My Mom's old favorite is Taco Seasoning. Personally, I just buy the microwave popcorn in 100 calorie packs. Yes I know it's not as cheap, but it's not so expensive either. |

Jeningermany kind of gave me an idea... when you are done you could just get up and throw your plate (etc) away. I also second the idea of eating slowly so it doesn't look like you're just sitting there while everyone else is "enjoying themselves" (probably what the well intended Mom is assuming) |

I agree. Talk to someone that can help like a Doctor or even your church councelors. Although this is no replacement for professional advice, I would like to give you a tip that has helped me when I start to think, analize, obsess, about past situations where I have "failed" socially. When I start to get that feeling of guilt and failure I have to stop myself and say "I forgive myself for being annoying in that situation." or "I forgive myself for saying ____" . You fill in the blank. It's just as important to forgive ourselves as it is to forgive others. Like me, you may need to forgive yourself of a certian thing more than once. Each time you tell yourself you are forgiving yourself, you will feel that pressure lift just a little more. (but don't do this and then not seek professional help just because you see results, you still need to talk to someone about everything) Recognising you have to change some things is the first step, just don't let it stop there. Let us know how it's going, too. :) |

BTW if it's not a good time for a kid you should be using SOME form of birth control... otherwise it may happen for reals next time. I got pregnant only a week after I quit taking the pill, so don't count on that timing to keep you from getting pregnant. |

If you are more comfortible with it, I've found if I take an understanding tone it smoothes things out as I tell someone to knock it off. As example: "Mom/Dad, I am so lucky to have parents that love me and care about my health. I know you only say those hurtful (yes, point out that it's hurtful) things because you want me to see how unhealthy being overweight is. I know I will feel much better when I reach my goal in a few months. BTW Did I tell you about this plan I'm following? (this shows them you aren't just sitting around doing nothing) Yeah, I'm watching my calories and getting some activity everyday. My Dr. said since my Thyroid is fine this will work well for me and I've already lost X amount of pounds! The biggest thing my Dr wants is for me to not get discouraged (play it off as medical advice) and stay positive because stress just makes women's bodies hang onto extra weight." Sound upbeat and non-critical throughout . I do like the advice someone gave as using your kids, too. I mean really, wouldn't they be embarrassed if they took the kids to a resturaunt and the kids told the waitress she was fat? It's just not good manners and if they do it in the home they'll do it in public. |

| Weight Loss | starting again.. any suggestions? | Jun 27 2009 19:53 (UTC) |

For me, exercise EVERYDAY is the key. I can cut calories all I want but I don't see real progress until I am active, too. Likewise I've found that if I only exercise and don't watch my calories I have very little progress. I started with walking around my country block (about 3 miles) then added some jogging. On days I don't jog or walk I go on the stationary bike for 30 min. Lately I've also been swimming everyday (I have the good fortune to have a large pond in my backyard and three boys that want to swim all the time LOL), and I picked up a Windsor Pilates vid at a local thrift store, so I do that every other day. One day I will jog or go on the bike then swim, the next day I'll do the 20 min pilates video and swim. |

Before a Nephew's b-day at a fast food resturaunt, I just looked up the nutritional info online and made my choices before I went (I decided on the single hamburger with a side salad with Raspberry Vinagerette instead of fries). Then I ate accordingly earlier in the day so I wouldn't be going over my cal intake. I still had room to have a brownie too. However I do agree with others who have posted here, if you go over a bit don't sweat it. Just get back to eating well the next day. |

Drink more. I know it sounds counter productive, but when I am retaining water I drink a little extra to flush it out, and it usually only lasts a day. Also cut way back on your salt intake at that time, that's what is holding all that water in your body. |

Why don't we address the real issue here. You are depressed. You have health issues along with weight issues, but when you say things like you can't enjoy life you are depressed. I recommend you go to a therapist who deals with ED. Perhaps you can call your OBGYN's office for a recomendation (they usually know the local counselors). Your Dr. can tell you how to keep your period, but if you don't address the reason you can't find enjoyment in your life it won't do any good, you will be on the teeter totter of over eating then undereating. Unless you get down to the reason behind all this you won't have the tools you need to beat it. Find a therapist. I say this in all love and concern, and as someone who has been through depression, too. BTW One of the best ways to brighten your day is to find someone you can help. It could be an elderly neighbor who just needs someone to talk to, or sweep their floor for them. It could be reading to kids at your local community center. Find something else to focus on besides yourself and you will find you are having better days. |

Honestly I don't blame you for calling her a bitch. That's exactly what she's being... a bitter, vindictive, bitch. I sounds like she DOESN'T want you to loose weight. It sounds like she feels like she's in competition with you, like if you loose weight this way instead of having lipo she's somehow a looser who gave up on her own battle with weightloss. She probably is really self concious about that. Still, what kind of mother would embarass her daughter publicly, demean any results she's getting, and outright call her a liar? Her job is to encourage you, not tear you down. I would probably just keep my distance from her as much as possible, and talk to her as little as possible, because you don't need all that negativity in your life. When she starts in on you just walk away and ignore her. When you get thin (and I know you will) you won't have to publicly humiliate her. Just loosing the weight when all she would tell everyone else was that you couldn't will be humiliation enough for her. In the mean time, find someone else you can talk to like a grandparent or just some friends who will keep you motivated and praise your efforts. Feel free to add me as a buddy and message me. Keep up the good work and keep going. Her low sense of self-worth doesn't have to be your problem. You will do this. I know you can. |

Motivation for working out, crazily enough, is working out. I've found the more I run the more I enjoy it and get a charge out of it. However, I have also found if it's not fun I'm not going to do it. Some people love those workouts that really kick your butt. Me, not so much. I just started by walking 3 miles 4-6 times a week. Then I started running too, 3-4 times a week. I wish I could run more than my schedule and body allow. :) So find out what makes you feel happy when you do it and then, well, do it. Have fun, and good luck! |

I drink 1 tbls mixed in a glass of water each day. I don't know if it has had any effect on weight, but it keeps my skin clear. Maybe since it helps your digestion it keeps bloat to a minimum and therefore helps keep your weight down, but I don't think it is a miracle in liquid form. :) |

Ah, I'm in the Poor-Boat as well. Although my mom was of the school that if she was going to spend what little money we had on food it was going to be "good" for us. Although we did have Mac n' Cheese with Hot Dogs, we also had to have veggies too (usually frozen from our garden). Pop was only in the fridge if someone was coming over for dinner. I honestly grew up drinking Milk or water the majority of the time. Mostly I just have to get over the feeling that if it's a treat like a cady bar I need to eat as much as I can because there won't be more later. Things I love that my mom inadvertantly taught me: -Salad is a treat, and only the rich people get to eat it all the time -Iced Tea is the BEST! (unsweetened even) -You don't HAVE TO have pop everyday -Fresh Fruit is also a treat (other than apples because they grow locally and are therefore the cheapest fruit for us) -Exercise is fun, and also funny if you are 6 and come down from your room in a burgundy leotard over your Sunday tights... with leg warmers (Mom almost died laughing at me on that one [well it was what they were wearing on the TV exercise show])
What I need to unlearn: -Dieting is all about restrictions and being unhappy while everyone around you eats whatever they like -Breakfast is ok to skip -Eat a teeny tiny supper so you can gorge on dessert -Grown-ups can eat whatever they want whenever they want

If you want to know if this is enough activity to help you loose weight and 'be fit', I'd say so. I do abou the same amount of activity sometimes less, and so far I am down 6.5 lbs. Just remember you won't get immediate results, but slower progression is what will keep the weight off and keep the muscle tone. Good Luck! |

I find that most days after lunch, I am at 500-600 calories. Yet I always manage to make up the rest. LOL In the U.S. Dinner does usually consist of higher calorie foods, so throw in a mid-afternoon snack and a dessert, and you'll be right about 1400-1500 for the day. |
