Foods high protein snacks? Dec 10 2009

Original Post by betty1302:

I eat alot of yogurt thats got a decent amount of protein in it, I especially like greek yogurt mixed with almonds, wheatgerm and agave, tastes great :-).

Have you tried Trek bars? They have about 11g protein in each bar, not a bad amount. Also you get Soya Crisps called SoCrispy, they have about 9g in a bag. Those are a few things I eat as snacks for protein.

Also peanut butter on toast is a nice snack.

Betty1302, you took the words right out of my mouth, lol...

I was going to suggest peanut butter also, but by the end of the day, if I've shorted myself at least 100 cals, I like to have a level tbsp (1/2 serving) and just take it like that ~ no worries about bread, added cals, etc...I call this my "protein sucker" ~ and it not only gives me that end-of-the-day boost, it also fills my daily fat requirement, since I'm prone to cutting it out during the day, most of the time. As has already been posted as well, we need daily fats as well, don't we?! Smile

Treat yourself! By all means...Laughing!!

I got today "off" because I lost 40 so far, as of this past weekend ~ don't ask me how I did that on Thanksgiving, of all days, lol ~ but I did! Every 20 I lose I take the day "off"...doing things around the house, but no workout. And does it feel great! Then, I got a package in the mail with my new "wardrobe" ~ going from 2x down to a Large! So my husband treated me to all new tops, lol. I love this diet!!

So, I'm with you...if you want a new pair of shoes, get the complete outfit, better yet, maybe two! If you want to go out to dinner, get the dessert! Do whatever makes you feel happy & proud of yourself...and then, do it again! Wink You deserve it!!

I lost weight yesterday, but only because I spent 1 hour working out before going to my parent's house and 1 hour working out after going to my parent's house, plus I filled up on raw veggies and water before dinner yesterday.  I'm down to my first goal of 130 now, and I've cleared one holiday hurdle safely!

wonderful! Laughing You give us all inspiration, lol...and to think that I took the day off...I just might refer to your post come Christmas! Wink

ok, I did it, too. I got on the scale, even tho' I told myself I wouldn't. Friday is my weigh-in day & I was just a wee bit nervous about it.

But, actually, I did pretty well. I knew I had too much stuffing (my favorite thing after pumpkin pie) but my main meal only went to about 540 calories! So, that said, and an extra sliver of pie last night besides, I was happy to see that the scale didn't go up or down!!

So, I am breathing very easily today! Laughing

Now, I only have to navigate myself around all those leftovers...

I haven't posted to this thread in a while, waiting for another milestone...and here's a goodie:

I am officially OUT of the "X" sizes! This is a real breakthrough for me, since I have been a "2X" since my younger son was born 21 years ago.

I have been shopping alot lately, as most of the "1X" clothing that I bought @ the beginning of this season is already too big on me! Laughing I've been noticing that, even when the scale refuses to move, I am still losing an inch here or a half-inch there...so I'll take whatever I can get!

Now when I shop, I find that the "Large" fits just fine, lol...

For reasons that I will not go into here, I think you are telling the truth.

As for the atheists who are only here to put you down, I hope you will not listen to them ~ if I believe in a God and I die to find that He is not there, what have I lost? I have had a good life. If He is there, I gain everything.

And might I add here, that, as for telling the OP to turn to a friend for support ~ that is EXACTLY what she did. She just told you. Or perhaps you weren't listening to the same story I was...

You'll believe in him just in case there's something after death. That's a really lame reason to believe in something. You're one of the "got my bases covered" Christians. You lack conviction and it shows.

Worry not, you're in good company as there are many of you like this.

I see that you miss my point ~ that is NOT what I was saying ...but worry not, it would have gone over the head of anyone who believes that science is of itself, that it comes from no higher Power. And might I add here that you know nothing about me or my beliefs. I daresay I have seen & done more in my lifetime than you ever will, so I will pay you no more mind, although I will keep you in my prayers ~ God knows you will need the help.

And might I add that some people in here have proven themselves to be crude, ignorant, "gotta-have-the-last-word" types & I feel sorry for them. They may rant after I am done, but by the time they read this, I will have already un-subbed from this thread. I wouldn't waste one more moment worrying about those who have proven how low a non-moderated thread can get.

I have only been able to lose weight (60 lbs so far) and in 1985 to finally quit smoking when I have fully given it to God and asked his daily help.  That is when he will assist me, after I have tried on my own and failed to maintain.

ok...I have only read this far, but (forgive me if I mess up here, I will read the rest!)...I got to this one & had to respond.

First of all, yes, He does care ~ very much! When I got asthma (27 years ago) I told Him that I would try to qut smoking if He would only give me a helping hand. From that very MOMENT I never wanted another cigarette again! And just in the nick of time, too...I had two toddlers & newborn twins. Try to run around the house after all that while holding onto the walls *literally* just to make it down the hallway!!

Second of all, every time I ask His help with my weight loss ~ when I reach a plateau, or w/e ~ I find that the next time I get on the scale, I am DOWN by at least two pounds...and it continues for weeks at a time afterwards!

So, in answer to the original question: Yes He does care. Very much. And if we only let Him in, He will be our biggest supporter!! Innocent Just remember that He told us, "Alone you can do nothing. With Me, you can do it all."

Excellent answers! I agree 100% ~ exercise is most likely all that you need...and there are many ways to get it without feeling like you are "working out."

Do you like to ride a bike, hike, play a sport? Lifting weights would do wonders to help re-shape your physique ~ my 21-year-old son runs & lifts a few times a week & he is in incredible shape.

If not, then try playing a sport that would work those muscles ~ maybe tennis? swimming?

You have only been in CC for about 2 months longer than I have, yet you have lost nearly twice as much weight. Congratulations for that, it's an amazing feat, believe me! But like the others have said, your body is changing at such a fast pace that you need to give it time to catch up.

If I were you, I would keep up with the calorie-counting, of course, but now it's perhaps time to get busy with the exercises, as well...concentrating on muscle-toning and cardio.

You can only get better, eh? And you might be pleasantly surprised! That, in itself, is enough reason to begin. Laughing

Cellotlhicks - They're very reasonable.  My goal is to lose a total of 83 lbs (currently I have lost 35), I started in May and am giving myself until January of 2011 (though I'd LOVE to have it all off by October of next year).  It's around a pound per week goal.  Sometimes I lose a little more, sometimes I lose less.  Nothing excessive though.  So I do hope they shut up soon. :)

Smwhipple - I feel like I'm losing at a steady pace.  I've lost 35 lbs so far since May, and my loss has slowed down from around 2 lbs a week to .5 lbs a week this month.  I'm honestly not sure how fast you're supposed to drop dress sizes, but I started at an 18 and am currently in 14's that are getting too large for me.

wow...you sound so similar to my own story here @ CC...

I started out in June, needed to lose 95 lbs, have lost 33 so far & will be @ my goal about Jan, 2011, also. I was wearing size 22T jeans, now am in 20T; also was wearing size 2X in tops, and just today I got a top that is merely a LARGE!!! no X's in there at all, lol...mostly I still wear 1X, but even those are getting too loose. Laughing (I bought the L just out of curiosity, and it fits!)

Unlike you, however, I have received nothing but positive feedback from my husband, the kids ~ & of course, my sisters, who noticed after not seeing me for a couple of months at a time. I don't think anyone worries about me becoming anorexic or bulimic, but I am also quite a bit older than you are, so there is no danger of my developing an unhealthy body image at this point in my life.

From what you say, it sounds like you are losing at a healthy rate, darned near perfect, actually ~ so I wouldn't put too much stock into what others say. But I would maybe try to relieve Mom's mind, at any rate. She only worries because she loves you as her daughter & doesn't want to see you get into trouble. Perhaps if she just talks to the doctor over the phone? or maybe she can wait for him in his office? At least then she could sleep nights...Frown

Fitness Knee Pain Oct 26 2009

I don't know about your specific problem, but with a life-long history of knee problems I would definitely (for myself) avoid the elliptical.

I was born with both trick knees, heredity-related, & had surgeries when I was a kid ~ over 40 years ago. They are now pretty much stable, but now I also have arthritis. When I belonged to a gym a couple of years back I was told to avoid the elliptical at all costs, so I stick to the treadmill. The calories burn a bit slower there, but my legs are much happier for it. In the end, I still lose, so it's a win-win. Wink

As for the stairs, I live in a 3-story house, so there's no avoiding them here, lol...but I would be careful.

A good rule of thumb is just what others have posted here: if it hurts, don't do it. If the pain gets worse, then definitely, you will have to work around that ~ but ice & the bike sound like good suggestions to me.

I also use the phord calculator. I like it because it doesn't recommend dropping in caloric intake too much too soon ~ just enough to keep me from going into a complete plateau.

The CC website told me to go from 1600 to 1400 in a matter of days, whereupon I completely STOPPED losing. As soon as I went back to the phord, I was recommended 1577, easy enough...and started to lose almost immediately again!

So, this is a recommendation that I heartily second! Laughing

Noodles and Company.

Not only do most of the sauces taste canned, but the simple principle of paying more than 50 cents for noodles is a little weird; Noodles are like the cheapest food around; I can't imagine ordering pasta in a restaurant knowing that. The mark up on noodles is just incredible.

Also, I once got a tomato basil soup at Noodles and Company, and I swear to Golly they gave me a bowl of the same tomato sauce they put on the spaghetti.

At least they serve alcohol.

lol...

Every time I have ordered pasta @ a restaurant, it has been over-cooked...mushy, swollen, etc. Gross! Yell

When we lived in the city *years ago* there was a Mom'n'Pop Italian restaraunt there that served the best gnocchi that I have ever tasted in my life...and the sauce was truly cooked from scratch. Absolutely delicious.

Most places *meaning chains* nowadays don't even know how to make a decent sauce, let alone when to take the noodles out of the pot. I have only been to the Olive Garden once, and never again.

McDonald's, Taco Bell, Denny's.

There are probably a couple of others, but these are the worst, in my opinion. Calorie-laden crap @ the first two; poor quality in general @ all three.

When we do eat out it is mostly for breakfast, so I eat alot of egg beaters, whole wheat dry toast (with a bit of jelly) & a slice of REAL meat, ie, ham...or for lunch maybe a salad (side dressing) w/ fresh fruit, cottage cheese or yogurt, homemade soup.

But to waste our money on so-called "food" that I wouldn't give to the neighbor's dog seems like such a waste to me, when there are starving children everywhere who could benefit from a donation, if you get my drift.

Great thread...so many bad places from which to choose, so little time...Tongue out

In all honesty it depends...2 women that are both 5'3" and 120 pounds can look very different depending on how their bodies are shaped. Some women gain weight in their chests and/or hips, for others it will be mostly midsection...

Also people have differing ideas on what a "good weight" is...some think 120 pounds is perfect, some think it's too skinny, some think it's too big (the sick ones think this). So, it's really up to you...what weight do YOU feel most happy with?

I agree.

I have two daughters about this height, one is slightly shorter...the taller one has bigger  bones for her size & @ 120-125 would probably be fine. The shorter daughter has small bones, larger in her bust size but definitely smaller in the hips & legs. If she were to reach this weight she would look quite overweight.

It all depends...Undecided...

I had not heard that, about the natural rythm...but I thought it made sense since one sees people outside walking with weights all the time; wouldn't this be the same thing?

I'll do as you say, if it's the right way, then that's that...I must confess that 1) this plateau is really throwing me off my stride, and 2) most people here @ CC seem to know so much more than I do.

Weight Loss Am I @ My "Set Point"?? Sep 28 2009

lol...first of all, it is not TMI Smile since we all know that everyone is human, eh? And I still haven't broken myself of the habit of weighing in every morning, but I do take it with a bigger grain of salt lately...

I was reading in Jillian Michaels' newsletter that the scale does NOT tell me everything; I mean, it's not every day one gets to lose enough and firm up enough to actually NEED to buy a completely new wardrobe, y'know?? So, for that (and for the positive feedback I am getting from my husband & children) I am so very grateful!(And yes, I actually did have to do this, lol ~ it was getting so I was literally drowning in all of my clothes! Laughing)

But starting today, I am lifting weights: first of all, a few lifts w/ the 3lb bar, followed by holding the two 2lb hand weights while walking for 35 mins. on the treadmill...I decided that 42 mins. is just too much for me right now ~ it nearly kills by the time I am done ~ so I have scaled that one back. Do you think that is ok?

Everyone in my family was telling me yesterday (over dinner) that I should start with the weights, so along with what you have said, I think that's a perfect place to begin to break through this plateau.

So, I'll give it a few weeks & see where this new plan takes me...Wink...

Weight Loss Am I @ My "Set Point"?? Sep 22 2009

hello, spoiled_candy & vcarrie ~

Thank-you both very much for the replies...I am truly stumped here, as every time I get on the scale (3-4 times a week) I get a different reading, and not always in the direction I want to go. For the most part, I have been able to lose about 1.5 lbs per week, but I also get these weeks in between where nothing seems to work.

I went through my total calories per day since I joined CC & I averaged about 1406 per day overall. Then, I went to the Account Settings & it says I should keep it @ 1401. So I guess I was pretty close, but some days were way over that, some were under...it's a wonder to me that I've lost 25.5 lbs! Surprised I just don't want to lose the momentum, y'know?

Now that I've remembered the coffee cream calories, I can't help but log them; I know they should count but it makes me wonder how much I was taking in before I started!

I do log my activities every day; some days are more active than others, but I have sedentary days, too. I am an Artist so I spend a great deal of time @ my drawing table.

My husband tells me I should get a recumbent bike, so I will probably be doing that soon; and the subject of lifting weights has also come up (our daughter does this & she swears by it). Will increasing the incline of the treadmill make my metabolism burn more? I would love that...I have always kept it level.

Thank-you also for the links ~ I will be sure to check them out & let you know how I do. I'm sure there's something in there that I haven't heard before, so I can use the info to my advantage. Laughing

Motivation How is this possible? Sep 16 2009
21:29 (UTC)

Everyone here has given good advice.

I thought I was logging everything in my own daily pages, but discovered (just the other day, actually) that I had completely forgotten about the non-dairy creamer in my coffee!!! There goes an additional 90-120 cals. per day that I had absolutely given no thought to!!

So, I changed to a smaller measurement (trying to cut back anyway) , a lower cal-containing brand, and then started to log it all every day since...making it much more accurate for myself.

Even when we try as hard as we can to get it all in, there is bound to be something we might miss, or if we think we are healthy @ 500 per day, we are only fooling ourselves.

Just remember you need AT LEAST 1200 just to maintain @ a healthy functioning level ~ and if you are trying to lose, you need at least 200-400 more than that!

I feel your pain! I have seen the same results *or lack thereof* in my own dieting efforts over time, and I am one of those posters on the forums who can tell you straight up that eating more WILL help you break out of this rut!!

Please believe what the others have told you ~ they are right.

When I eat 1200 per day, whether sedentary or active, it makes little difference to me...but add 200-250? And the pounds melt off...my body tells me that it senses a hunger strike in the making if I get any less. I have never found an easier diet in all my 59 years, trust me on that!

Try it, you might find yourself moving in the direction you want to go, and keeping a full stomach at the same time! Wink

I think that you are being way to hard on fruit loops. They do have 12 grams of sugar per serving, but they are also low in calories, extremly low in fat, have some fiber and of course are fortified with lron, folic acid and vitamin b12 (all common vitamins for children to be deficiant of) although I would prefer my children to eat oatmeal and fruit for breakfast, fruit loops with skim milk is a MUCH better option than doughnuts, or fast food breakfast which have no nutritional value at all and are LOADED with calories and saturated fat or for them to go without breakfast at all.

Thank-you for bringing just a wee bit of light to a discussion that threatens to become an argument...

I think we are all in agreement that Froot Loops are not the best breakfast food, not even the best cereal; they do, however provide SOME nourishment (like you say) even a small amount as compared to oatmeal or toast.

But there really are worst things in the world.
