Well, I don't know all of the answers, but I can help you out with the long work days.  I learned from The End of Overeating that different types of nutrients leave the stomach at different rates.  Fats and protein stay in your stomach longer.  I think fat exits at 2 calories per minute, while protein exits at 4 calories per minute.  Because I work at dinner time and evenings, I usually eat a very high protein dinner around 3 or so and it keeps me full or at least not terribly hungry for at least three for four hours.  You might try to eat one and a half chicken breasts before work and see if that holds you.  It will also bump up your calorie intake to a more normal level.  If you can combine a protein with a higher fiber such (cheese stick and apple, carrot sticks and tiny bit of peanut butter, boiled egg and slice of whole wheat toast, yogurt and fiber one) then you will stay full longer and up your intake in a very healthy way.

That is such a huge accomplishment, icat_7!  I know that I have gained weight on seemingly every vacation I had ever taken until this summer.

Yes, it makes a huge difference, but you need to do some research on what types of fuel you need to add to your diet.  You need some carbs around 30-40 mins. before any kind of workout.  Just 75-100 calories' worth will do.  Then, you need something with protein, carbs and tiny little bit of fat afterwards.  The quantity seems to depend on how much, how intense and what type of exercise you do.  You should do some research about it.

My own story is that while training for my first half marathon six years ago, I did not fuel (eat) properly before my training sessions and the actual half marathon and had a difficult time maintaining weight, performing well and had a lot of stomach problems, such as constant indigestion.  The next time around, I got smarter about taking the right types of nutrients (carb/ protein) before and after workouts, and feel a 1000% better and the workouts and daily life are so much better.  I also started at around 160-165 spring 2008, dropped down to 135 and maintained ever since then.  I am actually at 132 this morning because of good fuel timing and better nutrition.  I'm not perfect at all, but I can at least share this much.  :)

I love it.  You can't really take out 150 calories worth of fat from a food and expect it to have the same texture and taste.  But, PB2 is still really good.  I add a tsp of honey to it before mixing in the water to give it a better texture.  The honey adds very few calories but makes the texture a lot more like natural peanut butter.  Honestly, if you put some PB2 on All Bran fiber crackers with a little cinnamon, it makes the yummiest snack.

Thanks, Samantha81.

"Giving myself a break" for special occasions and making exceptions is how I gained weight in the first place.  I needed to find a way to truly work my lifestyle into every aspect of my life, including extended vacations.

I didn't gain any weight and also didn't feel deprived.  I can't exercise much because I have a foot injury, so I measured my food as much as possible and stuck with plain salads and whole foods when eating out. I turned into the substitution queen and by the end of the trip though nothing of completely changing the listed menu item into something much healthier just through subbing things out, requesting items on the side or removed entirely.  Instead of ordering sweets and desserts, I ordered familiar brands of beer in bottles, because I know what the damage would be.

My discipline actually had a positive effect on the relatives I visited, because we played active games outside most of the time and ate healthy snacks such as fruit and veggies, instead of cookies and chips.   We made some really good memories.  It was great!

hooray, fresh everything is so much easier to manage

It's all the eating out and prepackaged stuff that worries me.  I might just go to a grocery store there and do easy picnic sandwiches and walks around town with DH.

You are such a caring mom.  A lot of moms wouldn't even ask if there was a *kind* way to get involved.  As a formerly obese teen girl, I'd say leave it alone.  She has to come to the health realization on her own terms.  But don't fear, she will come to the realization eventually.  Just be there to love and support when she decides to make the changes.    I lost the weight my last year of high school, kept it off *all* through college and lost even more, but not too much, and only put on weight on after college for a brief period of time because of depression.  I never gained the freshman 10.  I even lost some because I could finally control my own diet, and not really on my father's slightly eating disordered (compulsive overeating) decisions.  Now, it's gone again.  For some of us, it's just another lesson to learn while we grow up.   :)

Physical activity helped me lose the weight in high school, so I didn't really diet.  Then, in college, I was able to take dance, aerobics, and swimming classes for credit, and it was really fun.  It was easier in college because I didn't know anyone and didn't feel so self-conscious.  Maybe you could take her to some fun dance classes the next town over. Teenage girls are probably the most viscious, nasty people on earth, and she might be hiding inside because she is embarassed about being seen exercising.  Is there some way that you could make her feel less self-conscious about exercising?  I don't even know if that's her problem, but it was a major problem for me.  She probably wants to do sports and get involved but feels self-conscious.  Perhaps you two could do something fun, for example, the race for the cure walks.

Life isn't fair.  Get over it.  You're a grown up and should be able to deal with people who have opinions that are different from yours.    You have the right to be offended, so be offended.  But you don't have the right to shut down other people's discussions, unless they violate the terms of the website by, say, verbally abusing someone.  This is a public forum, and there are threads for seemingly every opinion and belief.  If you don't like it, go to another thread.

@ the OP, it's probably because of several reasons, just like the many reasons that people decide to be fat.  It's safe; for others, it's a distraction; meanwhile, for some it makes you feel like you are in control; furthermore, some feel like they are pleasing someone; thus, in a  gazillion little ways and for many reasons people decide to be what they are, in this case on the low end of the BMI scale.

Also - why is it so mean in here?  Just when I thought that CC was past this.  I hadn't seen any skinny-bashing in like 3 months.   Guess I just wasn't looking hard enough.

apfel - hey, why don't YOU grow up and not butt your nose into other people's arguments to make meaningless and rude statements which don't contribute to the discussion except to personally put down one member?   Your post was even less critically argumentative than hers.

Glad to see you're exercising your right to free speech within the limitations of CC.  :)

Look who's the pot calling the kettle black.   Aren't you being judgmental by calling my statements rude and mean?  Can you read my mind?  No.  By the way, allcaps represents yelling when used in online communication.  Please refrain from yelling.  Thanks.  :)

@ the OP, glad to hear that you are in a good place and happy with yourself again.

I think this is SO unfair for anyone to say! And where I understand where you're coming from, it's ridiculous to say that anyone trying to make themselves look good is in some way disordered. I'm very much offended by your post, and I think it's small minded and unfair. I'm 6'1" and 153, which makes my BMI pretty low, but BMI means almost nothing. I'm healthy, I eat a lot, I work out, and YES I have a small frame for my height. I'm glad that a BMI of 24 or whatever works for some of you, seriously! Do what you do! Love the way you look! But for those of us who have a different body composition and are not even worried about BMI, please don't be rude and tell us that we have all of these various things wrong with us, when that is NOT the case.

Hey, don't beat yourself up, mutoko78. At least you are being honest about it and taking the time to notice and learn from it.  I used to do that more often, too, I think just because I was bored.  I am getting much better about it, but sometimes with soup or if too much time goes by between meals I eat until I almost feel uncomfortably full.  It's a process, so every meal is a learning experience, right?  :)

You know yourself and what you can handle.  IDK-You are probably stronger than me.  It seems like as soon as I set a food rule, then I break it! So I pretty much don't have any rules about what or when to eat.  It's just the calorie count that matters to me.  IMO if you have to make a strict rule about food, cigarettes, alcohol, etc. then you are probably setting yourself up for failure and the rule probably indicates a more serious problem.  I am no shrink, but maybe you should explore why it is that you want to set up such a strict and probably soon to be frustrating rule.    It might be better to just replace around 80% of the meat you purchase with other forms of protein, such as cheese, tofu and other fake meat or texturized protein, legumes, eggs, nuts and so on.  Because you won't have as much meat in the house, you will be forced to choose alternatives but it won't force you to do it during a specific time during the day and it won't make you have night binges.

Hello everyone,

I'd like to join, too.  I just have 6 more pounds to go.  I started last spring at 160 and am at 134 now.  I have a foot injury that is keeping me from exercising, so it is all diet for me.   I had my metabolism tested after the injury, and luckily I have a very fast metablism, so my burn rate is around 1850.  I am eating somewhere around 1500 cals/ day.   :)

Thanks for starting this thread.

Foods If I drain and wash the fat off the ground beef, will it be healthier? May 27 2009

I'll see your rinsing of the burgers and raise you!  I've actually BOILED hamburgers before.   Yep!

It started when my vet suggested I do that to get my finicky dog eating, and boy, did it work.  Then I decided to try it myself one day, figuring it would be reduced fat, right?  All I can say, is it's not as good eaten as a "burger" - however it's perfectly good for putting in spaghetti sauce, chili, etc.  MUCH less greasiness, and it seems to crumble smaller, more easily.

Would you please explain this?  Do you mean that you just put the ground beef in boiling water and then drain it?  Does that boil out all the flavor?

To those people who are telling us to be positive: We could be polyanna about this, but stuffing our negative emotions and avoiding our negative emotions by eating is probably one of the ways that some of us got fat in the first place.  Stop telling us what to feel and how to respond and let us share.  We will ask for coaching when we need it.  It seems to me that this post is not about doing and fixing our brokeness; it's about sharing and bonding and being 100% responsible for ourselves, including our negative emotions.  Maybe it's time that some of us get to stop people-pleasing (putting on the old, facade, the happy fat person mask) and time that some of us let ourselves feel these powerful emotions openly and work through them on our own terms without turning to food and without doing it for others.  It is bittersweet to know that I am not the only one, and I'm not crazy or weird and that other people deal with these kinds of emotions.  It is a relief actually.

anxiety-I can't stuff my face when I am bored, and now I am alone with myself and don't know what to do.  I actually have to face what it is that I want and need to do.  Because I can't waste my time by stuffing my face with food, I now have more time to do what I say I dream of doing or need to get done.

fear of rejection/anxiety- Also, I now feel anxiety and fear of rejection, because I am reaching out to new people and friends to chat every time I feel like snacking.  It really causes me anxiety, because these relationships are really not that strong yet and I always have that split second of fear fo rejection.  I am also afraid of letting them depend on me and know the real me.  It's as though they'll reject me if they knew who I really was.

fear-Now that I am not distracted by food, I feel fear about confronting the real me and finding out that some things about me might be a lie or different from what I real want or am.  What if I don't really want to do what I thought I wanted to do?  What if that is not what I really wanted? Was I avoiding this confrontation by sabotaging myself and using up my time with food?  What is that all about?  This is a completely new revelation for me.   This observation of self-sabotage via food is a new observation and probably sounds insignificant to you, but it is huge for me.

out of touch-I felt and still feel like a child learning a new language-the language of my body.  It's as though I still don't know my body's ways of communicating with me.  For example, sometimes I feel hungry but a 16 ounce ground of water with ice and lemon makes the feeling go away.  That is just bizarre!  I can't tell you how many times I used to just reach for a handful of peanuts or eat a 100 or 200 calorie snack bar when I felt that way.   Also, the feeling I used to interpret as fullness was actually uncomfortable indigestiony fullness.  What was that all about?  Now, I am starting to learn that fullness is just the feeling of not been hungry.  It's a complete revelation, again.  It's like having a thirty year marriage and waking up one day and realizing that you don't know anythng about the person you married.  It's scary, humbling and shocking.

Although I lost 30 pounds using CC last summer, I am still learning so much and developing a much more nuanced understanding of myself.  I signed up again this summer to watch my calories while I recurperate from a foot injury that prevents me from exercising.

Yeah, ok, it's not just me.  I just saw some third party information that confirmed the fishy taste.  I guess it's omega 3 that helps to give fish its flavor, but it is too strong in breakfasty eggs.  The turkey burger was fine, though.  I think I'm going to stick to regular eggs for breakfast and snacks.  :)

Not to butt in, but I just want to add that people often visit sites that propound the beliefs they hold, so everyone on the site is just going back and forth reiterating the same opinion or belief.  There is no real debate going on.  If someone comes into the chat room and disrupts the echo chamber, people on that site are prone to being reactionary and responding as such.  Lots of people, including some prominent figures on this site, are guilty of such reactionary responses-not the likable ones, of course.  :)

I seem to remember that someone has studied this phenomenon recently.   I'm just saying...
