Personally, as a vegetarian, I haven't gone vegan yet because I don't have a problem with animal by-products. If you buy organic, ethical honey, milk, eggs, etc., these are items that would be produced anyway. I don't buy factory eggs, but if I get them from a little place in Wisconsin, I'm cool with that. Milk is another product that, if gathered correctly, doesn't hurt or bother the cow/goat. Cheese derived from these products also seems conflict-free to me. If the animals are treated well and are happy, by-products are just bonus. But health-wise, cutting that stuff out is good for you. I don't eat butter and only minor amounts of cheese once in a while. Eggs are sporadic and honey is better than sugar, but usually only used for tea and peanut butter sandwhiches. And I feel better than I ever have in my life. But if you find it's too hard to eat vegan, just do the best you can. Every little bit helps! |

I spend more money on healthy food alternatives (instead of buying cheap foods that are filling but fattening). I enjoy walking/biking as meditation, and have found that an early morning excursion wakes me up so that I no longer need to drink coffee, which always made me hungry. I force myself to lay down earlier in the evening with a book so that I get at least 7-9 hours of sleep. That ensures that I'll wake up hungry and ready to exercise. I do a lot of sit-ups and crunches, because that stretched, stiff muscle feeling in my stomach reminds me why I shouldn't get that pint of Ben and Jerry's. :)

I find it's easiest if I keep those reusable Glad containers around (the ones with the screw on caps are the best -- no leaking). That way, I know that it won't spill during the commute and so I'm more likely to pack my lunch. And it opens up a world of possibilities (like soup -- if I know it won't spill, I just make it on Sunday and bring it all week). Also dig fig cereal bars from Trader Joe's, Quaker Oats oatmeal and grits, yogurt with granola packed separately, and bananas and apples and pears. You can get through a whole day! And I have a teeny-tiny plastic container for nuts. Perfect portion size. |

Those pills (and other diet pills) have been shown to cause everything from nervous episodes to liver disease to convulsions to heart attacks! Not to sound too preachy, but you need to eat within your calorie limit and exercise and be patient. Don't put your health at risk -- so not worth it. |

Don't let your worry keep you from having a good time with your dad and enjoying your meal! But I get it, I do the same thing, try not to blow the calories at out-to-eat breakfasts/brunches. If you're worried, pick a dish ahead of time and then look up rough calorie contents (you can do it right on this site with the Food Log search or the recipe converter). Or if you're not sure what you'll eat, just pick a few, jot 'em down on a note and carry 'em with you. That way, you're a bit more informed (and so you know that the egg sandwhich cooked in butter may really NOT be the way to go, and you get the musli instead). Whatever you end up doing, just remember that the food isn't really the important part -- it's the visit with your dad. You'll have fun no matter what you eat. And if the coffee is good, that should get you through any situation! :) |

Just one cautionary word -- I started running two years ago, and completed my first half-marathon last January. I love running. BUT, you still have to watch what you eat (and eat appropriately for an athlete) because if you don't you will lose weight, but not as much as you think you might. I lost 8 pounds over two years. AND that guy is right about the long distance running -- it wreaks havoc on your body if you're not used to it. I don't run anymore because I have knee/shoulder/ankle problems from it. And I did a very gradual program. I have weak joints to begin with (whole family does) so I think it's just genetic. I walk now -- 8 miles a day. I've lost more this way than running! Despite all that, running is a wonderful activity! Just take it slow and if you hurt, get braces/supports and talk to your doctor. Read Hal Higgins' book, and really watch what you eat (and try to avoid the Whoppers, which'll slow you down). :) |
