be a 'quick fix'.

I also think it's awesome you stopped smoking!!  You go girl!!

Umm, I'm not the kind of person that likes to get involved in these kinds of threads, but I just stumbled accross a very interesting thread...

You and your husband must be on very shaky grounds since you're concerned that he only loves you for his looks.  Actually, I think HE's the one that ought to be concerned.  I just saw in another topic that you posted in where a new user (attractive male) was introducing himself to the forum and your response was:

Hey, honey. You got a girlfirend?

Sounds like you have some marital problems you need to work on yourself, forget the fact that your sister is not married.  I'd rather be happily single than unhappily wed.

Exercise motivation is sometimes simply will-power over comfort.  Every day I wake up and groan about getting out of a warm, comfortable bed and can make up dozens of excuses as to why I should sleep in, but my head is telling me "just do it." So as I groan I pull myself out of bed and get going, and always find later on in the day that I'm so happy I did.

I also find that it's easier to find motivation when I determine the night before that I'm going to go work out in the morning, rather than the "I'll just see how I feel in the morning" attitude.

Good luck!

Another option would be to Google "body fat calculator".  Your search should return a lot of results so you'll have quite a bit to choose from (I've used several different ones and they all seem to work about the same, so I don't necessarily have one that I would recommend over the others).  Take out your tape measure and enter your measurements into their formula.  The results are pretty accurate from what I can tell.

Oh, and the 2,403 calories are the calculation of how many calories you will burn in the remaining minutes (1,385) based on what level of activity you selected when setting up your profile. :)

The 1,385 minutes are the remaining minutes in the day that you have not accounted for.  Simple math would show you walked for 55 minutes (total of 1440 minutes in a day), leaving 1,385 minutes that you have not specifically accounted for.

Does that help?

Well, you could try it and let us know about your results.  I sort of did the same thing for a while - stopped counting calories and started guessing.  But I found I wasn't so good at it.  By the time I stepped back on the scale (thinking I'd be at the same weight) I was actually back to where I originally started. *groan*

I hope you have much more success than I did.  Please let us know!

I find some comfort in knowing I'm not the only one with Post-Christmas guilt.  :)  Mmarcin and elttiks... I'm right there with you on the chocolate.  *sigh*  But hey, one step back, two steps forward.

I found a really cool quote I want to share with you guys:

"Look at a stone cutter hammering away at his rock, perhaps a hundred times without as much as a crack showing in it.  Yet at the hundred-and-first blow it will split in two, and I know it was not the last blow that did it, but all that had gone before"  - Jacob August Riis

Hi! I'm kind of there... :)  I'm 23, 5'2" and currently 135.  I gained 22 pounds after six months of marriage and reached a high at 144 back in the spring and then realized my weight was on a downward scale - that's where I put my foot down.  :)  I lost 14 of those pounds, but put them back on in the summer.  I'm back on track now and feel great.

Running has worked wonders for me.  My exercise routine hasn't always been consistent, but when it is I see the pounds go much faster!!  Also, my vice used to be eating out, but I've gotten to the point where I only eat salads when eating out and that seems to help as well.  :)

Hang in there!!

Well... I wouldn't call it lucky, but I'm not going to have a huge problem here.  It's just my hubby and me this year - no family coming to visit.  :S  (I don't know whether to smile or to cry... lol)  I wanted to do a big breakfast for my husband, but because he's not really a breakfast type, I imagine it might be pretty quiet.  Our Christmas day plans?  Snowboarding all day... bring it on!  :)

I'm really sorry to hear about your friend.  My advice may not be the greatest, but it seems to me maybe she just needs some time and some space.  Sometimes you just have to let go and hope and pray that she'll come back.  It sounds as if you've done just about all you can to help her and she just doesn't want to be helped.  I'm sure it's hard for you to watch her hurt herself and her family.  Honestly, she needs to stop being selfish and start looking around at all the people who love her and need her and want to see her overcome this hurt!  But she can't do it alone - she needs friends like you, but if she won't allow you to help her your hands are tied.

I could be wrong.  Please don't get upset about what I said.  I'm so glad you were there when she was thinking about suicide.

Weight Loss Do you keep snacks at home? Dec 06 2006
17:33 (UTC)

In my opinion, I think you should keep snacks around that you enjoy and look forward to as long as you are able to control eating more than one (which it sounds like you do) and are also logging it into your daily calorie count.  I think this will give you something to see as a reward! And help you as you try to eat healthier.

If you're looking to replace those snacks you currently eat with something else then I personally love just plain fruit.  Or you could try a fruit smoothie with protein powder... although I know you mentioned tea and those two wouldn't really work well together.  :)

Weight Loss I have a huge problem with morning eating... Dec 04 2006
18:27 (UTC)
Seems to me, working out as hard as you do and just being active in general (regardless of workout) that you should be eating more than you do.  Try eating a larger dinner because you still have to make up for those calories you burn, and it sounds like you burn quite a lot!!!  It sounds like a vicious cycle - big breakfast because you're hungry, work out vigorously (makes you hungry), don't eat a big dinner - trying to compensate for large breakfast and causes you to be hungry in the morning.  At dinner, eat the calories you burned working out!
Weight Loss Newlyweds? Nov 21 2006

I gained 20 pounds after 6 months of marriage (10 on the honeymoon!!).  I think for me the biggest downfall is that I went from being extremely active in college - played soccer, volleyball, basketball and softball - to sitting at home in the evenings with my husband watching tv (I was married right out of college).  I was so shocked at how quickly the weight came!  It's almost as if I'm not the person I used to be.  I'm dealing with it by simply eating healthy foods.  I used to eat so much junk in college I don't know how I didn't gain weight (even with all the sports).  The biggest change is things quiet down a lot... or at least they did with me.  I now have a home to be at in the evenings so I don't go out with friends at night (not to mention I moved hundreds of miles from my hometown).  To get your husband to exercise with you... that's tough.  If he likes sports you could try learning to love the same sports he enjoys and do them together.  The best exercise for me is simply running.  I'm amazed at how refreshed I feel after a good run.

First off, you should be eating at least 1200 calories a day (that's if you have little to no activity - i.e. desk job, don't exercise, etc.).  So I would recommend you eat more... either foods slightly more dense in calories or just eating even if you're not hungry.  Most people on c-c will tell you the same thing.

Also, for fat grams and carb grams I would suggest you do a little research on the internet.  From what I've read, I try to keep my fat under 30g and my carbs around 200g.  Opinions on this may vary.

But the main thing is that you need to add some more calories to your diet to avoid the infamous "starvation" mode.

:) Good luck!!

Weekends are hard for me too.  My husband like to get up on Sat mornings and head straight to Dunkin Donuts.  :(  I always give in... but not this weekend (I'm determined).

I also have a really hard time getting my water requirements in on Saturday and Sunday.  I suppose it's because I'm afraid I'll be caught in the middle of something needing to find a bathroom where it's not exactly convenient.  I dunno.  :)  Still trying...

Karen,

Well first off, you don't want to damage your body, as you've already mentioned the question of whether or not it's starvation mode.  I'd start eating more right away.  With as much cardio as you do I would suggest you never eat less than 1400 cal but definitely compensate for what you're burning.

Second, you seem very apprehensive about weight gain.  May I also politely say that your weight is definitely in a healthy range as it is now.  Don't let an obsession of being too thin consume your life.  Be careful!  Honestly, I'm 5'2" and my goal weight is 120 which is more than some people my height.  Focus on HEALTHY not on SKINNY. :)

Best of luck to you.  :)
