Foods Protein sources? Apr 13 2006

Thanks Elin.  I did OK today with the calculations.  I love chicken, so that's a good source- and tuna.  I know cottage cheese has a lot of sodium, which I try to watch out for.  Thanks for the info though.  I like the egg white idea, too.

I make ice tea (I live in the south) and I experiment by mixing other tea bags with regular lipton ones(Green/raspberry, etc)  Sometimes it's GREAT!  I had a mango kind one time that was delicious!

Just try different combos! Celestial seasonings raspberry zinger is also really good!

Weight Loss I want to know - does anyone have a sluggish thyroid? Apr 13 2006

Hey,

Thyroid.  I suspect mine has been low for years.  I am now taking Cytomel and feel like a new normal person.  I read that it is one of the most underdiagnosed medical conditions.  I was literally sleeping 10 hours or more a day.  YIKES.  Now, I am sleeping just 7-8 and feel fine.  And less depressed.

SOME doctors will only go based on the test, but mine always showed in the low/normal range.  My doctor LOOKED at me (like they need to do) and noticed a swollen thyroid and like I looked bad- which I did.  He said sometimes the low range  means the thyroid isn't working well enough.  THANK Goodness he put me on this medicine.  It has been 5 weeks and I am feeling like my old self.  I suspect I have  been suffering with this for years.

Good luck and find a doctor who will look at you and listen to your complaints!

Sharon

PS- no real weight loss from the meds yet..so I suspect I needed them just to get my system going again.
Weight Loss Am I losing too fast? Apr 12 2006

I can understand Betty Jean.  ME EITHER!  I am So stressed.  i have been working out and eating well for a month- and NOTHING!  I am very discouraged.  But, I am re-evaluating my eating plan and trying to log my food and pay attention to the fats/carbs and proteins and I am hoping that helps.  I think I have been eating too much fat and not enough other stuff.

Good luck!

Hey FineW.  Thanks and that's inspirational.  Of COURSE, I know that men lose weight easier, but I think this is going to do the trick.  I saw today that I had WAY too much fat intake, so tomorrow, I will slack off .  More protein, less fat.  Maybe that has been my problem. I just hope I don't starve! 1400 doesn't seem like much for a guy, but if you aren't starving, I guess you are doing fine. I think 64 pounds in three months is a lot .  20 plus a month.  Don't they recommend to do it more slowly? (NOT said to be discouraging- just concerned!)  Of course, you are still young and your body can take more abuse!    I personally would love to lose 64 pounds in 3 months, but I would pass out from hunger!

My 18 year old sister had an easier time.  After 30, it's SO true what they say (it's harder).  Better to do it now..and you are SO on the right track! You'll be fighting off the women in no time..I guarantee it.

Thanks for the info.  THe more educated I am, the better.  Sharon

I think I understand better.  IS the tag so that you don't have to keep searching and adding things that you use or do often? That is the only thing that makes sense to me.

THanks SO much for your help.  I think I am going to try this and see if it works.  Another question..do you feel full enough during the day when you are doing this plan?

OK, NOW I get it.  A little better anyway.  I didn't realize there was an analysis tool, so I am much less confused now.  It should be easier to figure out now.

BTW, do you plan meals in advance so you can search for them and do the analysis beforehand?

Also, what is the TAG thing for?  I don't understand it.  There are a few things about this site that are confusing.

I am also not sure how to go about the counting.  Do I look at the total calorie count (say on the Frozen food box) and then look at fat grams, carbs, etc?  Does that all count as part of the daily intake and I try not to go over both calories and gram totals?

This is SO confusing to me! Can you use some examples of meals maybe?

What analysis am I looking at? You mean daily foods I am consuming?  And what pie chart?  I am a bit confused about the last paragraph.  And I don't get the gram stuff.  Sorry am a bit slow on the uptake.  This is all SO new for me!

How do I make sense of how much carbs/fat and protein I should be eating?  I just don't want to make this TOO complicated, but I think I definitely need a more structured system.  WHat I am doing now is not working well.

I get that I should eat 1700 calories a day to lose weight..right?  So if I work out for 50 minutes like normal and it burns 500 calories, does that mean I need to eat 2200 again?

For example, if I can eat 1400 calories a day to lose 1.5 pounds a week, can I exercise for x amount of minutes and add amount to equal the calories I need to eat?

By that I mean, say I eat my 1400 calories, then I work out and burn 500.  SHOULD I eat 500 calories, so I don't eat too little calories for the day? I don't want to starve myself.  Plus, I get SO grouchy when I am hungry!

Hey, thanks for the advice.  I looked at the counter, but it doesn't have Elliptical Runner !!  ACK!  Any other ideas for calculating it? As far as calories, I have no clue.  I am confused by all of this.  How much it takes to maintain my current weight (which I don't want to do!) how to add in my activity and lose the weight?  Any easy explanation on how to do that?  I am off to a  good start with the exercise, (I think), but I don't know what to do about calories and how to break down the protein/carbs, etc for what to eat during the day!

Oh- and I feel like I could drive my car and burn 300 calories in 52 minutes.  Do you think my machine is wrong?  i loathe the idea of having to kill myself working out for more than an HOUR!  And, I am not eating that much either.  I know it, because my stomach growls a LOT.  What am I doing wrong?  HELP!

Finewine, you crack me up!  Not to mention that your e-mails are insightful.  I re-read what you posted about my elliptical runner complaint.  I am SO pissed, because I worked out 51 minutes yesterday (like a DOG, I might add) and it said 300 calories burned.  Let me just point out that I am NOT a small girl.  I have been steadily doing that- and see few results after almost 4 weeks.  I haven't been counting calories though- just trying to eat better and watch what crap goes in my mouth.  I really only eat about one real meal a day and the rest are just oatmeal or salad. Obviously that isn't working.  Any idea how to get a better grip on things?  I feel SO discouraged.  My boyfriend hid the scales because he was tired of the drama.  I just feel so incredibly frustrated.

BTW, I promise that it gets easier if you can stay at it for about three weeks.  I think that's about how long it takes for something to become a habit.  THe exercise part is HARD for the first week, but if you can hang in there past that- it WILL get easier.  I  PROMISE!  And I am the queen of lazy, so if I can do it, you can!  really!

I THINK it is herbal.  Not sure though, but you could check.  I got mine at a health food store, but I'm not sure.  I got some of the pills..that may be different.  Is it?  I feel like it works, because they make me pee all the time!  I figure that has to be helping! ha!

Hi Utah,

You should be able to drink Decaf Green tea- which they make.  Isn't it the caffeine that keeps you from drinking it?  Sharon

Look at it this way- the time is going to pass anyway..and just tell yourself that yesterday was the LAST day you were going to gain ONE more ounce.  Only downwards from this point on!  It does give you a different mindset.  And if you want your body to change- Exercise works wonders.  I didn't think it would when I started- just three weeks ago and I cried for days, but I am seeing a difference now- and it is SO cool!

Hey guys,  I also think this forum is going to be SO helpful and ya'll sound like a great bunch of people.  I have about 70 pounds to lose- and I am trying hard to think of it as one pound at a time.  My mom lost 40 and swears it's the only way to do it.  One pound, one day at a time.  If you break it into small pieces, it's easier.  AND, the first few weeks are the hardest.  If you can get past those, it gets easier.  Once you see results, it helps with the willpower!

Weight Loss goal pant size! Apr 03 2006

Hey, I'm 201, size 14/16.  I also want to say that I am SO sad to see the women on here who are size 8/10's and wanting to be 2's or even zero's!  Please, women/girls, be happy if you are healthy and in the right weight range.  Don't buy society's myth that you have to be a stick to be happy.  It's not true.  I read somewhere that it is best to forget the scale for the most part and concentrate on being HEALTHY!  Working out, eating right.  You will find your "right" body size if you do that.  After years of my thyorid not working right and finally getting medication, I am trying HARD to follow that advice.  It's not easy, but it's easier since my boyfriend hid the scales!

I worry so much about the mental health and self esteem of today's young women/teenagers. Skinny does NOT equate to happiness..and especially if it involves an eating disorder.  I have seen the effects of those and they are horrible. Just first be happy with who you are- eat well, exercise in some way everyday- and don't let anyone tell you you aren't beautiful just the way you are.

Just venting and thanks for listening!  Sharon
