I don't think this is a big deal. I eat starchy carbs., bread, rice, pasta.. I love it all. I LOVE vegies, and eat them with every meal, I just won't be eating the starchy (or sugary) carbs at night. By night I mean after 7. I am maintaining my calorie amount at 1400, and my burn rate is still about 2100. I don't know why I stopped losing weight and started gaining weight, but I did. This is just something I am going to try so that I can see if it works. I was put off. I didn't like being called "dear". I had typed a whole response yesterday and then after submitting it, deleted the whole thing. I was angry that I was being belittled, but I have to realize that everyone is going to have different opinions on this since the literature out there is very conflicting when it comes to diet and nutirition. |

Thank you downdeep. I appreciate the clarification. Like I said, I am not cutting carbs, just eating the carbs during the day, and minimizing the ones that I eat at night. I did this yesterday and it seemed to come out the same calorie wise. I know the importance of eating right, eating well and eating enough. I don't think that my trainer is stupid or any of the other names she was called here. Like I said, there is no harm in trying this to see if it works. I know what hasn't worked. What I have been doing. Even though there has been a deficit, I have gained body fat and while my weight has fluctuated, it has not gone down. With a 500-600 calorie deficit each day, this bafles me. I don't see the harm in shuffeling my carbs around. Thank you. |

I always forget how many people are here that are just plain mean. I aplogize for getting my terms all screwed up. I am obviously NOT a nutritionist. I was sharing the information that I got. Why? Because I thought it might be nice to get some information out there. Why is nutrition so messed up. I could find articles about the evils of carbs and find JUST as many that sing carbs praises. Where do we get REAL education? How do we REALLY know what to do? I went to a friend, nurse and dietition. This is an ON-LINE forum. People LIE online. I don't know what your qualifications are. I only know what you tell me, but I can go into my friends office and SEE her degrees hanging on her wall. I can talk to her, and rather than make me feel like a ****, she is patient, kind, and explains to me what I wanted to know. I am NOT going to be firing my trainer. I DO know that what I have been doing is NOT working. I DO know that my clothes are not fitting the way that they were. I haven't gained a lot of weight. (1 pound.) I DO know that I can see (this could be in my head) mor fat on my body. I DO know that I have been eating 1400 to 1500 calories on days that I work out (6 days a week.) I DO know that I haven't lost an ounce of weight. The only thing I DON'T know is why. I am going to try what she says and eat the bulk of the carbs that I do eat in the day time, and minimize them at night. I am NOT cutting them out. I am 30 and I work out 6 days a week. I know that I need carbs. I just don't think that I need to eat bread at night. I am going to give this a shot and see how it works. If it does work, GREAT. If not, I will try something else. I am consuming the SAME amount of calories. I am consuming the SAME amount of carbs, just changing the times that I DO consume them. I REALLY don't see the harm in that. |

Standontop... thank you. I ONLY eat wild rice. I really don't like white rice at all. My boyfriend calls me a health nut. I make all the healthy choices that I can. For example today I had Breakfast (My nemisis) 1 Luna bar 180 cal Lunch Egg white omlette with spinich feta cheese, mushroom and tomato. 1 english muffin dry Snack 1 luna bar I found that I need a snack in the afternoon about an hour before the gym or I lose energy. For dinner I am planning a big salad, with cheese and vegies, chicken breast (5 oz) and a snack after that, but I don't know what yet, because my calories will only be at like 1100 and I need about 1400... Maybe some... nuts or something.
I eat pretty well. I always have. In fact I have been eating healthy for so long, I prefer it to eating fast food. Fast food typically makes me ill.

Thank you all.. This is the most response I have ever gotten from a question here, and I have been on calorie count for the last 6 years. (wow.. I can't believe it has been that long, it sure was easier to lose weight when I was 24!) I spoke to a nurse who also has a degree in nutrition. She kinda said the oppisite of some of you, but I am gonna share anyway. She said that as we get older, carbs at night are the enemy. Complex carbs that is. The reason is, Complex carbs turn to sugar to be burned off, but then you go to bed so instead of it all getting burned, a small amount gets burned, (you burn calories sleeping) and the rest goes from CC to sugar to fat. That is why I have noticed an increase of fat around my midsection. Her advice is NOT for me to cut out carbs, because I do work out so much I DO need them. Her advice was to cut them down at night. (good by fat free frozen yogurt.. I will miss you!) She said that I need to eat the majority (2/3) of my carbs BEFORE I go to the gym. She also said that people eat WAY more carbs than they think they do. She says, at night I need to eat no more bread. I need to stick with protein (for my muscles) and Simple carbs like veggies. This way the small amount of carbs that I am eating (in the veggies) are being used (when I sleep) and there is not a bundle that is not being utilized. Most importantly, she said that EVERY BODY IS DIFFRENT. Your body may utilize complex carbs diffrent than mine. But lucky me, I log what I eat every day and she took a look at my account. The only reason that she can see that I was gaining fat (as much as I work out) is the bread that I eat at night. She told me to try this and check back in a month and a half. She is confient that this is the ticket, but if I am still not losing weight, I may have to go see my doctor. I have a deficit calorie wise, and if this isn't it, I may have a thyroid problem (I don't think that is likely since I get a blood test every year and that came back fine.) Thank you to everyone that posted. I'll let you know if this works, eating most carbs during the day and fewer at night. Be advised this is not a low carb diet. This is me shuffling around my complex carbs to something that is better for my body. |

I can do squats, not lunges. For some reason the stairs don't bother my knee. What I mean by leg lifts is when you go up the step you lift the oppisite leg behind you as high as you can. Just gives an additional burn and tightening. the backs of my legs are a trouble area for me. |

What is a macro %?
On cardio days I do 30 to 40 minutes on the elliptical, and 20 to 30 minutes on the stair stepper, the one with real stairs doing leg lifts... |

I lift weights 2-3 times a week. I switch off upper and lower body each time. On the same token, I have been gaining weight. I admit that for about a month I was not counting calories. I thought I had a good handle on what I was eating. But I get so hungry after the gym, I really didn't. I gained 2 pounds (and then had the wedding shower and didn't get on the scale till a week later) So I started counting again 2 weeks ago and was back down to 131 on Saturday. I wasn't doing bad before, just not as big a deficit as I wanted. I am just super annoyed. I should have lost more than a single pound in 2 weeks. |

what she said was that if you eat carbs later at night your body isn't getting a chance to burn them off before you go to sleep. I guess that made sense to me for some reason. Maybe because I am totally frustrated. I wanted to lose weight for a wedding that I am in two weeks from now, but instead I gained weight (just one pound but still) and 3% body fat!
I count calories. I eat between 1400 and 1500 calories a day. I work out 6 days a week for at least an hour. Sendentary at work I burn about 1600 calories a day. At the gym I burn about 500. This is about a 500 to 600 calorie deficit. I don't know what the deal is. I know i just turned 30 but what the heck is the deal?! |

That is really not helpful. I LIKE my trainer. Why fire her. She pushes me really hard and my arms are looking great. Is she wrong about the carbs? If she is say so. |

I understand.. not only has that happened to me, but if I ask a question in chat I am ignored as well. I do not recieve an answer. 5 days later I find my question buried with not a single response. I am also a chat killer, so I aplogize now if I am the last response to your thread. I don't know what it is about me. I don't usually even come to chat because of the chilly response I get but every once in a while I venture. I have had people, e-mail me, without my going to them first. They ask questions and I never hear from them again. I have been a member for about 6 years off and on, and I find myself irritated that I get so little support here when many others get a much warmer welcome. I make no aplogies for being busy and not being able to chat all day at work. I am a new attorney and have billing requirements as a result. Anyway, I hope this makes you feel better. |

Gonna throw in my two cents. This is not a diet.. This is a life style change, and it is unreasonable for anyone to expect you to never have ice cream (or anything else that you enjoy) ever again. That is why diets always fail. You CAN have your ice cream. You just need to plan for it, and have A serving, not 5. I have ice cream every night when I was maintaining, and still have it now that I have decided to lose another 5 pounds. I work it in. If I deny myself, I just want it more and will binge.
It seems to me that you are doing all the right things. You can't expect to lose every week. Our bodies go through plateaus. It is just something that we have to get used to. You will lose again. Just keep doing all the right things that you are doing. |

I thought that too.. But as it turns out with me, I lose weight the same way I gain but backwards... what I mean is.. I IMMEDETIALLY see gain in my face, then my tummy and thighs, and so on.. I lose it the other way... Thighs, then tummy then face... Keep doing what you are doing. You are obviously on the right track. |

Missing so many vitamins and nutirients. If you eat the same thing every day, you will start craving the things you need. Like fatty acids and the Omegas. Your body needs more nutrients than you are giving it even if you were eating enough. |

I gained 30 pounds on the shot. They didn't tell me that was on of the side effects until after. I am on Nuva ring now and I love it. Also, the shot made me crazy. Like crying at commercials crazy. |

I am 5'3. 130 is a perfectly healthy weight for someone that is 5'3. Annnnddd then that camera takes pictures and I feel like the 6 days at the gym are doing NOTHING. Worse, I am totally stuck here. I have been working out 6 days a week and even got a trainer and I KILL myself, and the scale went UP not DOWN. I am eating what I should be and I keep getting told, muscle weighs more than fat. Yeah, I know that but I should be LOSING FAT TOO! What is the deal? |

I think I would try everything on the list... I'll try anything once. Try it doesn't mean eat the whole thing. You can have a taste, just can't over do it. Plus, it isn't like you would ever eat any of that stuff every day. Once in a while (followed by about an hour on the tredmill) is totally OK. If you deprive yourself, THAT is when bad things happen! |

Good For YOU!! You did this on your own and now you know that YOU can do it without surgery. FYI, My Aunt had that surgery, and guess what, 4 years later, she is the heaviest she has ever been. It is not a miracle. It is just a painful surgery. You have proven that you are ready to do this and YOU ARE DOING THIS.. GOOD FOR YOU! |

I know what you are dealing with, but for diffrent reasons. Not only have I been fat, and thin, and now normal, but my problem, (which I guess doesn't sound like a problem on the outside), is that I look like a kid. I was mistaken for a 17 year old yesterday. I just turned 30. People say, well that's great, and don't look a gift horse in the mouth and just plain you're lucky, get over it. Try being taken seriously with clients when they think you are just out of highschool, not just out of law school. NO ONE takes me seriously. Blessing or curse, I find myself telling people how old I am all the time so that they will take me seriously. Then there is a round of questions... Wow you're so lucky, how do you do it, ect... I tell them a good diet and exercise, and moisterizer with sunscreen helps, but I have good genes there. Pretty soon a half hour of my client meeting has been eaten up by this mess. Also, there was someone that said that young thin people don't or won't understand. Not all of us were born with great thin genes. Personally I have had to work at it every single day. Again, I look young, but I am not as young as I look. Finally, I have learned more life lessons in my short life than many learn in a lifetime. Try not to judge ANY book by its cover.. not even the skinny ones. Schwinn, don't let it get you down. Just move on. If it really bothers you tell management. I am sure they would LOVE to know that she wouldn't sell you the more expensive string and that she treated you so poorly. I am sorry for what you went through, but some people are just dumb. |

I do that! When I actually log, I get obsessive and don't eat enough. If I keep a running tally in my head, I am not so obsessed, eat more, and actually lose. PLUS, I am not the crazy person that I am when I write it all down. |

I have had a variety of trainers, and I have found that having a woman train me is better for me. I have never felt that the men understand that it is HARDER for a woman to lose weight. We are supposed to eat less every day! That being said, I like the more mature woment as opposed to college aged women. Someone 35 or older I feel, understands where I am at and that my metabolism is not where it was when I was 19. It isn't so easy being a woman!

You have just started weight training. When I did this, it took FOREVER to lose, but I could SEE changes. Here is what is happening... You are gaining muscle weight, (which is nicer looking and leaner) and losing fat. The muscle weighs more (sorta) so you are probably losing the fat as fast as you are gaining the muscle. Also when you lift weights, you are basically tearing the muscles. They use water to heal (or something like that) What I do know is that water goes into the muscles so that makes the scale think you are heavier too. Keep it up though, you will eventually start to see the scale go down, but in the mean time, start measuring. It is such a great feeling to see the inches come off, or your muscles get bigger. (that was what I wanted!)
Good luck! |

That is what I thought, and that is why I do eat more, but I keep gaining..gaining...gaining. I tried Upping my calories, and I gained more, I lessened them and gained less... on 1400 to 1600 I am kinda steady, but not losing, and I do gain a little. It is so BIZARRE! This has been going on for MONTHS. |

Really? 1200 cals? Thats it? That seems kinda low, but maybe I am eating too much and thinking it is OK because I am working out. I read that in an article today actually. I'll skim it back a bit and see what happens.
Thanks! |
