I got mine at Target - they are Champion brand.  Very comfortable and breathable.  They are one of my favorite pair for running.  Mine have a small pocket at the back (right on top of my butt :)) for my keys and ID.

I have seen these (or something similar) at any sporting goods stores, as well.  Have you tried Sports Authority?

Original Post by cellophane_star:

Kale is one of the most nutritious foods you can eat. I sautee a leek (white part only) in olive oil, add some garlic, then add kale with a squeeze of lemon juice. Let the kale wilt down (but still bright green) and at a pinch of nutmeg & pepper.

I use this method as well - except I will sometimes vary the nutmeg & pepper for crushed red pepper flakes.  I have also used chinese five spice on them and toasted sesame seeds at the end.  Delicious when sauteed with shiitake mushrooms.

My favorites are mustard, turnip, and broccoli rabe.  I also really like lightly wilted escarole with a little red wine or balsamic vinegar and crushed red pepper flakes (or hot chillies chopped very small).  Last time I had greens it was at my mother's house, and she tossed them with thin brown rice spaghetti - it was delicious.

Foods Barley Question Nov 23 2009

Actually, not all barley is whole grain.  Most commercial varieties are what is called "pearled" barley, which is a process that removes the bran.

So if you are looking for the health benefits, you should make sure that what you are getting is the darker looking one, rather than the more polished, "pearl" barley.  You can find out more here

Fitness morning workouts, how do YOU feel? Nov 21 2009

I love working out in the mornings.   I have become a morning person because of it.  I actually look forward to waking up in the morning!  Of course, I also go to bed early enough that I get a good 8-9 hours of sleep, so I am not dragging when it's time to wake up.

I am a runner, and for me the mornings are so peaceful - almost like meditation.  It makes for a great start to my day and it gives me incredible energy.  It's my favorite time of the day!

Maintaining Holiday Coping Nov 20 2009
11:38 (UTC)

I'm running a Turkey Trot as well as another race on December 12. So I plan to run/train through the holidays.

I am coordinating a large event for next weekend, so I have been/will continue to walk for at least 1 hour a day, putting up promotional flyers.

Like ultramarathongirl, I will not waste calories on food I can have any day, or that I don't care much about (like bread, or stuffing - yuck).

I will choose a little bit of each of the things I want to indulge on, then follow the "law of diminishing returns": have a bite, savor it, and really ask myself if I want another bite.

As usual, I will fill up my plate with mostly veggies and a good bit of protein (Turkey).  I will prepare a balanced plate, and not go for seconds (unless I'm still really hungry).

I will not eat past the point of comfort.

I will drink plenty of water and keep myself well-hydrated.

I will not count calories (I am trying to practice "intuitive eating") and forgive myself if I don't fulfill all my goals.

Health & Support Edema Nov 20 2009

You are making your edema worse by taking diuretics.  That's why you're waking up so puffy - the rebound water retention from diuretic use.  Just drink plenty of water, watch your sodium, make sure you're getting enough potassium and protein, exercise to "sweat it out" some, and give it time.  Your body will balance out on its own.

Yes, in the United States, regardless of the parent's immigration status, the child is a citizen if they are born on US soil.  Hence why the issues with immigration and families where 1/2 are undocumented (parents) and 1/2 are not (children) are so prevalent.

ETA: "United States" for nationality purposes, extends to all the US territories, including Guam, Puerto Rico, USVI - who all obtain US citizenship at birth just as those born on the continental US.

Weight Loss Not hungry after exercise Nov 19 2009

I'm usually a morning exerciser and find that I often lose my appetite after working out - although I'm usually hungry enough for a late lunch around 1 pm.  However, if I've had to work out in the afternoon, that will usually mean I'm not hungry for dinner.  So when that happens, I eat a piece of chocolate.  Works like a charm!   It gets my appetite going immediately (for more chocolate!)  The thing I do is, rather than eat more chocolate, I eat dinner :)

Foods Main dish for dinner guests? Need ideas please Nov 18 2009

How about roasting some pork tenderloin?  You could buy those that come already seasoned, or season it yourself with your favorite herbs (I prefer thyme & rosemary - with some lemon juice sprinkled at the table).  If you broil it in the oven, you'll have a delicious main dish in less than 20 minutes!

ETA: You can also take chicken breasts, split them in 1/2 (to make two thinner pieces), season them with salt & pepper and coat them lightly with breadcrumbs.  Then, roast them in the oven for about 15 minutes until they are lightly browned and cooked through but still juicy.

These two main dishes are my quick stand-by dinner for when I don't want to be spending a lot of time in the kitchen :)

Health & Support Anemia and weight loss Nov 16 2009

I have had issues with low iron levels (borderline anemia) due to heavy periods, coupled with running.

My first thought is that as long as your mild deficit didn't compromise your nutrition (meaning, that cutting calories didn't imply cutting protein and fat so much that it would affect the nutrients you're getting) then it would be OK.

However, if you're low on energy, and your mild deficit causes your energy to be further compromised, then I would suspect that you might need to keep your intake at maintenance to feel better, at least for now.

Typically, whenever I feel 'off' I focus on feeling better, mostly through making sure my nutrition is optimal and that I am getting plenty of rest.  Mind you I am not trying to lose weight, but I don't worry about my calories and if there is a gain, either.  I think your focus should be on getting back to your old self.

I hope you feel better soon, and wish you the best of luck on your tests!

Health & Support what is underweight to you? Nov 15 2009

I believe that, as long as you are not overexercising and/or undereating, and maintaining a BMI of 18.5 "naturally", then that is fine.

However - and this is a BIG caveat - most people that fall under that BMI classification do so because their energy balance is off in some way: they are either exercising vigorously, or eating less than they should for their activity level, whether deliberately or not...

In my opinion, there are few cases where a low BMI is not "artificial" and, therefore, healthy.

Weight Gain In the house and hungry Nov 15 2009

I don't know much about weight gain, but I think it might be a good accomplishment for you to be able to make do with what's available at the house and let go of the "perfect" meal ideal...It would definitely take some pressure (and focus) off of food and eating, and make it easier to embrace flexibility in your meals.  Don't you think?

Maintaining How long did it take you to become an intuitive eater? Nov 15 2009
13:09 (UTC)

For example, on days where I have really long workouts, or multiple workout sessions (totaling 3+ hours of training) I may not be very hungry and not eat back "every single calorie I burned". The next day, or even two days later, I'm ravenous and have bigger portions than usual. It's not bingeing, it's not overeating... it's satisfying my nutritional needs. It's maintaining.

Absolutely relate!  I did a long trail run yesterday and was barely hungry all day.  I had a good steak dinner, but I honestly was not that hungry for it.  I am already on my second (generous) bowl of cereal & greek yogurt this morning..and I may even have some eggs in a while :)  Ravenous is right!

Ironically, sports forced me to forgoe counting calories. My activity level shot sky-high, and it just became impossible to count and log food anymore... I started taking extra servings at dinner, putting on a bit more pb, nibbling here and there... I just started eating more until I finally said "screw it" and stopped counting all together.

I think this is what I need to do.   I have been playing around with intuitive eating for a while now and struggling - I think I just need to stop counting altogether.  Like you, my activity level is quite high because of my running, so I am always doubting whether I'm eating enough or balancing my nutrients appropriately (hence, logging).  I like your "screw it" idea.  I think I need to implement it!

Weight Loss Filling up with water? Nov 14 2009
13:46 (UTC)

Drinking water won't hurt at all.  In fact, I take in about 2 quarts a day (then again, I am also a runner - but still)

As for your calorie intake, given that you don't have much to lose, I would actually suggest a 250-300 calorie deficit.  It will take longer, but that's always the case with the "last 5" or "last 10" lbs.   By keeping a smaller deficit, you would be eating quite close to your maintenance amount, making it easier once you have reached your goal weight to not gain.  It will also leave you less hungry and with more energy, which will in turn result in better workouts (meaning more calories burned).  In addition, because you are less hungry you will avoid the risk of overeating because your deficit is so high.  So, in my view, it's a win-win.

Best of luck!

I love, love, love homemade cranberry sauce.  I make mine with orange juice and it turns out delicious.  I particularly love it when it turns out chunky enough that some of the berries pop in your mouth.

I am the "cranberry sauce person" for my family at the holidays and I *always* have to make extra because people want to take some home it's sooo good.

How about something like the GI Jane challenge that vyperman & fitnessgirl amongst others have been attempting?  Being able to accomplish - oh, I don't know, 5 of those? - would certainly be enough of a fitness goal for me!!

Motivation 6 weeks of working out, no change, losing motivation :( Nov 13 2009

First, let me say it is great that you are exercising and you should keep that up for your health, not just weight loss.

That said, the reason we lose weight is that we burn more calories than we consume - the basic calories in vs. calories out equation.  So, are you counting your calories and keeping a food log?  Are you logging your burn through exercise?  If your weight hasn't budged in 6 weeks, chances are that your intake is evening out with your burn, leaving no deficit = no weight loss.

I would use the tools on this site to track your calories (measure what you eat by weight for greater accuracy) and burn and take it from there.

Foods Oatmeal oatmeal oatmeal. I need fresh ideas... Nov 12 2009

I add all kinds of things to oatmeal - both savory and sweet.  For sweet: pumpkin, cut up apples, peaches, blueberries, mashed banana, apple sauce, sliced almonds, walnuts, greek yogurt, cottage cheese, cinnamon, apple pie spice, pumpkin pie spice, unsweetened cocoa, caramelized ginger, nut butters of all types.  For savory: I make it either broth or water (or a combination), toppings range from scallions & soy sauce, sunny side egg (with runny egg yolk), asian hot sauce, cut up or shredded chicken, shrimp, pesto, spinach, crushed red peppers, bell peppers, tomato sauce...sky's the limit.

I love oatmeal (well, oat bran cereal, actually) and have it for lunch daily (along with a piece of fruit and/or raw veggies).  The things I mix into it change every day, though, to keep it interesting :)

ETA: For savory oatmeal, I usually prefer something like Steel Cut oats for more texture.

Motivation Someone actually called me fat... Nov 11 2009

I think another big part of it was a, "WHO THE HECK DO THESE PEOPLE THINK THEY ARE" moment.  I am their manager and by most people's standards I'm a good one...yet they think they can talk to me that way.  I suppose that tells me that I need to respect myself a little more and other will follow suit!

Honestly?  Next time that's what I would say: "who the heck do you think you are that you can address me like that??"  Seriously.  Some people need to be called on their inappropriateness and, like someone else said, "shamed" for their behavior.  That is just simply unacceptable under normal circumstances - even more so at the office!

Fitness Numbness in my foot Nov 11 2009

This used to happen to me when I started running.  I was tying my shoelaces too tight.  As you run, your foot swells and the tight shoelaces cut off some circulation = numb feet.  Just make sure your shoe is actually properly sized for your foot, and that your laces are tied properly ... I think that might take care of the problem!

Fitness Muscle Fatigue Nov 11 2009

Having recently experienced this I'd say two things: Rest & Recovery.

* Do you take a day off a week?  If not, you might need to start doing that, immediately.  One or two days off will help tremendously, believe me.

* You might be sleeping too little.  I was getting about 7-8 hours a night and found out that, with my training, I perform optimally when I get 8-9 hours a night.  I started adding 30-45 minutes per night and noticed the difference immediately.  Enough rest is a huge part of recovery.

* Up your calories!!  In addition to rest, good nutrition is KEY to recovery - both in terms of the amount of calories and the quality of those calories.  There is no reason that, with all your training, you should be eating so little.  No wonder your muscles hurt and your energy is zapped!  You are not feeding your body enough to replenish your energy and fuel your training.  Also, you need to eat more protein!!  Not only will it help your muscles repair, but it will keep any dangers of anemia at bay (particularly being a runner).

Good luck and train safe.

Actually, for me it depends.  When it comes to logging in my running by itself, I find that it captures my calorie burn well.  However, when it comes to setting an activity "type" (lightly active/moderately active/etc) and not logging in my workout separately, I find it underestimates.

Have you tried setting yourself to sedentary and adding in your workouts afterward?  That's how I got to the most accurate number for me.  It might take you a few weeks (up to a month) to find your "magic number"...  You might want to try going by the phord calculator and override the number that CC gives you.

Edited for typo.
