my husband drives me crazy,,he wants me to lose 30 kg by june,,and im trying very hard,,i want to lose it also,,,he had me only eating 700 cal or so a day for a year,,,and you know what,,i didnt lose one pound that whole year,,so he said i was cheating and eating more then i am suppose to,,i told me no ,,i promised,,well then finally i searched online and read that i wasnt eating enough to lose and i told him.,..so he agreed to try it my way,,so i made a menu of 1200 day and i started walking everyday and doing dance aerobics 3 times a week..and the weight started coming off,,not fast but this last 15 days ive lost 3 kg,,yippy  right?  yesterday he looked at my menu and said,,  in a nice and quiet voice,,,,  I dont think this plan is going to work,,its too much food,,you need to eat less,,,,   I freaked,,,I prob shouldnt have but I did,,,I tried it his way for a year and nothing happened...15 days my way and i lose,,,grrr

Im going to keep trying it my way and see,,,he said in june when he weighs me he better see real results,,,oh gee  that is what I need ,,more stress about all this,,,,well wish me luck,,,,,,,,,nasima

My mother's name is Nasima! We're Muslim too. But my dad never told my mom what to eat, haha. Even if he had, I don't think my mom would have listened.

Edit: Oh yeah, my dad is also very, very thin, and my mother is heavier. My dad is supportive of my mom when she goes to the gym, but usually he doesn't get involved in that kind of stuff. I think he's learned to keep his mouth shut about it.

you take in calories starting from the chewing process- once in your stomach, I think the figure was 80% of the calories are already absorbed?

That's untrue. The majority of calories are absorbed through the small intestine. Alcohol is absorbed into the blood stream via the stomach's lining as well as the intestine, however. A small amount of glucose can be absorbed in the mouth, but it has to already be in the form of glucose, not a more complex carbohydrate. Saliva can break down carbs into maltose, but this maltose has to be further broken down into glucose (this takes place in the small intestine) prior to being absorbed by the body.

Weight Loss Walking Nov 16 2009

Living in Los Angeles without a car kind of sucks, because it's so difficult to get around, and the public transportation is unreliable at best. Luckily, I live in Venice Beach, and everything is within walking distance here. Also, it's all flat land. We have a Santa Monica city-run bus service that is separate from LA's terrible Metro, and the buses actually run on time. I still have a car, of course, and I drive when I absolutely have to. Most of the time, I walk everywhere though. I go to school at UCLA, and end up walking all over campus. I also take 1.5 hour walks every night, up the boardwalk, or the beach. I log about 6-8 miles a day, usually. Walking is relaxing, and I've found that it facilitates my weight loss. I also bike, but I walk/run a lot more.

Happy Birthday! And yeah, I said the same thing last year when I turned 22. I was like, WTF is there to look forward to now? 16, you can drive. 18, you're legal. 21, you can drink... Past that, it's all retirement age and social security.

Games & Challenges goal weight by christmas Nov 16 2009

I have about 12-15 lbs left to go as well. I doubt I'll get there by Christmas, though I will surely try. At most, I'll probably lose 10 lbs by the 25th, and that in and of itself would be a true Christmas miracle, lol.

Luckily, losing weight also means cheaper clothes, since almost all of the stuff on sale/clearance racks are always the smaller sizes. Most people don't wear those sizes, and they seem to have a more difficult time selling, so pride yourself on your weight loss, and get ready for some bargains.

Foods Cheesy tasting omlette? Nov 13 2009

I second the gruyere, or the nutritional yeast. Nutritional yeast gives food this particular flavor that I find difficult to describe. It's sort of malty, sort of cheesy, and kind of salty. Personally, I really love it on tofu with a bit of Braggs.

Grated gruyere is fantastic on just about everything, imho.

Foods Stevia? Nov 13 2009

I don't know about how harmful stevia is, but I can't stand the taste/aftertaste. I buy one that claims to have no bitter aftertaste, but I swear that it makes everything I sweeten taste revolting. Especially coffee, but also tea. Some people (like my cousin) don't seem to mind it, but I think that if I had continued using it, my taste buds would have planned a coup or something.

Foods What's the deal with Turkey Bacon? Nov 13 2009
21:21 (UTC)

The deal with turkey bacon is that it's amazing. I buy mine from Trader Joe's, it's uncured lean turkey bacon (no added sodium or nitrates), and crisps up nicely. Just make sure you keep it cold, and use it quickly, as there are no preservatives in it.

Also: it's applewood smoked, and therefore impossibly tasty.

Foods Drinking Chocolate.... whoa Nov 13 2009

I spoon peanut butter out of the jar, sprinkle cinnamon on it, and eat that straight all of the time. Also: nutella. Those dry chocolate powders are awesome by the way - they're kind of malty and rich. And delicious. I like the texture of it dissolving in my mouth.

Weight Loss Something Unexpected Nov 13 2009

Fiber One yogurt (I know, sounds weird, but it tastes good with flax granola or Fiber One cereal) is pretty good. Also, drinking lots of water helps. If you are really, really, really backed up, try some sugar-free candy made with sugar alcohols. It draws water into your intestines, which makes bowel movements easier. Just don't make the mistake of eating the whole bag, or else you will be on the toilet all night.

Weight Loss Does diet soda increase appetite? Nov 13 2009

I think that diet soda is one of those 'YMMV' things. It has never triggered cravings for me, nor has diet soda/tea/sugar-free popsicles/jell-o/candy/whatever stalled my weight loss. I find that having something sweet (but sugar-free) while craving something sweet satisfies me without adding too many extra calories.

Weight Loss How slow is slow for last 10 pounds? Nov 12 2009
22:32 (UTC)
3

Yeah, the last few take forever. It's mostly because (if you're like me) you've already lost a lot of weight, and your metabolism has changed to account for that weight loss. I eat at maintenance for awhile, with double the exercise, and then go back to dieting. It seems to work, but I'm sure it'll just get more and more difficult the closer I come to my goal. I've lost, like, 2.5 lbs since the 20th. Not very much, but 2.5 lbs is better than 0 lbs.

Weight Loss Does anyone calorie count in their head? Nov 12 2009
19:01 (UTC)
11

Yeah, I estimate my calories a lot. When I do this, I use packaging/labels and (for produce/meat) the calorie information that's been memorized as a result of using this website, haha. I always set my daily calories eaten at 100 calories over my estimation, since people tend to underestimate - though I think that I am relatively precise.

You could monitor your health accurately.

So could any third party with the right equipment.  That has governmental / insurance monitoring written all over it.

Or maybe I'm just paranoid.

Yeah, maybe. I am too, but I also kinda want to be a cyborg. Laser eyes would be better, but I'll take what I can get. :D

Weight Loss What's your waist to hip ratio? Nov 12 2009

.70, apparently. Waist measurement of 26, hip measurement of 37. I hope I lose the remainder of my weight proportionally, but it's not like that sort of thing can be controlled.

I have no idea. I'm a hair under 5'11", and I have 6" wrists, I wear a size 9 shoe, and my elbow breadth is 2.25". I would say that I have a small bone structure, but I really can't be sure because I am long limbed and tall.

You sound very similar to me. I would say you have a small frame too, for sure.

Yeah, I think we weigh the same too. Crazy!

Foods Anyone use Natures Own bread, stevia, or erthryol? Nov 11 2009

I'm into sugar alcohols. Mostly xylitol and erythritol, sometimes isomalt and sorbitol (into sugar free candy). It can be a bit of a laxative at first, but you get used to it.

Foods What goes good on a bean burger? Nov 11 2009

Mushrooms, spicy jack, chili flakes, sprouts. I make everything I eat impossibly spicy, though, so you might want to opt out of the chili flakes.

I am all over them nibs. I think the brand I buy is 'Sweet Riot', or something. If you can get over the idiotic text all over the tin, they're really quite good. I love dark chocolate, though. And at 1-2 calories a nib, it's perfect when I'm craving. I put one or two in my mouth and let them melt.

Foods so... no one eats Arctic Char? Nov 11 2009

I eat Artic Char, when Whole Foods carries it. They're supposed to have it year-round, but they seem to be having an issue with the supplier. I have no idea what the calorie count is. I just use the count for lake trout, since they're similar-ish.

Weight Loss Survey;) Nov 10 2009

If you could lose weight anywhere on your body where would it be:

My arms, my thighs.

What is your favorite weight loss breakfast:

Egg whites, mushrooms, zucchini, mozzarella, turkey bacon, coffee. Lots of Cholula or Tapatio

What is your favorite weight loss lunch:

Tuna, light mayo, dill relish, lemon juice, jalapenos.

What is your favorite weight loss dinner:

Rosemary infused turkey burgers with a strong mustard. Or anything inedibly spicy.

What is your weight loss dessert:

Sugar-free pudding/jell-o, or a sugar-free creamsicle.

What are your snacks and how many do you eat (times a day):

Crispbread, high fiber/low cal tortillas, cheese. How many times a day I eat varies.

What is your indulgent dessert:

Anything I bake.

What are the few things that you avoid:

Excess/additional sugar, refined carbs.

What is your favorite workout:

Biking, or walking long distances.

How do you stay motivated:

Sheer vanity and a mild case of OCD.

I kind of can't wait for maintenance. I miss eating curry and tacos. Also, I'm so over eating sashimi 3x a week. I'm going to die of mercury poisoning, I'm sure.

Health & Support Diet/Exercise when sick? Nov 10 2009

I rarely fall ill, but when I do, I completely lose my appetite and ability to do anything other than lay in bed and sleep. I usually drink a lot of water and have a lot of soup. I make a spicy miso noodle soup that works wonders on my sinuses. I definitely don't work out. I figure it's counter-productive.

Ahhhh! The exact same thing happened to me when I was on Ortho Tri Cyclen Lo. I have no idea what it is with that pill, but it is known to cause mid-cycle bleeding. FYI, I was in no way underweight when I was on Ortho. I have another friend who was on it, and experienced the same bizarre bleeding. I asked my gyno, and she took me off of it and put me on the generic form of Yasmin.

I've been on the pill since I was 15. I switched to Ortho from Yasmin at age 22 because I couldn't get the generic for Yasmin at that time, and I was no longer covered under my parents insurance. I had annoying spotting + mid-cycle bleeding the entire time I was on Ortho, even though I took it in a timely manner. As soon as the generic Yasmin became available to me, I switched back. No side effects to date. I'd try using a different pill, and seeing how that works. If the side effects disappear, then you have your answer.

Weight Loss Baaaad Weekend Question Nov 04 2009
00:00 (UTC)
3

I ate 4 lbs of burrito over the weekend, haha. I had one on Friday, one on Saturday, and a giant one on Sunday. Needless to say, I had the worst intestinal pain/nausea/indigestion on Sunday night/Monday morning. Monday I could hardly eat, and was generally grumpy and miserable due to spending the previous evening curled up in fetal position instead of sleeping. Serves me right for being a glutton, I suppose.

Also: like 5 tacos from the Border Grill Truck while drunk on Friday, and churros on Sunday at Olvera St. for their Day of the Dead celebration. And a bottle of wine (over a few days), along with a mimosa, a bloody mary, brunch at some Cuban place, and 3 glasses of elderflower prosecco. Oh, and half of a red velvet cupcake I baked + a homemade chocolate brain. And salt and vinegar chips at a Halloween party on Saturday. Terrible food with 0 nutritional value, basically.

I'm not really seeing any weight change, despite the feasting. I gained about 3 lbs of water weight, but I've already shed most of that.

I highlight key terms for memorization, and then elaborate on those terms in the word processor (aka take notes). I usually have a half page of notes per two pages of text, and I keep them in order. I don't do whole sentences, it's just too garish and jarring.
