Weight Loss Getting desperate.. Sep 13 2009

I wouldn't recommend a strict diet.  Last week I tried a strict diet that had a lot of food, but it pretty much eliminated any oils/fats/dressings - flavor, if you will.  It was a lot of veggies and chicken, and it was a lot of food.  A lot.  Sometimes it was difficult to get eat everything, I felt so full all the time.

I lasted three days before I said screw it, and had to have pizza.  And I've been eating normally for the last three days, and there were no rapid weight gains, and in fact, no change at all.

There are a couple things I would recommend, which I took away from this diet.  First, plan your meals.  And I don't mean down to the last calorie, but write out a plan for the week and for each meal, give yourself several options, that way you won't be limiting yourself.  Second, write it down.  I have a hard time with this one, but if you make an effort to write it down, you might not always eat what ever is in your hand.  And most important, at least for me, is eat several meals.  Breakfast, snack, lunch, snack, dinner, snack.

I bought groceries for the week and made sure I had enough fruit, veggies, and salad cut and portioned.  I cooked up couple pounds of chicken breast, rice, and beans, and also portioned them.  I know for me, the more convenient it is, the easier it is.

I know how you feel, desperate, and willing to go to extreme measures, but thats often the most opportunity for going overboard.  And if you want that cookie, have one or two or three, just not the whole box.

Good luck.

Your situation sounds just like mine! I'm 5'10" and at 212 right now.  I've always been trying to lose weight it seems.  I started really focusing on losing the pounds about 7 weeks ago, because I'm getting married at the end of October.  The thought of pictures really freaks me out because I don't want to look back at the photos and be ashamed of myself.

So I know how much it sucks.  My fiance is unemployed and I work from home, and because of the crappy economy, my work has slowed substantially, so we have A LOT of free time together, in which we could be working out, hiking, but usually end up on the couch.

I work out about every day, even if its just to get on the treadmill or ellipitcal trainer for 30 minutes.  And I've lost 8lbs in 7 weeks.  While some would say that's about right, its horribly frustrating and upsetting.  I can't seem to get any lower, no matter what I do.

Two years ago I graduated college (after taking 10 years) and was finally in a position to join a gym and I did, and lost about 25 pounds in about 4 months.  I got down to about 200-205.  THEN...I met my fiance.  And it all went down hill.  You know, going out to eat all the time, not going to the gym so I could go see him. Bleh.  It all came back.

So, here we are.  Counting calories for the first time.  I had a mini freakout last night.  For some reason, it all hit me.  I hate having this extra weight.  I know my fiance doesn't love me for who I could be, but who I am, but its still really hard.   And some days I feel like giving up, and that nothing is going to make a difference. But everything I've been doing has made a difference.  Its changed the way I eat, and I have lost some weight.  Not as much as I'd like, but I've lost nonetheless.

Don't give up.  Keep working out, make sure you're doing weight training as well.  I suggest actually detailing a plan of what you want to do when you workout.  And keep watching what you eat/drink.  I never really paid attention to calories before, and once I started, it really makes you take notice of what you're putting in your mouth.

Set mini goals for yourself instead of just one long term goal.  (I'm in the same boat as you, I want to get to about 160) And when you want to start snacking, first drink a glass of water.  It'll fill you up a bit.  And if you still want that cookie, thats okay, have 1 or 2, just not the box.  I also keep pictures of things that I want, like clothes, or a picture of someone I'd like to resemble once I'm down to ny goal weight.  It keeps me going.  And from finishing off the last 4 cupcakes.

Good luck and don't give up.  It'll happen, just not overnight.

Weight Loss Got called "fat"... feeling insecure Jun 21 2009

Just wanted to say that by no means do you look "fat."  Its really hard to get past things that others say, but, just remember that most people do and say things out of fear - out of fear of the unknown and their own insecurities.

I say keep working out, but don't overdo it, and don't beat yourself up over not getting back to your lowest weight.  You look like you are already in great shape, so just keep working out to give yourself that peace of mind, knowing you're taking control, and keeping yourself healthy.

Good luck and stay healthy.  Don't lets someone else's issues/jealousy bring you down.

Weight Loss I didn't realize how many calories I've been eating... Jun 18 2009

I just started using this site about a week ago, and yeah, taking a good hard look at what you eat everyday really makes a difference.  I've lost 3 pounds so far, and I really think its because having to log in everything you eat, it makes you stop and think about what you're eating.

My advice, really look at what you're eating.  What nutritional value does it have, if any?  I have no problem sitting down and stuffing my face with cookies, but then I have to think, what does this do for me?  Yeah, it satisfies my sweet tooth, but then I'm usually hungry again later.

Just keep going and log everything you eat.  Review each day and try to figure out what could be changed, what could be cut, and what you could add.

Good luck.

Weight Loss The somewhat minor annoyances of being overweight -- what are yours? Jun 15 2009

Just feeling like I can't do enough, or am not doing something right.

I hate the word "diet."  To me, that sounds so restrictive and negative.  I won't ever say I'm going to diet, because for me, a diet won't work.  I like the idea of changing my outlook and attitude about how much and what I eat, just eating healthier.  I've never had an easier time than using this website to track what I eat.  I don't think i overdo it, but some days, I just think what's the purpose, I'll never be skinny.

I'm getting married in October, and the last thing I want is to have wedding pictures reminding me of the extra weight for the rest of my life. (My mantra - I WILL NOT BE A FAT BRIDE!)

Its hard to set goals, because for me, I don't really know who to look to as a role model - I'm 5- 10", 220lbs, and luckily because of my genetics, its distributed pretty evenly.  But I wish there was healthy image to aspire to, but I really don't know what or who that would be.  I don't want a role model that's my height but looks like a skeleton.

Fitness Is it bad to go to the gym every day? Jun 15 2009

I go to the gym just about every day.  I strength train MWF, but I try to walk/jog 45-60 minutes everyday.  If I'm tired or worn out, I lower the time, but for me, going every day keeps me motivated, and part of my daily routine, and that really is the key for me.

Like some of the others have said, you need to pay attention to your body so you don't overdo it, because there is a fine line between pushing yourself to keep going, and pushing yourself too far.
