Weight Loss Elliptical question Jun 26 2009

Building muscle doesn't make you lose weight, it makes you gain it, as muscle weighs more than fat does.  So even if fat does transform into muscle, it doesn't show up that way on the scales.  But your body will look better, probably lose inches, but weight won't just drop off.  I'm personally at the place where I don't really mind what the scale says, I'd just rather see that number and it be muscle instead of fat.

Weight Loss Elliptical question Jun 26 2009

My understanding is that going backwards helps your rear and upper legs.  I don't usually try it (I don't have great balance on that thing even when holding on to the stationary handles) but when I do, I feel it more in my upper legs and rear.  Forward elliptical, however does nothing except burn calories and tone up calves for me.  Which is enough to make me content with it.Laughing

Don't buy the sweets.  If they're not in the house, it's much harder to snack on them.  Besides, your teens don't need them either!  Instead buy carrots or apples, maybe some nuts for a little protein.

"im doing everything the same way i did in first month.. but my weight is so static.. its standing right there after the 10 lbs loss"

This line might be part of the problem.  You have to change what you do, increase time, weight, level of difficulty, reps, or whatever it is that you do, so that your body continues to work to keep up.  Eventually your body becomes used to a new routine, so some variety is key.

I spent over a decade not eating breakfast, once my body was used to not having food in the morning, if there ever was a time that I *did* eat breakfast, I felt like I was STARVING by like 11:30.  I think it's because your metabolism is being given something to work on and is getting faster so it goes through the calories quicker.  Hopefully that means it starts getting rid of the calories stored in fat next.

Probably not, 1500 seems a good  number, and like I said, a pound a week is an advisable healthy rate at which to lose weight.

Actually a pound a week is a good healthy rate to lose weight at.  Stepping up from "light" to "moderate" cardio would help burn some more calories, if you are able.

I usually wish I could use a magic wand, a little less graphic than scissors or a knife.  Laughing  I see myself as if I were in a graphics program, just take that little eraser tool and skim some off the edges.  He he he.

I'm not sure, but I believe infertile women still have monthly cycles.  Not having  your period regularly is more a reflection of body content, you need a certain level of fat in your system to sustain it.  Not enough fat will shut down the system.  Which is why lots of athletes, mal-nourished women, and slightly scary female body builders, will often stop their cycle.

Weight Loss Do you compensate for overeating at the next meal? Jun 15 2009

I think you have to compensate a little, which is why you can technically eat what you want, as long as you plan for it.  Like today I was craving a Chipotle burrito.  So I got one and blew about 75% of my daily cals enjoying it.  So to compensate I will be hitting the gym an extra day and munching on veggies for dinner.

Swimming would be my suggestion.  If you feel your heart rate going up, you can always slow down and just kick for a few laps.

Losing weight too fast is bad for your body.  If the end result is thin, then what's important is that you get there, not how long it took.

Try swimming, it's a full body workout with no impact on joints.  Helps all muscle groups, breathing, and stamina.

It's also only been two weeks, your body might think something is wrong and that it needs to hold on to reserves.  just keep at it.  Once your body knows that sustinance is still available, it'll start to let go of the extra.

I've been eating right and going to the gym for two months and still have about a 5 pound fluxuation on the scales.

I usually get derailed on the weekends too, which is a large hinderance to real progress.  If your weekend completely cancels out the work you did during the week...

It seems like you might need a few more calories, 1200 might not be enough for a regular day to day intake.  If you can get the weekends under control things should start changing.

I'm in the same sort of situation.  The last few years I've ate junk and not worked out at all.  While I didn't balloon out of control, the weight I've gained (about 20 pounds) just won't go anywhere even though I have completely changed what I eat for the better, drink only water, and work out three times a week.

But I keep at it, if for nothing else my heart is healthier and muscles I've forgotten about are waking up.

I'm in this boat too--5' 9',  160.  And I just keep telling myself that a tone and trim 160 is better than the jiggly out of shape 160 that currently exists.  So that's what I'm going for.  Not so much weight loss (though the 140 lbs it says on my drivers lisence would be nice to see again), but just being in better shape.  And a flat tummy.Smile

Your husband needs a reminder of what "for better or for worse" means.  Also, if he wants you to be thinner, maybe he should be encouraging instead of threatening.

You don't need a gym in order to do some exercise. Just get up and walk around the block a few times. Jog if you can. It'll be good for your heart, your weight, and might help the shape of your legs as well.

I am an extremely self consious gym goer, I have been known to leave early, or not even go in if it doesn't "feel" right.  I also am a terrible runner, something about it makes my balance all wonky, so I sort of understand where you're coming from.

Try converting those looks into inspiration so that when the day comes that you've reached your weight and fitness goals those same people can look at you and be impressed.

Also remember that muscle weighs more than fat, so if you're eating right, and working out a lot, building muscle will cause you to technically weigh more, but you'll be in better shape.

I haven't eaten breakfast since I was 12 years old, it's been hard for me to make the time and have the interest.  I usually bring some juice, and either an apple or a whole wheat English Muffin to work with me to try and get the day started.
