I think I tried every kind of cardio out there and never really enjoyed it, making it unsustainable. What I did enjoy (swimming), I had limited access to. Then I started strength training. I love it! I also agree that, done intensely, it is effectively cardio too. It has lasting effects beyond the time you set aside for it, making it more efficient than formal cardio. I try to be "otherwise active" and commit my exercise time to mostly strength training.

I've gotten alot of my equipment from garage sales. Once, I mixed up some Quikrete and poured it into water bottles to make hand weights. It would have worked better with a gallon of milk though. Also, make a request on freecycle or craigslist.

I'm 5-0, 120, 28.5 waist, 35 hip. You're a little smaller than me but our proportions are similar. I wear a size 4 women's, but my perfect size is a 14 plus girl. Girl's sizes tend to be shorter with wider waists. They fit me much better. Maybe a 12 or 12 plus for you?

BTW, I remember being so proud of finally growing out of girl's sizes as a teenager. Now, I'm proud to be back in them again.

W3D1 down. Maxed at 20 and BARELY got there.

I may start running into more difficulty because my dh got me  a barbell and I'm stating a new weight training routine this week. I'm planning to do my pu's first while I'm fresh though. We'll see...

I did 39 pu's on my test. Not much improvement over my inital test but my back was already aching a little beforehand. I guess that's why, anyway. I'm a little disappointed but I think I might have done better on a different day. Oh, well, on to week 3.....

I did W2D3, maxed at 22. It was really rough at the end for me. I'm planning to take it easy  tomorrow, then do the exhaustion test in the late afternoon. I'm curious how far I can go without doing a bunch of sets ahead of time. Should be interesting.

Keep on, keepin' on, everyone!! Sounds like all of you are making good progress. :)

Well said, crimson.

Shane, I hope those bars work for you. It sounds like it may be a more comfortable way of doing push-ups for anyone, injury or not.

I did W2D2, maxed at 25. It was pretty hard today. It didn't so much exhaust me, but was tough from beginning to end. Funny how each day is different...

15 is the biggest dumbbell I've got! LOL I'm trying to get my dh to get me a barbell for Christmas to rectify that problem. We'll see...

I did W2D1 today, maxed at 18. This time, it kicked my butt! There was only a 60 second recovery. I probably shouldn't have vaccumed in-between. So much for multi-tasking! Seriously, I'm not going to be doing that again. Focus, focus...

Day 3 complete! I maxed at 30 this time. What a shock! I didn't expect to be able to make progress this quickly. Strangely, I feel energized afterward, but my arms are a little achy.

I'll be on a M-W-F schedule next week and I'll stay in column 3.

Good luck, everyone!

Weight Loss Does anyone calorie count in their head? Nov 13 2009

Yep! I've always done this and it's worked for me. But, I'm weird about numbers anyway. I memorize them very easily-ss#'s, phone numbers, house numbers... I can even do long division/multiplication, GCF, LCM, decimals, percentages, fractions, all in my noggin. Hubby calls me a human calculator. I think of it as my stupid human trick. But, it's very handy for counting calories!

Weight Loss What's your diet secret? Nov 13 2009

I think of my "diet' as inclusive, not exclusive. Nothing is taboo-not cake, ice cream, candy. I'm just including more fruits, veggies, whole grains, and lean protein. Keeping within my cal allotments, means my diet is 85% wholesome. It's my Jedi mind-trick. :)

And I chew gum to prevent boredom eating, sugar cravings, and it's hard to graze when you have something sticky in your mouth.

Day 2 done! Not as shaky this time and I maxed at 18. The 90 second pauses kill! About halfway through I decided to tidy the house while I counted to 90. HA! Two birds killed with one stone. I imagine I won't have the strength to do that later though.Sealed

I've been on these boards for about 6 months now. The ones who seem to stick around AND have the best results seem to be the ones promoting and living the healthiest lifestyles. They make convincing arguments to those who are on the fence that weight loss can be achieved by healthy means, within healthy calorie parameters. I would say the prevailing attitude here is health over thinness.

Other sites I've been to encourage weight loss at all costs.

This is the most I've ever lost-40lbs- and I'm now in maintenence mode. It has been very important to me to be  a good role model for my children, especially my daughters,  on how I go about achieving weight loss. My weight is good. My health is good. I am strong. These are good messages for my kids and I think they supercede anything they see on TV or read in a book or magazine.

I've chosen a healthy route this time and I'm very pleased with the results.

Welcome, c4giants! I also do better with specific goals. I guess I want things to be concrete. I figure we'll all be starting at different levels, and some might even start at week 3 or so. The important thing is that we encourage each other along the way.

Cool, dns! We're starting about the same level, I think. I'll tell you how it goes.

Weight Loss Lighter after a Calorie Overload? Confused . . . Nov 12 2009

Yep, increasing your cals for a short time will rev your metabolism, even reset it. Our bodies are very adaptable can adjust to receiving low calories. When you up your calories, your body is able to stop hoarding fat and extra water. I've experienced it many times during this journey.

Weight Loss How slow is slow for last 10 pounds? Nov 12 2009
15:28 (UTC)

From my experience, I have good news and bad news:

When I was ten lbs away from goal (and just inside my healthy BMI range),I plateaued BIG TIME. I tended to do this about every 10 lbs anyway. In frustration, I decided to go to maintenance and upped my calories. Bam! 5 lbs lost in 10 days.

Then, I stalled again. I've plateaued AGAIN and now I'm maintaining. It kinda sucks to not be able to lose that last 5, but, heck!, what's 5lbs anyway? I'm focusing more on shape than size now and if the last five happens to come off naturally due to more muscle and increased metabolism, well, I won't shed a tear.

I suggest going on maintenance for a week or two. Dieting can slow your metabolism even if you're not in "starvation mode". Maintenance is good practice for later and can reset your metabolism. At this point, why not?

Weight Loss I'm a size 7!!! Nov 12 2009

That's funny, starmom, because I'm 5 lbs  heavier than I was  before I had my first kid. Plus, I'm much more muscular than then (14 years ago). But, I'm a darn-near-perfect size 4 at 120 now when I was a size 6 at 115 then. So, yeah, your claims are proven by my own experience.

So, I'm a size 4 now, 120. I've decided to maintain this weight since it seems to be my body's setpoint. I'm concentrating more on shape than size now.

Once again, keep up the good efforts, everyone!

Welcome, sfrings and crimson667!

sfrings, Gosh, I wish I had been so motivated to get in shape after my pregnancies. I've also been considering the squat challenge to do on alternate days. I'll see how this goes first. Baby steps...

Crimson, P90X? You're practically a god! Funny that I look at 100 pu's and think," I  could do that", but P90X seems unsurmountable. I really want to start lifting heavy but the gym is out of the question and I have no equipment YET. That's on my Christmas list, I'm hoping dh comes through...

Nice to see the Challenge growing. Now, I'll really have to see it through if I want save my dignity (like I have any..have you seen my gallery photos?)

Anyhoo, DAY 1 is officially checked off my list. I maxed at 15. It wasn't too awfully bad, but I was a little shaky afterward.

Welcome, beaniej and dnsmills!! I was afraid I was gonna be a lonewolf on this one. :(

dns,it must have been fated for you to come across this post. LOL

beaniej, did the push-ups injure you? Or was it something else that made you have to quit?  Maybe there is something to be learned from your experience...

Also, there was a mirror propped in my garage, so I did a few pu's in front of it and my form was better than I thought. Whew!! (I'm going to keep abbreviating push-up as pu, cuz that makes me giggle.)

I posted before pics in my gallery. You can tell my weak area is my belly. *wince* Oh, well....

I did my initial test. I did 20 push-ups. Sounds good, right?  I need a mirror though, because I don't hink I'm lowering myslf as much as I should to have good form. I probably could have don a couple of more, but the form thing make me think-what's the point?

Anyway, this is a three times a week challenge, where you do a few push-ups at a time, with rest periods. (could this work as HIIT? I still have some bothersome belly fat...) Maybe, when I'm able to do shorter spurts I'll be able to concentrate more on form.

I'm kinda' antsy to get this started. I think I'll start this afternoon, so I can have the proper rest days, then switch to M-W-F next week. I need before photos! (ugh)

My rank is 3. I start in column 3, week1.

Original Post by dkiesser:

If you do it for health reasons, then you won't be disappointed if you don't "look" as good as you had wished you did. I think that as most people get older, get married, and have children they stop being concerned so much with how they look and are more concerned with how they are going to have enough energy to get through the day.
