I have 2 fuzzbuckets named Josie, an 8 yr old husky-border collie mix (our best guess) and Cassidy, a 7 year old australian shepherd-border collie mix (again, total guess). They were adopted as puppies from a shelter, but are completely unrelated. However people always assume they are siblings because of their coloration and their blue eyes. Their photo is my avatar. |

| The Lounge | Does age matter? | Nov 24 2009 22:13 (UTC) |

I think it matters to a certain degree, but any relationship is what you make of it. Obviously if the age difference is small, it will matter not at all, but if it's a great age difference then it will matter more. Not to say it will be a make or break issue, but it could be. There are plenty of people who make a go of it despite 10, 20, 30+ years gap in age. My sister is one of them (husband is 26 years her senior). They make a good couple, but I would be really sad to know that I will likely be growing old alone. Of course, anyone can lose their SO at any age, but when they're that much older you KNOW you will lose them at some point, unless you die young. My DH and I are 2 years, 6 months, and one day apart (he's older). We met in our late 20s so it made no difference whatsoever.

I spent $100 on a juicer. Why? I have no idea! The thing was a monster to clean, too. I used it once and put it away, never to be seen again. I don't even like juice that much. |

Original Post by dkenworthy: Ok, we happened to get escarole with our fennel, and so we tried this recipe last week. It was awesome, but I think it was because the strong flavor of the mustard masked the flavor of the fennel. I tried roasting it but I couldn't eat it, unless it is drowned in a sauce. I think I have found the only vegetable I really don't care for! |

We try to eat at home as much as possible to avoid that as well. Unfortunately we have no "veggie" restaurants here, so if we go out we usually end up with a dinner salad. |

I tried "homemade" cranberry sauce once and I thought it was disgusting. I love the canned stuff. I think this is THE ONLY food where I prefer canned over fresh. I have a weird thing about textures and I don't like like lumps of fruit or pulp. I also can't do OJ unless it is pulp-free. It makes me gag. I don't know why people get up in arms over it. Who cares? Everyone's preferences are different. Just because someone likes canned doesn't make them inferior.... especially on something you likely only eat once a year. |

| Vegetarian | What are you having/making for Thanksgiving? | Nov 23 2009 22:59 (UTC) |

Yes, I roasted sweet potatoes and onions this year (we made our Thanksgiving dinner yesterday so we could celebrate with our friends here in town. We are spendign the actual holiday out of state with the in-laws). I tossed them with olive oil, parsley, rosemary, salt, and pepper. They were delicious and everyone loved them - said it was great to have something other than the "traditional" syrupy sweet candied concoction. |

I don't know how traditional your family is, but Thanksgiving is probably not the best time to be introducing new foods to people. Most people are geared up to enjoy "Thanksgiving" foods, which to most people (non-vegetarians) this does NOT include tofu... therefore they are already going to be biased against it, and disappointed. I think it would be better to try to introduce it on a day where there are no expectations. Maybe the day after? If you are looking for a turkey substitute, there are many pre-made concoctions that are quite nice. I got the Quorn Turk'y Roast (not vegan) and a Field Roast Stuffed Celebration Roast, (vegan) and both were delicious. I invited 6 non-vegetarians over and they all enjoyed it. I was surprised that many people like the field roast better, although I prefer the Quorn. If you really want to make something at home, I recommend Bryanna's seitan and tofu turkey. I made it last year and it was delicious (even non-vegs loved it and were sneaking bits out of the fridge later, so I know they weren't just being polite) although very time consuming to make. I recommend making it in advance. Good luck! |

Yes, I like the Moosewood books as well. I get most of my recipes online, actually. blog.fatfreevegan.com and allrecipes to name a couple. Allrecipes is not all healthy, but they do include nutritional info and ratings, which are very helpful. I also love my Joy of Cooking cookbook, but most of the recipes are not very healthful in general. However it is usually not too difficult to make a few minor substitutions to cut down on oil, fat, sugar, etc. and make a recipe much more healthy, and you can always sub fresh ingredients, even if the recipe doesn't call for that. |

| Recipes | Tofu. Never had it. | Nov 16 2009 20:24 (UTC) |

Good for you for trying it and not giving up when the results are less than optimal. The key is definitely in the prep. If I don't have the time to follow all the steps (freezing, pressing, etc.) I don't bother because I know that it won't be as good as it can be. It should never be mushy. If you are pressed for time, you can fry, broil, or bake silken tofu which doesn't require much prep. It does have a lot different flavor/texture, though. You can also buy dried tofu (I've only seen at Asian markets) and baked tofu (available at higher end grocery stores like Whole Foods) in a variety of flavors. It's a little more expensive, but it can be eaten as is right out of the package (just heat it up if desired) and the texture is great. I recently bought grilled tofu and was very disappointed - it was basically just the unflavored white block with a few brown marks drawn on, so I would say save your money and stay away from that kind! I suggest you try tofu at a restaurant so you can see what it should be like. Most Asian restaurants, plus vegetarian restaurants if you know of any, should offer it. As far as chains, PF Changs and Pei Wei both serve tofu. |

Yay for you and your new dog! My dogs generally only eat every other day. They will eat treats and stuff, but their regular food they just don't want it every day. They are definitely not malnourished and vet said not to to worry, that is just how they like to eat. Also they barely eat when we are gone for a few days, but will start wolfing food soon after we get home (we have a pet sitter). Worry and stress can definitely affect their appetites just like it does ours. No doubt he has been through a lot, but should start eating soon once he begins to get settled in. Then again, maybe he just doesn't like the food he was offered? Some dogs can be pretty picky. I have one dog that is very finicky and has to think about the food you give her before she decides if she will eat it. The other dog will eat anything you give him. He swallows first, asks questions later, LOL. Ask the foster family what they were feeding him. |

Thanks. I guess I was thinking I would see more jerseys and shorts that went together but I guess they are all separate. The shorts on the second link are still just the black shorts, or black with accents. I don't want black (too hot). |

I second resistance bands - those also are great if you ever travel. Real weights are impossible to travel with (flying that is), but with the bands you can easily bring them along, so you don't have to give up your work out routine even if you are traveling. |

Kashi's version of shredded wheat and their blueberry cereal and black currant cereal are tasty and better for you than most others. Kashi is also much cheaper than the majority of the other "bad for you" cereals, oddly enough. |

Beano is not vegetarian. It contains gelatin. However I believe there are veg substitutes out there - you just have to search for them. You can also make or buy veg Worcestershire sauce. |
