That's a great idea. I'm revising for my PhD viva, so don't have the time to try a new activity, but good luck!

I'm currently at 162 pounds, and going out to a chinese for lunch with work. Argh. I aim to not eat everything on my plate, and do a lot of walking around later on in the day.

Yay for new boots!

My favourite pair of shoes have about 2" heels. I'm 5'8" and people are always like "why are you wearing heels? You're tall enough!"

A- they're my favourite pair of shoes

B- unlike you, I do not have to wear heels to be tall, I wear them to enjoy them ;)

C- heels make you walk more sexily!

I'd love to look great in my bikini this year, so this sounds great! I'm 5'8" and weight about 162 pounds. All the weight sits around my tummy and thighs area. I'd love to get down to 147 pounds by my holiday, but that's only a month and a half away, so I think getting there by September is a better goal for me.

The Lounge Opinions on dorms and meal plans... Jun 12 2009

I went straight into self catered in my first year of university (I'm from the UK, I'm guessing that's the same as no meal plan) and I wouldn't change a thing. I couldn't cook then, and I can't cook now, but there was no way I would have enjoyed the structured meal plans. I think I grew up A LOT having to do the cooking and the shopping for myself. And cooking and eating with friends is a great way to socialise if you don't have much money to spend on other fun things.

I also learned quickly that you cannot survive on beans on toast or supernoodles for longer than a few weeks. ;)

But definitely go into dorms, you'll make friends so quickly, and they'll be for life.

Contact him :) If you don't, you'll always wonder what would have happened if you hadn't, and it could turn into something great- at the very least, more great sex!

Oh, and people with lots of friends on FB aren't  cooler than people with less friends!

Good luck. I have my fingers crossed!

Hi everyone,

I guess I feel like a bit of an intruder, I'm only 5'8" which is not as tall as you guys, but I'd love to join this group as people are always saying to me: "you're not overweight, even if you're heavier than me because you're taller". I'm 163 pounds and want to get down to around 147-ish.

I really feel for you, I had mono a few years back and it really knocked me for six.

I would say, if you feel OK then maybe give your doctor a call and see what they say? Getting out into the fresh air might be a good thing. I didn't feel like doing anything except slobbing out in front of the TV and sleeping when I was ill, but that was me. I reckon your doctor has the best info.

If I had children, I'd rather they had 32 doses of vaccine than get a dose of measles, or whooping cough or diphtheria.

But surely, the CDC (or the one I'm more familar with, the NHS here in the UK) have the best interests of the population as their number one priority? Sure, big pharma have a lot of things wrong with them, but their work has helped to decrease the infant mortality rate from preventable diseases.

But that's off-topic anyway. This is about the MMR vaccine, which helps to decrease the number of jabs kids get.

I think this paragraph is key:

In the Recommended Childhood Immunization Schedule put out by the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), 12 vaccines are given to children before they reach the age of two. Providers inject them against hepatitis B, diphtheria, tetanus (lockjaw), pertussis (whooping cough), polio, pneumococcal infections, Hemophilus influenzae type b infections, measles, mumps, rubella (German measles), chickenpox, and influenza (the flu).

I'd put more faith in the recommendations from the CDC, than from one article by a doctor on a website. All of these diseases are serious.

MMR isn't mandatory in the UK yet, and there's a debate starting about whether it should be or not. I think that's where this discussion came from.

Surely, another argument is that since the 60s and 70s, diagnosis of autism has improved, and that's why there appears to be a correlation between the cases of autism and vaccination? I think the general public has got too complacent about infectious diseases, and has forgotten the damage and havoc they can cause.

Hmm, I don't. But the last few weddings I've been to, people have used native American verses, they can be really pretty. And my dad did a toast for his sister's birthday a few weeks ago with things that were invented or people that were born in the same year as her. That was quite funny.

Good luck!

I have a saying that gets me through the day: people are stupid. It can be applied to so many different situations. When people start bugging me, I just say to myself "people are stupid". That's my other place!

It's really silly, all the biology degree courses at my uni needed chemistry to A-Level (the exams we do at 18) and no biology!

I would say that teaching yourself chemistry from a textbook would be really hard. Chemistry is all about the stuff you get to do in lab classes :) So I'm definitely agreeing with all the people who say that you should try and get yourself into a summer class.

I have co-workers like that, so I feel your pain.

"You should be eating at least 2000 calories a day, just step up the exercise and you'll lose weight".

They just don't get it.

Vaccinations don't work unless the vast majority of people are protected. It's called herd protection. It's controversial, but I think it should be made compulsory unless there's a valid reason not to have it (for example, my mum had epilespy when I was younger, so I had the single jabs, and now it's a pain in the ass as I don't know whether I've had the correct booster or not).

People have forgotten how damaging measles can be. The doctor who published the research has been completely discredited, and there is no link between autism and the MMR- I find it disgusting that the media haven't reported on the multitude of studies out there, published in peer-reviewed journals, that have shown this time and time again. It's difficult once there is a seed of doubt in the mind, but IMHO the benefits of having the MMR are huge.

This morning, on the BBC, they made a comment about how this whole thing was the fault of the media, and then four seconds later the presenter made some comment, I can't remember exactly what it was, that was along the exact same lines as the reporting that started this whole thing! It's shocking.

Anyway, just my opinion. :)

That's awful. :( You are obviously not fat, and I agree with others that it's probably your mum's insecurities showing themselves as nasty comments to you. When I was younger, mum used to comment on how bad my skin was (actually, she still does it now and I'm 25!); OK, I have never had perfect skin but I also never had anything as bad as acne, and telling me I had bad skin didn't help. I went down the wrong road and used to make nasty comments back- I'm just mentioning this because I think it's the wrong way to go. She'd get mad, then I'd get mad, and we lost many days of not speaking to each other because of it.

Try and be positive with her. When she puts you down, explain that you're in control of your body and you're doing things your way- she should be proud of you! Maybe she has some body issues of her own that she's taking out on you. With the ice cream thing, how about you say that she's welcome to buy it if she wants to eat it- you know that eating ice cream will intefere with your plans, and you're a strong enough person to resist it? Maybe point out some female athletes who, like yourself, have a more muscular physique? They look far, far better IMHO than skinny models.

Good luck, and try not to let her negativity get you off the right track.

Maintaining UK people - clothing sizes there? help Jun 02 2009
12:38 (UTC)

UK clothing sizes are awful. They're so inconsistent! I can be a 10 in tops in some shops, and a 14 in others. Trousers range from 12 to 16!

So, I would say brave the queues and try everything on. It's the only way you're going to know if something fits.

Weight Loss Boredom Snacking May 20 2009

Weight Loss Stop snacking during exams May 20 2009

I'm kind of in the same boat but not really...I've just written up my thesis after my PhD and sitting down at 4 months after being active in the lab for 3 1/2 years has really made me add on the pounds! I was the same during exams too, and it was difficult for me not to eat when I was bored. My way of dealing with it was to forget about watching what I ate until exams were over: not the best way of dealing with it! And now here I am, with extras poundage and trying to lose them.

Good luck for your exams!
