Weight Gain a little embarassing but... Nov 16 2009

OH MY....I am sorry, i must have mis understood....Are you "trying" to gain weight?  I can not understand that concept....I have always had the problem of having to lose weight.  Again I am so sorry.

I'm just stating the obvious here; the Weight Gain forum is for people who are intentionally trying to gain weight, because they are underweight or at an unhealthily low weight for them. This forum is for people who have suffered from eating disorders, or other illnesses where they have lost weight, or perhaps they have a fast metabolism/naturally skinny and they want to gain weight to look healthier [there are other reasons, I just don't want to write a whole essay]
It's not a forum for people who have "accidentally" gained weight. I'm sort of confused about what it is that you don't understand... Is it that someone would actually want to gain weight? Anyway, I hope I cleared that up.

Okay, this is to the OP- when I first began gaining I had the worst stomach problems; bloating, gas, constipation, diarrhea, oh gosh it was terrible.  I was constantly in pain and discomfort, not to mention how embarrassing it was.
I found that it didn't matter what I ate, but how much I ate.
So maybe make some of your main meals smaller, but add in extra couple of snacks during the day [I don't know how much it will help with the gas, but it doesn't hurt as much]

Oh and don't hold it in! That makes me sound so disgusting, but it makes it a lot worse!

I am a complete tea addict!
I just about always have it with a little bit of honey, no sugar and absolutely no artificial crap [I find it detracts from the taste of the tea].
Green tea is lovely with lemon and honey
Herbal tea usually doesn't need any sweetener
and regular black tea is nice with honey too.
Don't add milk to green tea or herbal teas [ie. peppermint + milk = bleh!]

and loose-leaf teas are generally a lot nicer. You'll have to get a tea infuser, but for a little extra effort, you get a much better result.
:D

Yup. Pretty good, but I don't remember what else I put in the bowl...

Pure maple syrup, cinnamon & pecans would pair well with sweet potato puree.

ooh yum, I think I'll try this tomorrow
sounds delicious!

oh and this morning I had carrot and ginger oatmeal, with walnuts and maple syrup. I'm pretty pleased with the result :)

I've got sooo many combos, but it will take a while to post them all. So I'll tell you what I've had over the last few days:
+ grated apple, walnuts, cinnamon, raisins and honey - yum!
+ fresh blueberries, dried cranberries and roasted pumpkin seeds [this was simple, but it tasted pretty nice]
+ even just crunchy pb with oatmeal is yum

sometimes I add yogurt in; it makes in extra creamy and delicious!

has anyone tried it with sweet potato before?

If I knew I was going to die, I don't think I'd be able to eat at all.

 Exactly.

and I'd sitting in a corner rocking back and forward, crying.
If I was feeling a little less freaked out, I would write a letter to my family and friends.

Maybe a cup of tea would be nice. Green tea with a teaspoon of honey.

You've gotten some good breakfast options, but I'd say keep the muesli :)
I don't know about you, but when I eat it it keeps me full for quite a while.

Foods I Hate Vegetables Nov 11 2009

oh wow, I saw the title of this topic and I literally gasped xD
I, unlike a lot of the people who've just posted, LOVE vegetables!

Its already been suggested, but making fruit smoothies with spinach is a great idea. I make them with yoghurt and berries, and you can't tell there is spinach in it [apart from the fact that its a greeny sort of colour]

Vegetable ravioli? It's pretty nice, with a tomato sauce or pesto. I don't know how many veggies you can get from a serving of it, but its better than nothing.

Or how about a soup with veggies in it? like minestrone. It doesn't really taste like vegetables, and I've made it for my family using beef stock and some bacon and apparently that makes it taste more like meat [I don't actually know how true that is, I'm a vegetarian]

I know its not that healthy, but pizza with veggies? [I'm trying to come up with things where you can't taste them hehe]

Hope that helped :)

Foods One high calorie food... Nov 11 2009

I'm going to have two:
main meal: cheese [but I'd have to have different varieties of cheeses; camembert, ricotta, jarlsberg, feta, bocconcini, vintage cheddar... gosh I'm starting to drool...]

dessert: nut butter - straight out of the jar
especially from The Royal Nut Company. They have this one called "Royal Spread" with like five different nuts in it... YUM!

Apart from those two, and dark chocolate, the rest of my favourite foods aren't too high-cal

personaltrainer: yeah, my friends think its a bit strange that I find eating like that so weird. Most of them ate chocolate and cookies while studying on the weekend.
I think the main reason why I dislike it is because it felt like I pretty much ate all day and it was very unstructured.
I ate at least every two hours, and didn't really have any "proper meals". And in my family, we eat dinner at the table, no tv, no doing other things while eating: we just sit and eat and talk to each other. We're into slow food hehe
I'm usually one of those people who has set times for everything:
ie. breakfast at 6:45am, small snack [usually some fruit] at 10, lunch at 1 [wrap, salad, sandwich, soup etc.], afternoon snack at 4 and dinner at 6:30-7:30.

But I hope I unintentionally have more of these days, because I can understand how, like smash_uk said, this sort of eating is perhaps more normal than eating perfectly balanced structured meals day in day out.

That's a VERY difficult decision, breakfast is by far my favourite meal of the day.
For me, it comes down to:
+ porridge [or oatmeal] - but am I allowed to have some variation with the mix-ins?
+ greek yogurt with muesli and berries - yum!

Last week and this week I have had exams everyday, and on the weekend that just went past I only left the house twice - once for a 30 minute jog, and the other for a one hour walk to get some stuff for breakfast. And I basically did nothing but study, all weekend.

So I didn't really have structured meals, I pretty much snacked all day.
I really dislike doing this, but it kind of just happened.
My snacks on saturday went something like this:
a cup of green tea at around 7am
snack1: small tub of Jalna natural yoghurt, I added some blueberries
s.2: apple with peanut butter
s.3. carrot sticks and hummus
another cup of tea
s.5. bowl of porridge/oatmeal with a teaspoon of honey, a small handful of walnuts
s.6. pistachio larabar
s.7. this was like my "dinner snack", and I had a tomato, spinach and red onion salad, with some boccocini

Wow, that I didn't realise how much food that was. Although on Sunday, I ate a bit less. Not really on purpose, only because I had one thing on my mind: exams
I was too stressed to think about food.

swimfan, I've been wondering about over the last few weeks, but I'm too worried that if I gain more it will cause me to restrict. I don't really trust myself enough to not freak out.

I'm 5'1 [and a half] and around 105-7 lbs
I eat around 1600 calories a day at the moment, but add more if I exercise.

After gaining over 30lbs on 3000 cals, my gain never plateaued...
so I tried to eat 1800-2000 a day for maintenance, but I just kept gaining and I freaked out a bit.
I didn't think teenagers could gain any weight on that little...

oh and I'm turning 16 in two months :)

Young Calorie Counters what to get your (sort of) new boyfriend for christmas? Nov 06 2009
05:37 (UTC)

I like the toy idea, and I don't know where you live but last year I bought a guy friend a Super Soaker [because in Australia we have water fights on Christmas] :D and he loved it.

I've made friends 'mix tapes' [well, burnt CDs] of the kind of music they like and thats always nice. But it usually only works when you're into similar sort of music.

I'm assuming he likes food? bake some gingerbread people :)

Young Calorie Counters foods you hate! Nov 02 2009

haha my list could go on forever

I hate seafood, bananas, avocado [that includes guacamole], cakes/cup cakes/muffins, I hate soft drinks, potato chips, scones, and I'm not a big fan of cauliflower either.

I don't like "baked beans", but I like eating beans in other ways [ie. in a salad, soup etc.]. I think its because I don't like that disgusting sauce that its swimming in...

Yeah, I'm really fussy.

And my favourite foods:
carrots, pumpkin, spinach, corn, sweet potato, tomatoes, apples, berries [raspberries, cranberries, blueberries etc.], every single kind of nut there is, I love seeds too [pumpkin, sesame, sunflower etc.], peanut butter, hummus and dark chocolate.

I love cheese [favourites=camembert, ricotta, jarlsberg, feta, bocconcini, cheddar]  and yoghurt [and frozen yoghurt].

Oh and I love Vegemite xD

I eat the same amount as you [I'm 5'1] and weigh a couple of pounds less, and I would say that you're not undereating.
Although if you do lose any weight, it would be wise to increase your calorie intake.
Don't worry about it :)

Weight Gain Unhelpful comments Oct 28 2009
07:11 (UTC)
14

yep, I used to get comments all the time, and one very recent one was "your sister is so much skinner than you but eats so much more" - oh why thank you, that's because she's twelve and I'm turning sixteen in a couple of months. Only until recently I weighed what I used to weigh when I was 12, but it was not pretty.
And now that I'm 'weight restored', and my bmi is around 20, I still get people telling me to eat more because I'm so skinny. Have they not noticed how much weight I've gained this year? And I always get pressured into eating 'junk food': "here, try some of this cake" - "no thanks, I'm pretty full after lunch" - "oh just eat some cake, its really nice.. blah blah.."
Hehe sorry about the rant, I sounded a bit rude didn't I? but I don't blame these people, I just need to forget about such comments.

Oh and on the topic of people with eds liking/loving food; I am definitely one of those people. If my mind is not occupied with something else, I'm thinking about food. Planning, adding, subtracting, and worrying about my next meal. I think since I began recovery, this obsession has only increased.

Vegetarian Eczema and vegetarianism Oct 24 2009
00:17 (UTC)

yep for me its mostly stress related. I was holidaying in Europe for five weeks, came back to melbourne two weeks ago and have exams in a week. My eczema has gone crazy.
Soaps, detergents etc. also make it flare up. But sometimes I'll just get it for no reason, and I'm pretty sure that there is a food that affects me, I just haven't worked out what it is. I'm not vegan, but vegetarian, and when I eat less dairy etc. it doesn't seem to make much difference.
Sorry, I didn't really help, I was just ranting about the mysterious causes of my eczema...

I completely agree with all the people who have said to make your own soup.
I have never tried canned soup, and I don't think I ever want to.
Minnestrone is one of my favourites and I find that it leaves you feeling satisfied for quite a while. Its as simple as adding some; stock, onion, garlic, tomato, carrots, celery, green beans, kidney beans, some pasta if you want etc. into a pot. And the beans make it quite filling. Add some herbs and voila.
It makes a hearty meal on its own, but you can still have it with a bread roll.

Weight Gain How did you decide your target weight? Oct 21 2009
22:56 (UTC)

My doctor & my mum decided that a bmi of 20 was best for now [I'm 15 y.o] but because I'm still growing its hard to really tell. Before my ed- two years ago- I was an inch shorter and had a bmi of around 18.5. So I've never been close to this weight before.

But I've only had one period in about four and a half months, and I'm really hoping that I won't have to gain more to get it back properly. My doctor said that it often takes a while to get it regular again when you haven't had it in so long [about a year].
