Weight Gain a little embarassing but... Nov 16 2009

hey there!

As a fellow IBS sufferer, I completely understand! It's super embarrassing and entirely unpleasant.  For the past two years I've been using activated charcoal tablets for both bloating and gas issues.  I buy the vegetarian charcoal pills from Whole Foods (although I'm sure you could find them at any other health food store) and will take 2 before a 'trigger' meal as a prophylactic, or when I'm having a bloat/gassy episode.  The charcoal helps absorb any excess gases that are in your digestive tract and I've always been pretty happy with the result.

Good luck!

Alrighty, I know that I already posted yesterday, but since today is the official weigh in check up...here it goes!

Current weight: 116.5 (1.5 lb loss)

I'm going to D.C. for a conference this coming week so I need to be extra-vigilant! It's hard to keep track of calories when you're eating out all the time..

I'd definitely have to second nikijanestorey here. The most important factor when weighing yourself is consistency. Weigh yourself at the same time of day and then you'll be able to accurately assess weight change.

True weight is a tricky thing - most scales differ slightly.  The only way (to my knowledge) that one could learn one's "true" weight would be to perform a water displacement test.

Also, the nutrients that you consume one day don't magically pass through your system by morning. Water retention due to dehydration/high sodium intake can affect a subsequent day as well. Your body isn't this blank canvas devoid of yesterday's intake by morning.

Bleurgh. I'm not sure if 5 lbs is going to be all that realistic for me...I've lost a pound (done to 117) so far.

I'd say that my hardest thing is not to succumb to late night pointless snacking.

Thanks for all your responses guys! I think that I might definitely try canuckabroad's suggestion (and not just because I'm also Canadian! :)) I really really love this class and I would hate anything to be awkward so I think that I'll just try to ease into it...

I've never used a yoga DVD so I can't give you any help there.

Good luck!

I LOVE yoga!! I've been doing it for about 4 years now, but much more intensively during the summer months.  The yoga classes at my university always seem to be scheduled during labs :(

You're completely right about the power of yoga when it comes to decreasing stress, increasing flexibility, strength and balance! If you're mindful, proper yoga actually means that your core is engaged throughout your entire practice which does great things for toning the tummy and helping with balance.  I know that yoga has also helped me 'quiet my mind' which helps with stress and sleep deprivation.

If you're just getting started with yoga, I would suggest doing a couple beginners classes and then work your way into Vinyasa which is a practice where your movement is synchronized with your breath.  Depending on the class level, you can get a pretty good full-body muscle workout doing Vinyasa for an hour or so! I'm not sure if there are any yoga studios or gyms that offer yoga classes where you live, but if there are, you should ask and see if you could do some trial classes to see if you like it, and then you could get started off with yoga for free!

Fitness Help! Bicycle commuting! Jul 17 2009

First off, congratulations on becoming a bicycle commuter!

I bike to work (12 miles each way) every day and find it's a really great way to get exercise in without taking too much time out of my already crazy schedule.

I'm a HUGE fan of pit zips (the zippers that extend from the under side of your jacket sleeve to just below your armpits) that you can open up when it's kind of chilly or rainy, but you're still working up a sweat.

Another great bike addition for commuters are panniers which are kind of like little saddlebags that you can mount on your back tire to hold a change of clothes, deodorant (a must) and even files or documents.

As for rain, I have a visor on my helmet that helps keep it out of my eyes and I always wear gloves (halfsies in summer, full fingers in winter) which helps keep your hands from slipping on the handlebars.  To keep your head a bit drier and if you have pretty short hair, my brother uses a kind of skullcap thing that absorbs sweat but also keeps his head dry when rain comes between his helmet slots.  And if you're not too afraid to look a little geeky, you can stash a showercap in your camelbak and put that over your helmet when it starts to pour.

Vegetarian Low-fat, low-salt, good-tasting? Need a new cookbook. Jul 14 2009

Hi there!

I've been vegetarian for nearly 3 years now and I love it! One of things with cooking vegetarian is that dishes are soo colorful.  If you're trying to cut sodium from your diet, you should definitely look for dishes that include A LOT of other spices that will definitely pack in the flavor without using salt. That's one of the reasons why I love Indian and Thai inspired foods.

I'm a big fan of Vegetarian Times: fast and easy, great foods you can make in minutes and also Steven Raichlen's high-flavor, low fat vegetarian cooking.

The pictures and explanations are fantastic and I'm pretty sure both have nutritional info.

Good luck!

Hey summer_moth,

Don't be too disheartened, drinking alcohol can cause water retention (and therefore morning after weight gain) especially since it's a diuretic and so dehydrating.  Try and rehydrate, exercise and see if the scale drops back down!

Oh, and pizza can also contain A LOT of sodium with all that cheese and depending on the toppings (i.e. pepperoni, sausage) which can cause water retention too

Hey again!

I hope that those activated charcoal pills help.  If you ever have any questions as far as frustration or troubles concerning digestion or IBS, please don't hesitate to e-mail me! I've been dealing with it for about 1.5 years now and I still feel awkward talking about those issues with people other than my best friends and family, so sometimes it's nice to have a neutral, pseudo-anonymous third party.

All the best!

I have IBS so I frequently have to deal with bloating issues and I lLOVE the tip that elizaveta_joy gave! Both mint and ginger (and any teas with dandelion) are really good for digestion and cleansing.  If I know that I'm going to be eating a 'trigger' food or if I'm feeling really bloated I'll also take 2 vegetarian charcoal capsules.  You know how they used to use charcoal as an emetic and to absorb toxins (still do actually), well it also works really well in small doses to absorb excess gases and toxins. I buy mine at Whole Foods in the digestive section.

Good luck!

Weight Loss I just don't get the calorie thing... Jul 04 2009

Actually the body can break down fat into a glycolytic subunit.  Glucose is the energy of choice because it leads into glycolysis and then into the TCA/Kreb's/Citric Acid Cycle as pyruvate and then into the Electron Transport Chain (assuming that your body is operating under aerobic conditions).  For every 1 glucose your body gets 36 ATP which is the most basic biological energy 'currency'.

While your metabolism prefers to break down carbohydrates (like glucose), if you're mounting a moderate caloric deficient it will break down fats through beta oxidation into pyruvate and fatty acids that through a series of further modifications can enter into the TCA cycle and generate ATP.  The reason why your body stores energy in the form of fat is that it's much more stable and harder to break down than sugars.  Its an evolutionary way to ensure survival during hard times.  If the body has no adipose fat deposits to break down and you aren't consuming enough fats, it starts to break down proteins.  If you aren't consuming adequate levels of 'food energy' and you have no fat stored your body will start metabolizing it's own protein starting with those stored in the liver and the muscles.

Weight Loss Eating too little? Jul 03 2009
19:19 (UTC)

Thank you all for your input, but perhaps I should have clarified.

First off, I've been vegetarian and lactose intolerant for the past 4 years, so upping my dairy and meat isn't an option.  I eat high protein foods such as tofu, plenty of beans and legumes, soy and quinoa.  Secondly, I'm 21 years old which I don't think qualifies as a child so I really don't think that I can eat 2700 + calories and not gain weight.  I have a small frame and really felt best when I was at 110 lbs.

I will try to add in more nuts as those don't seem to upset my digestion but very creamy and 'fatty' foods always trigger an episode.  I have to eat a diet very high in fiber in order to be 'regular' as I have the constipation subtype of IBS. I feel like the high fiber and my heavy fruits and vegetables are probably contributing more to my fullness and lack of appetite than anything else.

Is there anyone on here with comparable digestive problems?

I love adding silken tofu to fruit smoothies; it's a great source of protein and really smooths it up.
