My sister used to belly dance and absolutely loved it.  I prefer to be torn to shreds by blackberry thorns, she prefers to dance with a sword on her head, it's all good.

Curries- I know that they are a combination of many spices.  I also love bay leaves which I put in almost everything that cooks in liquid (rice, pot roast, soups etc).  I also like rosemary, garlic, lemon zest and black pepper.

Having worked at a nursing home for years, I can report that those who were normal to overweight seemed to bounce back from the type of crap that runs through all such facilities (pneumonia, flu) Those who were underweight didn't seem to have the reserves to pull them through a short (10-14 day) illness and emerge at full capacity.  Some of the underwieght people would survive the initial illness only to function at much lower levels, and die in the year (or less) following infection.  Just what I have observed.  Fat in this case was doing exactly what it is supposed to do, protecting the body during times when food intake is not adequate.

Bananas, Apples and Oranges, among others, don't require refridgeration.  Bring a can of tuna and a packet or two of mayonaise and some whole wheat bread.  I f you have the time for fast food you can stop into a grocery store and and get a better salad or healthy sandwich at the deli.  I am in school as well and I bring a lot of food with me.  You can also make your own protein bars, cheap with protein powder, natural peanut butter, and oatmeal.

Sorry, I forgot to post my weight this week.  I haven't lost anything this week, I'm still at 147.4, BUT I can now fit into a pair of pants that I could not even zip a month ago, so I choose to be satisfied with this small victory.

Simple Suppers:

My two favorite quick fixes are whole wheat or Barilla Plus pasta with tomato sauce.  I frequently add fresh spinach and extra lean ground beef to the sauce to add veg/iron/protein, I have a problem getting enough protein in my diet,  I also make it with fish ro chicken depending upon what meat I have.  I also like to make a simplfied country captain rice with tomatoes, onions, and curry powder.  They both take about twenty minutes.

I have not had a brownie since the pledge, I have tried to eat more consistently through out the day with out going over my calories, so far it seems to be working.  Even though I haven't lost weight.  I just went through all of my intake for this month and I am averaging exactly what CC says CC rec 1300, my average 1301.  I have been averaging 770 calories expenditure, so I don;t know what I'm doing wrong.  I know I need to get more exercise, but I'm in school weird hours so it is difficult.  Hope everyone else is doing well on their endeavor.

Fitness What would influence you to get a Personal trainer? Jul 09 2009

I would love to have a personal trainer, but there are a variety of obstacles at the current time.  The first is cost.  The second is that I have lupus and RA, and any potential trainer would need to understand that I can not work out at the same intensity all the time, some days getting out of bed is painful enough.  The third is location.  I live in the mountains of NC and the closest gym is 45 minutes away.  I would like to try doing weight training at home, but given my health situations, I am afraid that poor form would aggravate joint inflammation.  I have asked several questions in this forum, and have always gotten the advice to see a doctor prior to undertaking any exercise program, but I won't have insurance until the end of next month.

fitness girl - I wish I lived near your facility, it sounds great.

Week 1 149.5

Week 2 147.4

The past week has been crazy with the holiday weekend.  My weight has been all over the place, mostly due to increased sodium, the wieght I posted is the average (although it has been as high as 151).  My main splurge food has been brownies, with chocolae chips and walnuts.  If I only have a small one it's not so bad, 130 calories, but I have a really hard time only having one.

I, Heather, do hereby promise not to eat brownies for 2 week(s) until July 20, 2009.

Wow, this is ging to be really hard.

Weight Loss Question about the "deficit" Jul 03 2009
03:40 (UTC)

Subtract the number of calories you are consuming ~1500 from the amount you are burning ~2500-2800.  You have a calorie deficit of 1000-1300 calories.  For healthy weight loss the deficit should be somewhat less, about 500-1000.  If you are working out more on some days, eat a little bit more to keep the deficit approximately 1000 calories.

dplatzer- no offence taken, I realize that those who live in more urban areas think that everyone has the same options.  I know beacuse I was once one of them/you.  It wasn't until I mover here that i realized that so many of the stereotypes about rural people are based on the fact that they have fewer options than most people, health options, dental options, clothing options etc.  there are aspects of where I live that I absolutely love - it is so beautiful, the biodiversity here is incredible.  However I would like to live in a place where the nearest movie theater isn't an hour away.

If I had health insurance I would obviously see a Dr., In addition I live in Western North Carolina where resources, including Dr's, personal trainers, gyms, and health services in general, are very spread out.  When my insurance starts in August, I will definately see a rheumatologist (I have lupus and RA).  I was just hoping someone with some experience would have a general idea of what would be dangerous.  I really don't want to wait until August to start working out.  I appreciate the advice.

Not everyone has a Trader Joe's, I live in the mountains of North Carolina, and unless I want to drive to be 90 minutes to two hours to Asheville or the outskirts, I drive to the Wal Mart which is only45 minutes away.  I don't generally shop at Wal-Mart for groceries because the closest one doesn't have a grocery store, but I do buy a  a lot of clothes, personal items and school supplies.  I would love to spend the little bit more at Target, but it is an hour and a half away.  When I have the money and the location to make Wal-Mart a ghost of the past I will, but right now, they are the only game in town, for far to many things.

Will get a measuring tape tomorrow, but three great things about me:

1.)Highly Intelligent with extremely varied interests, anthropology, biology, art, music, literature, movies

2.) Blue-eyed, Blonde Haired, Big Boobs: I need to slim down to a more reasonably weight for my height I feel best at around 120, but I'd like to get into shape more than I'd like to reach a particular number on the scale.

3.)People always think I'm 10-15 years younger than I actually am.  I am 38, but usually people think I'm around 25.

Seems like you are having trouble with the fact that most of your social life revolves around activites where alcohol is present.  Try suggesting an activity with friends where alcohol isn't allowed.  Public parks, beaches, museums etc.  You may be DD for awhile, but I sure you can find somthing that you and friends will enjoy where alcohol isn't a main attraction

Well, apparently we like a lot of the same things, but on the things we differ on;

PEAS:  I LOVE green peas, when I was a kid we used to buy them at a farm stand (5-7LBS) and we would eat them straight out of the pod, like candy.  I add peas to lots of things.

SWEET POTATOES: a staple here in the south which I generally don;t care for, but I do like them in a sort of spicy seafood stew I used to make with shrimp and scallops and tomatoes.

TOMATOES: I like them in rice with curry and onions. Plus raw when they're ripe with salt and pepper.

SHRIMP: Almost any way it can be cooked is fine with me.  I usually sautee them in olive oil with garlic, but I sometimes make a shrimp curry served with asparagus and rice.

CARROTS: I like them raw, but I love fresh cooked carrots with herb butter (lots of parsley)

I have never tried kale although it is frequently in the stores down here, Have you ever cooked any other type of "greens"?  I have not tried any because down here they are usually cooked with ham hocks, and I don't know what else to do with them.

I have worked in many fields, from medical to sales and I have hated all of them.  I am currnetly back in school fulltime working towards a degree in Ecology/evolutionary biology.  I'm not exactly sure what I want to do with it but it is a subject I love and I can't wait for a "real" career, one that I want, not that I'm doing so I can pay the bills.

Probably high fat proteins, like bacon should be limited, also certain cuts of beef and pork should be limited due to fat content.  Liver and other organs (sweetbreads) can have high levels of various things that are not healthy.

Weight Loss Changing taste buds- moderation vs. cold-turkey input please! Jun 25 2009

I found that I got headaches when I first switched to healthier eating cold turkey, but like many others I found that simply not having certain things in the house helped enormously.  That doesn't mean that I didn't eat them, it just meant they weren't around most of the time.  If I wanted chips I bought one of the single serve bags at the convenience store, my craving was satisfied, but the portion was contained.  Now I don't even want most of that stuff.  I had Frtios a couple of days ago, a very small portion, and they gave me the most incredible stomach ache.  Don't fret if you slip, but it really is easiest to just keep it out of the house.
