Weight Loss Why is healthy eating so expensive? Nov 10 2009

Whatever extra I spend for healthy food (not all that much since I buy 80% of my groceries at Aldi and almost all the rest at Trader Joe's) is far outweighed by the $250 per month that I'm NOT spending on Lipitor and Fenoglide. And my lipids are lower now than they ever were when I was eating the junk and gorging daily on the prescription meds.

My total cholesterol has dropped from 263 to 165, my triglycerides from 420 to 85, my fasting blood sugar from 108 to 95 - all without prescription meds.

"According to the charts, I could lose another 40 pounds and not be underweight. I don't plan to do that, because that would be too thin for me, but I do plan on getting to and maintaining what is a healthy weight for me, and I'll still have 20 pounds of extra padding."

Here's mine, 6 days a week.

1 cup cereal - alternate between Kashi GoLean and Trader Joe's Hi Fiber - 130 cals

On the cereal, banana (100) and 1/2 c skim milk (40)

half grapefruit - 50

8 oz Aldi's tomato juice - 45

1/2 cup Trader Joe's organic nonfat French vanilla yogurt - 90

1/2 cup blueberries (on the yogurt), fresh when I can get them, frozen otherwise - 40

Total 495 calories, high nutrient (fiber/protein/vitamins/calcium), low fat, low carb, awesomely delicious, and keeps me feeling full until lunchtime.

I was about 500 calories over on my goal for the week - a couple of bad decisions - so last night I went out and walked 5 miles. Back to where I needed to be, calorie-wise, and as a bonus, I slept great too!

Foods Your "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" Food! Sep 01 2009

We all have them - what's your's?

I'll start: I stopped at McDonald's yesterday for a small parfait (as I had run out of greek yogurt and was craving one), and as I was perusing their menu I saw my familiar "therapy" food: M&M McFlurry. Now, I am a pretty health-minded individual, but every time I come home from my boyfriend's house - we're long distance, so I see him for about a week every 2 or 3 months - I stop and eat my sadness away with one of these shakes. I don't care how much I've eaten that particular day, and I don't care how many calories are in them. Granted, I can guess just fine at the calories, but knowing them would just ruin it for me. So instead, I keep myself in the dark on purpose.

Do you have a food like this? One where you know it's probably horrible for you, but you refuse to ask or look at the info, just so you can fully enjoy it?

Nope. How could I "fully enjoy" anything I know is "probably horrible" for me. I concentrate on all the wonderful, delicious, healthy foods I CAN have and don't think about the crap I SHOULDN'T have.

I do admit, when I drive by a Burger King and see the sign advertising their two-Whoppers-for-the-price-of-one special, I get a momentary twinge- but I haven't given into that twinge in nine months. Something like I get once in a great while when I see someone light up and take a deep drag off a cigarette - and I haven't given into that twinge in over 32 years.

For lunch every Monday, my wife and I each have a bowl of homemade minestrone soup - this time of year, made from fresh tomatoes, onions, zucchini, and kidney beans right out of the garden - our daily glass of red wine,  an ounce of Asiago cheese, and a hunk of fresh-baked bread. 550 of the most delicious calories on the planet.

Weight Loss When to log weight? Aug 30 2009

Here's what works for me. I log weekly. But I weigh myself four times, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, and then log the lowest of those as my weekly weight. That way I reduce the effect of temporary water gains, etc.

Change your mindset. Focus not on what you cannot have, but rather on all the good things you can have that will also contribute to living healthy.

Today I was in a situation where I had to eat in a school cafeteria. For entrees, I had the choice of pepper steak with fried potatoes or a grilled vegetable medley in a wrap. I spent no time lamenting that I could not have the steak and taters, but rather thought about how good that veggie wrap was going to taste with a splash of salsa. It exceeded my expectations, and I figure I saved 300 or more calories and a whole lot of saturated fat.

"Regular" bread can vary a lot in calories. I recently looked through all the prepackaged bread choices at Trader Joe's. Calories varied from 60 to 110 a slice. I chose the lowest calorie alternative, 7 grain sprouted wheat, and it's quite good, especially toasted, even without a spread (though even better with a quarter T of butter).

> I don't expect to live my life and never step foot in another fast food place ever again? That would be unrealistic.

Why? I'm old enough to remember a time before there was fast food. Nobody starved.

If you absolutely must - you can get a veggie special at Subway for about 3.00 USD.

Yesterday a man I know approached me and asked me, "I've been meaning to ask you - you're not sick or anything, are you?" I was happy to tell him, and he was happy to hear, that no, the 66 pounds I've lost were all intentional.

Trader Joe's High Fiber Cereal. Check out the nutrients in the Food Browser (but be aware that the serving size on the actual label is 2/3 cup; the CC label mistates this as 2 cup).

Being told I was pre-diabetic and realizing that unless I got my blood sugar under control, I could expect the hell my father went through for the rest of his life after he was diagnosed with Type II. I'm now at 256, down from 311 right after Thanksgiving, headed for an ideal weight of 203, through a very satisfying 1950-calorie diet and three- or four-a-week workouts. As side benefits, the blood lipids are down; I can walk up the stairs without stopping halfway to rest; and I'm trying new foods and enjoying them more.
