I've seen this coming... the last two weeks have been a series of stresses and attempts to get past them, and though I have paid some attention to my plan, it hasn't been to the extent that it should have.  I may also be a bit hormonal this week...

Things seem to be getting back on track in life, so now it's time to take care of me again.

Look forward to weighing in next Thursday!

Weight Loss I need help please! Jul 11 2009
19:13 (UTC)

Hi there... if you don't mind me adding in my 2 cents worth, here I go Smile

Though it wasn't a typical week for you, the one thing I noticed is that your balance is off.

Make every effort possible to take in more protein, more complex carbs and less fat.

I am certainly not perfect at it, but I try to keep my %'s at:

Carbs: 40-45%
Protein: 30-35%
Fat: 20-25%

This time of year, complex carbs are much easier to find in the form of fresh fruits and veggies, so it's not such a struggle to keep the fats down.

I wish you well on your journey,

kaseysmommy

I like Luna Bars for quick breakfasts.  Some will balk at the sugar content, but the sugars are from sources such as brown rice syrup and cane juice, so I am not as concerned as if it were just white sugar or HFCS.  These range in calories from 180-190 each and have 8 or 9 grams of protein in each bar.

I add a piece of fruit and my coffee with creamer and that's my 220-240 calorie breakfast.

It works for me... hope you can find something that works for you!

  • What is your food weakness?  Mexican foods
  • Tell us what you do when the craving hits. Share your special tips to avoid eating that desired food. I don't have uncontrollable cravings right now.  I think that I am lucky in that when I decide that I am going to change my eating back to healthy, I just make the choice not to indulge AS MUCH as I would have.  The easiest way for me to stay on track is to not make anything off limits.  So, when I'm craving Mexican foods, I just make sure that my calorie intake allows for it.
  • Now pledge to all your Schmoozers that you will not eat this food for at least one  week:  "I   kaseysmommy  do hereby promise not to eat   Mexican Foods  for ___1___ week(s) until July__15___, 2009.

Weight Loss I have a twofold question Jun 25 2009
21:22 (UTC)

I ran an analysis on the amount of sodium per day in my diet for the last 7 days and it averages just over 2800mg.  That's a bit more than the RDA recommended 2400, but not ridiculous, right?

I am going to go see my doctor soon for some other stuff, so I'll ask him about the edema.

Thanks for your reply coreyander!

Foods Food Network Show Jun 17 2009
20:15 (UTC)

I love Guy Fieri and watch anything he does... my hubby and I have even visited a few of the Triple D stops he has made in the Phoenix area... and were happy that we made the trek.

I also enjoy Alton Brown, Good Eats, and his commentary on Iron Chef.  He's pretty funny and cute too Wink  (luv ya, honey Kiss)

I used to like to watch Paula Deen, but her recipes are so far out of the realm of possibility in my world, that I just don't anymore.

Have dabbled in a few of the other shows, but nothing stuck.  So, I guess that's it.

(Edited) OH, YES!  I used to like Tyler Florence's Food 911... I think that's what it was called... where he would come to the person's house and show them how to prepare their faves.  I miss that one.

a little high on fats (we should shoot for no more than 30% of our diet from fat), but definitely way out of proportion on the carb/proteins... can you up the proteins with lowfat such at chicken/fish/turkey and lower the carbs?  That might help you get past that part of the day that you are suffering so much.

how long between when you last ate and dinner?  You really shouldn't let your body go more than 3 hours without eating something.  How about some yogurt or some fat free pudding or something that has a bit of protein (dairy), or an ounce of raw almonds or pecans?  you can eat these thing without killing yourself in calories...  That's a really hard time for me, too... so, I try to have some kind of a low cal snack that will tide me over...

but...that kind of hunger says to me that you may be dealing with low blood sugar or something more serious than just the "gotta wait for dinner to eat" blues.  You might want to rework your day so that you are eating a little less each time, but more often throughout the day... is that something you can do?

Just throwing my 2 cents in.

I would assume it to be about 5-6 ounces of grilled chicken... so I would add that with the steamed broccoli to my food log along with some added fat, as there is most likely some kind added in the cooking process.

Hope that helps.

Health & Support what is normal low blood pressure? 80/50? Jun 05 2009

I have been battling anemia myself.  My blood pressure hasn't been affected at all, but I have always had near normal blood pressure.  The things that I have noticed (and the main reason I went to see my doctor last summer) was the unrelenting exhaustion.  I started to blame it on the fact that I was fat and had a young child to chase around, but the fact was I knew it was more than that.

My family practitioner told me that exhaustion and lightheadedness can be caused by anemia, so we did a blood test and found not only was I anemic but my iron stores were crazy low.  So I have been taking insane amounts of Iron for about 6 months.  I'm getting better, but it has taken a long time.  My initial H&H was 8.1 and it has improved to the last reading being 12.6.  (Normal H&H for women is 12.0-15.2 gm/dL.

Enough babbling... my point is, that your symptoms may be more related to your anemia than the low blood pressure reading, IMHO.

Systolic blood pressure (SBP) is the pressure when the heart beats.  The lower number in a blood pressure reading is called the diastolic blood pressure (DBP) and is the pressure between beats.  Normal blood pressure is defined as SBP below 120 mm Hg and DBP below 80 mm Hg.  High blood pressure is defined as blood pressure of 140/90 mm Hg or greater.

http://www.americanheart.org/presenter.jhtml? identifier=3019847

So... by that logic.. if my BP was 10/5 I'd be healthy? (unconscious, but healthy?) LOL

My sister's has been very low too and docs never say anything. I just KNOW there has to be a cut off? right?

My mom's blood pressure is chronically low, but never to the point of her being disoriented or losing conciousness.  I think that doctors worry much more about high blood pressure because of the end organ damage that can happen silently.

I also know that low blood pressure can be related to dehydration.  Are you getting enough to drink?

Health & Support How do I get my child to eat more? May 31 2009
02:59 (UTC)

I'm not sure how you get that I don't empower my child out of that one sentence...

My son knows that he can ask for whatever he wants to eat, and when it is appropriate for him to have chocolate or processed food, that is what he eats.

When it's not, then he is given choices of a more appropriate type such as fresh fruit or vegetables, yogurt or lowfat string cheese, etc.

It's pretty sad to see that parenting has become a contest.  How I parent my child is how I parent my child, as imperfectly as that might be.  He is, however, healthy, happy and well adjusted (the pediatrician's description, not mine).

Oh, and just so you can make even more uneducated assumptions about me, I vaccinated my child AND I only breastfed him for a month.

My son is very picky as well... and while I won't profess to be as perfect as some of the others who have replied to you, it seems like the options that you are offering her don't quite mesh with your hope for a better diet for her.

We introduced fruits and veggies as snack options very early on.  He asks for processed foods and chocolate, but he only gets those things on occasion.  The way I have tried to keep this going is to always have easy to eat or prepare fruits and veggies on hand and not a great deal of things that really none of us in our family really need.

What about oatmeal?  It is easy to fix in the microwave so no cooking on the stovetop without supervision.  Or Cheerios or some other flavor of unsweetened cereal?  How about yogurt cups?  If you limit the kinds of foods that are available in your home, you might be surprised at what she will eat.

I hope that your daughter isn't being influenced by her school friends or other kids too much.  I know that the girls in our neighborhood are much more aware of body image and weight than I ever was at 10 years old.

Just my humble opinion here...

I happened upon this today at:

http://nutrition.about.com/od/askyournutritio nist/f/macronutrients.htm

The United States Department of Agriculture suggests that approximately 50% of your calories should come from carbohydrates, about 30% from fats, and approximately 20% from protein sources

For a most balanced diet you should get 40% carbs, 30% proteins and 30% fats.  That's why my dietitian told me anyway.

Since fats are 9kcal per gram (where carbs and protein are only 4 kcal per gram) I tend to err on the side of less than more, but still ensure that I am getting fat in my diet since it is necessary for many functions that your body performs "behind the scenes".

Just my 2 cents worth.
