Weight Loss Dear all, need advice.. Nov 22 2009

I'm going to agree with everyone else on this.  You're young and your metabolism is most likely fast, so after a few weeks you'll be way too hungry on 1200 calories, and you risk relapsing into overeating.  You can reasonably shoot for 1500-1800 and still lose weight without torturing yourself.

I'd suggest alternating weeks of averaging 1500-1600 calories, and weeks of averaging 1700-1800 calories.  If you're anything like me, you'll find you actually lose more on the weeks where you eat a little more.

Just as a point of reference, I'm 26, 5'3 and maintain a healthy BMI at 2000-2300 calories (but I don't keep close track anymore, so it's likely higher than that on some days).  I also run 4 days a week (probably close to the calorie burn of your walking 45 min/day).  So you can see how 1200 would be way too little!

Good luck!

I suspect we're not being told all there is to know about this thing. I find it odd that every single death from the virus is immediately qualified with the phrase 'the victim had underlying health issues'.

The thing about what the news tells you is that you have to think about what they're not telling you. People are getting a severe strain that attacks the lungs and without medical intervention can die. And not just the old and very young as with seasonal flu viruses, either.

The other thing to know is that pandemics usually come in two waves. A small initial wave, then a major sweeping epidemic. We may have not yet seen the worst of this.

I think it bears watching.

I second everything written above... and also want to add that, unlike "regular" flu, we didn't get much of a break from H1N1 over the summer.  I'm not sure what that says about this strain, but it is something to keep in mind.

Humans are creative and invent all sorts of reasons why they should be important to the universe, but I don't see a need. The possibility of 100 years here, with thousands of miles to explore and billions of people to meet is more than enough for me.

Also.. I think this topic itself has meaning because I enjoy reading and answering these questions ;)

I think all this "socialist" talk is insanity.  He's the president, he's going to do geeky things like deliver public service announcements about how it's important to stay in school.

There isn't going to be a subliminal message for the kids, and even if there were, I doubt he's as good at delivering one as the advertising people at Coca Cola or Camel cigarettes.

Your kids are already brainwashed into asking you for all sorts of crap. They are good little capitalists.

Oh, and if you remember back to when you were in school.. try to imagine an assembly where there's a "special message from the president about the importance of school".  How many of you would actually take that seriously and not just be thinking about recess the whole time?

I never said you offended my beliefs (lack of god) or anyone else's. D: I just quote you. >.< I said "that's not offending someone out there." Someone, not a god. Why do you twist it? ;.;

The difference between you and I is that the science is perfect to me. Darwin wasn't a perfect man, but his theories were quite ground breaking. The bible's logic, TO ME, JUST ME, is faulty. And, I won't tell someone over and over that my logic is best. Like a shoe, it fits me. There's another pair out there for someone else.

We just have to let it go. xD Neither of us can win cause we're both so perfect. :P

So, if you believe what Darwin says, than I guess you can believe what any other man says because Darwin just had theories.  The bibles logic isn't faulty.  If you study and read deep into, the Old and New Testament connect.  God perfects and closes his circles.

Um.. the Bible was written by humans.  And "logic" doesn't equal proof.  The Bible is a bunch of morality tales, like Aesop's Fables, or Haroun and the Sea of Stories.

Darwin's theories are based on physical scientific evidence.. a really, really overwhelming amount of it.  I've gone to Church, so I'm going to ask you to please take a Biology class before you try to engage in debate about evolution.

By the way, your brain (or your priest or pastor or whoever's brain) is "perfecting and closing his circles".   It's called interpretive reading.  Everything in the Bible is open to interpretation.. that's the beauty of it.  It can't be proved or disproved because there is so much ambiguity and almost zero proof.

Now I'm sorry, but you've offended my Darwin, so I feel obligated to defend Him.

Congratulations on quitting smoking!! Both smoking and being obese are bad for your health, but you are much better off quitting smoking and gaining a few than continuing to smoke.

My advice.. (I quit smoking in January after 10 years of 1 1/2 packs a day, and have since gained and lost 23 lbs):

1. Continue to watch what you eat, and count calories carefully.

2. Start exercising -after getting cleared by your doc- both for losing weight and well-being, and to help heal your heart & lungs from the smoking.  Walking 1 hour every day is a good start.

3.  Your body will kind of self-regulate after a while.  It needs to learn to process food again without the extra stimulant.  If it helps you at all, drink a little coffee.

Also, your insurance would be OK with you being a smoker, but not with being 25 lbs overweight?  That seems kind of strange.  Either way, your health is way more important than what some crazy insurance company thinks.

Good luck!!! :)

Weight Loss Peanut butter Sep 02 2009

The nice thing about PB is that it keeps you from getting hungry for quite a while, especially if you have it at breakfast.  I think, as long as you are only eating it once a day, it's probably not what's contributing to your stall in weight loss.  Two tablespoons is a pretty generous serving, try measuring it out.  It's only 200 calories and well worth it for how long you stay full.

Fat is a necessary part of diet, and the fat in peanut butter is good for you, so don't worry about that.. it's probably just that your overall calories are too high.

A lot of judgmental attitudes on here.  It's her choice, and 16 really is not that young.

Actually, I'd imagine that in most cases being a 16-year old mother that is still in high school is harder than being an older mother that is better established financially.

There are a lot of arguments to this, but I will follow your logic and say that at 16 I had a lot more energy to raise a child than I will at 35 when I am "financially stable" (by the way, this is subjective.  some people are frugal and can raise a baby on a small amount of money, others are wasteful and cannot).

Babibu--  You hear a lot of horror stories about people getting pregnant after one slip-up, but these are not the norm.   There's a lot of timing that goes on with intercourse, you don't have a HUGE window to catch an egg.  Usually like 3-5 days, but for some 1-2, other lucky/unlucky people up to 7, depending on how long the sperm survive.    And that's if you even ovulated this month.

Wait a week or 2 and take a pregnancy test to set your mind at ease.

Random tip.. if you're going to bring toiletries, like packages of soap or whatever, don't leave them in bulk packaging.    I had my luggage seized and every packaged item taken.  I'm talking those 6-packs of dial soap, 2-packs of shampoo, etc.  They took everything and I had to wait 3 days for my clothes to get to me.  (Kinda funny now, not so much at the time!)

Thank you!  This is so true.  To be honest, most of the calorie calculators are still too low for me, and I'm sure for some other people around here.  Trust your body and eat enough to have energy.

I have lost 23 lbs, and am currently 130 lbs and still losing on ~1800 calories a day (even tho most sites tell me to eat 1300-1400).   I'd probably have to up that amount by about 300 to maintain.  So don't torture yourselves!  Eat!!

Fitness why are cross country girls so SMALL?! Aug 20 2009

In high school I was about 5'2 and 105 lbs when I ran XC.  I was actually one of the smaller people on our team, and our team was fast overall.   The very best runner on our team looked much older than she was.. by that I mean, she actually had a woman's body, with curves and everything, and was by no means overly skinny.. just very trim.  If I had to guess I"d say she was 125 or so.   No one could even come close to her in a race.

I don't think it's as simple as smaller=better, though I've noticed that the more like a boy I look, the faster I am.

The real reason I was quick in HS is because I played soccer and ran 4 miles every other day in middle school.   I started running with my dad when I was about 6.   It has more to do with training than size, I think, though the 2 are kind of correlated.  It's tough to keep weight on when you're running so many miles a week.

Foods Measuring Noodles? Aug 20 2009

I believe they mean 2 oz of dry noodles, which actually works out to be more than 1/4 cup once they are cooked.   The noodles soak up some water and expand, so some of what you're getting afterwards is water weight and bulk.   I usually go by 1 cup= about a serving, because anything less than a cup of pasta is just way too little for me if it's a main course, and I don't mind being a little off on calories if it means I'm satisfied.  Someone else may have a better answer...

Original Post by pgeorgian:

yes, caffeine is an appetite suppressant, like all stimulants are, but that doesn't automatically translate into weight loss.  i used to drink coffee all day long, skip breakfast, and often miss lunch.  i did that for about fourteen years, and gained a little over 40 pounds.

when i cut back on my coffee and started eating breakfast, i was hungrier and ate more all day.  i also started to lose weight.  now, i keep it to two cups of (really good) coffee and eat a breakfast of 400-500 calories.  i need a snack by 10am, sometimes earlier.  and--oh yeah--i've lot almost all the weight i gained between 25 and 38 (i was underweight before).

I've noticed this same exact thing.  I used to drink coffee all day, never eat breakfast, sometimes miss lunch, and eat a HUGE dinner.  I gained 20-30 lbs  over the course of 3 years.   One of the biggest changes in my lifestyle is that I never miss a meal, and the 20 lbs have melted off.

Everything in moderation, right?  OP, your withdrawal headaches must be awful if you miss a day! Surprised

I'd suggest trying 1700 or so for a couple weeks.  Our stats are almost identical and I'm still losing on 1600-1800 with much less hunger than when I was eating 1300 or 1400.   If you're super hungry, you can go a few days eating almost at maintenance (2100 or so), it won't hurt your weight loss and you'll feel better.

I wish companies would be happy sticking to useless placebos. Instead they have to find loopholes that allow them to include completely unsafe ingredients.  Anyone who knowingly sells a product that eventually ends up injuring or killing someone is going to end up rotting in a special place reserved for unethical corporate jerks Smile

This post also applies to the people who popped in with their "unbiased testimonials".

Simon-  no, I haven't been on a structured strength training program before.   That may actually help me a lot because I tend to be disorganized and lifting seems to take some planning.

Thanks to everyone for responding.   I am going to try just a bit of lifting sometime this week.. probably with light weights in front of my TV like klc said :)  I'll let you guys know how it goes.

Two people can look and feel entirely different at similar weights and the same height.   If you have a good amount of muscle, or a larger frame, you are going to feel more comfortable at the higher end of the range.   I don't think this constitutes body dismorphia in your case because you are already within a healthy range.   It's good that you feel happy about your weight, I think it's much worse to be obsessed with losing 5 lbs to fit into some standard.

puh8-  thank you for the links, and I can relate to how you used to feel in the weight room.  I tried lifting with my boyfriend last year, and I felt pretty silly with all those buff dudes (and ladies) around me.  Also, I wasn't counting calories so I was just gaining muscle under my fat, which was not so attractive.

danielle-  Yep, boring and annoying describes it for me.  The story about your husband gives me some hope that I could get into it at some point.  I'm at the point where I'm trying to push myself to lift, and once something clicks in me, I'm sure I'll go for it... just not today ;)

Also, my XC coach in high school used to have us weight train a couple days in addition to running.  I have to admit I completely half-a**ed it and didn't get much accomplished (besides crunches, I've always loved those).  But I'm sure he was making us lift for a reason, and that's always in the back of my head.

Thanks everyone for giving me different perspectives and a lot to think about.  I appreciate it!

Eat at least 1800 calories a day and continue to work out 4 days a week.  You need to revive your metabolism by eating much much more.  Even 1500 sounds too low for your age and activity level.

Oh.. and depending on how tall you are, 136 lbs is not overweight for most heights. There is no way your body will let you lose 3 lbs a week..
