And the verdict is.......

(sound of drumrolls)....

GIRL!

Just got back from the ultrasound! We hadnt yet decided if we wanted to know the gender. The u/s technician said she would write it down and put it in a sealed envelope for us to open later.

Of course when we got home we were so eager to know that we couldnt wait! We ripped the envelope open, and there it was!

The HB was 130 today, lower than the last two times (149/145). So much for the under 150 HB/girl theory!

Unless of course the baby is pulling a fast one on all of us....!

Otherwise, things are fine. Baby is perfectly well and wriggling around! My OB was pleased with all my vital signs, and said that the weight gain is perfectly normal and healthy.

Great to hear that things have calmed down, peaches.

I go for my big ultrasound today. A little nervous because the scale this morning said I had gained 3 lb overnight (since yesterday). I have been eating a lot more lately- and a lot more sweets, since I had a birthday a couple days ago. That pushes the total weight gain up to about 14 lb during the pregnancy, and I am only 18 weeks so far! Eek!

We havent decided whether we are going to find out the baby's sex today. Its going to be a spot decision! I do have another u/s scheduled for December 2nd, so we still have a chance to find out!

This made me laugh!

I grew up in Eugene, OR and walked or rode a bike almost everywhere until I was 25.  Then I got a car, but still walked as much as I could (it's stressful to drive!!!) I moved to Chicago 3 years ago and continued to walk as much as I could, but I am amazed at how strange people think it is! At first I got teased at work a lot "Oh, did you walk here in your little tennis shoes?".  At first it was annoying (and kinda sad because people are really overweight on the whole here), but I found a good way to combat it... Because I have been so active for so many years I have really strong, great legs (of course there is a genetic component as well), so I show up in short workout shorts and instead of teasing me for walking, people just say "Jeez your legs are insane!" and I can say "well, I walk everywhere".

I so identify with this! I grew up in cities with great public transport systems, but more than that, started walking everywhere when I was 17 to get healthier and stay sane. I STILL walk to and from work (I work at a university 25 minutes from where I live) and get in an hour or two more on good weather days! I love walking because it calms me down, gives me a good workout ( I do anywhere from 3-5 miles an hour) and gets me places without driving!

And yes, I have always gotten compliments on my strong, graceful and shapely legs:)

Weight Loss What's your diet secret? Nov 14 2009
13:01 (UTC)

Here are some things that help me:

Eang small amounts frequently seems to help a lot.

I also dont forbid myself anything; just try and fit it into my calories for the day.

Eating mostly at home, cooking for myself and my husband.

Going over once in a while, and realizing that the world is not going to end.

Making sure I get enough good quality nutrients- protein, carbs, fat, vitamins, minerals- through my regular food, rather than through nutritional supplements.

Regular sleep and exercise habits.

Keeping things interesting: trying out different recipes, ingredients, methods of cooking; and doing different kinds of exercise. Nothing kills a health regimen like boredom!

Laughing a lot, staying positive.

Caring for myself and cultivating a kind voice in my head, not a stern punishing voice!

And of course it helps that I have a wonderful husband and family.

Thats smart of you to time your doctor's visits in the morning! I usually go in the morning too but mostly because my husband can drop me on his way to work!

I have also gained around 10 lb. Have been walking a lot but need to get back to yoga and strength training.

Big appointment is a week from today (18th November)- hopefully we will also find out!

I too worry, just dont let it get to me, because I cant control anything,

Health & Support Insomnia and weight loss Nov 11 2009
15:12 (UTC)

I have always had sleep issues too and I am sorry you are going through this. For me, anxiety was an important factor as I struggled through adolescence and early adulthood, but recently I found cognitive behavioral therapy extremely useful. Also, setting up good sleep hygiene- regular sleep and wake times, not lying in bed and agonizing about sleeping, eating at least a couple of hours before bed, exercising at least a couple of hours before bed, no TV or computer, maybe some mindless shopping catalogues or novels just before bed, a warm bath and a glass of milk- all of these help.

Meditation, yoga and breathing exercises are also useful in calming the mind.

About how insomnia affects weight loss efforts- when I have a bad spell, I tend to eat more- apparently thats because insomnia affects your appetite control center in the brain.

I avoid exercising too much when I am having a bad spell, but do some exercise by all means. I avoid using the gym machines when I am sleep deprived because my balance and muscular co-ordination are affected by lack of sleep so I am afraid of injuring myself. But treadmill, elliptical, walking and yoga are all great. Dont overtire yourself because that can worsen the insomnia.

Leftovers from last night, taco salad.....ground turkey browned with chopped onions, peppers, mixed beans, and corn, on a bed of lettuce, cheese, fresh salsa, and yogurt, with some guiltless gourmet chili lime tortilla chips. And a pear. It was delicious! I had to bring a lot of containers to work to keep it all separate until lunchtime, but totally worth the extra effort.

Sounds yum! I have to try this sometime.

I am having whole wheat pasta with home made beef and veggie bolognese sauce.  Cant wait...am hungry now!

With both my pregnancies, I was surprised, but both times, there was a moment of madness- this feeling of oh-my-God-I have-to-take- a-test-NOW! Second time around, I kind of just rushed out and bought a pregnancy test.

BUt then I was late both times, so not totally unexpected.

Congratulations jujubeas! How exciting!

I have my next scan on Nov 18th- thats the big one- will be around 19 weeks.

Also, a lady from the hospital called up and asked if I would like to participate in a study that is trying to find out whether a shortened cervix is associated with pre-term labor. I said yes, since it only involves another transvaginal ultrasound and then some follow ups if they find me eligible. I hope I dont have a shortened cervix, but I thought it would be good to participate in research like this to further the understanding of pregnancy and birth complications.

What does everyone think? Are too many ultrasounds not good for baby?

Foods My New Strategy...what's yours? Nov 04 2009
12:06 (UTC)

In addition to using a weigh scale like GI Jane says (invaluable- I recently found out that a slice of good wholesome whole wheat bread from my local bakery actually weighs twice as much as supermarket breads!!!), and practicing portion control, I check in with my stomach and senses every so often when I am eating or thinking of eating. I eat slowly, and usually when I have had enough, my appreciation for the food goes down. Thats when I know I need to put down my fork.

I eat clean most of the time too, but we eat out a lot. My strategies for that are to save a few hundred extra calories for eating out, but also to eat enough beforehand so that I dont pounce on the food at the restaurant.

Wow, I just chanced upon this thread and thank you all! Thank you SO much bier- that is a great website! I have been watching my BMI and weight go up on CC and getting totally depressed and paranoid because I am eating what I thought was SO much- but it turns out I am right on target for my stage of pregnancy! Intuitive eating really DOES work.

Makes me feel a lot better and more relaxed.

Hotharmony, I have the same issues as you about not wanting to gain too much weight. But I agree 100% with Meryl.  Guilt around eating is not good for you or the baby. Eat well and enough, and work on relaxing with your body's needs. I have also gained more than five pounds and I am barely in my second trimester.

Theres so much hype in the media about how women should do themselves and their babies a favour by not gaining more than five pounds. Its enough to make anyone panic. The fact remains that some women will gain more and some less and there is a wide range of normal and healthy. As long as you dont go on a junk food rampage for the rest of your pregnancy, you will be fine.

The other thing that helps me a lot is gentle exercise. It helps keep me feeling energetic. I couldnt do much during my first trimester, but I am trying to work in more exercise now- walking, yoga or a gentle cardio or low impact aerobics session.

Sorry to hear about your job peaches. Hopefully it wont be too long before you get another one.

I had my 14 week check up a couple days ago and alls well. I am also starting to get my energy back, which is a good thing.

The HB has been 149 and 145 last two checkups, so I am guessing boy! I think I want a girl a teeny weeny little bit more, but either is fine!

Motivation Why am I always so hungry? Oct 20 2009
21:03 (UTC)

You are hungry because you are simply not eating enough. As others have suggested, ESPECIALLY if youre under twenty one, eat more. No wonder you cant pay attention in school.

If you continue this way, you are either going to starve yourself or you are going to react one day by eating whatever the hell it is you can get your hands on, and binge. Neither feels good or is healthy and will only makeyou continue to have a weight and eating issue.

A healthy diet for a school going kid/teenager would be:

A banana with your oatmeal (I hope you use milk) as well as two egg whites.

A mid morning snack- maybe a piece of fruit or toast or even a piece of healthy grilled chicken.

Add some veggies with your lunch roll- veggies have a lot of fiber, few calories and fill you up. And top it off with yogurt or a banana.

An afternoon snack- again, a piece of toast with peanut butter; or a fruit smoothie.

And if you are still hungry after dinner, have a small cup of warm skim milk.

Add some whole grains to your chicken and vegetables at night- brown rice, a tortilla, or bread.

Sounds like a lot, but if you eat enough, you actually LOSE weight because your metabolism works like its supposed to AND you dont feel deprived and go and eat junk out of desperation.

Sammalone,

A 0.5 lb loss per week is amazing! I know that when I was trying to lose weight, I would go a few weeks with no loss and then suddenly I would be down by 3 lb and stick there.

Dont lose patience. Its hard yes, but think of how you are cahanging your habits and how far you have come since you started.

My heart goes out to you. It must be a very difficult time, and I cant even begin to imagine what you must be feeling.

One word of advice though- it might actually help you cope with the stress a little better if you took some time- even fifteen minutes to half an hour- out each day for yourself and used it to exercise. Exercise helps me through me darkest moments and lifts my spirits.

Also try deep breathing. I know you are busy but it helps if you just take a few minutes during the day.

Hugs and prayers.

Pregnancy & Parenting Pregnancy weight gain fears make me feel nuts! Oct 19 2009

I wouldnt worry too much either way. Eat healthy nutritious foods as far as possible and dont worry if you lose/ gain a little weight. Seriously.

BUT PLEASE DONT DIET DURING PREGNANCY_ ITS THE WORST THING YOU CAN DO TO YOURSELF AND YOUR BABY.

Having said that, a lot of women do in fact lose weight during the first trimester. There are women who gain 10 lb during their first trimester and women who lose 15 (those who have m/s). So dont worry if you havent gained as much as recommended. Eat nutrient dense foods that will give you and the baby maximum health. On the other hand, dont panic if you are hungry and feel like your body wants more food.

Eat well, get as much rest and exercise as you need, and relax.

Easier said than done, but go with the flow.

I am officially 13 weeks along today, and surprised by a sudden bout of tears. Havent been feeling like this for weeks, is it just exhaustion and worry or could it be hormonal?

I have my next apptment on Monday. Sometimes I worry that I will lose the baby in between apppointments and not know it- last time I was pregnant I went back for a second u/s and found no heartbeat- but I try not to let fear get the better of me.

All the best for tomorrow! I am sure all will go super well!
