Health & Support So Tired of this "Real Woman" garbage. Sep 17 2009
04:57 (UTC)

But people usually do mean thin/less curvy girls are less womanly.    I was reading the one thread here somewhere and it was saying about how women's perception of beautiful is different then a mans perception of beautiful, and other things.  And like 12 times in the same thread I saw " real men like curves" or "real women have curves"  "real women don't look like sticks".    They may not purposefully be trying to insult people without curves, but it IS insulting.   I think people should word it that their "natural size" is beautiful or like you said that natural curves and real figures are good, and you don't have to all be thin.    But saying it the way they do makes it seem as though I shouldn't qualify as a womanly or feminine because I do not have big curves.   And being that for a good part of my life I was told I had a boyish figure and was once told by a guy to "go grow some boobs over the summer, you could use them", it is an issue to me.

I don't totally agree with everything the OP said but I do see where she is coming from at many points.  I think she wants people to not judge each other based on weight [ meaning she judged the fat people..but they judged her first..it creates a never ending cycle]

And with the fashion thing, I interpreted what she meant as.  If the media did start using BMI's of 30 and up or whatever other sizes, society would not all of a sudden start gaining weight.  Its not just because of fashion that people believe they to be thin..its just how society is [yes, media and different things may have started it, but they can't change it immediately]. I think of it like how people always want to tan now, in the "old days" the more pale you were.. the richer/fancier you were.  Now most people go tanning and expose themselves to skin cancer...just to look tan and pretty. [I know its not the same thing..its just a similarish comparison].  Its like societys view of beautiful has changed, and everyone wants to be what their not originally.

And as a previous poster said, she wasn't necessarily talking about everyone, she wasn't generalizing, she was talking about real people who she met/knows, who aren't like the people on this site, because they AREN'T living healthy lifestyles.

I think everyone should be treated equal, you can have pride in yourself and in things, but you shouldn't be condescending to others because they do not have those same things.  People need to see the other side of the fence.  Just as you have said many fat people have been treated like crap, I have too, for the opposite reason.  I have been told by people I am not " a real woman" because I do not have nice big boobs or a big butt. [I am naturally thin and am on this website trying to gain weight to become more "average"..whatever that may be].  Heck, when I was in my younger teens [like ages 12 to 14] people used to tell me I look like the boys in my class because I didn't really have any boobs. I've had multiple guys tell me they would never want to date me because if they'd eventually probably have to sleep with me and that would be "gross" and like "banging a bag of bones".  In high school I was sick one day and didn't eat lunch..because everytime I ate I would throw up, and had a friend report to the guidance counselor that I must be anorexic because I didn't eat anything, so a whole rumor started that I'm anorexic and a druggie and thats why I'm thin.  Ok thats enough of the insults I've had said to me, but I also know bigger people have encountered just as many if not more,  but the point is that neither of us should be getting made fun for it.  We both get hurt by it, and it only makes matters worse.  I have big friends and I think they are beautiful just as they are, but I don't envy them, just as they like how I am, but they don't envy me.

i know how you feel. im not as tall as you though.  im 5'6" and 101 lbs.

my mom/sister are 5'3" and like 130 or 135 lbs and have normal sized boobs/waist {like not big...but not small}.   my dads entire side of the family is over weight [like all over 200 lbs].  i have a few cousins on my moms side of the family though who are tall/thin like me and have the same frustrations.

i always think the most annoying thing is that at the side of my boobs like by my ribs..it sticks out wider.  so as if my boobs arent small enough..when you look at me straight on..my ribs/sides stick out wider than my boobs do lol.  it makes wearing some clothes a pain in the butt.

i hope somene else will respond in here that can give both of us advice! lol

i have a similar shape to you.  being...no shape lol.  where your shoulders stick out as far as hips...but your waist doesnt go in far.and you dont always look as skinny as some people because your rib cage sticks out on the sides..its not fat..its just the way your ribs..so its like even if you lose weight your waist still looks the same because bone there...[not in a starved way where ribs stick out...but in that it looks wider..and its not fat]. i dont know how to describe it.   so i'm also trying to do that...i want to gain weight and get curves.   its like even when i gain weight i want it to go to certain areas, but you cant just eat and make weight go to one spot. i think you just need to eat and let it go all over and eventually you fill out more.

ive heard friends and stuff say they feel that when they gained weight that it went to their boobs and hips/butt first..because theyd need bigger bras and pants.  but they werent skinny people gaining weight..they were already just normal sized w/ some curves..and gaining weight to be even more curvy.   me..i never noticed where any weight goes because ive never gained much.

I also have similar stats to you, I'm 20 yrs old, 5'6" and my weigh fluctuates usually from 100 to 103, so I'm not going to comment saying you most likely look bad and/or unhealthy because that'd be hypocritical.   I think you should just try eating more through out the day and just let your parents know that you are doing that, then they won't expect you to eat as much at that meal.  Because by eating so much at dinner, if it is making you stuffed..then your not eating through out the day which makes things even worse.  You need to eat a few meals through out the day and make sure your parents know, so they won't expect you to eat so much at dinner.

I suggest looking through the what did you eat threads because theres usually alot of different meals which also list calories and you could get ideas from there on what you could eat to bump up your calories for other meals.

im 20 yrs old.   5'6".  my weight fluctuates from day to day anywhere from 100 to 103 usually.   and in clothes it depends on the brand, usually im a 1 or a 3.

and as for some of the people who said how do some people fit in one size jean when others are the same weight and dont fit..  i think im a good example of that.  im naturally thin and a light weight, and when you think 100 pounds you would automatically think size 0..and usually when people find out what i weight it seems less than what i actually look like [i look more like 110] ..most of myjeans are a size 3..and theres people who weigh 20 pounds more than me and that also wear a size 3.  it all just depends on how your proportioned and everything. so its very hard to compare yourself to other people

Weight Gain how much exercise? Sep 05 2009

yeah its pretty much just sitting around.  you dont have to be watching tv.. i mean you could be on the computer, watching movies, listening to music, play video games, drawing, playing board games, solitaire, reading, knitting, latch hooking.

some of those things may seem dumb or boring for you to do depending on your personality  [like latch hooking or knitting or reading] but it can be a nice break from just staring at a television or computer all the time, you know? sometimes just watching movies and stuff gets old.

Weight Gain how much exercise? Sep 05 2009

im not a doctor either...but im pretty sure when people are severely underweight and need to gain weight, it helps for them to be sedentary and not do much.  because if they exercise/ work out/ move around alot it burns more calories, therefore making it so they need to eat even more.

so if your underweight and trying to gain. lets say for example you need to eat 3000 calories while being sedentary.  so if you are going to exercise and move around..you might burn off 1000 calories...therefore making it that you need to eat 4000 calories to gain.

when people are to skinny and recovering from ED's they should not be completely concerned with gaining fat and body fat..they just need to gain weight to survive, not be worried about becoming overweight.

once they are at a more steady, healthy weight, they can exercise and do other things and worry about an ideal distribution of weight and not have to eat as many calories and therefore be able to burn more.

Weight Gain Help, do I need to eat more calories? May 30 2009

Yeah, I saw before they say for people trying to gain alot of weight, the calorie amount they tell you isn't always accurate.  They've told me a good place to start is 2,500 for a few days, and if you don't gain up it to 3,000, and so on.  So if you start doing 2,500 and you do gain weight I think thats an okay place to stay for a while, but if your not gaining, up it more. [it also can depend on how active you are].  And maybe if keep uping your calories up and you reallly feel full and you feel like you literally can't eat through it all, you can look up which foods have the most calories and eat more of them.

I'd suggest looking in the "weight gainers what did you eat" thread, because theres alot of good ideas of foods to eat that help you gain weight, and gives you an idea of what other people eat to gain weight and how much. Some people don't put how many calories they ate, some do, but overall it should help you.  i'm one of the people who do, I usually eat anywhere from 3,000 to 4,000 a day and i put how many are from what foods.  That way if you see I'm eating a certain thing with alot of calories, maybe you'd want to try it.

Is he naturally thin [without cycling or hiking or being vegan]?  Some people honestly do just have a fast metabolsm, which is what I have.

At 5'11" and 129 lbs his bmi is about 18, and anything under 18.5 is usually considered underweight.  Usually a good median I've always heard is like 20 to 24.  So for him to be at a 20 BMI is like 145 pounds.

I would say maybe put in the food calculator approximately how much he used to eat in one day, then you could compare its total to what they suggest.  If he's already normally eating like 3,000 and still isn't gaining weight it should be increased.

2,400 might be what he needs for like being sedentary for the average person maybe? It also could depend on what you put in, maybe you put in a low weight and a long period of time for him to reach it.  But then again its not always right,  I weigh 101 and my goal on here is 130 by october 1st, and it tells me to eat 2,000 a day.  I've been eating 3,000 a day..and still not gaining, and I don't work, exercise or do anything.  Some people just have to eat ALOT of calories depending on their body.

I'd say maybe have him start at 2,500 a day [unless he's already eating more than that], then if thats not enough try 3,000, if thats not enough, go up to 3,500, if thats not enough go up to 4,000.   Since he's very active it could make it need to be a lot more than the normal average person.  For example,  Michael Phelps..since he's so athletic and trained so much for the olympics and everything...used to eat 12,000 calories a day.  Now your BF doesn't need that much..but it shows that the more you train and burn off calories.. the more calories you need.

Oh yeah, and I don't know if you've done this already or not, but theres lots of website out there that list which foods have the most calories in them and you could check it out to see what he likes the most.   I'd suggest like...bread, pasta, potatoes, rice, cereals, fruit, vegetables, nuts, seeds.   I'd also suggest dried fruit, they have lots of calories.

I am the same way, naturally thin and its hard to gain weight.  I'm 5'6" and when I joined here last week I was 101, and I never counted calories, since I joined here I have been trying to eat a MINIMUM of 3,000 calories a day.  And I weighed myself yesterday and I was up to 102, when I weighed myself today I was back to 101.  It can depend on how your body is, most gain on 2,500 and I haven't.  If your naturally thin and lets say you've been eating 1500 calories your whole life [and not realizing it since you didnt' count calories] and that was enough to fill you up and you maintained your thin weight.  You should bump it up to eat maybe 2000 or 2500, and see how that works.  I'd say go put in how much you used to approximately eat per day and see what the total was, then add like 500 to it.

Yeah those are good.  As I was reading it I was thinking to myself "I love those, but it def. needs honey on it!"  then I read where where you said about the honey I was like "yes!" lol.

They are very good. I usually eat it as a sandwich though w/ 2 slices of bread together.  I usualy take the honey and squirt it on the bottom piece of bread, then w/ the banana I take half of it and cut it into thin pieces (maybe like 1/4 an inch thick, so its just abunch of circles) and lay them out on the honey, then take a bunch of peanut butter and smear it over the bananas [ I usually put a lot on because I LOVE peanut butter], then take the rest of the banana and cut it into thin pieces again, and put it on the peanut butter, then squirt honey on that, and then put the top slice on it.

very yummy.

Well as others said you can't really say " I want to lose this fat area here"  but you can try and tighten up those muscles and stuff.

From what I've always been told  aerobics, swimming and walking are the best ways to get more of a flatter stomach.   A friend of mine got a firmer stomach by dieting/becoming healthy and doing yoga.  She always said she couldn't swim and walking/running tired her out.  So she did yoga for almost 2 hours every day for a month or so, and it toned her up all around.

I'm the same.  My whole life I've been skinny and its hard to gain weight.  I don't run or work out or anything either. [well as a kid I was always playing and riding bike and doing sports, so we always assumed thats why I was thin. but I still am regardless of what I do]

I'm 5'6"  and I am currently 101 lbs.  My weight often fluctuates a few pounds, it may be 100 one week, and 104 the next, and back to 101 the next week, and thats without even changing my eating [probably because I measure myself at different times of the day and stuff].  The most I ever remember seeing was 105 lbs.

My goal is to be like 130 pounds hopefully.  I just recently only joined here so I'm only now learning about calories and everything, before I would just eat whatever I wanted when  I wanted and didn't pay attention to calories.

Fitness My 10yr olds concerned with thigh jiggle! May 20 2009
00:50 (UTC)
Original Post by katerina1623:

I've been on CC for almost a year now and have never posted a comment, but I felt really compelled to.

I just want to say that I am 25 now but at 10 years old I was a chubby kid and bigger than all my friends and it bothered me immensely. I thought I was fat and not only did I have "thigh jiggle" but also "tummy jiggle" and everything else. I don't know what's healthiest for a 10 year old when it comes to eating and exercise, but I just want to say that she needs emotional support. I so sincerely wish that my mom had taken concern and interest in me at that age and talked to me about how to be healthy mentally. I wish my mom encouraged me to look at myself differently, not feel bad, etc. I wish she ran around and played with me to get me moving and actually tried to make me feel better about myself.

Sure it's concerning that at that young age she's already thinking about these things.. but in the society that we grow up in it's normal. People don't want to admit that, but it's "normal" to worry about your weight at any age because we're spoon fed crap like "The Biggest Loser".

In my opinion, you're doing the right thing, teaching her to eat healthier and move around more is not a bad thing unless it becomes obsessive. Just careful that she doesn't become obsessed. Tell her how beautiful she is and the physical and personality qualities that she has that her friends don't. Tell you what, most of her influence is coming from her friends, so just try to teach her a mentality that she'll use to protect herself the next time kids at school tell her she's got jiggly thighs. At least she's talking to you about this and I think she SHOULD be exposed to your conversations about weight loss because if she's not getting that info from you, she'll get it elsewhere and it will be infinitely less healthy.

Take my opionion for what it's worth.. a former 10 yr old that had crying fits about how she was bigger than all the other girls.

I think it all depends on the kid.  Some kids ARE actually overweight and it can be unhealthy and parents can try to help them become healthy.  Its not right to say all children should eat junk food and not exercise and not care.  In elementary schools/jr.high/high school, we are all required to take gym class to encourage being healthy [regardless of your weight], because of the rise in obesity.  But she hasn't said if her child is actually over weight and having problems, or if she is just targeting areas of her body and acting like theres a problem with it.

As you said, if she does weight to much, if its prolonged it may continue until she's an adult and then she will be mad that her mother didn't help her.   But she didn't say her child is overweight she said she was "well built"  which may just mean average or having a tad of baby fat, which dieting won't fix.   If she is overweight and she thinks its an unhealthy weight she should take the child to a doctor to see if she is normal/healthy, and handle it from there, not put the kid on a diet and ask what exercises she can do for thinner thighs.  Grown women have issues getting their thighs smaller..let alone a 10 year old.

What I think other people are trying to say is that assuming she is built and average sized, but may have 'bigger thighs".. therefore she shouldn't be dieting.  Theres a BIG difference between kids eating healthy foods and having fun exercising in a normal way,  and a kid who is purposefully on a diet and exercising to become skinnier.  And a mother who is dieting shouldn't be telling a child how much weight she has lost and how she did it, because the child will most likely want to do it to.   And you can't tell the child "everyones built differently, be your own weight its okay" because she herself is dieting and the child will see that as being a hypocrite most likely.

It will be hard for her to explain to her now about dieting healthy and telling her she is healthy and everything because apparently its already engrained into the child that she dieting and exercise are what she should do, otherwise she wouldn't be acting stubborn when you tell her she is doing enough.  A "normal" kid would be like okay and wouldn't even be asking their mother about dieting and how to have thinner thighs.

Some people on this forum have had ED's and I think its wise to listen to their experiences to see if the girls behavior may end up like that.  Many of them are just saying they may have started off like that and it lead to more and more dieting/restricting/exercising.

Well there have been alot of replies to this so I thought I would start out this post alittle different.  I strongly recommend you read this book:

It's TRUE STORY about a girl who is 11 and her parents are constantly talking about weight and dieting.  The girl thinks its stupid and shallow.  But eventually she begins dieting and her mother enables her pretty much.  The girl becomes annorexic and never eats and eventually pulls her skin on her stomach out and tries to "cut off" the fat.  Its about her struggle and the struggle of weight pressure on young girls.

I think if you read it you might see how even the littlest things of pressure can be massive to a child.  Most children look up to their parents and want to be like them.  So you talking about losing weight will make her think she should lose weight.  If your comparing yourself to other thinner women, she will compare herself to other thinner children.  You haven't mentioned your weight or her weight, but maybe you should just keep your weight more to yourself.     I have a younger cousin who is about 6 and she is overweight, the doctors have told her parents just to have her eat more healthy, and maybe take up an activity.  So she does ballet and thinks its fun, she doesn't even think of it as exercise, she just enjoys it, and her whole family eats healthy now.  She weighed about 100 pounds which overweight for a child now, she is fine and the doctors said she doesn't have to keep doing the activity but she does it as fun.

Another example I have is when I was in elementary school one of my best friends had a "chunky" baby face and was a little heavier than average, but not fat.  When she turned 12 she became much taller and she grew almost 4 inches over the summer..and went from chunky to thin/average.  She never changed her eating habits or exercise or whatever, but she just hit puberty and grew taller and averaged out.

So maybe tell her not to worry about it and that she is beautiful regardless.  Unless her weight is actually a more health concern [as it was with my cousin], then you could consider changing her foods, but I would not recommend her training and exercising constantly.  I also don't think you should talk about your weight loss around her and have her watching weight shoes.   Weight loss should be about becoming healthy not about becoming a certain number.

Yup, and if they would eat a cake and you would joke and be like "thats fatty" or say "ok, mrs. piggy"  its socially unacceptable and rude.  but its okay to say things the other way.

No I don't know my level now, as I said I don't know how many calories are in most of the food I eat.  I often mix foods and take a bit of everything for a meal, so the labels on the boxes aren't necesarily how much I am eating which confuses me.  And I often go out to eat so I don't know how many calories are in it.  My guess is I eat enough that it balances out with how many calories I burn a day, since my weight always stays the same.

My stomach is fine and I have been getting my period fine my whole life [since i was about 13].  I've just naturally been thin.  I try to eat past being full and then I get sick because I'm so stuffed, so I usually eat until I'm full, then in a few hours I eat again until I'm full.

I don't know if I'm considered unhealthy or not.  I mean they always say if you have a BMI under 18 you are underweight and at risks of more things,  but if someone is naturally that way [not forcing themselves to be and restricting themselves], is it the same? What I mean is there could be 5 people out there who are 5' 6" and normally weigh 135 and restrict themselves to weigh 101, which is unhealthy.  But if I'm naturally at 101, am I just as unhealthy/at risk as them?  I mean we would physically probably look similar but would we be similar in our lung/heart/body functions?
