| Weight Loss | What are some healthy changes that you've made in how you eat? | Jul 18 2009 03:16 (UTC) |
38 |
great post! i think the healthiest change i have made is just plain reducing how much i eat, following serving sizes. I have always had a pretty balanced diet with fairly good food choices, so i think this is the best change i have made. another thing i have done is cut waaaaaaay back on diet soda (i only drink diet). i have found that it really makes me retain water. instead, i drink water and flavor it with lemons, limes, orange slices, etc. that way i am getting something more than plain water (and a little extra vitamin c as well). occasionally i will still have a diet coke but i can definitely feel the difference in the water retention. oh there is one other healthy change i forgot - i dropped the fully loaded vanilla lattes - i was drinking 3-4 of these a week. now i rarely have one but when i do i go for the skinny version (skim milk, sugar-free syrup). i agree with you on the completely fat-free foods - yuck - they taste way to fake to me. although, i do eat fat-free yoplait yogurt. i don't even really eat lo-fat versions of some foods - i am afraid that they are compensating with something that is worse for you. artificial sweeteners freak me out especially. |

| Weight Loss | Popcorn revelation | Jul 18 2009 03:06 (UTC) |
15 |
what popcorn is only 15 calories per serving with three servings per bag? can that be right? when i look up air popped popcorn on CC, it says 30 calories for one cup (popped). so that means 15 calories would be only 1/2 cup - not very much - and that is with no oil, butter, etc. |

| Weight Loss | Buddy System - 15 pounds to loose | Jul 17 2009 19:01 (UTC) |
5 |
I'll join you! My current weight is 149 and my goal weight is 135. I have lost 12 pounds so far. My first mini-goal was 145, but since I am close to that, I have changed my goal on the CC website to 140. When i reach 145, i will change it again. It is easier for me to deal with several small goals rather than one big goal at a time. I will weigh in on Mondays with you, starting on the 20th. Add me as a friend and we can motivate each other. |

| Weight Loss | Size 8-10.... not normal? :( | Jul 17 2009 03:20 (UTC) |
34 |
allykins - size, weight, etc - they are all just numbers. like other posts have said, there are so many other factors - body shape, muscle, bone size, breast size, etc. i am 5'4, am 148 lbs. and wear a size 10. i am chubby, but not what most people would consider fat (i once was up to a size 14 - that was fat). i will be absolutely estatic to be in a size eight. after that i dont think my body can physically get much smaller (unless i lose muscle and have breast reduction surgery). i believe a size 8/10 is actually average. don't sweat it. |

| Fitness | Calorie Target Calculator Question | Jul 01 2009 20:20 (UTC) |
1 |
i set mine to 'light' activity. i have a desk job, but i am often up and moving around (in fact, i get up regularly just for this purpose). at home, i am not a couch potato - rareley am i sitting down to watch t.v. or read a book. i am always on the go - kids ballgames, errands, housework, yardwork or whatever. i walk the dog regularly every morning. this seems to be working for me - i don't log extra activity unless it is something i am doing that i wasn't doing before counting calories. my calorie allowance is 1378 per day and my burn meter (with my level set at light activity) says i burn 1830 calories a day. it must be pretty close because i have lost almost 11.6 pounds in 5.5 weeks. hope this helps! |

I am the same as minda . . . have always been a 38DD. A few years back, i lost 20 pounds and only shrunk to 36D (in some bras, others still the DD). it is not fun - shopping is horendous - you can't wear the all the sexy bras, cute tops, dresses, swim suits etc. because they just don't come that big. sometimes you can find things mail order, but then they cost a fortune. to complicate things, i am also short. i cannot wear blouses because by the time i get one large enough to fit the chest, they are too big everywhere else. they definitely make running and excercise in general more challenging. on the plus side (no pun intended) they do help balance the figure out. even when i have been my heaviest, i have had an hourglass figure - just a larger hourglass! i had once considered having reduction surgery and my husband at the time was strongly opposed . . . i remember once my sister, in my defense, had said to him 'strap two five pound bags of sugar around your neck for a week and see how you feel'. LOL. I do wonder sometimes how much they really do weigh. |

i agree with everything "lindinig" said! this happened to me also. a few years back, right after i got divorced, i lost a lot of weight - 15-20 pounds (without even hardly trying - i think it was lack of stress). anyway, then i met a guy, we started dating and four years later i put on about 10 pounds of what I had lost. and it was all due to lifestyle change - eating out, eating ice cream together 3-4 nights a week, drinking more, exercising less, etc. etc. don't fall into this trap! like the previous post said - plan ahead when going out to eat, eat half of what you order and bring the other half home, order 'light' beer instead of mega-calorie drinks . . . you can do it! |

i am the same way right before aunt flo arrives, and for the first day or so. i read that right before mentsruation, your body is at its highest BMR - so, that would make sense . . . i also read that during you are losing some nutrients. things to avoid are simple carbs and salt - the obvious and of course the things we crave also! oh, and drink extra water |

it would definitely influence my choices. yesterday, we brought the kids to my moms pool and decided in advance to pick up KFC for dinner. so, i went to their website to look at the nutrition info. i was pleased that i could plan a meal with this tool that wasn't way overboard in the calories department. you can eat fast food if you choose wisely. not something i do often, but good to know it can be done. btw, kfc's grilled chicken is pretty good! |

i swear i gain about 5 lbs, but my last cycle (which was the first one since i started on here) i think i gained 2.5 pounds one day but lost it all by the end of the week. i think i read that if you drink even more water than you already do, it will help. oh, and avoid salt even more. |

| Weight Loss | Booze. heh | Jun 27 2009 04:10 (UTC) |

i'm with you on this one . . . the biggest change for me was cutting out beer. i was up to 2-3 beers a night. when i got home from work, it was the first thing i did - crack open a beer. i tried the lowest calorie beer i could find and it was terrible. maybe it is like getting used to lo-fat foods or diet pop, i don't know but i gave up on it anyway. i had been gaining weight steadily for the past few years and i think the biggest factor was the beer. i can thank my husband for that - he is a beer drinker (but doesn't make him gain an ounce). now, i will have a beer maybe three times a week, and i factor it in to my calorie count for the day. but there are those times - like with your friends, when you want to let loose a little more. i had this happen to me a couple of weekends ago - 27 of us went on a weekend fish launch (a.k.a. boose cruise) and we had it planned for a long time. so, i wasn't about to be the only one not drinking. i didn't drink as much as some people (not like everyone was falling down drunk or anything - well, maybe one person lol) but i did have more than one or two. i made sure i ate healthy all week prior to the event, had just a little lower calories than i normally eat. everything turned out fine - i did't gain five pounds overnight - actually didn't gain anything. but the best part was - i had a great time, and i felt great the next day because i didn't drink too much. I guess what i am trying to say is go ahead and let yourself have a good time every once in a great while but not all the time. afterall, alcohol is loaded with calories and if not used in moderation, will pack on the pounds fast. |

I get up at 5:10 a.m., go for a 30 minute walk, then eat breakfast, and then do some strength excercises. that is what works best for me. i like to get my walk in before the kids wake up. |

| Weight Loss | Suddenly Confused...? | Jun 26 2009 19:14 (UTC) |

I think the general idea is to have a 500 calorie deficit each day. anymore than that and your metabolism could go into defense mode and not burn fat (or something that that effect). so, if you are exercising and burning more calories, your diet should compensate so that your deficit isn't to great. |

| Weight Loss | Diet MEans No Sugar,chocolates,cakes ... or what?? HELP!!! | Jun 25 2009 15:15 (UTC) |
7 |
Yesterday was my son's 13th birthday and I am happy to say that I had a piece of chocolate cake and ice cream - and stayed within my daily calorie allowance. It is definitely do-able, but I would follow these guidelines: A - plan for it, make sure that you will have enough calories to spend on your treat B - FOLLOW the serving sizes (this is true with any food) - when the ice cream container says one serving is 1/2 cup, only have 1/2 cup - or less C - eat slowly - savor every bite. too easy to eat too much if you inhale it. D - don't have treats too often, or they won't be treats I have actually found that as I have been eating better I haven't even hardly craved many treats (with the exception of my two dove chocolates every other day that I allot for). The key is everything in moderation - I have not cut any food from my diet. Last weekend I even had fettucine alfredo - only about 1/4-1/2 cup, but it was just enough and so worth it! |

i count nearly everything and measure everything when i can, including cream, sugar, dressing, etc. the one exception would be my altoid mints. i don't actually log those - but i know that three of them are ten calories. since i usually am under my calorie intake each day, i don't worry about those extra 10 calories. it would be nice to be able to 'guesstimate' some serving sizes, for when you are eating out or away from home. for isntance, how big of a piece of chicken breast is 4 oz.?? i know there are some old standard guidelines but i cannot remember them . . . |

| Weight Loss | Can you eat chocolate and still lose weight? | Jun 18 2009 15:02 (UTC) |
2 |
Original Post by jcl76: Ditto! Two pieces - I factor in the calories into my daily allowance. It is just enough to satisfy that sweet craving. Deny yourself and you are headed for trouble! Besides, who says chocolate is bad for you? In large quantities yes, but small doses can be beneficial. The key to most everything in life is MODERATION! |

| Foods | Pillsbury Cinnamon Rolls! | Jun 18 2009 14:29 (UTC) |

Caribou Coffee Large Vanilla Latte . . . loved those. Now as a treat I will sometimes order the small skinny latte with sugar free flavoring - only about 100 calories. Dove chocolates - used to eat them all day at work, esp. in the winter. Each little piece is 44 calories so they add up! Now, as a treat and if my calorie allowance allows, I will eat just two. I take two out of the bag and set them out, a mental note to myself that that is all I can have - rather than continually reaching into the bag for one more . . . I don't believe in cutting much out of my diet - that could lead to a binging disaster. Rather, I like to take things in moderation. Have that piece of cheesecake, but only have 1/4 to 1/2 the size you did before. |
