Maintaining um, what happened? Sep 17 2009
17:35 (UTC)

hey mr. pilgrim, thanks so much for your advice. it is possible my metabolism has slowed down i guess. I usually do get a pretty decent breakfast, but I'll see what I can do to make it a little higher in protein.

Also, I run about 2 miles a day, six days a week for excerise.

I would conclude that the weight might be water; however, water weight usually falls off after about a week or so, right? And yes, my bms are pretty average.

I am going to see my nutritionist today for the first time in about two weeks; we'll see how that goes.

Thanks so much for your help. c:

Foods How many servings of fruits & vegetables do you eat daily? Jul 19 2009

I eat 6-8 servings of fruit a day, and 4-6 veggies. One small-medium piece of fruit is a serving, but a large one (like those gargantuan frankenfood bananas and apples) are two. One cup of strawberries is about seven or eight medium strawberries. One serving of raspberries, blackberries or blueberries is 3/4 cup. One serving of leafy greens is one cup. One half cup of cooked vegetables of any kind is one serving.

Weight Gain do i really need to gain weight? Jul 09 2009

Well, hey there. I too am 5'7", and I used to weigh somewhere around your current weight. I promise you, it's not healthy. My dietician says that an ideal weight for our height is 135. I know you say when you were 135 you still felt chubby and unhappy. Were you weight training at the time? Were you eating healthy foods and a balanced diet?

Even if you don't want to gain all the way back up to 135 (I do. c:), I suggest that you get up to at least 120-125, or until you start getting your periods back. If it makes you feel better, you can try to gain some of that in muscle by strengh training--the best method for that is to do fewer reps using more weight. This will give you a more muscular, toned physique that might inspire you to gain even more.

Weight Gain Bloated Belly? Jul 09 2009
15:00 (UTC)
16

Hey, Don't worry. The bloating is 100% normal. Everyone I know who has recovered from an eating disorder gets the belly at some point or another--the best thing to do is just keep eating. The only good solution is time. I know how frustrating that is to hear, especially when it seems like you're just gaining immediately and it won't stop--but it will, I promise. A couple of tips:

-Talk to your doctor about recovering/gaining, especially if you are severely underweight. If you start adding food too soon and you are very underweight, you risk several health complications. Are you seeing a psychologist? A dietician? Help from professionals makes recovery more likely to stick.

-If you have already spoken to your doctor and gotten his/her O.K, increase your intake to 2500 calories as soon as possible. Yes, it seems like a lot, and yes, you will definitely gain some water weight. Which leads to my nex point:

-Don't, don't, don't weigh yourself. This is harder than it seems. You may think, "I can take it, I won't overreact." YOU may not overreact, but your ED might, and then you're back to square one and you'll have to go through all that bloating, again. So the best strategy is to

-Keep eating! I can't stress this enough. One day restricting leads to another and then you're worse than you started. The only sure way to make the bloat deflate and the metabolism speed up is to keep eating.

Tips for bloating:

-Drink less soda.

-Steam or cook veggies.

-I see you're vegan...is that purely for animal rights reasons, or is it what ED wants? Really ask yourself that, because a huge part of recovery is understanding that food is fuel, and nothing should be off-limits.

-Beano is a girl's best friend.

Good luck!

Foods Tips for Eating Less Processed Foods? Jul 07 2009

Actually, eating a larabar is about the same as eating a handful of nuts, dates and dried cherries/cranberries/lime/coconut/apple. Really. I'm not one to get into the debate over what does and does not constitute clean eating, but in my opinion laras definitely fit the description. Also, for pure convenience's sake, they are far better than other options in the protein powerbar aisle. I say, eat as many as you like--the only better option would be to make your own.

Vegetarian Veggie burger?!?! Jul 03 2009

Gardenburger portabella burgers are the ABSOLUTE GREATEST when cooked then diced up and tossed with pasta and tomato sauce. You don't even have to add cheese--the burger has cheese in it! I know, right? It's incredible.

Apple sauce is fantastic. Fruit smoothies will also be your friend, you can make a whole meal out of them by adding milk (for protein), oatmeal (whole grain) and fruits or fruit juices. Also, if you're looking for meal replacements, Ensure is the greatest. It's totally balanced as far as macro and micro nutrients are concerned. The only problem is that it's disgusting UNLESS it's really really cold. Then it's pretty delicious.

Weight Loss Confused and need help with my calorie intake. Jun 28 2009
03:23 (UTC)

"But the thing is, when I eat more of stuff, I don't feel very good. I feel bigger and feel like I have to exercise or something. If I eat less I feel better and healthier and feel like I can relaxe because I just had a good meal."

I'm sorry, benny, but this sounds like the foundation of a very unhealthy relationship with food. The fact is, food is fuel--nothing more and nothing less. And right now, you are not giving your body enough fuel to operate.

To maintain your weight, you should probably be eating about 2500 calories, maybe more (since you're a teenage boy and growing still.) 1500 is the minimum intake for teenagers for weight loss. You'll need to add more to that to account for any exercise you do throughout the day.

I am currently seeing a nutritionist, and we work together not counting calories but using an exchange system similar to the kind used by diabetics. I am eating 2500 calories a day, and here are my exchanges:

15 starches

8 fruit

8-10 protein

7 fat

6 dairy (1 dairy also counts as a protein)

4 vegetable

Here is a list of exactly what one exchange is (1/2 c. pasta for starches, 1 oz. meat for protein, etc.)

This is how I organize my day:

Breakfast: 3 starches, 1 protein, 1 dairy, 2 fruit

AM snack: 2 starches, 1 protein, 1 fruit

Lunch: 3 starches, 2-3 protein, 1 dairy, 1 fruit, 1 vegetable

PM snack: 2 starches, 2-3 protein, 1 dairy, 2 fruit, 1 vegetable

Dinner: 3 starches, 2-3 protein, 1 fruit, 1 vegetable

Evening: 2 starches, 1 protein, 1 dairy, 1 fruit

I also incorporate my 7 fats, plus 3 dairy in there somewhere.

Hopefully this will help you figure out what to eat, when.

Eating more frequently speeds your metabolism. One sign of your metabolism speeding up is getting hot/sweating, especially after meals. However, the amount you are eating is not normal, healthy or sustainable. You should increase your calories to at least 1500 as a minimum. Please, please do this immediatly, for your own health.

I get the same sort of thing. I know if you're underweight/have a very low body fat percentage, your veins tend to stick out more just because there's no layer of fat to cover them...that's what mine do. :c I can also see my pulse in my major veins, like my stomach and my legs. I'm pretty sure it's just from being underweight.

kashi trail mix bars are my favorite snacks. delicious and wholesome! haha.

I prefer to eat "real food" when it's available, but sometimes when you're out, the best option is a bar of some kind. it definitely beats potato chips, in my opinion. :)

Health & Support Recovering From Anorexia - Meal Plan? Jun 24 2009

Hey, I just wanted to say--I'm pretty much the exact same as you. I started seriously restricting in January also, although I realize now that I've had AN thoughts for years. Since the first of the year I lost 24-25 pounds, averaging about 750 cals/day with 30 minutes of some kind of exercise every day. I'm also 5' 7", but I just started treatment a month or so ago, so my weight's around 120 now.

I'm not doing too well with the whole adding calories/concept of weight gain either, so my meal plan won't do you much good. I just wanted to let you know that you are most definitely not alone in your plight.

Oh, by the way--I don't know if your username's accurate or not but if so, my name's Katie too. c:

Maintaining Is this a good idea to check if you're bloated or not. Jun 18 2009

Not drinking water will only make you more bloated. Also, pickles are really high in sodium and if the popcorn was salted, that could do some damage as well. Sodas bloat you up too. Try to eat some asparagus and dandelion greens, drink some peppermint tea and lots of water. Wait a few days and your weight should return to normal.

Foods Anyone know of a healthy butter? Jun 15 2009

natural almond butter is really delicious, it's about 80 calories per tablespoon. normal and all-natural peanut butter is usually around 100 calories per tablespoon.

I also really like Horizon Organic Whipped Butter, it's real butter, but since it's whipped or whatever it comes in a tub and it has 50 cals/tablespoon which is HALF of what normal butter has.

If you're totally turned off by all of this, there's always sugar free preserves and jams for your toast. smucker's has some really nice ones for only 10 cals/tablespoon.

Foods Highest Protein for the calories Jun 14 2009

Fat free cottage cheese is EXCELLENT (1/4 c. has 35 calories and 7g of Protein).

Reduced fat or fat free tofu is also really good, with one ounce being about 35 calories and 7g protein.

Egg whites are the absolute lowest cal protein you can get--16 cals for one large egg white, with 4g of protein. That's because all egg whites ARE is protein, and one gram of protein=4 calories. 4g protein * 4 calories = one egg white! Try some scrambled with cheese and hot sauce, or soy sauce and green onions. mmm

Other peoples' comments about my appearance and eating were awful.

"Why aren't you eating any lasagna?"

"You're not trying to lose more weight, are you?"

"You need to gain a few pounds."

The worst were the friends who didn't even care, just accepted it as a fact of life:

"Hey, do you want a bite of--oh, that's right, you don't eat."

"Do you want to try some?" Me: "No, thank you." "Oh. Of course you don't."

What the hell, man.

And the low pulse rates! Even at the damn doctor's office, pulse of 46, they ask if I'm a runner. I say yeah, mumble something about ballet, genetics. Bull CRAP, and I weighed in on their scale as 112.5, I'm 5'7". Can't you SEE I'm underweight?! You're a medical professional!

UGH I can't WAIT to be normal again.
