OMG, Swine flu!!

RUN!!!

(I am sure it's nothing.  I "sprained" my throat once gulping down a glass of wine.  It took two weeks to totally heal).

Perhaps you missed the part I wrote about water weight?  I could gain a lb right now if I drank a 16 oz glass of water.  All things being equal, water weight is up and is down, but it evens out in the end.

Technically speaking, your body can not gain weight if you aren't actually taking in a positive surplus of calories.  Any weight you will gain would be from the accumulation of water.

There is a common misconception that its possible to gain weight without eating more calories, and not reducing your activity level.  This just isn't true.  Unless, of course, you are eating the same and have reduced your activity level.

The risk of eating too little would be in throwing your metabolism out of whack.  You'd feel sluggish, and consequently your activity levels would drop as your body attempts to protest itself.  So all of a sudden you think you are burning 1300, but its actually 1100...

mendoza13 - don't assume that this is something the OP does on a regular basis.  You so graciously calculated the calories for us, and eating around 2000 on one day isn't going to hurt anything!

Are you assuming that this is all that person ate that day?  I am not.

Studies have also indicated that green/white/black teas contain flouride, which the tree that produces the tea leaves naturally absorbs from the soil, and that drinking enough of the tea on a daily basis can cause one to ingest potentially harmful levels of fluoride?

Not sure about this but many communities put floride in their water to purify it.  Somehow I doubt that tea has more then you'd be exposed to in everyday drinking water.

I don't know about "super green tea" but I am an avid regular green tea drinker.  It's is very heathy, as it contains healthy anti-oxidants, and enzymes.  Tea is also an appetite supressant.  So it an excellent coice to drink when you need to cut back the calories.

Also it seems that cultures who drink a lot of green tea tend to live longer.

I understand about "taking a day off" but that's not it.  That is borderline binge eating, which pretty much defeats the purpose of dieting and general health management.  Binging on empty calories like that is exactly what you should not do, to expect a long life.

Yes, more blunt talk from me.  It's a bad habit, but I am really just trying to help.

Well lets see

Oreos-
Servings per container 15
Cals per serving 160, so you ate about 7.5 servings = 1200 calories

Cheese puffs-
serving size 1 OZ, calories 121
Based on your Oreo consumption, I am gonna put you down for 6 OZ, so thats a total of 726

Cheese sandwich-
Hard to tell if you meant grilled cheese, or what the bread is, but based on the other stuff you ate, i am going to go with white bread and american cheese.
One slice of white bread 70 calories
One slice of american cheese 94 calories
a total of 164

For a grand total of 2090 calories.  This by the way is 10 calories shy of my daily allowance of 2100 (being a 35 year old male).  I would also feel bad not to mention that nothing you ate is at all even remotely healthy for you.

At this rate of consumption, you'll probably gain something.  I can't imagine eating all that and being able to exercise.  I'd probably throw it all up.

Sorry for the bluntness, but thats the rub.

There is an argument that fat free milk is less healthy then whole milk because without the fat the milk can not carry fat soluble nutrients.  Thus skim milk is not nearly as healthy.  Also I heard that skim milk is made with powered milk, which has me a bit worried, but I haven't confirmed that yet.

Fat can be a good thing, in moderation.

This is like rule 1.  And giving kids this crap is even worse!

I take my child to a local homemade ice cream shoppe.  It's good quality stuff, and you are giving your money to local companies, not some behemoth devil like McD's!

Agreed here.  You'll need to take in more calories once your exercise program progresses.  You body will demand more, as your metabolism increases.

I would agree with 1350-1400.

Minor quibble though, vegitarian does not equal healthy, by default!  There will be plenty of meat eaters that will outlive any of us - its all about balance and moderation.

Yeah i think that its important to remember that soy is considered a "processed" food.  As well as any of the other refined seeds, like white flour, white rice, etc.  So cutting back on it is important.

The wife and I allow ourselves some processed foods, but not many, for example last night:

Baby spinach and mix greens salad, with celery, carrots, parsnip, onion, and grated parm.

Paneer and tomato curry over spiced white rice (this was outstanding)

a slice of wheat artisan bread (i think it was tuscan boule), with irish butter.

white wine

I find that rice is the least "evil" for all the processed and refined starches (also you can add spices to offset this).  I suppose someone could make the argument for potatoes, but I think they don't have enough nutrition per calorie.

I think you are a bit too strict with that sedentary setting.  I run over 35 miles a week, yet I work a desk job 9 to 5.  (I run 5 out of every 7 days)

According to your definition I live a sedentary lifestyle.

The Western concept of a proper weight is so out of whack it's laughable.  You could explain to them this fact, and watch their reactions!

Frankly I just ignore the naysayers.  I attribute it to a mix of jealousy and guilt.

You are not eating enough.  1200 is the minimum calories for a small (5', 100 lb.), sedate woman.   You are taller, heavier and exercising, so your body likely needs closer to 1800-2000 and you could still be losing weight.

Also, one week is not very long, especially if you have started exercising.  Starting a new exercise progrm can cause your body to over-react to your new routine and retain fluids.  It's not a permanent thing, it's only temporary, so don't let it freak you out too much.

Weight loss isn't a race, it's a change of life-style.  It sounds like you are trying to do too much too fast, and the lack of results can be really frustrating.  But your body will respond if you give it time.

I agree with this.  It's uncommon knowledge that you actually need carbs to burn fat, also proper hydration helps a ton.

Don't give up, you body will adjust.

Weight Loss Can bananas make you fat? Jun 09 2009
16:31 (UTC)
Original Post by miso_soup:

Bananas are awesome! Along with blueberries, they're absolutely my favourite fruit. They taste good, fill you up, and they're wonderfully good for you. Here's why:

  • Bananas contain 3 natural sugars (sucrose, fructose and glucose). Combined with a high fiber content, they provide a HUGE energy boost. Not surprisingly, they're a popular choice with professional athletes.
  • Bananas are a major source of vitamin B6: essential for new cell formation and for the processing of carbohydrates. B6 is also good for the skin.
  • Bananas contain lots of iron, potassium and magnesium, yet very little sodium - so they're good for the blood & building muscle mass; and are an excellent choice for people with high blood pressure.
  • Bananas contain 'tryptophan' - a building block for serotonin. Serotonin has a calming effect on the brain: many contemporary antidepressants - specifically SSRI's - also function by increasing the level of serotonin in the body. Which is NOT to say that bananas can replace SSRI's in treatment of depression, but they sure can't hurt.
  • Bananas are good for insect bites - rubbing a bite with a banana skin can significantly reduce swelling and irritation. (I've not tried this, so I'd be interested to hear if anyone has, and what the results were).

There's probably more stuff that bananas are awesome at, but I have to get back to work. So, yeah. I'm a banana fan. One a day, every day. Don't care how many calories :)

Weight Loss Question about Atkins Jun 09 2009

Yeah, it is.  So are all the massive quantities of sat. fat and cholesterol.

However, I am of the belief that its worth it if you are in a stage of obesity where your life may depend on losing weight.  If not, I am not sure its worth putting your body through that just to lose 10 lbs.

Weight Loss How exact calories to I need to consume a day to actually LOSE weight? Jun 09 2009

Exactly?  Hard to give you an exact number.

Lets assume you are 30 years old, a female who is 5'5" with a medium build.  I am going to put you in for light exercise.

Your intake should be anywhere in the range of 1500-1750 calories per day to lose weight.  Remember 3000 calories is approx 1 lb of weight.

Weight Loss Question about Atkins Jun 09 2009

Just be careful.  The Adkins "fools" a lot of people initially because 90% of that you lost will be all water weight.  The body needs a certain amount of carbs to properly burn fat.

Also the long term effects of ketosis are not immediately known.  Apparently it may damage kidneys or liver, if you allow the ketones in your blood to get too high.  There is also the impact of all that excessive cholesterol.  Get it checked often.

It's a great investment.  It can help you understand what HR you need to be at for aerobic (fat burning) exercise and help you stay out of anaerobic.

Also its great if you are serious about improving your ability to run longer and faster!

I'd classify you as moderate, but for the average american you are actually moderate to high.

Do you get your heart pumping on the runs?  Any idea what your peak heart rate is on your tough exercise days?

Weight Loss Can bananas make you fat? Jun 09 2009

You can get fat by eating ANY food.

It's all about calories you intake and how much you burn.  If you consistently run a surplus of calories then you will gain weight.  Bananas are a great food, and good for dieting, but the bigger issue is how much you are eating.

I eat a ton of fruit.  The sugars in fruit aren't like cane sugar.  They are metabolized slower since they are more complex and are eaten along with fiber.  Yesterday I had a banana, a melon, an apple and some strawberries for breakfast/lunch.  I munched on some sunflower seeds as a snack to get a bit of good fats.  I ended up running a 300 calorie deficit yesterday.

Weight Loss Has running helped you lose weight? I need to hear from you!! :) Jun 09 2009

You should definitely train with a heart rate monitor, and make sure you keep training aerobically.  Eventually you'll notice that you can run further and faster at the same pace, and the weight will jus tmelt off.  Do not train too quickly or run too fast as this will not allow you to burn off the fat.

You should make a plan and stick to it, no matter what.
