I know the cheese...we have it here in the Middle East and in Arabic we call it 'Mjaddaleh' which means 'plaited' cheese. I do not know any other name for it. I do not know its origin or how it is made either....I guess that was not very helpful |

Congratulations Pam you're doing great. What is wrong with your computer? Clearing the cache tends to solve most Internet problems. I could not send emails thru Yahoo last week (they were all ending up blank). When I cleared the cache everything worked fine. I have a new challenge coming up on Friday. I am playing in the Zonal Bridge Championship which will be held here in Amman. We will be playing 3 sessions per day with short breaks in between (10:30 AM till 8 PM). This means I will have to eat too many meals at the hotel, may not have time (or energy) to exercise, etc. for nine days. I will have to be really careful. Take care and see you next week...Sireen |

Hello there! Thanks for the nice words and compliment Pam, it is so sweet of you to say that and I really appreciate it. Many, many thanks for sharing your experience. I do not have any real experience with weight loss because when I was young I was one of those lucky people who could eat everything and never gain weight. I quit smoking when I was 35 and gained a lot, but I was so underweight to start with that I looked better. Problems started when I was 40, gaining a little bit at a time although I started smoking again. Earlier this year, I gained a whole lot more after a vacation in the US. I decided that enough was enough, I had to do something about it. I am also planning to stop smoking as soon as I get to my goal weight (I've cut down a lot). I've never tried to lose big amounts of weight before so I am learning a lot from everybody else's experience. I have been learning a lot from CC. This is a great site. The tools are really helpful. I have met many wonderful people here (like you I'll get right back after I weigh myself... |

I am 49 and paranoid about this. I have lost 9 kilos so far and seem to be winning the war against sagginess. I am doing all the things suggested by amethystgirl and not sure which one(s) are working. I am trying not to lose more than half a kilo per week by keeping my deficit around 500. At one point a few days ago I lost 1 kg very fast, and felt squishy/saggy, so I decided to eat more to reverse/slow down the weight loss. It seems to have worked...I gained it back and that horrible squishiness has gone away. I am back on a 500 deficit now. I am sure that slow weight loss helps. I am not sure about the other things but I am doing them all! I eat healthy food, including healthy fat from nuts and olive oil. I massage with creams and body lotion. I also drink lots and lots of water and green tea. I exercise and do some yoga. I have read your profile and understand that you have problems with your leg. Maybe you could try to do some slow exercises while sitting down if you can. Not sure if any of this helps... best of luck with your goals |

Well done Pam! Where is everybody else? I have upped my calorie intake a bit over the last couple of days. When I lost over a kilo really quickly after the vacation I noticed that my upper arms were 'wobbly', same with the rest of me but less obvious. I decided to eat a little bit more (still on a deficit, but not a huge one) to slow things down and give the exercise a chance to work. I am now within the normal BMI range and look fine so I am in no big hurry to get to my ideal weight. I definitely want to keep my body firm and toned, not flabby. If it means losing slowly, that is OK with me. I am exercising every day and eating very healthy food so I hope that the scales will register a loss next week. |

Back from vacation. I cannot believe I lost so much. I was very careful with the food. I also swam for hours and walked everywhere. Cheer up Pam, at least the numbers are heading in the right direction! I am sure it is all water weight or something like that. Have a great day...Sireen. |

Hello everyone. Great that you are back Karole. I am off to Sharm Al Sheikh (Egypt) with some friends for a short bridge holiday tomorrow morning. I will be back on Monday just in time for the weigh in which I am dreading....I will try to be good. I hope I can limit the wine and vodka during the vacation. Should be better for the bridge as well as the diet! I should swim every day instead of lounging on the beach drinking vodka. I hope that the heat will put me off food. It took me ages to pack. I had to try everything on because many of my clothes are too big. I did not realize how much smaller I have become. I had bought a dress for the gala dinner when I was visiting the US three months ago. I have never worn it and when I tried it on it looked really funny (I am not complaining...I really hate all my fat clothes, new or old!). All the best and enjoy the rest of the week!...Sireen |

I love wine and I am doing what dkenworthy advised. I started counting 5 weeks ago. At first, I was just saving a few calories for a small glass of wine every night without thinking about anything else. I lost one kilo then got stuck. A few days ago, I started checking that my diet was balanced. Now I use up the last few calories to balance my diet for the day if I have eaten too little fiber or protein or whatever (even if it means going over my calorie limit by a little bit). If I had already eaten 'right', I allow myself a very small glass of wine as a treat. I started losing weight again after doing that. I cannot have wine every night anymore because I am very bad at planning a balanced daily meal plan up front! I am hoping to get better after a while, the glass of wine is my incentive to learn! |

I think the total is 200. I just verified this by multiplying the fat by 9, and the carbs/proteins by 4 and calculated the percentages and they were the same as those in the analysis. This means that the carb figure in the analysis chart is the total. |

Hello everybody...hope you are all doing well. I hope Karole's husband is fine. Welcome Rosanne. You've done great so far. More than halfway there! Congratulations. Alex...wine is not cheating! I love wine. I try to leave a few calories in reserve for a small glass of red wine every other night. It is my reward for being good I have been sticking to it, but I did not have time to do any exercise today so I feel a bit guilty. I will work out as much as I can tomorrow to compensate. Have a great weekend! |

Hello again... This thread has been very active since I last visited it! Karole - I hope your husband's surgery went well and I hope he will feel much better soon. Do tell us how it went when you get a chance to log in. Alex - to answer your question I am Jordanian. I've lived in Jordan all my life except for when I studied at university in England many years ago. twinsand21 and solemnleaf2 - welcome to the thread. This thread is a great idea. Thank you, Alex, for starting it. The thought of Monday lurking just round the corner is motivating me to work extra hard on both my diet and exercise! I would love to share food suggestions. The spinach with pine nuts sounds great. I am going to try it. I usually cook spinach with chick peas. All other spinach variations I tried were a total disaster but I have high hopes for this one! I discovered a couple of days ago that my diet is healthy but not balanced. Maybe this is why I was stuck around the same weight for ages. I plugged my food statistics into Excel and noticed that my fiber and protein intake is very low, while carbs are too high. I hardly ever eat meat and I have already cut down cheese drastically. Based on what worked for you, Alex, it seems that I must cut down carbs next I am eating around 1450 every day. I am 5'7" tall. My daily deficit was low for the first half of this month but now it is between 500 and 700. I lost a lot of weight really fast when I started dieting and am really worried about hitting a plateau/loose skin/more wrinkles so I am dieting slowly |

Quitting smoking does lead to gaining weight, but I found that the opposite is not true. I quit smoking 15 years ago and gained 25 lb in record time. I could not stop eating. I did not mind the weight gain at that time because I was skinny (5'7 - 128 lb). I fell off the wagon and started smoking again 5 years later. I did not smoke again to lose weight, but subconsciously I hoped it would happen. I did not lose a single pound. On the contrary, I have been gaining a couple of pounds every year while smoking. I want to quit smoking and this is one of the reasons I joined CC. I want to lose all the excess weight (I've already lost half of it) then quit smoking for good while trying not to gain too much weight. I already have a quit date close to my weight loss goal date. I also have a quit plan. This time I want to leave it for good. Smoking is a terrible habit. I felt much better and healthier during the five years when I did not smoke. It is very very difficult to quit. I think losing weight is ten times easier than quitting smoking. Anybody who does not smoke should not start. Sooner or later you will either quit voluntarily, or be forced to quit by your Doctor. Quitting is not as easy as non-smokers think it should be. Thank you tuff_n_nuff. I like the idea of using exercise as opposed to food as a nicotine substitute. Once again, starting smoking does not necessarily lead to losing weight. I started again and did not lose! |

| Weight Loss | I'm stuck for 2 weeks....Help.... | May 25 2009 12:26 (UTC) |

Thank you for posting this. The same thing happened to me. I lost one kilo after the first week and have been stuck for over three weeks. For the last 10 days, I have been going down and up by half a kilo, but not quite managing to hold that loss. Don't give up! That's the most important thing. I am sure that we will both start losing again at some point. I do not care when I lose those kilos as long as I do lose them at some point. Of course it is much nicer to see a steady weight loss, but if my body does not want to do that then I'll give it time to understand that the extra weight is going off, no matter what! I am going to try the boost as well next weekend. Thank you both again. |

Thank you Karole and nice meeting you and Alex. Hmmm...Jordan is a small country in the Middle East with a population of less than 6 million. Amman, where I live, is the capital and largest city. Jordan is different from its neighbors because it has no oil. Syria on the North, Iraq on the East and Saudi Arabia in the South all have oil, but we don't. We share our western border with Palestine and Israel. We are at GMT+2. The time difference between Jordan and the East coast is 7 hours. We are 10 hours ahead of the West coast. My sister lives in LA so when I call her it is either in the evening or early in the morning. You asked about the weather. It is hot and dry, though not as hot as the Gulf countries. It does get to over 40 C (100 F) later in the summer but only for a few days. The heat makes exercise a challenge as it is not comfortable to walk during the day. I usually walk at dusk, or try to do some other exercise that does not involve going outside. It is usually cooler in the evenings. I am panicking about tomorrow's weigh-in because I have been stuck between 165 and 164 for ages. I exercised very energetically for half an hour this morning so I hope that will help to tip the scale back to 164 tomorrow. But I also discovered that I had eaten less than 400 calories by late afternoon so I had to have a big dinner, which may tip it back the other way Wow...an 8 hour motorcycle ride sounds really energetic...and fun! The last time I was on a motorcycle was when I was in my twenties. Very few people here ride them because it is extremely difficult, near impossible, to get a license. Enjoy the rest of the weekend! Hi, May I join? My name is Sireen and I am 49. I started dieting on April 2nd when I weighed 180. I joined CC 3 weeks ago. I am trying to reach 148 by end of August. 160 by July 4th sounds great if I can achieve it. The first few pounds dropped off quickly but now my weight loss is very slow. I am hoping that this challenge and weekly weigh in will motivate me to exercise harder! I really hate exercise but am trying to change that attitude. I live in Amman, Jordan. I have been married for 9 years and do not have any children. I retired early 18 months ago after a long career in IT. I spend most of my time these days playing and teaching bridge. I love traveling. I visited San Francisco in the late 90's. The Bay Area is beautiful. Here is my weight chart:

Welcome to CC. I am new here as well and started by entering the information needed for CC to calculate how much I burn and how much I should eat. Next, I started logging my food and trying to stick to my calorie limit. After a few days, I started logging exercise and activities. All along I was browsing the site to learn more about healthy ways to lose weight. This site has loads of useful information. Good luck with achieving your goal Sireen |

I eat a lot of yogurt. Here are a few ideas: Cucumber and Yogurt Salad: Diced cucumber in yogurt. Flavor with dried mint sprinkled on top. You can add garlic if you like the taste. Grilled Aubergine with yogurt. You can also add grilled tomato. I add chopped fresh parsley as well. Cooked rice and yogurt. Use brown rice if you want it to be more healthy. It tastes good with honey if you prefer sweet to savory. I also cook courgettes then add yogurt. Again, you can add cooked tomato. I make hummus 'light' by mixing it with lots of yogurt.

I use it with fresh lemon as a salad dressing (you can add olive oil but I don't and it still tastes good). I cook many vegetables with it. Spinach, Chick Peas with some lemon, apple cider vinegar and hibiscus as a spice is great. I also cook okra and tomatoes with apple cider vinegar. I tried adding it to pasta with fresh tomato sauce and it goes well with that too.
