Weight Loss Oh no...a vacation! May 25 2009

I wouldn't worry. I have just returned last night from a weekend away in Greece. Yes,  my weight has changed a bit but I am not concerned. I knew that was the consequence of my choices of drinks & ice-cream!!

Just make the good choices:

  • Avoid the obviously fatty choices (fries, bacon, cheese, alcohol, icecream)
  • Only have 1 serving so that you still control your portions.
  • Throw in as much movement in any given day that you are away.

Then you'll see that it won't be so  bad Smile

Most importantly ENJOY YOUR VACATION, CC will definitely be here so you can get right on track once you are back again.

You could always double check the calories in other databases, such as:

http://www.thecaloriecounter.com

http://www.calorieking.com/foods/

http://www.acaloriecounter.com

I do not know which counter is more reliable. I just googled them this minute.

What I normally do is that I compare what the food states and what CC states.

Weight Loss I can't stick with calorie counting May 12 2009
05:26 (UTC)

The thing with CC is that you have to be comitted to it in order to work. This means being willing (at least for the first few weeks/months) to log all your activity and calorie consumption, until you reach a point where you instinctively know how much you are using and consuming.  Doing this is very time consuming, especially in the beginning. I'm still working on that myself and I am not even certain that I will ever reach that point, but that doesn't matter much to me for now.

Your post makes me wonder if you ever had the motivation to be on this "diet" in the first place. What I mean is that it is not enough to be committed to using CC correctly itself (for if you are not being precise with this site then it looses it's value, it's only as good as you make it), but you also have to WANT to loose weight for yourself, for your own benefit, instead of trying to loose weight because someone else is expecting this of you?

In any case, commitment to yourself is paramount. If you find that you can't stick to using the site, then the only thing that I can suggest for you to do is to go for Weight Watchers - they count calories too, although they use a different system. Maybe that one works for you.

Good luck in any case.

Weight Loss 3rd week on CC - have I already hit a plateau? May 06 2009

Thank you for your feedback as well kthompson, you definitely also got a point there, i didn't think about that!

Thanks for the pointers as well, I am currently aiming to drink abou 3 liters of water pr day, but I averagely get about 2 liters.

For the fibers, I´m eating about 4 slices of dark bread daily, but I am wondering if there are other ways (less rich also) of getting enough fibers.

Fitness How much do I need to add to my activity log? May 06 2009
07:17 (UTC)

I have set myself up as "sedentary" as my activity level (work/transport wise i sit 60 hours on average per week), so the way I understand it, that includes no actitivy as such other than just exisiting.

I therefore put in the following:

  • personal grooming
  • groceries; carriying it upstairs (I live on the 4th floor, no lift)
  • cleaning (clothing/dishes)
  • cooking (when I remember to add it, somehow I tend to forget this one)
  • walking (any type of outdoor walking, such as to work/home; etc)
  • biking
  • shopping.

I do not put this in: sexual activity, walking from room to room, toilet visits etc.
I find adding information like that too obsessive.

Well no-one is blaming the American people for causing the rest of the world to become obse, stop being so touchy about it. Smile

The fact is that chains like Subway, Mc Donalds, Burger King, KFC, etc have been spreading like a forest fire over here.

They are litteraly everywhere, litteraly there is a junkfood joint in almost every street corner and they have usually long opening hours. I'm not exaggerating, and they are cheep, very cheap.

Because many people are lazy, it is unfortunatley often easier to go the ceap, quick and availble choice compared to taking the efford in selecting a more healthy choice.

So it's not the Amarican people that make the Europeans fat, we do that ourselved by making the wrong choices and chose to endorse companies that, just so happens, are American in origin.

Weight Loss Thinking about taking diet pills? May 03 2009

That is indeed true sauvignon, which I why I do my research -  the pills that I take for instance don't do anything to my metabolism (I would not touch anything that invasive), they only help me reduce my appetite so that I do not overeat during dinner  Wink

Good luck with your friend though.

like the previous poster just said, it takes about 3500 of calories above your maintenance level before you will gain weight. To eat that much during one night out with your family seems quite unlikely - 3500 calories is a lot of food!! If you are concerned, just eat what you enjoy and feel like eating, but don take seconds, keep the portions reasonable.

In two weeks I'm going on a long weekend to Greece, with all inclusive food and drink - I'm not concerned. I'm learning to eat smaller and more reasonable portions, so I am confident that I won't overeat like I used to. When I'm back home again I will just "get back on the wagon" and start counting calories again.

Just relax and enjoy your evening out Smile

Hi Cupcakes,

It's good to read that you are covering from an eating disorder. Well done! Smile

I've been googling a bit and I have found this resource, which seems very reliable. and it states about 1800 calories per day (but that is without taking activities into consideration): Nutrition Guidelines for Children

But, since you are very active it is important that you sure that you eat enough, carbs are a good source of energy for you.  I think that 1800 is a on the low side for you (because you are so active), you probably need to exceed 2100 calories , but I am not an expert and I also do not know how many calories you burn exactly with your exercise. Ideally to mantain your weight you should consume as much as you burn. Nnothing more and nothing less (obviously small variations here and there are no biggie)

CC can help you figure your needs out after you have entered your calorie intake and all your activity.

You are also still growing and recovering, so don't be surpriced if you start gaining a little weight as your body is developing into that of a woman. Don't fight it, it's part of growing up. Smile

Make the right choices (no junk food etc) and remember to drink milk - your bones are still developing, now is the time to make them strong, for when you have stopped growing and reached adulthood, then you cannot do much more about them...

Good luck with your progress and keep up posted!

Thank you for posting the link. I think that many uses here are from the States, so for them it's definitely important to know that.

Here in Europe where I am from and live in, we don't really have cases like that, the rules are quite strict about putting things out in the market that are meant for human consumption. Most products don't work obviously, but they wouldn't kill you either (unless you're allergic or something).

In any case it's best to avoid products like that, and if you need to take a supplement, always do so in collaboration with your doctor.

To help me reducing my appetite in the evening I am taking this natural product.

Motivation I'm not sure where to start... May 02 2009
09:32 (UTC)

I agree with both previous posters. It is paramount that you do this for yourself, you are your own greatest motivator (and for some people saboteur as well..).

Start slow with easy realistic goals that don't feel like sacrifices (for instance smaller portions, no butter on the bread, etc) and move more.

Don't worry about your trip to Aruba, it's your every day behaviour and patterns that matter the most.

I'm facing a trip to Greece (all-inclusive), and I'm not freaked out about it: I can (and so can you) make the healthy choices and not go overboard in the free supply of food and drinks and still have fun. Eat what you want, but don't over do the portions. Make the healthy choices, for instance regular potatoes instead of French fries, etc. If you want a drink, have water on the side, choose for the "light" options, and so on.  At least that's what I intend to do - even now I allow myself 1 alcoholic beverage in the evening for enjoyment, without massively overdoing my calorie intake and still I am loosing weight Smile

Like you, I am also not one of the tallest of the bunch: 160 cm (5'2") and my starting weight was 71.8 KG (April 20th/09) and this morning I was down to 69.2 KG -  So I definitely know where you're coming from. Except that I don't have grandchildren nor do I have children (I'm 38 in two months) Wink

Good luck with your weight loss and have fun on your trip! Don't forget the sun screen! Cool

I have head about that from a former colleague that used to live by this.
I do not have much faith in "Eat right for your type" theory.
Granted, our bodies are like a machine, like a car if you will: it does matter if you put gazoline in a diesel motor or vice versa. Just like if you are allergic to something then you shouldn't eat it.

What I find really bad, downright irresponsible even, with D'amato's theory is that exclusion of whole food groups is promoted. How can it be good for omnivores like us to exclude whole food groups? Whatever happened to the healty and well-balanced diet?

No, I would advice anyone not to listen to D'amano's claims, I honestly doubt that in the long run they will lead to anything good.

Excellent formula! Well done and very useful Laughing

Since I've only been working on my weight since last monday (April 20th) it's probalby too early for me to use this...

A little calculator would definitely be appreachiated for in a couple of 2-4 weeks time! Wink

My data is otherwise the following:

Activity level: sedentary
1.3 KG (2.9 lbs)
7 days
1733 calories on average (my aim is lower though)

Now that is a great idea! I think that I want to implement it myself.

Buying a deserved treat (that should not be food in my case) is definitely good motivation!

I personally would not re-set my long term goal as I am affraid that it would let me loose track.

Thanks for the idea!

Motivation The bad influence of friends Apr 22 2009

ktg72:   The underlying issue here is that your friends need to respect your decission, regardless of they agree or not. How they can be horrified that you want to live a healthy life is beyond me. So my first suggestion is simply this: Make new friends that share your values!

If you choose to go anyway you actually have many options:

Control your portions and avoid the alcohol - or at most allow yourself 1-2 beverages, while drinking lots of water.

Avoid what you already know is "fatty" or high on sugar

Contribute yourself in the making/buying the food for these bbq's - then you have more control over the food choice.

Bring your own meals & drink.

Good luck!
