Young Calorie Counters Should I decrease my calories for big parties and holidays? Nov 28 2009

Since you're only 14 (same as me) you shouldn't eat less than 1500 a day or it will affect your growth (or something like that). Maybe try doing more exercise rather than eating less? How fast are you trying to lose weight? I'm about the same weight as you and a bit shorter and I can lose almost 1lb a week on 1600 with about 45mins-1hr exercise a day

Wow~Really? I do 20 mins of fast running on the treadmill plus about 30 minutes of cardio,  pilates, weight loss yoga. Do you think after a few weeks I'll get used to 1500 calories and start losing?

Maybe I'll buy cottage cheese when my family goes food shopping. How would the amount of calories not make a difference? I haven't been able to cut pudding out- maybe after exams, I like to look forward to the pudding. Plus, I don't have a lot of veggies at home, but I'll ask for some.

Coming from someone going through the final stages of recovery from an ED, do NOT eat 1300 or even 1500 calories! Seriously, 1800 is the minimum and the weird thing is that you can maintain just as well on that as you can 1300 or 1500! You will probably gain weight at first, but it will come off because that's just food and water weight, and your metabolism will kick in (promise!) I messed up my metabolism soo badly, but thankfully the damage isn't permanent. You'll be happier and have more freedom.

You should also know that you're current weight is awesome. :) Maybe you have a "big" stomach and maybe you don't. Cutting down on sodium will help a lot. That means not a lot of processed foods, salt-free seasonings instead of added salt, etc. It helps my self-esteem a ton as I'm trying to gain weight. Also drink a lot of water to avoid bloating.

Walking/running won't help as much as you think it will. Try lifting light weights, keep with the sit-ups, try squats maybe and other things to tone your muscles. You don't need to lose weight at all, but by building muscle you'll look thinner at the same weight. Also you can eat more because muscle burns more calories than fat. Make sure you get enough complete protein to build muscle.

Changing your food will also help. (Never restrict things from yourself but if 100-calorie packs and such is an everyday thing, you could probably do better than that.) Fat actually makes your skin glow and your hair shine. You need a balance of fats, carbs, and protein in each meal. A better breakfast might be a cup of 2% cottage cheese with fresh fruit and either a piece of whole wheat toast or dry cereal with the yogurt, or one whole egg with a piece of toast, fruit and a cup of 1% or 2% milk. A good snack might be celery and peanut butter, carrots and hummus, or yogurt (live cultures and less added sugar is more important than fat free). Eating good food will also help your depression. :)

Thanks:) But I'm still really nervous to go up to 1800 calories. I love your breakfast ideas and I think I'll try the fruit and cottage chees eone tomorrow...well, I don't have cottage cheese. Is ricotta cheese okay?

And I was thinking of taking those 60-calorie jell-o puddings out from my lunch( i eat an apple and cereal with it also) and trading it for veggies. It will be really hard because I looove chocolate but I don't eat any veggies unless I have them at dinner which is not usual. Plus my Dad brings home bread a lot(not the healthy kind-french and italian breads) and I'm thinking if I have veggies instead of the pudding it might even out my nutrients. I'm trying to cut out sodium-bread ruins me though! I'm staRTING WITH limiting myself to 2 slices when it's my favorite type. I'm also trying to dirnk more water- 5 glasses a dya at least, no questons. will that make my stomach flatter?  Also, do you know where a lot of sodium comes from? I know pasta and bread(that aren't whole-wheat) but what else? Is ranch salad dressing okay or should I use a differen type? whart about chicken and rice? Do they have a lot of sodium?

Sorry for all the questions and thanks so much! and I'm proud of you for trying to be healthy!!!

Mabnill: Yeah. I only have a treat for dessert. Ranging from 100-200 calories every night. and I usually have 60-calorie sugar-free puddings for lunch along with an apple and cereal. I've been thinking I should change those puddings to vegetables. Are the puddings unhealthy?

You're really nice and explain things really well and in a nice way-unlike many people here who jsut yell at me for my thoughts.

I will eat 1500 and tr ynot to fell guilty. I will try to want to eat healthy, not just less but I'm having trouble going over 1500 so I'm going to stay ther enow.

I kind of wish my mom would notice that I have ED thoughts( is it just thoughts or a real ED) so I could go talk to someone. but she won't and we don't have the money right now.

I think you'll be a great nutritionist or therapist-type person!

I had no idea who that is, so I googled her.

OH MY GOD! Now that's what I call a classic feminine beauty! I'm  totally with you here, hot damn...

I'm more influenced by my boyfriend's reaction to women than the women themselves. I used to have absolutely no problem looking at and even admiring pretty women, and I enjoyed looking at a beautiful person. When my boyfriend is being estatic about his favorite girls (keira Knightly, Emma Watson and Jessica Alba, typically) I feel totally unattractive. When I found his Playboy and Passie (nastier version of Playboy) stashes, I signed up on CC.

I'm not an expert on boyfirends, but you should sign up for CC if you have a real reason for feeling heavy. Not if your boyfriend makes you feel uncomfortable. Tell him to get rid of his porn.

Oh my...it sounds like you are really beating yourself up emotionally!  You need to stop that immediately because you cannot change the past and berating yourself over it makes it harder to move forward.  Take it one day at a time and choose a positive attitude for today (I find it much easier to do that on a daily basis than forever).

I was struggling with dinners a couple of months ago.  Determining the nutritional information for home-cooked meals can be tedious and I didn't want to invest the time. To make it easier on myself, I purchased a cookbook that provides the serving size and nutritional information for each dish and includes recipes that are quick and easy to prepare. I also no longer print recipes off the internet unless they provide the same information. Since making these changes, the weight has really started coming off.

Sometimes in the evening when I am craving sweets, I dring a diet orange soda - it's only 25 calories but it's sweet enough to satisfy my craving for sugar. Crappy foods tend to make me feel tired too, so try to make sure your carbs are more complex and maybe try to add a little protein to your diet if you're not getting enough.

Good luck and I hope you get back on track soon!

I try but I don't make the dinner sin my house. I would if I had a choice!

It's okay to have a period of slightly higher eating because in long run it's just drops in the bucket. You will continue on your maintenance/weight loss plan and everything will be fine. Also 1000 - 1300 calories is too little for you. It's true. So don't argue. Also, please stop working yourself into a frantic state, or at least stop posting the frantic ravings where everyone on this forum can read them.

(I totally thought someone on this forum had gotten on Biggest Loser from the title.)

Gee thanks...

I'm recovering from anorexia and Halloween will be the perfect opportunity for me to confront the treats I have denied myself for so long for fear of high calorie counts and empty nutrition. This year, I want to attend parties and feel normal in indulging in the seasonal delights instead of restricting myself to diet drinks and sliced vegetables. So this Halloween, I don't plan on lowering my daily intake, but rather keep myself on my regular steady weight gain diet while allowing the holiday's sweeties to become enjoyable extras!

That's awesome! You've obviously come a far way! enjoy yourself!

Hey, guys. How many calories do you eat, how much exercise do you do( 30 mins, 1 hourm how many days a week?)

I eat 1500 and do an hour everyday except I usually only do 30 mins 1 day a week. I'm nervous- I want to be 120 by November 28th- should I eat 1400? How much do the rest of you eat?

How many times do you have to be told? This must be about the 20th time you have asked and been told the same thing: 1500 is the minimum weight loss amount for sedentary teens. You are obviously not sedentary, therefore should be eating more.

I don't know why you ask how many calories other people are eating; it's totally irrelevant to you because other people have different needs. I also don't know why you ask if you should be eating 1400 when you've been told so many times on different threads what you should be doing.

Well 1500 calories makes me feel fat and I haven't been losing weight on it!

Right now I'm eating around 1500-1700 a day. I work out probably 20-30 minutes a day, 4-5 days a week. It may not sound like much, but it's Jillian Michaels' 30 Day Shred. It's really kicking my butt.

I just did the Shred literally 10 minutes ago. I'm so beat. When I can finally move again, I'll make myself dinner which will bring my total for the day to about 1750.

It's important to eat enough. You may find that you'll actually lose more if you eat more. I can't say if you'll make it to your goal by November 28th, but if you eat sensibly and work out and maintain a deficit of no more than 1000 calories, you'll definitely look and feel better by then.

Do you think I'll reach 120 by December 4th? Because until I'm in the lower 120s, I don't feel good. Seriously, everyday I wear huge jeans and t-shirts.

I'm about 125-130lbs. I work out for at least 1-2 hours 5 or 6 days a week (high school xc, track, and basketball) and eat about 2700 calories during the week and 3200 on the weekends.

I'm sure I will not be the only one to say this, but do not eat below 1500 a day. That is the bare minimum for teens and trust me, I went through an ED eating that much a day. With the amount I eat now, I have no idea how I did it. Our growing bodies need nourishment so make sure you listen to its needs! :)

You had an eating disorder eating 1500 calories? Or like 1300? I used to eat that.

kashi(the pink/red box)- the lowest calorie is 1 serving(1 cup)=140 and 1.2 cup of fat free milk=40= 180. Great, huh! corn flakes also only have 110. But Kashi gives you a lot more for 1 cup ans is really filling and packed with protein and fiber. I eat for lunch with and apple and I'm good!

I too am curious if any girls have lost weight on this amount. I know it's unhealthy to eat less, but when I eat 1500 I maintain. I have to eat 1400 and a lot of busting my butt to loose anything. Maybe my metabolism is shot to hell then. But have any girls here lost weight on that amount?

My metabolism was damaged badly due to disordered eating for 5 years. But so far, my weight actually went down from 59kg to 58kg and it stayed there after increasing my calorie intake from 400-700 calories a day to the current 1,500-1,900 a day. Mind you, I try to only eat the 'good stuff' and avoid junk and I exercise for an hour a day. I was determined to change my lifestyle a month ago.

My weight went from 58kg to 61kg to 59kg to 58kg in this 3 weeks. Talk about weight flunctuations... But so far, it looks as if my metabolism is getting on better now compared to a month ago. I have hunger pangs that I never experienced for so long, and I do believe that I keep up with this good work and try to eat more and exercise enough, I will hopefully strike a balanced weight for my body. (I'm 5'7")

So.. yeah, I think you can definitely lose weight with 1,500 calories but you must give yourself time and put in the effort to eat better each day. My personal goal is to be able to eat 2,000 calories a day and exercise an hour a day and get down to 120-125 lbs healthily - I'll give myself no deadline but every day is a progress. Good luck and keep faith.

Thank you-that really encourages me! Good luck and good job!

so, when I hit my first plateau I should lower carbs and increase protein? Like what % carbs and protein?

Ok I'm a mom of a pre-teen and we butt heads all the time (we are the exactly the same stubborn person) So please try talking to her, like a girls day, would be a good time,  If you can go get your nails done together, have lunch, then talk.

I found this post from you.

  • Height: 5'5
  • Age:13
  • Start Weight: 135 on CC
  • Current Weight: 123
  • Goal Weight: 105- New Year's would be great but I'm not pushing it.

Your ideal weight is 113-138.  You are at a perfect weight right now.  105lbs is too low.  I'm 5'2" and it's to low for me.

I suggest you stand in front of the mirror and really look at yourself.  look for the good.  Honey you are beautiful HOW YOU ARE.

Treadmills have speed control set it at 3.5 mph and walk.  Just because it can go fast doesn't mean you HAVE to.

If you can pay for a membership why not go to the local walmart and buy some "girly" hand weights.   I suggest "The firm" set it comes with 1lb grips and "heads" that twist on for up tp 5lbs. It has a DVD too.  It's only $35.(target) here's the firm's site.  Also Yoga is a good workout that will give you lean musclesand smooth everything. So will Pilates.

I hate to say it but maybe your mom thinks you are too skinny and/or obsessing.  She may think you are develping an ED.

thank you for the advice. I am trying to find some good teen's workouts. And she doesn't notice if I'm eating less; she's never home.

Are you restricting food as a way to get her attention?

1800 could lead to a slow and steady weight loss depending on how vigorous your activity level is...i would suspect that you could lose at least 1 pound per week with an intake of 1800 since you are so young and exercise for about an hour daily. try it for a few weeks to see how you do and make adjustments accordingly but give it at least 2-3 weeks before making modifications.

I try for an hour but sometimes it's only between 30-40 minutes.
