Games & Challenges How low can you go? Aug 31 2009
05:00 (UTC)

So I started out the week trying to calculate and estimate everything I ate and cooked. Needless to say, after a day and a half of calculating over an hour or two...I sort of gave up.

It's not that I didn't want to do the challenge or that I didn't take it seriously, I just found it hard to figure out the amount of money for every meal and snack, every day of the week. I'm the kind of person that needs a little variety from day-to-day. I can eat dinner leftovers for lunch...but not seven days in a row.

Talking with you all about this really did make me look twice at how much of certain items I was using. Such as, if large jars of all-natural peanut butter are on sale for a least $1 or more off, I am stocking up. I use that stuff all the time. Same with pasta, bread, yogurt and other staples. I also noticed that there are some items I didn't really even touch during the week (certain sauces and condiments were big ones) so I think I am going to try to find a way to cut back on how many we have open and in use while trying to also make some at home.

Overall, gave me a new look at the things we eat and buy in out home. So I think, even though I didn't keep my daily spending info, I learned a lot this week. So thanks! :)

I say do whatever works best for you. If you can keep your daily intake in your head and still see a steady weight loss, go for it!

I fell off the bandwagon when it came to logging each and every calorie, telling myself that after a year of logging the info I could just tally it in my head. Long story short, I am just now starting to come off of a 6 month plateau because I haven't been logging my calories. I didn't gain any weight during these 6 months, so I know that when the days of maintaining comes along, I shouldn't have to log everything then.

But again, that's just me. It is different for everyone.

I've been sitting here trying to figure out the best way to keep track of everything and also decided an Excel sheet is probably best. Plus, I think I am going to write the price of each item on the container. That way I don' have to keep up with tons of receipts.

My boyfriend is going to come home and see $3.49 on the milk and think I've gone crazy. :)

I like this. I think the cost/calorie ratio will be the best way to calculate it. That way we are only calculating for ourselves and not the whole household (I'm sure it varies between us all). I also like that you said if you count it in calories, you count it in price. That's good because trying to caculate how much a tablespoon of cinnamon from a bulk container bought 6 months ago would cost...torture!

When you post the link on Monday in the other thread, will you post the thread here as well? Thanks!

Hey laides...Sherylyn just shared the idea behind this "challenge" with me and I want to join, if you don't mind. I just did some grocery shopping and still have my receipt, so I should be able to figure out the math for each meal.

I have some questions -

1) when is the official start date and how long will it last?

2) are we competing for a full day budget or per meal? if per meal, just the 3 main meals or snacks too?

3) are we going to base the budget on just ourselves or for the household?

4) how should we count things like baked goods...breads, muffins, etc. that use things like oil and spices that we've had for far to long to calculate?

...I really hope I didn't make this a lot more difficult that it should be. I am a very friendly competitor so I just want to make sure I'm doing it right. :)

I'm looking forward to this.

February was not the best month for me.  Sorry I have been so absent lately.  There has been a lot going on this month and I haven't been keeping up with CC or my weight loss as much as I should.  At least I lost this month.  I anticipate March being a better time for me.  Hopefully.

Congrats to everyone that made it through another month!  I'll be back soon. :)

The fact that we have collectively lost over 300 lbs is outstanding!  That just goes to show that we are really helping each other by being members of this group.  Such a great feeling to know that so many people are sticking with their goals and keeping themselves accountable on here each month.

Great job everyone!

SW (Jan. 1) : 267.0

EW (Feb. 1): 258.2

Total lost in January: 9.8

Very close to my 10 lbs goal, so I feel it was a successful January.  February goal is 9 lbs so I can finally drop below 250 and be at the official half-way mark.  :)

BTW, I love the biggest loser...watch it every week.  I know it is very unrealistic to see the same results at home.  But watching them really motivates me.  I know what it is like to be so overweight that the idea of running on a treadmill for one full minute is almost impossible to think about.  Then I watch a full season of TBL and I know that one day, I too will see the results they have seen if I just keep at it and make the lifestyle changes necessary.

I was sooooo close to an even 10 lbs *toss* this month, but oh well.  This is the most I have lost in one month for a while now.  Hopefully I will be able to keep this up through the month of February.

My March 1 goal is 250 lbs.  It's ambitious since February is the shortest month of the year, but if I work hard, I can do it. If I do get to 250...that means there will be a LOT of celebrating on March 1.  That will mean I have lost 75 lbs, which is the half way point to my current main goal weight.

I hope you all find success this next month and I thank you all for being here.

That is an amazing accomplishment Sun!  I hope you hold your head high each and every time you say your weight-loss number outloud.  You have done what others have only assumed to be impossible and for that, I find you to be an outstanding role model to those of us that are working hard.

Happy weekend everyone! I was hoping to get out of the house this weekend since the weather has been so horrible this week in Chicago, but it may be another weekend in.  Oh well.  I tend to eat much better on the weekends if I stay in the house.  Like I mentioned before, weeks are always a little harder for me to keep on a solid food schedule and not allow myself a few more "extras" than I normally do.  So far, so good.  :)

Hope you are all doing well and staying warm.  Welcome to all the new people!

Happy Thursday everyone!  Welcome to all the new people.  I hope you find the motivation and support you are looking for as you begin/continue your weight-loss journey.

I've been craving sweets this week, so I assume that means it's about that time.  Oh well.  I try hard not to get down on myself for having something unplanned in my daily intake.  It's not always easy to say no to something we really want and I know once I have it, even a little of whatever it is, that the craving will subside and I can just work a little harder over the next few days to get it out of my system.  I got very discouraged around the end of last year with all the weight plateaus, but I started the new year with a positive attitude and I plan to do what I can to keep it.

njakamarilyn - you asked what we want to do once we hit our goal weight...I want to go sky diving.  :)

Welcome botzz!  I am so glad you started a weight loss blog to document your journey.  I though about doing the same in January 2008 when I started my loss, but I was not prepared to share everything with the world.  I finally started one (http://howthinfeels.blogspot.com) a few days before the new year and I think it is going to be a great way to stay accountable.  Best of luck on the rest of your loss...or "toss" as we've started saying around the group.

Happy Tuesday everyone! Today is my offical weigh in day.  Weighing in at 260.0 (come on 250's!), my lowest weight so far.  That is aroudn 9lbs loss for the month of January - bye holiday weight!  Only 10 more pounds and I will be at 75 lbs loss, my half-way point.  Oh the shopping I plan to do when that day gets here.  :)

Oh, and the bf suprised me with a body bugg unit!  We're not doing the online plan or anything.  He just purchased the unit, one for each of us.  So the new year has been good to me...new HRM and new pedometer.  I've already walked a mile today.

pixieninja - Congrats on the loss! I wish my company would do the BL at work, but there are way to many people.  We do a ten week program during the fall that is designed by the American Cancer Society.  It's a good program, I ran it this year (which means I couldn't win), but it just isn't as managable and "friendly" competitive enough for me.

denise07 - On the show you watched, how did she lose all the weight?  Was it through constant healthy eating and daily exercise?  If your body loses too much weight, too fast, your skin will not rebound.  Some of the research I have seen leads me to believe that losing weight at a slow and stead pace (1-2 lbs a week) will really help keep your skin in check.  There will be loose skin, but nothing some stratigic clothing options won't cover.  :)

marinehead - Welcome!  It's so exciting to have your significant other taking this journey with you.  If my boyfriend and I had not decided at the same moment that it was time for us to take control of our lives, I don't think I would have been this successful.  We will all have our bad days, so it's great to have someone to keep us accountable and want us to be successful.  My best to you and your wife.

Weight Loss people in their 20s looking to lose 100+ lbs? Jan 12 2009
15:30 (UTC)

The majority of my loss came from a complete lifestyle overhaul.  I decided I was ready to do this for myself and this time, make it stick.  I was also luck to have a boyfriend that had a similar goal.  Having CC is great for support, but a real life support system has been the best thing for me.  Mid-January 2008 I started. I got rid of all food in the house that didn't have some kind of healthy benefit - examples: all regular pasta out and only whole wheat pasta in; all other breads and grains became whole wheat/multi-grain, etc.; all snacks became low-fat/sugar-free/100-calorie packs (which are still limited); purchasing more fresh fruits and veggies from the local market and including in meals for a better balance.

I started to portion my meals (if you don't have one, buy a food scale...it will save your life) so I knew exactly how much I was putting into my body. Then I did my best to log my calories into CC on a daily basis (it's hard to do it everyday, but do as much as you can).  It's the best way to keep yourself accountable AND lets you know when you have ate well enough to deserve a yummy snack (my favorite is Skinny Cow Ice Cream Sandwiches!).

I try to keep to a 500-1000 calorie deficit a day.  In 2008, I hit a few big plateaus, so I decreased my daily deficit until I felt it was time to start working back to the 500-1000/day goal.  I weigh myself officially once a week (usually on Tuesday because of a challenge here on CC) and if I weigh myself any other time throughout the week, I use it only check my progress.  It was hard not to get discouraged with day-to-day weigh-ins, so I only emotionally react to official weigh-in days.

As for exercise, I started 2008 out going to the gym 4-5 times a week for at least an hour.  I did that for most of the winter and spring months.  Once late spring/early summer hit, the last thing I wanted to do was be in an overcrowded gym when it was so wonderful to be outside.  I did a few workouts at home whenever the weather wasn’t at its best, but most days I tried to walk outside.  I would walk around downtown on the weekends.  Walk to local restaurants for meals with friends. Walk to the grocery.  I would also get off the train a few stops early and walk the extra mile or so home after work.  Once fall came, I was exercising a lot less and started to get discouraged because I was in my third weight-plateau.  I took a month or two and did the research and “soul searching” I needed to do to get me through the holidays and into the new year.  Now I feel energized to accomplish the goals I didn’t accomplish in 2008.  Feel free to add me or contact me if you have any questions or want any advice.  I’m not an expert, but I am very open about the changes I have made. Good Luck!

Weight Loss people in their 20s looking to lose 100+ lbs? Jan 12 2009

Like Sharpdust, I found this group last year and during the course of the year wasn't able to keep up (sorry!).

I came back to CC last January (15th) with a starting weight of 325 lbs.  Through 2008, I hit a few weight-loss plateaus, but closed the year with 60 lbs loss.  I have set a very ambitious goal to lose 100 lbs in 2009, which means roughly two lbs a week for 52 weeks.  It was my goal for 2008 and I lost 60 of the 100.  So if I manage to lose anything close to that this year, I'll be happy.

I'm currently using CC each day to log calories and weight. I'm also trying to keep up with a few good groups for support and try to keep my journal updated as well.  I have also started a weight-loss blog to help keep me accountable for the rest of this journey... http://howthinfeels.blogspot.com/ - so far, so good! I've already lost all my additional holiday weight and a few pounds extra.

I hope you are all having a successful and happy 2009...see you around the forums!
