Fitness Excercises to do when you can't use a leg Oct 16 2009

You should try pilates.  A lot of it is mat work on the floor.  I bet you could modify most exercises to work for you.

As far as cardio goes though...most cardio is full body.  I just can't think of anything that would work...you know what?  If you have a playground nearby you could try the swings.  So long as you can move your knee it's perfect.  If you were to swing for about 30 minutes you would still get a decent core cardio workout.  I know it's a kooky idea but hey.  Maybe it's worth a try?

Best of luck with the surgery!

thanks for the replies!! I  guess I should be eating more but when I eat my self esteem drops significantly leaving me restless for the rest of the day.

This comment really worries me.  This is how eating disorders start.  Eating doesn't make you fat, skipping breakfast, having a fastfood lunch, and eating a bag of oreos for dinner makes you fat.  (I'm not accusing you of doing this, it's just to illustrate unhealthy diet habits)  It's not that you eat but what you eat that makes the difference.  Please start by eating a good, balanced breakfast.  It improves brain function.  It fuels your body for a good bit of the day.  It doesn't have to be elaborate, a couple of pieces of whole wheat toast with maybe a little peanut butter (or a hard-boiled egg and the toast), and a piece of fruit.  Your body needs carbs, protein, fat, yes, I said fat, and vitamins.  If you eat something light and healthy for breakfast you'll feel great, energized, and hopefully good about yourself.

About the running.  An active lifestyle is a really good habit to start at your age.  Rival1's cardio plan will get you on the right track.

Best,

Karen

Chewing gum is an appetite stimulant, it will make you feel more hungry, not less.  Try drinking a big glass of water or a cup of green tea along with the other excellent advise given by others.

best,

Karen

Walking and running outside the home is a problem for me. My 4yo balks at a stroller and is too slow otherwise. Not impossible, I do take walks here and there.

I don't know if this is possible where you live but I've seen people in the park and in my neighborhood running while their kids bicycle beside them.  They both get beneficial exercise, plus you get a built in cheerleader.  I learned to ride a bike with training wheels when I was 4, it's about the right age.  It sounds like you have a great routine that you love but this might be a fun change of pace for you both.

Keep up the great work!

Illingal - I walk to and from the bus stop, giving me a guaranteed 15-30 min/5 days a week (depending if I get a ride home or not) so, yeah, I hear ya.  It's nice having that built in time.
