I've lost 85 pounds, and I find that the new weight becomes the new normal, if you know what I mean.

It's not so much a matter of being happier after weight loss -- it's a matter of how UNHAPPY you'd be to be back at your old weight.

The Lounge splitting rent- what's fair? Nov 15 2009

I think that the person having a bedroom to themselves should pay a bit more than a third (33%) of the rent.  Maybe 38% to 40%.

At 40%, if the rent is $1,000.00, one person would pay $400 and the other two would pay $300 each.

When I need to enter an unusual item,  I just go to any restaurant listing on CC and enter something that comes approximately close to what I ate.  In your situation, I would look for a cake listing on CC from one of the restaurant databases.

My post is too late for Halloween night, but "The Descent" is one of the scariest movies I've seen lately.  It's about a group of women who explore caves.

I assume you've tried regular hand lotion and it hasn't helped?

I'd suggest using Vaseline at night on your hands, and then putting cotton gloves on overnight.  You can buy cotton gloves at some drugstores.

Sobey's Compliments Organic 100% Natural Smooth Peanut Butter (that's a mouthful!).  It's a great-tasting natural peanut butter, and not too runny like other brands I've tried.  The price is pretty good too: $3.29 for a 500 gram jar.

I'm another one who weighs daily, and I chart the daily weights in the weight log on this site.

Each to their own, but I like to keep on top of things with my weight.  I wouldn't want to wait a week and then see an increase.

Health & Support What to eat when you have Gallstones? Sep 09 2009
09:42 (UTC)

After I was diagnosed with gallstones, I changed my diet and have had no more gallbladder trouble.  I actually had a  healthy diet before I developed the trouble, but I still made some changes.

I used to eat a normal amount of animal fat (within healthy guidelines).  I cut that amount in half, and made up the difference with nut butters and legumes as a protein source.  I cut out cheese and other high-saturated-fat foods.  Needless to say, you need to cut out junk food and deep-fried food and sweets.

Another change I made was to INCREASE the amount of unsaturated fat that I ate.  This sounds like it is the opposite of normal advice for gallstones.  However, I was eating very little unsaturated fat before I developed the gallbladder problems.  Now I eat 1 or 2 tablespoons of olive oil every day, as well as peanut butter and a little Miracle Whip.

The gallbladder contracts and releases bile to digest fats that you've eaten.  This is the way the gallbladder is supposed to behave.  I believe that you must eat some fat when you have gallstones in order to force the gallbladder to contract.  Otherwise the bile builds up and causes problems.

I eat peanut butter first thing in the morning when I wake up.  The fat causes the gallbladder to contract, and I feel better after this happens.

I hope my layman's advice is useful for someone here who suffers from gallstones.  For those posters who can't eat any fat at all without feeling sick, I think you need to see your doctor, as a total nonfat diet is not sustainable.

Foods Revealing new book from former head of FDA Sep 02 2009

That's an interesting quote from that book.

All my life I've said that Quarter Pounders from McDonald's have some kind of drug in them.  LOL.  There's something very addictive about the taste and smell of them.  It's hard to describe.  It's not the most tasty burger I've ever eaten, but yet eating one would put me into a sort of food-trance.

Another junk food that had that effect on me is Krispy Kreme doughnuts.

It's been years since I've eaten those kinds of foods, but I think that that book sounds like an interesting read.

Anyone can build strength and endurance, even if they're starting from nothing.  If you can afford it, get a trainer who specializes in beginners, or else make sure the trainer understands your situation.  A good trainer will see it as a challenge to build your strength.

But your biggest problem is your low-calorie intake.  If you don't start eating more, you can't really address the strength situation.

Weight Loss How much do u think u ate before u started counting Jul 03 2009
05:31 (UTC)

During my "eating" phases, I would consume probably 4,000 to 6,000 per day.  But I would often go through dieting phases as well, which was comprised of a very healthy diet.  It averaged out to 5 "eating months" and 7 "dieting months" every year.

My top weight was 245.  But if I hadn't had all those dieting phases, and had consumed 4,000-6,000 every day of the year, I can't imagine how big I would have gotten.  Probably over 400 pounds; perhaps more.

Young Calorie Counters Body shape Jul 02 2009

I was a pear shape when I was overweight as a teenager, but when I lost weight (also as a teenager), I was slim and was no longer an obvious pear shape.

When I got older and was again overweight, I was an apple shape.  It is common for older women to change from carrying extra weight in the hips and thighs, and to begin carrying that extra weight in their belly instead.

So your body shape can change as you grow older.  AND by losing weight at any age you can minimize a pear or an apple shape.

Health & Support fatty liver Jun 29 2009

I've been diagnosed with a moderately fatty liver.  I assume it was caused by a previous high-fat, high-sugar diet.  I had already lost a lot of weight when it was diagnosed though, so it might have been a lot worse before.

I'm just continuing with my weight-loss diet as before, except that I've reduced the saturated fat even more, and am eating more unsaturated fats instead.  The doctor didn't suggest anything unusual to do.

There's quite a bit of info on-line about liver disease.  Look for reputable sites like the Mayo Clinic website or the Liver Foundation (or whatever they're called).  From what I remember, they recommend a healthy diet and exercise to help a fatty liver.

I hope others will post on this thread.  It would be interesting to hear other people's experience with fatty liver.

terry2fish:  I forgot to mention in my post above how thrilled I was to read your post saying that a lot of your loose skin had tightened up!  That's very encouraging to hear.  You are right that many articles on-line say that the loose skin is permanent.

My belly is very big, and I would never consider plastic surgery, so it is encouraging to hear that the situation may improve, even though I'm in my fifties.

terry2fish:  Thanks for this interesting post about clothes.  I'm not quite at my goal yet, but have lost 75 pounds so far.  I have a huge amount of clothes in my possession, but very little to wear.  I kept all my old clothes from the last time that I was normal weight, which was the mid-'90s.  I can wear a few of those things now, but most of them make me look like I stepped straight out of a Seinfeld episode!

Right now I only buy jeans (the tapered ones from the '90s are just too ridiculous-looking to wear) and a few tops, because I am still about 20 pounds away from my goal weight.  But on those occasions when I do go shopping, I am really overwhelmed by the choice, and I don't have any idea of what my style should be.  Shopping in the large-size section was relatively simple: find something decent looking that flowed easily over my body!

I'm also concerned about looking age-appropriate, without looking matronly.  Quite a challenge overall.

Hi everybody.  I'm down half a pound since last Friday, to 168.5.  That's not too bad since I've been eating in restaurants a lot.  I've been trying to walk many miles a day to increase my burn rate to make up for it.  After the restaurant meals I've felt uncomfortably full, even though I chose the healthiest thing from the menu that I could.  I'm just not used to eating that much food at once anymore, as my current eating plan is more like grazing, many small meals throughout the day.

Canucker, I range between 1400 and 1800 a day, with the average being close to 1600.  Some days I'm just too hungry, and I have to eat up to 1800 calories.  I'm losing though, but it's going slowly.  My burn rate is 1750 when I don't do any exercise.

I'm pleased with my progress so far.  Starting weight (on CC) 171.5.  Last Friday 170.5.  Today 169.  But yesterday it was 170 so the weight jumps around of course.

Next week I'll have family visiting and it will be a miracle if I don't gain during that time.  We'll be eating in restaurants quite a bit, and even though I'll eat lightly I know that the gain is almost inevitable.  But I'll be doing a lot of walking also, so maybe I can manage to maintain at least.

Good luck to everybody weighing in today.

My second post; first Friday weigh-in.  Starting weight (before CC) 245.  Starting weight (with CC) 171.5.  Current weight 170.5, so I'm down a pound.

Thanks for the welcome okiewoman.  I'm finding the food log and the analysis feature to be really useful on this site.  Does anyone else see extremely high sugar readings?  I don't know how it can be avoided when you're eating fruits and vegs and skim milk, which are all high in natural sugar.  The analysis says that I'm eating three times the amount of sugar that I should be!  Oh well, as long as I lose a bit of weight I guess it doesn't matter.

Best of luck to anyone else who may be weighing-in today.

Hi everyone!  I'm new to CC and would like to join in here.

I'm 5'10", 52 years old, current weight 171.5.  My top weight was 245, so I've lost about 75 pounds, but it's taken over two years to do it.  I've had many plateaus, mainly due to not exercising enough.

Yesterday was my first day logging on this site, and I was amazed to see how high my protein intake is.  And I thought I was barely getting enough protein, due to eating very little meat.  I think that this site is going to be very useful and informative for me.  My sugar intake was sky-high too, but that's hard to avoid when you're eating lots of fruits and veg and high-fibre cereal.

My goal weight is 150.  My only exercise at the moment is long walks, but I try to walk at a very fast pace.  I used to go to a gym, but I don't want to pay the membership fees right now.

Like a lot of the women here, I have knee issues.  It definitely seems to be a common problem for tall women.

My weight has been stalled in the low 170s for months now, and I hope to start losing again, even if it's only half a pound a week.  I'm anxious to reduce the size of my belly, which is still huge despite my weight loss so far.

Greetings to all the tall ladies here.  Hope to see you on Friday's weigh-in.
