Foam rolling is basically rolling on foam cylinders to massage sore muscles.

Thanks for the replies -- I had the initial dizziness/nausea and wondered if it was related.

Fitness Anyone do Jillian Michaels 30 day shred? Aug 20 2009
17:40 (UTC)

I have gotten amazing results. Can't solely credit it to Shred -- I supplement it with about 45 minutes of cardio kickboxing on some days and running on the others. But I've noticed that my arms, abs and legs are stronger and I can definitely see a lot of definition where there was none before.

I can't say that doing Shred alone (or with Diet) will work miracles but at the very least it will help non-advanced people gain upper body strength and cardio capacity, which is not a bad deal for $8 and 25 minutes a day.

It took about three weeks after I started the Shred before I started to see a real difference in my body. I didn't do it every day because I already have a muscular frame and I didn't want to look a certain way (I won't say the dreaded "b" word before I incur the wrath of the regulars but I do know my body pretty well.)

I've been doing it for the last six months or so on an average of twice to three times a week and together with cardio and my muscles are much, much more visible than they were when I was running only. But, no, my muscles are not "bigger." Thank goodness.

I'm a woman of color. I believe that for people of color (not Asians though)generally, we're allowed to hit the upper limits of BMI but we're not supposed to go above. I think there's a cultural acceptance of curviness in certain cultures and that's great. However, there's also higher incidences of diabetes, heart disease and other obesity-related diseases probably tied to that cultural acceptance (among other factors of course) of those first few extra pounds that tend to lead to a whole lot more pounds later on.

I think sometimes we ignore the reality that some of our cultural norms may be harmful to our health. Most Americans are overweight but that doesn't make being overweight "normal."

I've found that push-ups, mountain climbers, half-squat thrusts, planks have really helped my mid section. I used to do a lot of cardio and I never saw much definition in that area until I added these moves to my workouts. Of course, I also now eat in moderation whereas I never had to when I was younger....

I too thought floggingsully was some hardbodied chica with blond hair.

I guess for the most part. Today, I'm starting to think that this guessing thing is not working. In ten days I have not lost a whole pound -- and if my "guesstimates" are correct I'm running at least a 500 calorie deficit six days. Oh, well.

I'm finally losing my "bar exam" weight -- hoping to be on target by September. I don't beat myself up over it though. I told myself I'd do anything to pass the bar exam -- including eating chocolate covered peanuts. It worked. Ha ha. Losing weight is not nearly as difficult as studying for the MBE.

I wouldn't use aluminum-based deodorant/anti-perspirantif you paid me. That stuff is dangerous. For every study debunking the danger there's another confirming it. There are other options without all that baggage. I use Tom's of Maine and just reapply once during the day if I need it.

Also, depending on your age and family history you may want to have your GYN poke around to see if you have fibroids. They usually cause the lower stomach to protrude and they don't usually cause pain so you don't really know they're there. Not trying to scare you -- sorry if I did. Many people in my family suffer with fibroids and the "grapefruit in the lower belly" look was what tipped them off -- in addition to other symptoms like feeling full and always needing to go to the bathroom.

Fitness calories burned versus calories eaten Jun 02 2009

A question for the experts:

So my burn meter says 2860 -- that's including 860 burned during exercise. I have my account set to sedentary although I work out every day. For some reason I just don't trust these numbers. I eat around 2000 calories a day -- so that means I have an 800+ deficit and should be able to lose more than a pound a week?

But what about if you've been working out hard for several years -- wouldn't that make your body more efficient at doing certain activities and thus lower the number of calories expended doing those activities? Does the burn meter take that into account?

I've been there. You're burned out. Take some time off and do something else. Hiking or learn a new sport as other posters suggested. If you take a month or two off you'll be itching to start running again by then.

I don't know your fitness level so this is just a suggestion.

For most races you have to be able to complete at least half (preferably more) the racing distance comfortably at this stage of training. If you can't run 3 miles comfortably now then you might have a problem trying to run 6.2 in a month.

But I'd still encourage you to try to jog at least a couple miles a day. Try to work your way up to 3.1 miles without needing to stop. Also alternate between running and walking the entire distance two or three times a week until race day and you should be fine. Get your mind prepared for the distance; if you're in decent shape you should be able to finish it.

Good luck!

I'm in the same boat -- but getting out. I ran distance for about fifteen years (40-60 miles a week) and I have injuries up the wazoo. I finally had to do something because I realized that I no longer walked like a normal person because I was in pain all day every day. Of course, I gained a ton of weight while I was healing.

Here's my new and improved workout routine which is working wonders for me and not killing my joints:

Weekdays: mornings: Kickboxing (Turbo Jam/Tae bo) and evenings: 30 day shred or Banish Fat Boost Metabolism.

One day off per week. I do yoga once a week which I believe has also helped heal some of my lower leg  and foot injuries.

Weekends: Running (14-16 miles max)

With counting calories I've managed to lose some of the weight I've gained on this routine.

Resistance training has been key for me. It's made me stronger and more toned overall. I miss running every day -- especially now that it's warm outside but I can't imagine going back to living with all that pain.

Good luck.
