As a man, who was morbidly obese for abot 10 years... and having just recently fallen under that 100 lb overweight mark*... Aside from high blood pressure, and back pain, I would have said I experienced no symptoms. Looking back, however, reveals a different story.

It's almost like, when I look back, I was a totally different person. I dont mean looks wise.. more, my personality, my abition, my motivations, everything about me. A lot of this can be attributed to eating right though... but weight loss breeds confidence, and succeeding breeds happiness... so I guess Im just a lot better off mentally.

* Quick note, I am still Morbidly obese according the BMI calculation, tape tests on the other hand paint a somewhat different picture. The tape test numbers just make more sense, so that is what I go by.

Well, I was planning to spend the day cleaning leaves, and doing some work around the house. Mother nature, however, intervened and brought raid down.. so the leaf thing is out..

On top of that.. people in my office shared a great early x-mas present with me, a nasty cold. Everyone in the office was sick last week and this, except me. I guess my cold is considerate and didnt want me to miss actual work ;-)

I would say X-mas is sneaking up on me, but really the stores have had the decorations out since Halloween... so by now, Im just kinda used to them.

Oh, and good morning you band of lovely peeps!

We actually stopped exchanging gifts a few years back. We kinda realised it was becoming pretty standard.. jewelry for her, some useless gadets for me. Instead, we give to the community and buy a few presents for our son, but even that isnt as much as it used to be. We turned X-mas into more of a family holiday for us, where we just spend time together for a week.

Ok, brief history and brag :-) my son is 10 years old. He is in the gifted program and on the principals honor roll. He has been a straight A student and sharp as a tack since he started school. He watches me do magic tricks and figures them right out, partly because he is really smart and partly because I really suck at magic tricks. The point is.. he is not a naive kid.

When he was 8, he flat out asked us if Santa was real. I told him the following:

"He is real in the sense that he represents a magical feeling people have around Christmas. Is he a big man in a red suit? No, he is the personification of generosity and the feeling of giving. He represents the pride and love you feel when someone you care about gets a gift from you, and you can see in their eyes that they truly love it. Santa is real, but he is inside each and every one of us."

He understood it, with just a bit of further explination. Then, christmas eve... We discovered NORADs santa tracker. Here, NORAD, on their official site, tracks via satellite, Santa. He spent the whole night tracking Santa's progress.. even calling the NORAD line and talking with a Luitenant that explained it was all real. Somehow, my son believed the military over me ;-)

So, does he now believe in Santa, I do not know.. but.. he is anxious to track him this year again.

Wow, that is funny, a playboy model is exactly what I am going for. I have been doing research on the subject since I hit puberty. It can be tiring going through every issue over and over, carefully memorizing every curve... I had the tits.. but sadly they are going away. Perhaps augmentation will be a better route.

No... not really.. just in case someone missed the joke. Actually.. and I cant believe I am admitting this, but my body inspiration is Hugh Jackman.

I would definately recommend having a nice long honest talk with him. Not only about how you feel when he does those things, but how he feels about you and your body. There is every possibility he is unaware that it hurts you, but it really doesnt bother him at all. He may even like it.

On the other hand, he may be trying to help you. In his mind, he may be giving you little reminders to stay on track. Of course, some men can be very dumb... especially about weight... moreso if they have never had to deal with it. He might actually believe he is helping.

Then there is the possibility he likes you all over, but those little extra pounds really bugs him. Honestly, I doubt this is it, but if it is, I personally would move on. I mean, lose the weight for yourself, GREAT... lose it because he wont love you as much otherwise... NEVER.

So, I guess Im saying, in my own verbose stylizings, talk to him, find out what is in his head. Dont let doubt and assumptions plague your relationship.

Thanks for the replies all... I suppose I shall no longer be so fearful of the camera. Sadly, the first 9 years of my sons life, I am absent for 99% of the pictures. Anyone with a young child, let me tell you, if you fear the camera... just get in those pics anyhow, you will really regret not doing it later.

Oh, and that is Mt Ranier, as seen from Seattle in the pic above me ;-) If you look close in the snapshot just above my shoulder, you will see my son mingled in with a bunch of storm troopers... Im trying to teach him to be a proper nerd. :-)

I don't.

I simply decided to change my lifestyle.. the pounds just kinda happened.

That being said.. sticking to, and being honest with, the weight log and activity log keeps me on track. I dont beat myself up over overages, but I also try to avoid doing it ;-)

Oh, and I dont deprive myself of my favorites (chinese and pizza) I just try to limit it. It works well for me, I rarely feel like I am actually dieting.

Personally, I like Blue Bunny Ice cream... the low fat version has the least cals (about 90-110 cals per 1/2 cup) .. also the frozen Yogurt is about 90-120 cals. The no sugar version is like 150 cals.. go figure.

Also Eddys makes a "Slow Churned" variety, again avoid the no sugar one its hard and not so good. It runs about 90-130 cals a serving.

I find when Im wanting something for dessert, a scoop of ice cream goes a long way.
Weight Loss Loose Skin Nov 15 2006

Well, I was reading his linked article from that one. It talks about how it is impossible to gain muscle mass while on a lower thand burn diet. He even says.. that for some reason lifting weights will actually cause you to lose muscle mass.

Ok, I am on a lower than burn diet... I eat between 800-1200 cals less than I burn most days... and I lift weights every other day.. and I eat protein daily... and my chest has gained inches while the rest of my body lost em. So.. umm.. that would either be total BS, or for some reason my body works different, which I doubt.

I do think some level of hanging skin is fat based.. but not all of it. I mean our skin is stretched, and that is true, otherwise stretchmarks wouldnt be an issue. Now.. it hangs down because there is still fat in there.. but very little.

As I have lost weight... my stomach fat seems to go downward. At this point, the top of my stomach to just about the middle is hard, and you can actually see the stomach muscles underneath. below that it tapers a bit, and hangs below my belt line. This is obviously fat, and has the tell tale jiggle of fat... but it hangs down so bad because of loose skin. Were my skin taught, it would be on my belly where it belongs.

That being said.. lets say 1/8" of fat is normal.. well, with loose skin, that 1/8" will not sit where it is supposed to.. it will hang down... It just makes sense.. we never get to 0% body fat... so saying it would be thin as paper is just idiotic...

I agree, as someone said above, that the fast food companies are being demonized in this documentary. No, they do not force the food down your throat... but perhaps there are some things you have not considered.

Fast food companies, like McDonalds, use target marketing to spread a new belief structure through television, print and radio ads, as well as through iconography. To our youngest children they show brightly colored characters entertaining children that are having fun, running, playing exhibiting energy and generally happy. The message sent, repeatedly to our children is that McDonalds is in fact fun.

To out teens, they show understanding parents solving their problems with a burger and fries, Friendship and togetherness, even a sense of belonging.. Again, the message is given over and over...

To adults, we get that McDonalds is a good place to take our families.. and a great way to get our food fast. We see it as a good food solution for the whole family.. because we have grown up with the commercials, we have the memories which are skewed by the commercials, so we believe out kids and families will be happy if we went to McDonalds.

I dont know about you.. the McDonalds near my house is a pretty gross unhappy place, filled with people rushing to finish their meal in silence. It is not particularly clean, and not at all fun.. and I have yet to drive by seeing brightly colored characters performing magic for the kiddies.

Truth is... yeah people are being manipulated.. though it is advertising in general that is the culprit. They show us from the time we are little ones that certain foods will fulfil certain needs... Snicker really Satisfies... Trix are for kids... A milky way a day will help you work rest and play... and McDonalds is where your friends are.

Healthy foods have no advertising by with to infultrate young minds... So.. of course it isnt on their minds.

Now also consider.. it was after Supersize Me became a major success and recieved attention that places like McDonalds began offering healthy options.

We all knew McDonalds food was not healthy.. but can you honestly say, no one goes to the place because somewhere subconsciously they believe that the place will fulfil some childhood promise or need? If that is the case.. it seems to me, McDonalds or any fast food restaraunt.. had a duty of offering healthy choices from the beginning.

Well, the first obsticle for me was discovering my addiction. For me it was refined sugars. Candy Bars, Cakes, cookies, etc. I learned a lot about sugar addiction, and went cold turkey for 1 month (March 06)

That one change started a bit of loss, but it was almost as tough as quitting smoking. I craved sugar and would not allow myself to suppliment it in any way. I wanted to break the habit by going cold turkey. The withdrawl was a very real thing. I was irritable, had headaches, and strong cravings... but after just 1 month... it was gone, completely. It was when i was in the store, looking at the impulse items, and all the candy bars.. I realized I didnt want one at all... thats when I knew it worked.

I lost a few lbs that first month, but the following month, I began eating healthy.. which, without the sugar addiction, was really really easy...

I find about a 5 lb difference between morning and night on many days. I am always lighter first thing in the morning than I am at any other point in the day. The biggest reason, IMO, is I drink water all day long.. and first thing in the morn is before I get any water or food in me.

I dont know if this will help you or not... but I went to my doc at a mighty 411 lbs... He talked to me about my weight, and alternatives.. He disuaded me from gastric bypass for the obvious risks...

He also disuaded me from Xencial first because of the already stated side effects, but also because you dont really retrain your diet and fitness habits... which is the only way to have permanent loss.

He was loathe to put my on any form of perscription drug.. at least not till I tried it on my own. Instead.. he put me on a vitamin regimine and loaded me with information on nutrition.

The main thing I got was to simply look at labels and count calories/fat. Make sure to get lots of protein and fiber and get some exercise.. even if its just walking 30 mins a day.

That was march of this year, about 7 months ago, and I have lost 80 lbs since then.

I have still had chinese, pizza and mexican on occaision... and beer and booze on maybe a few too many occaisions. After the first couple weeks, the feeling of being hungry subsides.. its like quitting smoking. Taking refined sugars out of my diet was probably the hardest part.

My adivce would be to give eating and living healthy without suppliments a good try... if anything maybe get a perscription appetite suppresant.. This way you actually retrain yourself to live healthy and lose weight.

Good luck!
