Hill sprint will increase your anaerobic (without oxygen) and aerobic (to some extent) threshold. Your glutes and hamstrings will love you! I personally think most people benefit from a well rounded training program that includes some steady state cardio (like joggin) and some interval training (like hill sprints). Tabata sessions are awesome. LOVE them! |

| Fitness | I hate lifting | Aug 03 2009 16:50 (UTC) |

I love lifting. At least I love how it has changed my body. Lifting is great because unlike running you can actually sculpt your body. Within it's genetic limits of course. I've always been (and will be) a pear shape but because of lifting I'm much less of a pear shape. I'm hoping to eventually not look like a pear at all even though I'd still be one if I quit lifting and gained all my weight back. I also love feeling strong and love what it does for my body. If you absolutely hate it and don't think you can learn to like it then you may want to give pilates a try. Oh yeah another thing to make lifting fun is to set little challenges for yourself. Like performing so many sets within a set amount of time. Or timing your workouts and then trying to beat that time the following week. Of course, you'll want to make sure you are comfortable with the exercises and have good form before you try this. |

Good information on eggs. For me I limit yolks because of calories. I like to get 20-30% of my calories from fat but I don't want it all to be from egg yolks. Did someone say peanut butter??? |

| Weight Loss | I am about to give up!!! can someone please help me???? this weight-loss thing is seriously depressing me | Aug 03 2009 16:30 (UTC) |

Like others said a lot of it is probably water retention due to the high sodium foods you've eaten lately. To be very honest I think you should focus on healthy eating habits before you start worrying about calories. You didn't reach your current weight eating veggies, fruit, lean protein....ect. Focus on developing a healthy relationship with food. You said you being stressed out contributed to your poor food choices. Work on making good choices even when you are stressed. Work on making good choices even when everyone else around you is eating crap. Work on NOT skipping meals. (That always causes me to slip up!!) Work on forgiving yourself when you do slip up. You DON'T have to be perfect. Perfection is the enemy of success but you DO have to be CONSISTENT. Count your food choice. 90% of them should be natural real food. I bet if this is the case you will be around your calorie goal anyway (which btw I think is too low for your current weight) If you want to count calories I think you should eat around 2000 until you reach a plateau. Just my opinion tho. Losing weight is hard for EVERYONE. Most people I know (including myself) would rather eat pizza and chinese and everyday we have to choose the right foods to reach our goals!!!! Good luck to you!!! YOU CAN DO THIS!!!!! |

| Weight Loss | Is it normal to show a weight gain after working out? | Aug 03 2009 16:17 (UTC) |
|
Your body could be retaining water for numerous reasons. Make sure you are eating mostly whole natural foods without adding a ton of salt (You can add some, I'm talking excessive shaking of the shaker!). Doing this and drinking A LOT of water (I drink a gallon) at least 12 cups should help you to release the water you many be holding. It could also be the glycogen in your muscles if you are lifting. Once again drinking a lot of water will help. You need water to lose water. I wouldn't go over a gallon though unless it's really hot out and you are sweating like crazy. If you are eating right, exercising, and your clothes are getting tighter then I'd stay off the scale! :) Easier said than done...I know!! :) |

You can totally learn to do it yourself and with practice they are the most accurate and affordable way to determine body fat at home by yourself. I wrote a blog post on it here. There are links to great site that do the calculations for you. I use accu-measure too! Last I looked they are 5.99 on Amazon. |

| Fitness | I'm a girl and I don't want to become buff... | Jul 28 2009 17:07 (UTC) |

You don't look boyish at all to me and you look like you have a long way to go before looking "buff". (I don't mean that mean at all!) Of course buff means different things to different people!! If you are happy with your current strength then stop adding weight. Challenge yourself by trying new exercises. Consider yourself lucky to be able to add muscle easily. I've been trying to bulk up my arms and shoulders for over a year and the progress is slow. Most woman simply cannot bulk up due to genetics/hormones. BTW you don't look like a man. You are freakin' gorgeous! |

Waste of money. They don't really burn fat. They give you more energy to push harder. If you need an extra boost drink coffee before you workout. |

| Weight Loss | How to stop exercising without gaining weight? | Jul 28 2009 16:43 (UTC) |

I wouldn't drop it completely. If you're sick of it find something else. You don't HAVE to exercise to not gain weight. Of course exercise GOOD for you and I think EVERYONE should do it b/c our bodies were designed to move. But the truth of it is you could lose weight or maintain through diet alone. All you need is to eat what you burn or eat less than you burn. |

Like others said you can't spot reduce. To see ab muscles you have to get to a low BF%. Some people build abs easier than others. People are always asking me about my abs. My response is that, "abs are made in the kitchen." I rarely train my abs specifically although I'm a big fan of planks. Crunches in my opinion are a 2nd rate exercise. I do a lot of compound lifts b/c they engage the core as well and generally give you more bang for your buck. Here's a blog post on compound exercises. Also you may want to check out Crossfit. I've done a few of their workouts and they are great. A lof of MMA people like cross fit. They post daily workouts and have a huge library of demos. Good luck! |

| Weight Loss | Eating carbs | Jul 23 2009 22:21 (UTC) |
|
The article was right your body doesn't need carbs to function. It will (burn) fat for energy and when that's gone your muscle until there is nothing left to covert and you die of starvation. That said, the question is what should you eat to make it function most efficiently? I think it's fine to lower carbs a little on non-lifting days as long as you feel good but if you feel better with the same or more carbs on non-lifting days then go ahead and eat them and DON'T feel guilty!!!

| Weight Loss | cutting carbs? | Jul 23 2009 22:13 (UTC) |

I've ate like you mentioned when I was cutting for a show. It works but will you be able to sustain it??? If so as long as you are eating enough I don't think there is anything inherently unhealthy about this but most people just can't make it a lifestyle. Something that works for me is to keep to find a place in the middle. I eat whole grains with 2-3 of my 5- meals usually early in the day but not always. I rarely eat just meat and almost always try to eat a bunch of veggies. As long as you are eating enough you should preserve muscle. Your body will burn fat as long as there is fat to burn before it will burn muscle. Make sure you eat pre and post workout so your body isn't forced into muscle burning mode. I'm skeptical about glutamine. I've taken it but more for muscle recovery. |

| Foods | Carbs are the enemy in your mind - not in your body! | Jul 22 2009 17:28 (UTC) |
|
Low carb is not a fad. People ate lower carb for thousands of years before the mass production of food. I eat get 40-50% calories from carbs mostly from fruit and vegetables. Unfortunately most grains you find on the grocery store shelves are refined and of very low quality. Therein lies the biggest problem...all the processed carbs people are eating. |

| Weight Loss | Too little fat? | Jul 22 2009 17:12 (UTC) |

IMO you need more fat and more protein. :) You need all types of fat except trans fats... avoid those. If I were you I'd eat a little less carbs, more protein and more fat. I'm NOT saying go low carb but a little lower carb will make room for more fats (and protein if you so desire.) Good luck!!! |

| Fitness | reached goal weight, but not goal body fat % | Jul 14 2009 17:00 (UTC) |

Congrats on reaching your goal!!!! To keep burning fat you will need to keep a calorie deficit. I hope your exercise routine includes weight training that will really help you lower your BF%. If you haven't already give HIIT cardio a try. Keep eating protein to help preserve your muscle. Post workout meals are really important for this. I usually eat protein and carb after working out. |

| Fitness | Gwenyth Paltrow's trainer says not to lift heavy?? | Jul 14 2009 16:55 (UTC) |
39 |
I lift heavy and most people wouldn't call my arms bulking. They are 10" around at my bicep. Nothing higher than 3 pounds is ridiculous in my opinion. Most women have a hard time building muscle and it's nearly impossible for most women to bulk up. I did say most some have the genetics/hormones to do so. That said I don't think women have to lift like bodybuilders to get great results. The key is to constantly challenge your body. |

| Foods | peanut oil - HIGH calories!? | Jul 01 2009 06:02 (UTC) |

With the exception of coconut oil. Contrary to what some say it's very good for you even though it's mostly saturated. I cook with oil all the time. You NEED fat to burn fat about a teaspoon per meal. |

| Weight Loss | I want to lose 10 pounds. Any help??? | Jul 01 2009 06:00 (UTC) |

Lift weights. My guess is that you are thin without a lot of muscle. Muscle is smaller and more dense than fat so it weighs more but looks better. Start lifting a few days a week and stay off the scale. Give yourself 6-8 weeks and see if you like the changes. |

Oatmeal is a great breakfast. I eat mine with just cinnamon. Eggs rock the house imo. (that was sort of dorky..hehe!!) 1/2 a whole grain bagel with peanut butter isn't a bad choice. Or cottage cheese with fruit. |

| Fitness | Body Fat Percentage Questions | Jun 26 2009 02:36 (UTC) |

Yes the water testing is the most accurate. I use calipers and have found them to be the most affordable and accurate way to measure progress myself. Forget those stupid electric current things like Omron. I had a very expensive Omron thing and took it back b/c it SUCKED. Here is one of my blog posts about taking BF% measurements. There are some really helpful links to sites to figure the calculations for you. I prefer taking my measurements 3x and averaging them. Calipers are cheap they just take some practice. :) |
