| Weight Gain | Shakes/Bars the good, the bad, the just plain gross | Nov 02 2009 02:25 (UTC) |

Just wanted to add BearNaked bars to the list of ones you might try. They are shaped a little differently than the usual-- square and more thin and very tasty--might be sugary, I don't know. The grocery store cashier noticed the bars and asked if they were like the fruit leathers/fruit strips. They are not as thin as those and they are nuts and fruit--like a regular bar. I like Bear Naked cherry and vanilla granola, too. Rchklove--thanks for all the CIB recipes. I like CIB, chocolate. I buy it in a canister. 1/3 cup mixed with milk. SSkirt |

It is nice to see that we enjoy Liberte yogurt. I remember the plum-walnut flavor as being especially good. I enjoyed three flavors--I think that is all they had in the Mediterranee flavor at the Whole Foods I visited. Megfallon: thanks for the link. Unfortunately, the only chain store on that list that is in my part of the US is Whole Foods. The distributors seem to be focused on the East and Northeast. I don't know of a co-op here. We might have an IGA, but not in my side of this city. So I guess it is Whole Foods or nothing for now. It is only about 8-9 miles from home. SSkirt. |

Tessa: thanks for your thoughts and kindness. I appreciate that. sw33ttooth: Welcome. I think I was about your height and weight at age 23 (female). I always wanted to gain and couldn't gain well until I was clued in to eat 6 times a day, keep a journal of calorie intake and get enough calories every day. I'm 50+ years-old now and it took 2500-2700 cals/day for my latest gain. Good luck to you! SSkirt |

Crazy247: Congratulations! Way to go! We are the same height and same goal. I reached 120 lbs, just barely, at about the same time as you. I'm trying for a BMI of 20 now. What did you do to celebrate? I'm in the middle of sadness about a very ill family member, but some day I plan to take myself to a high-calorie restaurant here for dinner and dessert (The Cheesecake Factory). It is also high-noise and I'm not up to noisy places right now. ~SS~ |

female, over 50, always trying to gain (no ED) 5'6" Starting WT: 106, early May 2009 CW: 120 at 5 PM (same as last week, 'except wearing a bit more clothing today) But only 117 on different scale at 10 AM Wednesday with little in stomach. GW: 120 (reached, at least in afternoon weigh-ins) New goal: BMI of 20 (124-125 lbs.) It won't happen for a while, 'cause of current stress about ill mother. It made her feel good that I've gained, though. SSkirt |

female, over 50, always trying to gain (no ED) 5'6" Starting wt: 106, early May 2009 CW: 119.5 at 3 PM and at 5 PM after snack, I finally saw 120. I feel like it is a fluke, though, and that I don't deserve it, because I haven't been counting intake or consistent for a month, at least. Maybe the work scale is sick, but it is the one I use every time. GW: 120! and then try for BMI of 20 (124-125 lbs.) My mood was so down today because of life things, until I saw the 120. Cheesecake Factory, here I come when in a good mood. (That is one of the rewards I planned when I hit the big 120). SSkirt |

A few words from non-ED person: I agree with everything above. I eat in moderation--weakness is chips or similar things and I have some nearly every day; I also have many of the things that people list in the "What I ate today" thread and I've been inspired enough to buy many of the healthy things and most are delicious! It really bugs me when I'm eating with other women who are think they need to lose weight and they start verbalizing guilt about having this dish or that food. I want to say "Please, just enjoy lunch. If you want it, order it and maybe you can exercise later, or not." Moderation as everyone said. Enjoy that snack bag or two from the vending machine when you feel like it and have a yogurt or something later. SSkirt |

I've had the same question. I could really use something that would give me a good appetite in the morning when I wake up. I would rather have juice and nothing else until about 10 AM. When my beloved cat was on chemotherapy, his wonderful vet prescribed small portions of cyproheptadine tablets (brand name= Periactin). They are an antihistamine with side effect of appetite stimulation. I think they worked somewhat for him. Has anyone here taken it? SSkirt |

female, over 50, always trying to gain (no ED) 5'6" Starting wt: 106, early May 2009 CW: 118 GW: 120-125 Struggling, still haven't seen 120. I fell off my routine 'cause of craziness and sadness in work and personal life affecting me deeply. Will try to go to store and get my act together this coming week. Coco621: You can do it. I eat and live alone, too and cooking is a drag if you don't feel like eating or have little time or even little food in the house, because you are the one that has to do all the shopping. That's why I like nuts and bars and dried fruits and hi-cal beverages and hi-cal yogurts. Big yield in calories and taste with little work. |

female, older than any woman on here, Height: 5'6" Starting W: 106 early May 2009 CW: 119.75 (up 1.5 lbs from a week ago) GW: 120-125 Getting close to celebrating reaching 120! I think I still look thin in the mirror with work clothes on, but BMI is in normal range (19.3). I'm really small-boned. That's why my goal has a range--it depends on how I look and my measurements at 120-125. Today, I think 125 will look better, although I'll take this weight compared to when I started! 124 would be a BMI of 20, I think (the recommended goal on this board, usually). Hey Coco621: As you've noticed, we have similar height and goals. How is it going since the 3 Ensures/day? Looks like your goal of 115 by Sept 1 means a gain of 1 pound per week and that you are on your way. |

Coco and lula, Maybe we could all have a "I made it to 120" celebration when we reach that goal. At 118, I can notice the difference in my body now: less ribby, arms a little fatter (I'm naturally always thinner on top than from waist down, so I'm happy to see a little difference in those areas and I hope it isn't all due to monthly water weight.) Snack time and keep gaining, everyone! SS |

Yes, you noticed and now I will notice for sure. I never want to get that low again. I used to think I could tell if I was losing just by looking at my body. Guess I was wrong. Planes-yes! How does anyone like us get all our calories in when flying long distances and car rides, too? Looks like I will be going back in a few months and this time I'm packing bars and nuts and dried fruit and I don't know what else to last me on the layovers and flights and cabs and trains and...Good observation about the dehydration, too! Air travel sucks a person dry, I think. The parking lot that I use near our airport gives everyone a free bottle of water when they return home. I wonder why. Take it easy and I think your three will be back very soon! |

Zebulancherry, Sorry to hear about your three-pound loss. There must be something about going on vacation. The reason I am on weight gain effort now is because I came back from three weeks of work/vacation in Europe in March and people were telling me I looked thin (so what else is new?). However, when I weighed my- self, I was shocked to find that I was 11 pounds lower than normal and at a weight that I had not seen in 25 years and below normal BMI. I went to my Dr. and I'm up to normal BMI, maybe. The last two weeks I probably lost some because of stress. I think maybe vacations are a stress, even when very happy, because they are a change. I wasn't eating like normal routine in Europe and running around and walking more--all of that could have caused my big loss. Vacations are a change in our routine and I think for people that tend to lose weight easily, the change = lost pounds. Enough about me. I think your 3 pounds will be back very soon. Good luck! |

Good news--no nausea this morning. However, spent large part of day sleeping. I think my body needs it, although I'm not getting enough calories in because of sleeping so much. These tips are great. Swim fan: I think I'm not getting enough water and maybe accumulation of stomach acid from lack of food might be a reason, too. I ate well yesterday and last night before bed and no nausea. Before falling asleep, I did a relaxation breathing exercise that I found on Dr. Weill's website. Posseof1: Love the lemon-ginger tea idea. I will look for it. I like Stash teas anyway. The idea of tea and writing is comforting just to read about. Red lentil soup is simmering on the stove now--a comfort food for me. I've been e-mailing friends today and that helps, too. lynnmm: Yes, the situation is not something I can control. It is part of life and I have to accept it, as you said. It is getting easier day by day and I'm looking for the positive aspects. Thanks everyone. Soup's on. -- SSkirt

Oh, these posts have resurrected a pet topic of mine: being underweight in an overweight world. No one gets it in this country (US). I felt at home in France--seemed to be plenty of naturally thin women. Coco621: I don't have any suggestions, exactly, but I can imagine how you feel. Having lunch with a group of women is similar; everyone looks at the menu and goes on a guilt trip about "I shouldn't have this, but..". I just want to enjoy the company. sometimes the other women look at my plate or what I'm ordering and as you said, it is about their insecurities. I just want to have a nice lunch and conversation about something other than weight, choesterol, and calories. For a while, I quit joining the lunches of women that I knew would want to bring up weight discussions. |

Height: 5'6" starting weight: 106 current weight: 117.75 goal: 120 or 37" hips and ribs filled in a little more. maybe BMI of 20 (current=19). I've been STUCK at 117 or 117.75 for the past three weeks. I think I have got to be more consistent because some days it is 2700, some days 3100, maybe 2100 on weekend. My body likes this weight; it was 117 for maybe a year before I dropped to 106 (not from an ED, just life affecting a naturally thin, high metab person). |

About the calorically dense foods--yes! Learned about those here and I must have a small stomach or low morning appetite or something, because I could never hold some of the big breakfasts posted here. So, I've become every squirrel's best friend by hauling around nuts, dried fruits, & trail mix. Rebelchick mentioned Carnation Instant Breakfast (CIB). Chocolate flavor is great. Some stores sell it in a 17.7 ounce tub, too, as well as the packets. I have most of the other things mentioned above on hand at work and home. It is the way to go for me. I also discovered that chocolate milk (whole, not 2% or lowfat) has 440 calories per pint! Avocados are another friend. I love yogurt, too. So, I hope you find at least some of these dense foods on your favorites list. It will make getting up to 3,000 much easier. |
