some fruits are naturally very high in sugar: watermelon, ripe banana, pineapple, grapes. perhaps if you eat fruits that are lower in sugar: raspberries, blueberries, honeydew melon, apricots etc.

good luck!

Hi everyone!
I'm 40 years old and really happy to see a thread dedicated to us. It's disheartening reading all the posts from 18 year olds: i can't relate!

Cheryl, sshhh... but I don't really commit to counting calories either. I have been trying for a long time but I realise that I don't believe that all calories are created equal. I think I am borderline insulin resistant (is that possible?).
10 years ago I did SugarBusters and felt fantastic: full of energy, and lost weight effortlessly. It was easy to follow. Anyway, I've been eating low carb on and off for a while but have committed to sticking with it for a long while this time around. I will look into Schwarzbein Principle since I've never heard of it.

Thanks everyone! It's really nice to meet you and hear your stories.

Maintaining It's 10pm, I've only had 1700 cal, I'm supposed to have 2100 cal per day - eat or not? Apr 17 2008

IMHO, don't eat.
you're not going to go into starvation mode after one day on 1700 calories. go to sleep and then wake up tomorrow and have a good, healthy breakfast. also, figure out why you got to 10pm and only ate 1700 cals. good luck!

for cosmetics i use bareescentuals mineral powder makeup.
it gives me flawless coverage and my bad skin looks BETTER after using this make up
as for being lazy and tired at the end of the night, i am totally with you on that.
i try to clean my face and teeth really early in the evening (like 7pm) so that by the time bedtime comes along, i can flop to bed and not go through the hassle of a routine!

hi theashster
i cut out sugars several months back and have never felt better. i have more energy, less headaches, less mood swings, less hunger pangs. i can literally jump out of bed in the morning.
if i do have a piece of chocolate or something, i instantly get a headache and feel nauseous. if i have the chocolate at night (or even popcorn (high carbs)) the next morning i feel like i was hit by a truck... as if i'm hung over but without having had anything to drink.

sugar is a toxin.
we've only started eating lots of sugar since a very recent period (in evolutionary terms). in other words, our bodies have not yet evolved to the point where we can adequately digest and deal with such huge amounts of refined sugars.

i've heard it takes 21 days to incorporate a new habit. and that's about right for me for cutting sugars out.
try it for a full three weeks. do NOT cheat .... you will be amazed at the difference.

headaches, irritability, moodiness is your bodies way of asking for its drug back. its withdrawal. you will experience it... but think of it this way... if your body has to go through withdrawal from something, doesn't that kind of mean it shouldn't have had it in the first place?

sorry for the long post.
i found it helpful to use the word "poison" instead of "sugar" or "chocolate" :-) it might sound strange but when you are telling yourself "oh, i'll just have one piece of poison" it's a whole lot easier to say no

good luck! you won't regret it.
Foods cutting out dairy Oct 13 2007

thanks josna and skinny,
i decided to cut out virtually all dairy.
the first thing i did was buy a selection of replacement products: rice milk, oat milk, soy milk ... so that i could find the one that tasted best.

then, it was really easy to stop using milk since i already had a substitute at home.
i carry little tetra-paks of rice milk so that when i'm at work, i can add it to my coffee instead of adding milk.

all this to say... i haven't changed my diet in ANY way except cutting out almost all dairy and i am AMAZED and delighted and pleased with how my skin looks.
my skin is much smoother, less red and no more itchiness!!!
it is not completely cured but it's definitely better.
and all of this after just a very short period.
i tried all the creams before and they didn't work for me. cutting out dairy has made a big difference in a short period.
hopefully, if you have a new skin lotion and you cut out dairy, your skin will soon be glowing.
thanks again!

hil.

i feel that sometimes it's hard for our families to deal with big weight loss because it's a big change for them. they are scared that you are no longer the person they know and love. with time, they will stop being scared and be supportive. in the meantime, way to go!
big big congratulations... you look great!

nycgirl and ratinhat... i was thinking EXACTLY the same as you that it was impossible to see it going in the other direction since it was so so so clearly turning clockwise.
then i went back and looked at a corner and imagined what it would be like to see it going in the opposite direction and it did!!

hi josna... i have a question not an answer.
i decided (just today) to cut out dairy. i have mildly bad skin (rosacea) but i never made the link to dairy.
i had decided to cut out dairy for other reasons.

do you know where can i get more info on the link between dairy consumption and skin problems?
thanks!

ohio45...
glad i could help... and guess what? i'm irish too!
so i know allllll about loving potato soup, and mashed potatoes, cooked potatoes put through a ricer (! i haven't thought of that in years!!) etc. etc.
believe it or not, you'll find your craving for potatoes will diminish too, just like any other carb

here's a wee challenge for you... do your best to cut out bad carbs for three weeks. not even one idaho potato. substitute some of the stuff i mentioned, including sweet potatoes (which are delicious, IMHO).
you'll see it will become automatic.
after three weeks, have some mashed potatoes, or some white bread or something sweet (some bad carbs).
i can pretty much guarantee you'll feel sick :-( (i know i DO!)

now you may wonder why i would want to inflict that on anyone (i really DON"T want you to feel sick!!) but it's perfect proof at how much our bodies can NOT handle carbs.
they're kind of toxic to our system.
besides, if you can cut out bad carbs for three weeks, i can also guarantee you'll have more energy than ever before too. you'll jump out of bed in the morning!!
if you do try this, just remember to drink lots of water (extra water if you've upped your protein as a result. your body needs more water to process protein).

good luck and let us know how it goes!! i really hope it works for you.

All calories are not created equal!
Calories from sugars (high GI foods) affect your body, blood, organs and hormones differently than the exact same number of calories from protein or from lower GI foods.
I don't fully understand the science, but I do know that insulin not only triggers the body to store the blood sugars as fat, but also interferes with the break down of fat. It also triggers the body to create more cholesterol (all of this is bad stuff!)
Eating low GI foods is all about controlling insulin. As proof that this is important, one of the common side effects of diabetes is weight gain and high cholesterol levels: both directly related to unstable insulin levels.
About 10 years ago I bought (and followed) the Sugarbusters book that taught me all about how sugars get into your system and what effect that all has on weight gain etc.
I cut out the high GI foods: no potatoes, white bread, white pasta, corn, sweets or anything with added sugars or starches.
I ate as much as I wanted of sweeet potatoes, brown rice, whole wheat pasta, whole wheat bread etc. (lower GI foods). I never felt deprived, and over 4 months I effortlessly lost 20 lbs. I had more energy than ever before (I used to wake up with zero fatigue in the morning!) and felt great.
I kept that weight off for years (even after I had returned to a "normal" diet).
My weight has crept back up and so recently, I decided to pull out the Sugarbusters book again. It's only been 3 weeks since I've started eating consistently lower GI foods and already I've lost 5 lbs. Not once in 2 weeks have I stopped myself from eating when I felt like it.
Even if you don't believe in a strict low GI diet, you could try to subsitute high GI foods with their lower GI counterparts.
Once you start, it's easy to eat lower GI: replace pasta with whole wheat pasta, have an extra helping of vegetables instead of a potato or corn, buy whole wheat bread instead of white etc. I read labels and will not buy a product with added sugar, glucose, or corn syrup.
It can't hurt and will only do good!
Also, after 3 weeks, I have lost all cravings for cookies, sweets, and desserts! (so I disagree that a cookie should be used as a "treat" every now and then).
On an evolutionary time line, refined sugar has been around for a very very short time. Our bodies have just not had the time yet to adapt to processing such high quantities of sugar.
I don't know or understand everything there is to know about low GI, but for me, it's been the best (easiest!) way to eat.
Sorry for the really long post. I hope this helps!

Foods Help! How to calculate homemade food? Feb 02 2007

thanks claire... i did that but when i click the little up arrow it adds the WHOLE loaf of bread! :-)

i definitely did not eat the whole loaf. just 2 wee little slices.

now that i have the bread tagged in my list, how do i add just a "portion" of that tagged item?

thanks!

I find that really frustrating too.

Perhaps someone (Erik? :-) ) could add a feature that works something like this:

you add in all ingredients (for example, for my homemade bread, 3 cups whole wheat flour, 1 cup white flour, 2 cups milk... etc....)

and then save that as a private food item.

When you eat some, you simply select your item, and indicate the portion size (for example, 10% if you eat 2 slices out of 20).

It then calculates and analyses what 10% is for all of the ingredients you put in for that recipe.

When I am eating well, I am cooking more for myself. I am not a big fan of name brand pre-prepared foods. There are often high salt and high sugar. The irony is, the better I eat, the less I use this site because it's too difficult to input all of my homecooking :-(

Ah well... hopefully there'll be a solution!

lol saroful!
i didn't think i was in denial about yet another thing in my life!
i'm sure some of it is fat loss but most of it is water loss (isn't that what everyone says that the first week or two is water?) and that is not a bad thing...it's good too!
for the first time in my life, i'm actually drinking the suggested amount of water and and i think the loss means that finally i'm hydrating myself enough.

and thanks too Anke!

hi laura... i'm not sure about the laws where you live but in canada, if your employer attempts to "significantly alter" your job (responsibilities, hours etc), it's called a "constructive dismissal" (even if you don't have a contract).
it means that even though they haven't actually dismissed you, it is such a different job that they may as well have.

when this happened to me once, i quit and the labour relations board were VERY quick to support me. within a week, they had garnished severance pay for me from my old company's account.

you have rights as an employee. not sure if they apply here, but maybe there's something that can be done for you.
good luck!

Hi secret
A number of years ago I had the same symptoms : an electric, tingling sensation in my glute. I ignored it. Long story short, after a couple of months/years (I can't remember how long) of neglect, I ended up in the hospital with a very bad disk problem.

Walking is excellent for backs, bungee jumping is not. My current physiotherapist says not to curtail activity, that exercise is the only way a disk can get nourished.
Also, it's a great idea to relearn how to bend and carry things so that it's easy on the back. And to relearn how to sit at your computer etc.
There are also exercises you can do that strengthen your back that don't put strain on it.
Also, strong abs are important as a strong, toned "core" acts like a sort of girdle, or belt so that good abs actually end up supporting the back.

Some stretches can make this problem worse so it's important to know which ones to do and how to do them, correctly.

I don't mean to scare you (see? still happy -> :-) ) but it might be a good idea to talk to a doctor or physiotherapist.
I'm not a physiotherapist or anything and it is completely possible that your problem is not the same as mine, but walking is a great exercise anyway that can only do good!

I hope that helps! Good luck!! Hil.

congratulations lynn! for having someone in your life that loves you enough to want to be with you forever, and for being so strong and honest with yourself.

for many people, it's easier to say "yes" even when they don't want to get married, than it is to be honest.
and right now, you're respecting your bf and, more importantly, YOURSELF!
good for you!!

i agree that it would be wise to wait. you need to feel 100% confident that this is the right decision, made at the right time, for the right reasons.
once YOU feel right, then it's the right time.
it's great that you're already open and sharing all of this with your bf.
congratulations again! you sound like a lovely couple!

there is the expression "Eat breakfast like a king and dinner like a pauper"
we should eat most of our calories (and carbs) earlier in the day to have energy for the day, and protein (and complex carbs like veggies) in the evening so i'm not sure about cereal in the evening as that's generally simple carbs.

thanks singpraisetojesus... that makes so much sense to me.

the site here told me that i should be consuming 1100 per day and that didn't seem right. for maintenance, it says i should consume 1900.
i really like the idea too of "practicing" eating for maintenance. i was really worried about that. but with this theory, it means that i am starting NOW to eat healthy for the rest of my life, not when i reach my goal.

thanks very much!
