It's interesting to see just how many body shapes are out there - measurements, BMI, waist-hip ratio, etc. couldn't possibly cover all these descriptions.  :)

octo's post reminded me that I forgot my shoulders..I like my shoulders as they are not slopey but more coat-hanger-like, which I enjoy.

Fluid retention just may be it..even when I've cut back on salt, caffeine, and whatnot, I never drink enough water anyway.  I am probably retaining what little of it I take in since I only get thirsty and drink fluids when I eat.  I definitely get nowhere near the recommended 8 glasses of water a day.

The Lounge Why do people dislike tall women? Jun 13 2009

I've never gotten the impression that most people dislike tall women.  The modeling industry prefers tall women, and there is a positive correlation between increased height and intelligence:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Height_and_intel ligence

The only advantage short women like me have is it's not too hard to find guys taller than us.  We have no other advantages of which I am aware.  So, be happy - how people look at you in high heels is not much of a concern compared to your advantage in intelligence and modeling preferences!

Hi again, I just responded to another one of your threads.  Yay for 5'1" shorties!

My measurements are 33/28/36.

It seems a little bit of cellulite is natural for all women.  I honestly don't know any women completely devoid of cellulite.

I prefer pants in size 8, they usually feel best on me.  But I also have jeans in 6-7, several pairs of pants in 10, and even a couple in 12!  Most pants, even in petite, are too long for me though since I have short legs, and I almost always have to get new pairs hemmed.  Ugh.

Great topic!

I love my legs, even though they are short.  I love them because they are muscular, and my fiance loves muscular legs.  :)  I have great definition on my calves, which are 13.5 inches in circumference.  I am also the rare woman who LIKES MY THIGHS, lol.  They are 20 inches in circumference, but the quads have great muscle tone, and even the hamstrings are getting toned too as I increase the variety of leg exercises I do.

I like having something of a bubble butt.  I have a fairly average breast size, and my waist isn't really where I'd prefer it to be, but my butt gives me more curves.  I've heard people say that having my waist-hip ratio at 0.78 is too masculine, but no one mistakes me for a male in person thanks to that butt, lol.  (Well, the breasts are also a giveaway as to my gender, but the butt helps also.)

My weight is also at a place I like.  I seem to feel best in the 110-115 range (I'm 5'1½").  The stomach can use more toning, but I am working on that.

Though I don't think about them as much, I am also happy with my arms.  My forearms are slender, yet my biceps and triceps are very strong for a woman my size.  I can curl 35 pounds eight straight times in one sitting, and I can do 60 pounds eight times on a tricep machine.

I have the tiniest hands of anyone I know.  They are so cute and small.   I also have small feet, and am glad to have them that way.

And even though it's apparently a health risk, I actually LIKE having narrow hips.  I'd rather have my waist reduced to meet the "preferred" waist-hip ratio rather than expand my hips while keeping the waist the same.

Weight Loss What else do you do besides limit calories? Jun 13 2009

Wow, we're almost identical on those stats you listed.  I am 5'1½", 115, small frame, generally size 8 (though I can wear anything from size 6-12 depending on fiber, cut, etc. of the pants).

When I lost weight, in addition to calorie reduction, I hit the gym 2-3 times a week and did a lot of incline treadmill walking (going against an incline burns LOTS of calories).  For my diet, I cut out refined starches and saturated/trans fats as much as possible, substituting healthier whole grains and mono/polyunsaturated fats instead.

Good replies here.  Yes, BMI is important, but there are other factors.  For instance, I am currently 5'1" 115, which is a good BMI (21.7), but my waist is 28 inches.  No matter what weight I am at, I consistently have just an eight inch difference between my waist and hips.  I have 36 inch hips right now (which in itself is a limited term as I don't really have much in the hips at all - it's mostly the backside, lol).  When I was at a 30 inch, my hips were 38.  When I was at a 27 inch waist in my skinniest days, my hips were 35.  I just seem genetically inclined to the avocado body shape, i.e. just barely under the 0.8 waist-hip ratio.  This isn't ideal for health reasons, but I've been unable to reduce the waist without reducing my hips/backside at the same time.

Foods Are carbs a good thing or bad? Jun 06 2009

sweetjune is right - the more unrefined, natural carbs are healthy, containing nutrients like B vitamins and fiber, and give you long lasting energy.  But refined flour is not so good.

In fact, the same applies to fat: saturated and trans aren't very healthy, but the body needs a decent amount of monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats for healthy cholesterol and triglyceride levels (nuts are one good source of these fats, and most nuts are low carb).

In essence, then, neither "low carb" or "low fat" addresses the real issue about different carbs or fats.  You need both of these in moderation, especially the good kinds for each category.

It's more likely that you entered in the wrong data as it's easy to do on that site.  First, make sure you find the area with the proper gender (male is near the top of the page, female is near the bottom of the page).  After typing in your age and weight, make sure you choose pounds/kilograms and inches/centimeters depending on which you are using to measure yourself.  Finally, for tape measurement, give your height, neck (circumference, not vertical length), waist, and hip measurements (whether in inches or centimeters depending on the option you chose).

Here is what my results look like:

Welcome.  I am also new.

We all start at different points in our exercise routines, so just start with what feels comfortable for you and gradually build up your routine.

Using the incline on a treadmill is a great way to burn extra calories without necessarily having to do exhausting speeds, by the way.  In fact, a person actually burns more calories by using the incline at slower speeds than someone going on a flat surface at a faster speed because going uphill involves force resistance - so your body has to expend more energy to get up that hill, so to speak.

Reducing calories and walking/running on a treadmill incline helped me immensely in my weight loss goals.  Just stick with it and you'll start seeing a difference - it won't be immediate, but it'll be constant and efficient.

Weight training is also good - it doesn't cause weight loss the way walking and running do, but it's great for toning.  I incorporate both weight training and walking/running in my exercise routine also.

I also used the tape measurement method on the link simmyy posted.  I am 25.9%, within the Acceptable range.  I work out, though, so I'd prefer to be in the Fitness range, lol.
