| Weight Loss | 1200 not necessarily "magic number"? | Jun 13 2009 18:07 (UTC) |

You're right that you have to have a deficit of 3500 calories a week to lose a 1 lb, but that deficit should not come solely from food intake, it should include calories burned through exercise. I still wouldn't eat less than 1200 calories per week, I would find a way to burn AT LEAST that extra 100 per day through exercise. 100 calories burned isn't much, 30 minutes of moderately paced walking would do the trick. |

Fresh squeezed vegetable juice was a surprise. A friend lent me her juicer and I just made beet, carrot, apple, ginger juice with some lemon. Very very good! And so good for you. |

I get Nature's Life and Jay Robb because they both come in individual packets, this affords me the flexibility of having different flavors instead of a giant canister of all one. I like to get the kinds that probiotics and greens in them as well. Vanilla and strawberry have both been very tasty. They are great to make smoothies with I just add them to about 1 cup of rice or almond milk and a cup of berries and blend it up. Delicious and very good for you. And less than 200 calories if I'm remembering correctly. |

Calabacitas! Many restaurants offer a kind of mix of zucchini, squash, corn and pepper with beans. I used to order this a lot when I was vegetarian. Also I would ask for vegetarian beans that are probably lower in fat than refried ones with lard. Grilled shrimp or fish are good options even if you have them in a couple of small corn tortillas. |

I actually think your mom is making some solid points. That said, losing weight is a personal decision and if you know the conversation is always going to go a certain way and you don't want to hear it anymore... than stop talking to her about it? From the conversation you shared it sounds like you're bringing it up and trying to convince her of something that you really don't need her approval on. |

Tracey Anderson (trainer to the stars) has some leg workouts available as podcasts on iTunes, and on the goop.com site that are awesome! They really work on tightening and toning the legs and butt, and they don't require any equipment or large space. They are basically an assortment of leg lift repetitions. |

| Weight Loss | Is eating fruit considered as a meal? | Apr 06 2009 18:55 (UTC) |
|
I actually think having fruit as a meal on its own is fine. My naturopath explained to me that fruit digests very quickly and so is best to eat on its own, other foods eaten with it slow this process down and cause your food to sit in your gut longer leading to gas and indigestion- something I've felt to be true. Because I'm not much of a breakfast eater (but I'm trying) I just try to eat fruit in the morning as breakfast. You don't have to just eat one piece though, have a couple or a few different things and some tea. Easy, no prep and starts your day off feeling energized, refreshed and light. |

| Foods | What salad dressing do you use? | Mar 11 2009 05:31 (UTC) |

I usually make my own dressings and just use very little of them, Bragg's brand makes a really yummy Sesame & Ginger Dressing that is the only bottled stuff I would ever eat. But here is a recipe that is practically calorie free and has lots of flavor: 1/2 cup tomato juice 2 tbsp. lemon juice 1/2 tsp. Worcestershire sauce 1/4 tsp. honey or dijon mustard 1/4 tsp. salt 1 tsp. dried minced onions

| Weight Loss | Broad shouldered women | Mar 11 2009 04:28 (UTC) |

I have broad shoulders and since gaining weight have definitely felt more self-conscience about them, but mostly because my arms are bigger and my back looks broader. It's true they are part of your frame and will never look that much smaller but with arms toned and back toned and less weight on them so they have more definition, I don't think it's so bad. I got A LOT of compliments from people when I was thinner about my shoulders and arms because they looked so strong and fit. I look forward to them being a point of pride again:) |

I've always avoided nonstick cookware, but it's saving me now. That and grapeseed and olive oil sprays. Quorn products are lower in calories then they're meat counterparts and most of their veggies ones as well, plus they are delicious!
Spicy foods (which I've always loved) help stop me from overeating and raise the metabolism a touch. Miracle noodles! Herbal or decaffeinated tea is great for when you might be hungry... but you might also be satisfied with some hot liquid. Giant spinach salads! Having a big salad for dinner really does help me from night snacking. Night snacking is a huge problem for me so if I fill up with lots of fiber for my last meal I do better. |

| Foods | What to do with radishes? | Feb 17 2009 19:45 (UTC) |

My favorite way to eat them is this salad I found on a food blog: 1 bunch watermelon radishes or one medium daikon radish
Wash
and julienne radishes. They can be peeled or not as you like. Mix
together the rest of the ingredients and dress the radishes with the
dressing. I sometimes add cucumber slices to this recipe as well, for variety. |

| Health & Support | Has anyone taken Topamax/Topiramate? | Feb 11 2009 07:36 (UTC) |

Sorry I'm coming to this post last, I just really wanted to put my two cents in since I had such a bad experience. I was on Topomax for about 5 months to try to manage my migraines, and it was really aweful. It didn't help the headaches much or suppress my appetite, though it did make things taste weird especially beverages. It was like sucking on a dirty penny. All the time. I also had a lot of trouble with word recall and vocabulary, getting lost, short temper, sleepiness. When I think back on this time, all I can remember is the discomfort, pain and irritability I felt. |

| Foods | Cheap Healthy Foods! | Feb 08 2009 21:02 (UTC) |

If you have access to a grocery store which has bulk bins, I think that would be the way to go. You can control how you much you spend by getting exactly the amount you need and not wasting money on packaging. There are many healthy items in there which you can build a meal with by just adding fruit and vegetables (also cheap!). Look for whole wheat, corn or quinoa pasta, oats, brown rice, beans, nuts, and dried fruits. Lentils are great because they're very good for you and don't have to soak, you can cook them up in about 20 minutes. You can also find spices in bulk which are always WAY cheaper, and snacks such as granola and trail mix. Hope that helps! |

| Foods | Miracle Noodle, no carbs, fat, or protein | Feb 06 2009 06:57 (UTC) |

These actually are "real food" they are shirataki noodles which are traditionally served in sukiyaki. "Miracle Noodle" is just an American marketing ploy to get dieters interested in them. Some are made with tofu some are just made from the yam root. The fishy smell from the package (in my experience) is completely removed by rinsing for the appropriate amount of time (they say a few minutes - and they mean it!). These are tasty as a replacement for ramen or rice noodles which their texture most resembles. I wouldn't probably eat them with marinara, but I really like them in lo mein or rice noodle soups. |
