Pregnancy & Parenting End of school day fits and fights... Sep 11 2009

"Sounds like this can be fueled by fatigue or hunger. I suggest a healthy snack that she can eat on the walk home."

This is a great idea!   All day school is a lot for these little ones,  my kids act the same.  I would suggest that she is exhausted and hungry.   The snack will get her blood sugar up and keep her too busy to fight.

Pregnancy & Parenting When should i have a baby? Aug 15 2009

Absolutely complete all of your education before having kids.   Trying to balance children and med school will be extremely difficult.  I have 3 kids, and I am so glad I did all of my schooling first.  There is no way I could go to school now; the children consume my whole day (in a good way) and the nights too.  Sure, you could do daycare, but it is difficult to find a good place, very expensive, you will worry about the kids when they are there, you might feel guilty that the daycare lady is experiencing all of their milestones and daycare is not 24 hours a day. Kids require around the clock attention.  I can see med school getting pushed to the backburner and you do not want to risk resenting your children.

29-30 is not old.  Most people I know had their first children around 33 or 34.  If you finish med school you will have your career and won't worry about how you will support your children.

You are a runner! And don't let anyone make you think otherwise!

Also, I think the 'running snob' may not know as much as you think he does, so don't be intimidated!  An experienced runner would never, ever, use the word 'jog'.  We call jogging 'the J word';  it's what people did in the 70's while wearing velour track suits.   Smile

You have made a very difficult decision and I wish you all the best.  There are many women who can walk in your shoes.

As for finances.  Don't forget that you already have a lot of what you'll need; crib, stroller, car seat, clothes, etc.  and don't forget that babies dont need much!  It's society that tries to make us think that babies need all the latest gadgets.  The only thing that a baby wants is to loved, that's it.

Take it day to day.  You and your family will be just fine.

Not trying to be rude but just wondering....... why would anyone wear a pad doing anything?  Especially working out.     Ditto on the tampon and pantyliner.

Put 1/2 cup oats and 1 cup of water in bowl.  Microwave for two minutes on high, stir in 1/2 cup blueberries or strawberries then microwave on medium for about 30 seconds.

Splash on some almond milk and a little stevia.

Devine!!

I add about 1/4 cup of unsweetened vanilla Almond Breeze.  Gives it a creaminess that milk doesn't and a nice vanilla flavour.

Motivation At goal weight but skinny fat Jun 29 2009

Original Post by qmwillcand:

I had a thought...

could it be impossible to have a flat belly based on having kids? I've had 3 and didn't gain more than 30lbs with each, but maybe it's simply not possible for me. Not sure...

Yes.  Lay on your back.  Lift your legs about 6 inches off the floor (so your abs are contracted). Put your forefinger and middle finger about 1 inch below your belly button and push into your abs.  Can you feel a gap between your abs?  If so, your abs did not come back together after your pregnancies.    This is really common, but some women have it worse than others.

Rather than being 'skinny fat' maybe your abs are just sagging forward and what you think is flab is really just stretched out skin from the pregnancies.

This is exactly what happened to me.  I was very fit and well within a healthy BMI, but I had a pot belly and handfuls of skin and got bloated really easily.  By night time, I looked 4-5 months pregnant!   I had a two inch separation between my abs and ended up having abdominoplasty (AKA  a tummy tuck) last year.  Now, my stomach is flat as a board and my abs are strong and look awesome.  The surgeon only removed half a pound;  and the half pound was all skin, very little fat.  It was almost entirely a muscle repair.  if you want more info, check out a website called  "Make Me Heal" I learned a lot from there.

Sorry to sound curt, but you really need to listen to what your body is telling you, because it is telling you what the BABY needs and right now it's telling you to EAT.   Your baby is undergoing massive mental and physical growth right now and the only thing it gets to fuel this growth is what is being produced by your body!

Your baby is only 4 months old!  If you eat healthy and stay active, the baby weight will come off, but it will take time!   It's hard to enjoy your little one when your stressing over baby weight.

P.S.  I think that your body will hold onto weight when your nursing.  It goes back to the caveman days when we had to have enough fat stored so we could make milk in case of a famine.

Very motiviating and inspiring article.  Really reinforced that I have to put the time into developing a weight training program.  Cardio is good, but it can only take you so far.  Thanks for sharing!

Pregnancy & Parenting Another potty training question...... Jun 21 2009

Have you tried this:  after she goes in her diaper,  take her and the diaper to the toliet, empty the poop into the toliet and say "ok, this is where poop goes,  poop goes in the toliet"  do a little bum wipe, throw the toliet paper in and let her flush.  Then say "good girl, you put poop in the toliet,  bye bye poop".  Then tell her what a good girl she is for putting her poop in the toliet, lots of praise, clap and give her a treat for putting her poop in the toliet (we used M&M's).   After a week or so of this, I just tried to catch them right before they pooped in their pull up.  When I saw them trying to have a poop, I hustled them off to the toliet, saying "OK, let's put our poop in the toliet now"  "where does poop go?" "you're such a big girl, putting your poop in the toliet" "you get some M&M's if you put your poop in the toliet"  etc.   Eventually, they made the transition.  It took a couple of weeks.  Good luck.

Pregnancy & Parenting How do you know if and when you are going to develop stretch marks Jun 21 2009

I know this is a worry, but try not to stress too much.  Stretch marks are determined by genetics.  I researched this a lot when I was pregnant and there's not much you can do, it all depends on how much elastin your skin has.   So you are just going to have to wait and see.   Whether or not your Mom has any could be a good indicator of what will happen to you.

Congratulations on being at 35 weeks,  you must be getting excited.

Congrats, that is something to be proud of.  That's an awesome mindshift!   I hope to be there someday.  I'm still at the point where I would have been thinking about the other half all day, until I finally gave in and ate it (and then I would have been releived that it was gone so I could stop thinking about it).

I just had the same experience.  I got the kids dilly bars from Dairy Queen for a treat and decided to have it too.  I even saved it to eat after they went to bed so I could eat it slowly and really savour it.  I was surprised & totally dissapointed that the ice cream tasted like absolutely nothing; it had no favour at all and the chocolate on the outside was like wax.  Later, I was so annoyed that I wasted my calories on it when i could have had a huge bowl of yogurt and strawberries instead.

I also find deli meat completely disgusting now.  Just tastes like salty yuck.

Motivation anyone run everyday?? then help me pls.. Jun 07 2009

I listen to an FM radio rather than an MP3 player.   I flip between 6 or so stations so I'm always hearing new songs.    You can also get a handheld Sirus radio.... lots of great variety, talk shows, etc.

Change up your route. Sometimes I drive to my starting point or just run from my house.

Join a running club or a running clinic and run with other people.  Great for motivation (you've made the "appointment") meet some new people and the time flies by.

Try to daydream.  Sounds weird, I know.  I run long distances and people always ask me what I think about for the 2 - 3 hours, and I always say, "I solve the world's problems!"    Wink

Hope that helps!  I know what you mean when you say that running clears your mind.  That's one of the things that I love about running too.
