Weight Loss Is sugar okay once in awhile if you stay in your calorie range? Nov 29 2009

Sugar doesn't cause weight gain, calories do :) Heck, I eat chocolate every day, and often other sweets as well - but I don't gain, because I stay within my calorie limits.

mmmm that sounds good!

I don't know if it would do me very well for breakfast though. Whilst its a good amount of calories, the white rice and sugar might leave me hungry again pretty soon after. Perhaps a small lunch/dinner with this for dessert would work well too, yummy!

It's really satisfying for me, this might be because of the fat and protein content from the cream and milk. However, the cool thing about this rice pudding is that you can make dozens of variations from it. For example, you can add protein powder, powdered milk, berries, chopped almonds, peanut butter, orange flavor/zest, strawberry jam, honey or whatever you like to make it a balanced breakfast.

I'm thinking about using sugar and cocoa powder, that'd be a nice chocolate rice pudding ... :)

Health & Support healthy weight, healthy diet: no period Aug 11 2009

I have the same "problem". My periods are irregular or take a break from time to time since I have had them. However, since I'm healthy (healthy weight, some activity, healthy diet), I'm not really worrying about it. My doctor told me everything was fine; plus my mother rarely ever had her period until she turned 24! Sometimes it's just the way it is, without anyhing serious going on.

You might have anemia, though. It's very common in young women; more common than low estrogen. have you tried taking an iron supplement for about 1-2 weeks?

If you stop the intensive muscle training, and eat at (or below?) maintenance, your body will likely use the muscle for energy.

Weight Loss Butter? Jul 17 2009

whatever calorie limit you are in, just make sure you meet a minimum and go below a maximum. you don't gain weight from bread and butter, you gain weight from calories,

then, you are not "on a diet", you are "eating a healthy balanced diet for the rest of your life"

and butter is okay in moderation. not as good as some other foods like olive oil, but it's been around for centuries and well known to human; if you really want butter, go for it :)

The Lounge Evolution or Creationism? Which do you believe, and why? Jul 15 2009

I didn't know evolution could be a matter of belief.

Now I can accept that for some people, evolution is a matter of belief - someone can believe that God created humans like 5,000 years ago; but it is the same kind of belief like that the earth is the center of the universe; or that the earth is flat like a plate; or that bloodletting helps against disease; or that fairies exists in the swamps of Wales.

I don't necessarily agree with what people believe, but I can accept it just fine. People have, throughout history, always believed., and always will do so, no matter what science says.

when I was an exchange student in the USA I experienced exactly the same phenomenon. in retrospect I'm sure it came from the fiber rich diet of my host family.

I was never used to large amounts of fiber, but back then in the US we'd regularly eat beans, whole grains, veggies, dried fruit, and a LOT of raisin bran cereal.

no wonder I was gassy all the time! haha

but I gotta admit, the food was frickin delicious. :)

Young Calorie Counters Those darn stick girls... Jul 13 2009

P.S. A note about those stick skinny girls who apparently can eat all they want:

It's not unusual for many kids and teenagers to have very efficient/fast metabolisms, and combined with exercise, it's no wonder when they stay thin.

However, as we stop growing, for most of us the metabolism slows down slightly. I am 20 years old now and find it a lot easier to gain weight now than when I was 15 and ate a lot without ever getting into the overweight range.

Great! :) Being physically fit is the best feeling, in my humble opinion. I'm currently trying to gain muscle too and even though I've been doing training/weight lifting for only 2 weeks I feel a bit stronger already.

wow, I cannot relate at all.  I usually wake up to my stomach grumbling and it takes all my willpower to shower before I eat!!

Same here! :D I'm very hungry for breakfast and it's actually my most calorie-rich meal of the day. currently I'm eating about 500~800 cal for breakfast. Sounds like a lot, I know. but it makes me feel quite sated (?) throughout the day and I can easily manage with smaller lunches, snacks and dinners.

if you are freaking out about 1,000 calories daily you may indeed have an eating disorder.

I suggest that you talk to a doctor about it.

It also could be iron deficiency which is very common and not harmful, so don't panic. :) I once lost my period for a whopping 4 months (when I had a BMI of 21), then I took iron supplements and ta-da, it magically returned.

My period has never been regular though, and I'm already 20. It may also be partly due to genetics. My mother is healthy but almost never had her period until she was 24.

Weight Loss How does everyone feel about carbonated water Jul 08 2009
10:45 (UTC)

Since carbonated (sparkling) water has been around in the house since I was a baby, I've always taken it for granted, and it was the one thing I drank (and still drink) all my life... When I was an exchange student in the USA I had a hard time finding sparkling water and missed it a lot...

I guess since I'v always been drinking it it doesn't cause any problems; at least I've never felt bloated from it.

Weight Gain Problem with weight gain. Jul 05 2009

Try weight lifting and strength training, it'll make you slowly gain weight in form of muscle mass (which you might need for football :) )

And watch your calorie intake, to gain muscle you need more calories than you burn, on a regular basis. You can take advantage of the Burn Meter tool here at Calorie Count to find out how much you burn on a day, and then eat some more calories than that.

Fitness Embarrassingly weak... Jul 03 2009

Welcome to the club! I'm also really weak (5'6" 121 lbs) but I'm doing something about it. I exercise regularly (strength training and weight lifting every second day, and some cardio in between days), and eat healthy food, trying to get to 2000-2300 calories daily. And it feels quite good! Even though I've been doing this routine for only a few days, I feel a bit stronger already.

And considering that 1200 calories is the mininum for your body to function properly, it's no wonder that you have no strength. Go fill up on rich, yummy, healthy foods. :)

and keep increasing the weight every week for every exercise..  do squats, deadlifts, bench press, overhead press, curls, tricep pulldowns, pullups/chinups, push ups, crunches

Thank you for your reply! :) I can't exercises with special equipment, since there's no gym nearby and I couldn't afford it anyways, but I use dumbbells and the exercises I do work all body parts/muscles, and I really feel my muscles so it'll probably work. Since I am a total beginner and not strong at all, I think I shouldn't add extra intensity after only a week? From what I understand, I should do that when I have gained some muscle and/or the routine gets (too) easy.

I will definitely take in more calories. Thanks for your advice! :)

Health & Support At what age does a girl's bust and hips stop growing? Jul 02 2009
18:36 (UTC)

I'm surprised you would worry about wide hips. The only problem with them is to find pants that really fit. But this problem is quite small considering that wide hips (especially in combination with generous boobage) give you an "evolutionary advantage" by attracting the attention of guys. Plus, they make your waist appear smaller :D

So, if you're growing into a "pear" shape, you are lucky =)

Weight Loss Any tips on getting rid of cellulite? Jun 30 2009
10:38 (UTC)
1

I wouldn't expect too much. There are plenty of skinny people who have cellulite (I have it too, at 5'6", 120lbs). I remember having read somewhere that it's usually only women who have cellulite; and the reason for this is, according to biology, that the fat in the thighs is distributed in a way that allows the body to grab an energy source quickly. It made survival easier.

Weight Loss Not possible for some to be a size 0? Jun 26 2009
10:12 (UTC)

Most people fit in a size 0 only until they're ten or twelve years old. It's basically a child size, since even very thin adult people cannot fit in, due to having larger skeletons/bones than a child.

Of course I can only speculate since we don't have a size 0 in Europe - I'm guessing it's something smaller than size XS in Germany.

For building muscle, I guess the extra calories should ideally come from protein, right?

Thank you for your reply :) So  body fat can't be calculated remotely, that makes sense!

I've had a 19-20 BMI for years, and I eat well, walk and bicycle a lot and feel good, but I've never done any strength training. Looks like it's time to get muscle! I'll look up some info on that. =]

Today I'll make a minestrone for lunch (with frozen veggies and dried mushrooms), and those peaches still need to be eaten. :)

Health & Support I'd love to know how to completely stop my period. Jun 09 2009

I don't know if it's for you, but you could try cutting calories. Once when I ate 200 calories less than I needed on average a week (1,600 instead of 1,800), my period stopped. But do that only if you don't have many to cut out and still can eat to feel full, and don't go below a minimum number of calories daily. You can still be healthy this way.

But then, my periods have been weird and irregular or even nonexistent (due to iron deficiency) since I can remember, and I've had physical examinations, but I feel good and healthy.

At around 18-25 years, most people stop growing. But you're quite tall already at six feet :)

As for gaining weight, you could try building muscle (for example by weight lifting) in addition to eating some extra calories. Muscle weighs more than fat and looks (is) healthier.
