HAPPY CHINESE NEW YEAR

RAT

What is your favourite variety of cheese? Cheddar and Feta. Mmm...

Rats are usually tied in with unsanitary conditions. What is your worst memory relating to food hygiene? Finding random gross-looking things in the school's cafeteria meat.

OX

What is your favourite preparation of beef - or beef flavoured product? I like steak -- so long as there is absolutely no redness or pink at all.

Oxen are commonly used for manual labour purposes. What’s your favourite thing to eat after a hard day’s work, or an exam, or a long study or workout session, etc? I don't have a favorite. It just depends on what I may be craving at that moment.

TIGER

Tiger, tiger, burning bright, famous for it’s vibrant stripes. What is the most colourful thing you’ve eaten? I'm not sure. Perhaps a fruit or desert of some sort.

Would you ever hunt for your food, whether meat or foraging? Have you already? Personally, I never would. I would not be able to eat something knowing that I actually killed it. I can eat it if I pretend it wasn't actually alive at one moment in time.

RABBIT

What’s your favourite preparation of carrots? Raw.

Would you eat a rabbit? No.

DRAGON

How spicy do you like your food? If it is something that is meant to be spicy, then I like it spicy enough where there is bite to it -- but it doesn't burn and make you feel like your throat is on fire.

How well-done do you like your foods? Fan of burnt toast, perhaps? I like burnt things. :)

SNAKE

What is your worst memory relating to food poisoning? Never had it.

Ever swallowed anything whole that you wouldn't normally? Yes. I don't recall specifics, but I know it has happened.

HORSE

Horse is considered a delicacy in some countries but taboo in many others. Would you eat horse? No.

What’s your favourite preparation of oats? In oatmeal or a desert or something.

RAM

Are you a fan of goat’s cheese or milk? How about ewe’s? Never had any of them.

Goats are known to eat pretty much anything. What’s the most random thing you have ever consumed - even if you weren’t supposed to eat it? Paper...lol. I'd chew on it in class when I was younger and it would end up going down my throat.

MONKEY

How do you like your bananas? Either just out of the peel, or mixed with other fruit, yogurt, oatmeal, etc.

Monkey brain is a Chinese delicacy. What is the most vile part of an animal you have consumed, or seen for sale? Yuck...I've always just eaten the "normal" things. I'm not much into delicacies...

ROOSTER

Are you an advocate of free-range poultry rearing, or do you not care? Yes. That is where they aren't stuffed into houses, right?

Considering many chickens are corn-fed, how do you best like to use corn in cooking? Corn on the cob, cooked on the grill. Om nom nom!

DOG

Dogs can tolerate a lot of foods but are extremely sensitive to others. Do you have foods you can’t stomach - literally? Not that I can think of. (I also haven't actually tried a whole lot of things that might do this.)

What is a balanced diet to you? Getting the recommended portions of most everything...?

PIG

Despite being well-mannered creatures, “pig” has far too many negative connotations. What food, cuisine, celebration or otherwise, do you stop counting for? I dunno. Probably Thanksgiving or Christmas.

What’s your favourite preparation of pork - or a pork flavoured product? I dunno how it is done, but my sister makes this excellent pork dish!

Thanks everyone.

I do get to choose and, since I am going to a baseball game that night (meaning I am indulging in some soft serve with fudge!) I want to not indulge too much at breakfast.

I recently thought about possibly going to Dunn Bros Coffee. I know they have breakfasts (i.e. breakfast sandwiches, omelets, french toast, toast, bagels, muffins, etc.) Would going there and getting some sort of meal be okay do you think? We'll probably be eating this later in the morning, so I might be skipping lunch. And considering I'll be at the baseball game at night...well, my dinner will be the ice cream and some peanuts or something.

Maintaining Maintenance--Which do you find most difficult? Jul 08 2009

I'm only just starting to maintain (well, knowingly anyway)  and from this start and past experience, exercising is definitely going to be more difficult for me! I know I can eat healthily, with good portions and hopefully very few cheat days...but I'm not an exercise enthusiast! In the summer, walking the dog and trying to keep up with yoga, pilates, etc. right now isn't difficult. Biking and such...yeah, already it is harder to continue. Now when school starts up again, it will definitely be even more difficult!

No, I'm not underweight. I've been fluctuating between 121 - 123 for the past few weeks, am 19 and about 5'6''. I'll try to start adding more to my meals/snacks to get up closer to 1800. I recently got some protein shake mix which I will probably add to my breakfasts, so that should help.

Original Post by agruskin:

ahh, ok, granted, we all have different goals, yes, some ppl may be overweight and hence will need to eat less to lose weight, or excercise more a combo of both BUT, 1200 is the MINIMUM for a SEDENTARY female to LOSE weight.

this is not an eating disorder site meal plan thread, please, do yourself a favor and cherish your body, you only get one!

I know this, but I'm trying to recover from not necessarily an ED, but most definitely a period of disordered eating (i.e. probably eating an average of 600 - 800 calories a day for close to a month) in May and June. So right now, hitting 1200 - 1300 calories a day is good for me, something that I am proud of doing. (Yet also nervous about in the back of my mind, even though I know I should be eating more. It's difficult.)

I forgot to state it, perhaps, but I'm hoping to get up to eating something like 1500 - 1800 calories a day. I know having a handful of nuts a day will easily do that but my mindset isn't quite there yet so...sorry that I may not be eating the right about yet. But I was working on it and thought perhaps actually posting what I ate where others could see might help.

Once again, sorry.

Hey...I've been following this thread for awhile and figured maybe I would start posting. :) I'm trying to reach 1200 - 1300 calories a day, and add more from there as I can. (I lost my weight via restricting a lot of calories, and now that I am trying to maintain and tone, I'm trying to slowly start eating a good, healthy amount. I'm definitely getting there but it is taking awhile because I feel like if I eat more I'll gain weight, etc. etc. Anyway!) I'm also eating smaller amounts of calories because I'm not working out as strenuously as I previously have. Typically now it is only walking the dog and then doing yoga or pilates or something.

I'm a relatively picky eater as well, and have been trying to get more protein into my diet. So perhaps actually getting involved in this forum will help give me even better ideas. Here was yesterday:

Breakfast: Yoplait FF Yogurt, Blueberries, Strawberries, Coffee w/cream

Lunch: Oatmeal w/cinnamon, 2 egg white egg beaters, broccoli, brussel sprouts

Snack: Cottage cheese w/microwaved apple and cinnamon

Dinner: Salad w/cucumbers and raspberry vinaigrette dressing, boca burger on wheat bread, strawberries, milk

Snack: Coffee w/cream, Luna Bar

Calories: 1201 -- probably a bit more 'cause I snacked on stuff at work which I didn't count.

My breakfasts during the weekdays (Monday - Thursday anyway) are typically very light because I babysit really early and don't have time to make anything really big. Plus most of the time I'm not too hungry.

Thus far today...

Breakfast: Dannon 4oz yogurt, blueberries, strawberries, coffee w/cream

Lunch: Oatmeal w/chocolate "protein" shake mix added to it, 6 oz egg white egg beaters, brussel sprouts, baked apple w/cinnamon

Snack: Luna Bar, Coffee w/cream

I tend to try to eat lighter before supper because I like to snack at night. For dinner tonight I'm planning on having tilapia with broccoli, carrots, probably some fruit, milk, etc. As a snack I will either have another Luna Bar (I love these things) or a "protein" shake (I don't know if it can really be considered that or not) mixed with strawberries.

I literally just tried this out for my lunch. I added a packet of rich milk chocolate shake mix (60 calories) to a bowl of oatmeal to add some extra protein. It was actually really good! But considering the packets have a lot of vitamins, added fiber and protein, I'm sure adding it to nearly anything would make a good chocolate-fix thing!

Cold cereal, oatmeal or museli? I'm becoming really fond of oatmeal with cinnamon or chocolate/vanilla/whatever protein shake mix...yum. As a snack, though, I do love cold cereal!

Kale, collard greens or Swiss chard? Er...I don't know what they are.

Soy milk, almond milk or oat milk? I stick with just plain old skim milk. Never had alternatives, though I guess if I did, it may be soy. Flavored...

Favorite way to cook veggies? Steamed. Unless it is carrots...then raw.

Favorite fruit for breakfast? All fruit! Love it. Though I do enjoy adding different berries to yogurt. Yum!

Favorite fruit for snack? Microwaved apple with cinnamon drizzled on top.

Best way to eat carrots? Raw.

Whole grains are best in: bread, pasta or baked goods? Erm...bread?

Favorite healthy dessert? Frozen yogurt...or, if it is any kind of healthy bakery item...that. Anything sweet, really!

Favorite nut butter? Peanut butter. Mmm!

Luna Bars, LaraBars or Think Bars? I have recently discovered LUNA bars, and have fallen in love!

Black beans, kidney beans or garbanzo beans? Yuck. I don't like beans.

Black, spice or green tea? Spice, I suppose. Assuming that is like chai tea. I also like the fruit type teas.

How do you take your tea? Hot with splenda.

Local or organic from store? Organic if I can afford it.

Favorite farmer's market item? Sweet corn.

Favorite combinations for trail mix? Obviously, the not-so-healthy one with peanuts, raisin, M&M's is always good. There is also one, whose brand name I forget, which has dried cherries, cranberries, almonds, pistacios, and granola. O.M.G!!! Soooo good.

Favorite dried fruit? Apples and cherries.

Baked potato or baked yam? Potato

Favorite way to eat dark chocolate? As long as it is Mint Dark Chocolate, just as it is. Bite, suck, chew, etc.

I had a "bigger" breakfast than normal on account of it being a holiday and my being bored. Lol.

French toast (with Sara Lee's 45 cal./slice bread), 4 egg whites (two for french toast, two for side), topped with strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries. Coffee w/fat free creamer. Good, big breakfast but with only 246 calories!

I don't know how accurate this is or whatnot, or how helpful it will be for you, but I'm giving you my experience and/or thoughts. So...

You may not have seen a difference when looking in the mirror, not because there isn't one (you've lost almost 20 lbs...there is sure to be some difference!), but likely because of your body image. Your idea of what you look like is probably still set as what you looked like at 192.5 lbs. It may just take you awhile to actually realize and recognize the weight that you have lost, to notice it when you look in the mirror. I know this is what it is like for me, anyway. From my highest weight to my current weight, I've lost around 50 lbs. and yet when I look in the mirror I don't see the weight that I am. I see myself at least 10 maybe 20 lbs heavier -- prior to the start of some complicated stuff.

But really, in the end, I'm guessing your lack of seeing a difference is just you needing more time to recognize it. Do you kind of get what I'm saying?

Health & Support Lack of Support Jun 23 2009
03:57 (UTC)
2

I don't care whether or not I lose more weight. I am happy with the weight that I am. It is what I see in the mirror that I am unhappy with, and I know that the only way to improve that is by toning up -- which is what I am planning, and working, on doing.

Right now I am trying to maintain, and I am increasing my calorie in take. And yes, I am afraid of eating 1200 calories. I'm paranoid that doing so will suddenly make me gain weight since I was eating less than that (which I know is wrong, and I am ashamed of doing...but I couldn't stop myself). However I'm slowly pushing myself to eat more and more. The past few days I've reached that, and today I got more, so I'm making progress. Reaching 1800 will be a struggle, and I don't know how that will work...but I'll try.

If I only focus on weight training and do very little cardio, though...won't that almost be counter-productive in a sense? 'Cause while I will gain muscle and tone up...won't I also not be getting rid of whatever fat I may put on by increasing the calorie intake? (Considering I haven't been eating what I should.)

Health & Support Bloating Question(s)... Jun 21 2009

I just meant that I have heard/read/whatever that when someone is starving themselves, or is starved, their stomaches tend to bloat (for reasons I forget). So I was questioning as to whether someone may or may not become more bloated based on them not eating "enough" calories.

What other foods are more likely to prevent bloating?

Health & Support Lack of Support Jun 20 2009

I have already explained to her that I am doing this healthily, and that I am not as concerned with the weight as I am about toning up. It doesn't seem as if she actually believes me though because she keeps bringing this up. Last night she actually said I should go see a doctor or something., :/

Health & Support Afraid of eating 1200 calories... Jun 19 2009
05:29 (UTC)
5

How many calories I eat, lately at any rate, is rising. A few weeks ago I doubt I reached 600 calories. I basically lived off of fruit and very little grains, etc. Today my food log says I ate about 1145 or something close to that, though I assume it was more like 1200 because I had some bites of little things here and there that probably added up. I would say, on average, I am eating between 900 and 1200 calories a day.

And yes, I do know that there are health consequences. I had a similar experience almost two years ago, lost my period for nearly 6 months, almost fainted at work, etc. I am making sure not to have that happen, and have not been weak this time -- nor am I going, in my opinion, as overboard as I previously have.

I also know I am at a healthy weight. I am pleased with my weight, but it is when I look into the mirror and see so much that I just hate that I want to lose more, tone up, etc. And I become paranoid with what I am eating. Like mawata said, I'm afraid that if I start consistently eating 1200 calories or more a day again, I will gain the weight I lost and become even less happy with myself.

I do agree that I probably have an emotional/psychologyical problem more so than a weight one. Really, I always have. But I don't know how to fix that either and...the whole thing is just a mess, really!

Weight Loss Help, Traveling to Midwest--Diet & Exercise away from home Jun 14 2009
05:08 (UTC)
2

May I ask which state you are traveling to? There are, of course, many places where the food choices aren't that great. But just as I assume there are many places where you live, there are also many in the Midwest which have pretty decent, healthy food choices.

If you are staying with family, and thus will be eating more with them, why not stop by a local farmers market or something and buy some of your own food? Try making meals for your family, or just yourself. That way you can still maintain your own eating habits. Either way, just try and make similar choices in the Midwest as you would where you live.

As for exercise...again, it depends on where you are going, but there tend to be (all the places I have been, lived, etc.) plenty of good walking/running/biking trails. And if you are anywhere near some bluffs (assuming you are in a state that isn't flat), go hiking! It's a beautiful time of year.

Health & Support How do you gain self-esteem and self-confidence? Jun 06 2009

Thanks for the feedback everyone.

I know that I really don't have a lot to worry about, and that there are probably billions to trillions of people who are worse of than I am. But thinking about that only makes me feel selfish and like I'm such a horrible person for worrying about myself rather than others that I am even more worthless than I already think I am. So yeah, I'm sorry I'm selfish but...the way I think of it, everyone has that right. They may not be as "bad off" as other people, but that doesn't stop them from feeling the way that they feel.

The problem with me focusing on other things that I am good at is that I don't really know what I am good at, what I have achieved, etc. I know I'm good at school. I've always been a straight-A student. But I really don't have any hobbies or interests that I can pick out. There is nothing that I can call my own. I don't know what my talents are or anything. I'm sure I have them, but they are nothing special enough for me to recognize them. Which is why I probably have such a hard time with confidence. I don't know what I should be confident about.
