Weight Loss The Metabolism Miracle? Nov 18 2009

Original Post by floggingsully:

There is no such thing as a 'miracle' program.  That being said, I have no idea what this program entails, but just about every program will work if you follow it strickly.

Thanks for your reply.  Ms. Kress says that it has long been believed that there is only one "type" of metabolism.  But it has been discovered, she says, that about 47% of American women have a pancreas that overreacts to carbohydrates...and that this can lead to diabetes, among other things.  Her "Miracle" plan supposedly "retrains" this second type of metabolism, "Metabolism B", by specifically limiting intake of carbs to five grams every five hours.  This portion of the program continues for eight weeks; and then you start introducing 11-20 grams of carb every five hours.  (All carbs being complex, of course.)

Although I was on the Atkins Diet in the early 70's (when it first came out) this one seems a lot more difficult...especially since I'm not so good with anything that has to be timed so precisely.

But I've grown increasingly discouraged by the fact that I have to consume sooooo FEW calories in order to even lose a pound.  And that's one of the indicators of Metabolism B...along with fat around the middle, fatigue, anxiety, craving carbohydrates like an addiction, trouble sleeping, short-term memory problems, light sensitivity, problems with focus and concentration, and alcohol intolerance.

Her whole approach is SO different from anything that I've seen before, that I wanted to know if anyone else has had an experience with trying her methods.  And believe me...I HAVE tried 'em ALL....From the Grapefruit Diet in the 60's to Atkins in the 70's, The Beverly Hills Diet in the 80's, and a liberal sprinkling of Jenny Craig, Weight Watchers, and others in between.

Does anyone who is responding to this inquiry about Dutch ovens know the pros & cons of using a crock pot vs a dutch oven?

Personally, I think just about anything you can do in a Dutch oven, you can do in a crock pot.  Anytime I do a beef roast, pork tenderloin, soup, chili, whatever, I use the crock pot.  I use my crock pot much more than my Dutch oven.  I can use a cheaper roast, like a rump roast, that has very little fat, and it turns out so tender, practically falls apart.  And, using the crock pot means I don't have to watch it.  If you Google crock pot recipes, you'll find tons of recipes, including low-calorie recipes.  You'll see there's not much you can't do in a crock pot.  Good luck!

It's been years since I used a crock pot, so maybe they've improved since then...but I don't think meat browns as well (as clairelaine suggested) in a crock pot.

I have the fancy indoor kind but I always use my iron dutch oven. It is so wonderful! Season according to the directions. Then use, use, use. Nothing compares. Clean up is so easy! Fill with warm water. Let sit for 15 or 20 minutes. Wipe out with a cloth - no soap! Don't sit it in water; just fill it and sit it on the stove top or counter. Let it air dry before you put it away.

Periodically, iron needs to be reseasoned if you cook something acidic, like tomato sauce, or if someone dares to use soap on it.

My Lodge five quart dutch oven cost us $35 years ago and it is a mainstay in our kitchen.

The one that I recommended (above) was a Lodge.  This is a different one, but it's only $35.97!

Dutch ovens were the original "crock pot"...for slow cooking.  My mother used one often...and there are LOTS of things that you can make in one!

Check out target.com for one that's $62.99 or walmart.com for ones that are as low as $45.  Those are cast iron coated with enamel, though.  I'd tend more towards the pre-seasoned one at $49.97.

Well, I WAS thinking a few months down the road.  Also, you can list yourself on freecycle.org and maybe someone will be giving one away!  Or you can buy a Pilates machine from QVC when they're having a show, when they put them on the 5-month "Easy Pay" plan.  Or join the "Y"!  And, in the meantime, at NO cost, you can do the lunges and/or other exercises that tsanmigu suggested.  And bands are CHEAP.  You just need one for your arms and a stronger one for your legs. Smile

At the present time, the effect of "resistance" is being provided by your own body weight.  However, as you lose fat and gain muscle mass...and get stronger...you'll naturally feel a "need" for more resistance.  Then you can replace your faulty elliptical with a good one. Smile  Or, as tsanmigu suggested, do some standing exercises that use your body weight as resistance.  Or even get a Pilates machine!  I LOVE mine!  (They're not that expensive from QVC.)

Any shoe with a raised heel promotes bad posture. However, like littlesimongeroge said, strengthening your core will help prevent bad posture anyway (core being EVERYTHING below the armpits and above the knees).

Raised heels, instantly throw your body out of alignment. You are better of with minimalist shoes, that are level throughout the shoe. The more cushioning the shoe has with "stability and arch support", the weaker your feet become too.

Your foot is perfectly designed as a load bearing device. It has an arch, which is designed to hold weight, not have "support" pushed up into it, therefore weakening it. Simple bio-mechanics and physics.

Ummmmm...bmx, what gives you the impression that the heel is RAISED?  It's NOT.  Although the sole is thick, the footbed is level.  Also, any "arch support" is minimal...since I have flat feet and traditional arch supports HURT MY FEET.  I think you need to read up on this product before making assumptions.  For those who don't know, MBTs are the result of seven years of research and design by a Swiss Physicist and several Biomechanical Engineers.  Go to mbt.com for more information...

If you look at my first post in this thread, you will see I mentioned the MBTs. Yes, go to the website to see the stupidity. "We wanted to mimic the feel of barefoot, by designing a big ass shoe." Genius!! I'm surprised they didn't win the Nobel Prize for this product.

It's ok, I'd probably defend a useless product if I had spent that much money on it.  Kind of like my TV.Smile

As I said before, don't knock 'em until you've walked a mile in THOSE shoes.  I've been wearing them for almost three years now, and they are the BEST shoes, of ANY kind, that I've ever put on my feet.

As for TVs...I NEED a new one!  Can you send ME your "useless" TV? Laughing

To put it bluntly, they're a waist of money!!!

It helped you because you had a specific need for them.  Otherwise they will not help someone to "tone up" or "promote weight loss".

There are plenty of "free" exercises and mobility drills you can do to correct posture without the need to purchase these shoes.

LOL...I never said that they help you "tone up" or lose weight.  I said that they promote good posture...which is something that is of utmost importance to EVERYONE.  If you don't have good posture, you'll end up one of those hunched-over little old ladies or men!  Plus, they're comfortable...and easy on the back (also important to just about everybody).  Which is why nurses and dental hygienists and people who are on their feet all day, every day, wear them.  No, they are definitely NOT a waste of money.  (Note the correct spelling of waste there...)

It's all good.

I quoted what the shoe company said, not you!

My posture is fine from strengthening my core and back.

I know plenty of people who are on their feet all day and have good posture and no back problems, without wearing those shoes.  My girlfriends a nurse, she doesn't wear those shoes, and doesn't feel she needs to either.

They worked for you, good I'm glad for you, but posture can be corrected without buying the ugliest $100+ shoes I've ever seen. lol

Waist, oops I meant waste of money! lol

LOL...Good to see that you have a sense of humor about it!  You're RIGHT...they're NOT sexy.  That's why I wear peep-toe pumps when I go out on a date. Wink But for shopping and errands, they totally ROCK!

And as for your g/f who doesn't feel a need for MBTs...she MAY change her mind someday.  I know my dental hygienist is jealous because I got a pair! Smile

They look like they will make you look taller therefore looking smaller.  Was Paris Hilton wearing these, she was on theskinnywebsite.com the other day in what looked like these things.

I'd be scared they might through off my leg balance (or something weird) and I'd injure myself and not be able to run.

Actually, they make it easier to walk and run...once you get used to them.  I was advised to walk around the yard and house a bit before I ventured out; and that's what I did.  And I didn't have a problem AT ALL.  Once you get used to walking heel-first (the proper walking stance), your gait just flows.

As for Paris Hilton...I checked her out on that website and, judging from the side view of her posture, it looks like that's exactly what's she's wearing.  And, although you can't see the entire shoe, the hash-marks along the front of the sole are identical to the ones on my MBTs.

Well, I STRONGLY DISAGREE.  But I would buy the original: MBTs...instead of the knock-off by Skechers.  Yes, they are expensive, but TOTALLY WORTH IT.  I bought mine almost three years ago and wear them EVERYWHERE.  (Except, of course, if the occasion calls for pumps.)

HOWEVER...I don't think they reduce cellulite OR "quickly tone up your legs".  I do Pilates every day for that.  Their primary benefit is in providing a natural alignment of the body...forcing you to walk properly (heel-first), which DOES strengthen your core musculature.  And the proper alignment takes the pressure off the lower back, which is VERY important for those of us who have Degenerative Disc Disease!  I used to come back from Costco absolutely exhausted from walking on the concrete floors.  Now I can go to two or three other stores on the way there, and NOT be exhausted when I get home!  For me, MBTs are a MIRACLE.  And I have two other friends who strongly agree with me!

To those naysayers above, I say, "Don't knock 'em until you've TRIED 'EM!"

has anyone tried these things?  2 girls at work have them, and they say it is like walking on air, they make you stand up straighter, you have to find your correct center of gravity to be able to walk in them, but they think they are great.  My issue is that I just had bone spur removal on my left heal and need to have the right one done as well.  Does anyone know if I can try these?  At $100 plus dollars a pair... I need more info.

I've been wearing MBTs for almost three years now, and I LOVE 'EM!  I don't go ANYWHERE without them.  They're particularly easy on the back if you're walking through stores and such with concrete floors.  (And I have degenerated discs, so a "store run" USED to be VERY painful.)

That being said...No I don't think you should try them while you're healing from bone spur surgery.  Wait until you're fully healed and THEN try them.  I paid $179 for mine on eBay and, after almost three years, they look almost NEW.  They are a VERY well-made shoe!

You are soooooo RIGHT!  I lost 82 lbs. a couple of years ago and then gained back 29 lbs. (because of chocolate and Stacey's Pita Chips). The thing that was bothering me the MOST was that I could no longer fit into my coveted Size 12 jeans!  (I comfort myself with the thought that Marilyn Monroe wore a Size 12.)  When I hit 189 lbs. I FREAKED OUT!  So I re-started my journey...and have lost 19 of those pounds...and can barely fit into the jeans.  But it's SUCH a satisfying feeling!  I won't let THAT happen again!

If you write in your journal here on CC, it will give you personal accountability.  Let's face it...you don't KNOW those people in meetings, etc., anyway.  Ultimately, yourself is the ONLY one you should be accountable to.

And sign up for the newsletter from whfoods.org. (I think that's the correct web address.  You can google World's Healthiest Foods to find it.) They send out a newsletter every day, which includes a recipe.  Check it for calorie count, though, because some of them are not low-cal.  But poke around the website.  It has a wealth of information on how to eat a healthy wholefoods diet.  If you follow that kind of advice, you'll actually be ahead of NutriSystem!

p.s. When I use the word "diet", I mean an eating regime or "food plan".  I mean it as in "ancient man subsisted on a diet of nuts & berries".  Laughing

A delicious way to add fiber is to have a Fiber One bar every day.  (It also helps to satisfy my chocolate craving, since it has dark chocolate chips in it.) And Cascadian Farm has a delicious high-fiber bar called Fiber Right.  Both are listed here on CC.  And I've begun having a slice of Milton's Original Multi-Grain Bread with 1T of almond butter on it every day.  Delicious!!!  I have a bunch of fruit every day and I've managed to get my total fiber up to 23-28 g. per day!  NOT an easy task, I can tell you.  But I've slowly added in the fiber-rich foods over a two-month period of time...about one new addition per week.

I have Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, so my sleep patterns are allllll screwed up!  I tend to stay up all night and sleep most of the day.  Many years ago, they used to say, "Never eat after eight at night".  Well, 8:00 PM is MY afternoon!  So I count my calories here on CC from midnight to midnight...and I eat my "breakfast" when I wake up...usually about 3:00-4:00 PM.  And I haven't noticed any difference in "how" I lose weight.  Just figure your total calories in a 24-hour period, no matter WHEN you eat.  I do, however, try to eat some protein a couple of hours before I go to sleep, since I heard on The Doctors TV show that you make most of your growth hormone (which helps you lose weight) while you're sleeping...and that you "need" low blood sugar in order to create that growth hormone.  Hence, I try not to eat carbs before I go to sleep...whenever that is. Well, other than the fact that the conclusion drawn by the title is the wrong way around (based on the content of the article), I thought it was a very GOOD article.  I had never considered that the softness of food would actually impact how many calories are absorbed!  Or that coarse foods require more energy to chew.  In that respect, it was a very informative article.  THANKS!

What clairelaine says makes a lot of sense.  You have to do what you KNOW you can sustain.  For me - I know I can not sustain going to a gym.  Maybe I can for a year or 6 months.  But life is messy and I know there will come a day when that gym is just a memory.  I decided it was not fair to me to pin my health or goals on something that may not be there every day.I decided to start walking and do resistance training at home.  I know I can do THIS.  For me, being practiced at and willing to do something so simple is a fail safe for the rest of my life.  I have no excuses.  Everything I need is right with me all of the time.  No matter where I am.  I took away the obstacles and it makes it a lot easier to just stick with it!

WELLLLL....I have a very similar story.  Over a period of a year and a half, I lost 83 lbs...down from 240.  Then, over a three month period of time, I gained back 29 lbs.  I got caught up in the "dark chocolate is good for you" warcry and started eating Lindt Lindors every day.  Also, Costco stopped carrying the "Sensible Portions Pita Bites" that I have with my hummus, so I bought Stacey's Pita Chips.  Now, those pita chips taste like toasted pie crust to me...and I went completely overboard! One day, I "caught myself" after eating half a bag of them!  And you KNOW how big those Costco bags are!  But even that didn't stop me.  It wasn't until I stepped on the scale one day and it said 189 that I FREAKED!  THEN I got back on the horse...and I've now lost 19 of those regained pounds.

THIS time, I've integrated more of the foods I love into my daily regimen.  I eat half a baked potato with sour cream and bacon bits, for example.  NOT low-fat sour cream...because I KNOW I wouldn't keep THAT up.  But that's an entire meal for me.  I have five or six of those "tiny meals" a day and do Pilates on my own machine at home, every day.  And since the Pilates workout also helps my Fibromyalgia and back pain (from degenerated discs), I WILL keep THAT up! Hopefully, until the day I take a "dirt nap"!

And, thanks to CalorieCount, now I don't get down on myself if I eat something high-calorie or, due to time constraints, skip a day of Pilates. If I have Papa Murphy's Roasted Garlic & Chicken pizza, for instance (that my neighbor brought me), I just look it up and enter it into my "calorie count" for the day. AND I only ate one regular slice! AND it was enough. Interestingly enough, due to the "cheat to lose weight" principle, when I go up to 1700 calories in a day and go back down to 1200-1300 the following day, I actually lose more! Here's a VERY informative forum thread about that:

http://caloriecount.about.com/cheating-diet-i ncrease-fat-loss-ft7139

The KEYS here are: Get back on the horse; Don't "bash" yourself; Think about how good you looked in those smaller clothes; Adopt a regimen that you know you can maintain; and Don't eat low-cal EVERY day. Go up to maintenance level (or even above) one day a week.

Here's to your future SUCCESS!!! YOU CAN DO IT!!!

Have you heard of chronic fatigue syndrome? Maybe this is a possibility...

This was my first "instinct"...but if you say you've always been this way, then you don't have CFS.  I've had it for 19 years now, and I have a few questions for you.  1) Do you have times when you feel "normal", and then all of a sudden, your energy level "bottoms out" within 2-5 minutes?  Like someone is "turning you down"?  2) When you get really tired, do you also have either body aches or a sore throat and swollen lymph nodes?  3) Do you have trouble with your vision, concentration, and/or short-term memory?

If your answers to the above questions are "Yes", then you may very well have Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and should get diagnosed properly.  That involves ruling out every other thing that it could possibly be.

Mmmm, very interesting. Thanks for the opinions. Gwenyth went on to say she eats WHATEVER she wants and doesn't cut out any food. That's why she works out 2 hours a day, 6 days a week.

BUT, I do not believe that someone like her eats junk food etc. I just get so sick of all the contradictions when it comes to training.

Fit person saying "I eat whatever I want" = There are no restricted foods in my diet, but 99% of the time I eat healthy. Ocasionally I allow myself a treat. On top of that I work out a lot.

I can say that I eat WHATEVER I want, and I do, but certainly not how often as I wantand not in the quantity I want. My favorite foods tend to be healthy ones - lucky me - but my weak point is chocolate (I'd have HUGE chocolate milk with whole hazelnuts bars every day if I could Embarassed but I just eat a piece every once in a while...

OMG! That would be ME! I not only have a huge bag of Lindt Lindor truffles sitting across from me, but I also have a friend in Germany who sends me Ritter Sport bars twice a year.  (My favorite being the milk or dark chocolate ones with whole hazelnuts!) Yet, I only eat a small piece "every once in awhile".  Sure would LIKE to do in a whole bar, or a dozen or so truffles EVERY DAY, though!

The thing that I love about the forums is the recurring realization that...I'm NOT THE ONLY ONE!  THANKS! Smile
